Yasuke is the latest anime series out of Netflix and was animated by the studio MAPPA and created by LeSean Thomas, who you know from The Boondocks, The Legend of Korra, Black Dynamite, and maybe a few others from the past few decades. Yasuke is a pretty strong argument that war doesn't actually lead to any change at all. The sisters of INAPC are back with anime on the brain. This time, they're delving into the new Netflix animated series Yasuke created by LeSean Thomas. The story of Yasuke is based on the African warrior of the same name who served under Oda Nobunaga during the Sengoku period in Japan. While Thomas's series takes place in an alternate history, facts and fiction are woven together to bring this sci-fi fantasy to life. With original music by Flying Lotus, Yasuke is a hero for every age, and he has the soundtrack to prove it. On this episode of Lala's Land (sponsored by Heckler's Handiwork) Lala learns about Zeolist's Fuckening and more. On this episode of The Gotham Press Podcast, we skip some geek to dive right into the deep end of the tentacle kink pool. Don't worry though kids, we circle back around to it later on. After about 45 minutes of tentacle excitement we move on to talking about the new Venom: Let There Be Carnage trailer. But then we also realize that tentacles are represented in the Venom universe as well. Lala thinks Tom Hardy is a football player and breaks Thief's heart a little. Yasuke, the Legendary Black Samurai Behind Netflix’s New Anime Series Yasuke was a real-life Black samurai who served under Oda Nobunaga, one of the most important feudal lords in Japanese history and a unifier of the country. He is also the inspiration for Netflix’s new anime series Yasuke—a project from creator and director LeSean Thomas and the Japanese animation studio MAPPA, executive produced by LaKeith Stanfield, who voices Yasuke, and Flying Lotus, who produced the soundtrack. We saved this specifically for Zeolist but we talk about the League of Legend’s first animated series coming to Netflix. League of Legends: Arcane will hit the streaming service sometime later this fall. There is a trigger warning (suicide) coming up which I will warn you about while listening. The warning lasts from 1:04:31 until 1:06:27. We talk about the new red band trailer for Love Death + Robots that dropped online. We then talk about the Wednesday Meetup that took place and the enjoyment everyone seemed to have gotten from it. Don't forget, if you are local to the Bakersfield, California area, there will be a weekly in-person meet-up happening every Wednesday (for now). On this week's episode, Kate and LaNeysha review and discuss the new Netflix anime, Cannon Busters created by LeSean Thomas. They talk about what it felt like to see an anime series with predominantly People of Color characters in non-stereotypical styles. They also get into how this series feels like a love letter that pays homage to classic anime series such as Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Lupin III, and Samurai Champloo.

It's our infamous Sunday Grindhouse podcast, airing at 6pm (oh and it's powered by the Afronerd Radio STEAM engine), Listen to your not ready for primetime AFROnerdists discuss the following issues: is it too early to declare that we might be seeing an Asian-American film renaissance? Our impressions of two new streaming/cable shows-the Bruce Lee conceived Warriors (Cinrmax) and Wu Warriors (Netftlix); a white vacationer during a southern plantation tour gave a bad review because it focused too much on white participation in slavery (huh?); Netflix trailers for a Dave Chappelle comedy special and Eddie Murphy's Dolemite both hit the cyberwebs this past week; more social media don'ts-Mulan actress asserts support for Hong Kong police vs protesters and now there's a boycott against the upcoming Disney film; LeSean Thomas' (Boondocks) long awaited comic to anime translation makes it to Netflix; thoughts about the Jay-z NFL deal and how it relates to Colin Kaepernick; so how exactly is Disney going to get FOX properties back on "track?"; Illnois prison bans Black books and cancels Black History and empowerment program; should NYC get a comic con museum like SDCC? Call LIVE at 646-915-9620.

We're back with the second part of the interview with Wesley Louis, Co-Founder of The Line studio and Animation Director. His recent animation short, The Mighty Grand Piton, took a familiar story (child meets robot) and remixed it sending shock waves through social media. We had to talk about his work and he told us about the feedback he’d received including one moving reaction. We found out how he balances being a studio Co-Founder and creator for multiple big name brands like Viceland and LeSean Thomas, what unexpected motivators led him to making a career change, what advice he’d give to aspiring/emerging talent, why the story matters and what it means to him to do it #ForTheCulture. This is part two (a bonus) episode so make sure you've listened to part one before checking this out. Welcome to the second episode AND our first WB Episode! WB or BW? (Whichever floats your boat) WB episodes are casual chat episodes that take a break away from the interviews discussing topics in animation and how they relate to black culture. On this episode we discuss anime that inspired us growing up and how it impacted our artwork. We also touch upon the unfortunate circumstance of racial stereotypes and minstrel looking characters in anime and while it may not be intentionally malicious it’s not okay to have designs that are rooted in negative characterization. Can’t forget to bring up the boondocks as well, and how artists like Aaron Mcgruder and LeSean Thomas were part of the wave of Ameri-anime that paved the way for young black artist. Thanks for listening folks! Here is a Google Doc of ALL the characters, and Anime mentioned in the episode! https://bit.ly/2HPUYBHAs always follow the podcast by going to blacknanimated.podbean.com. And be sure to follow us on Instagram and Twitter @blacknanimated Until next time!
