In this podcast episode, Jennifer chats with Kel Haney all about fundraising. Kel shares what led her from being a theater director in NYC to becoming a fundraising coach, consultant, and trainer. She gives insights on transforming the often uncomfortable process of fundraising into an opportunity for building meaningful relationships, empasizing that anyone can fundraise successfully, even without a background in sales or fundraising, by passionately sharing what they love. Kel offers tools on navigating the complexities of fundraising, including handling rejection, building genuine connections, leading from abundance and finding a comfortable stretch, and embracing the power of storytelling. They discuss the importance of leading from vulnerability, curiosity, passion, and confidence. About Kel: Kel Haney is a Maine & NYC-based fundraising coach, consultant, & trainer. Before turning to fundraising full-time, she spent 20 years as a theater director and her fundraising methodology is based on how she led a rehearsal room: focusing on what makes each of us unique and engaging. She's personally made over 20,000 fundraising "asks" and trained non-profit orgs to raise over $15M (primarily in donations under $2K), which inspired her 5-Minute Fundraising Ask Training Program. Kel's work boils down to “Taking the Ick out of the Ask”: she's passionate about shifting fundraising conversations away from transactional encounters and toward relationship-building opportunities. Kel's worked with such organizations as: Berkshire Theatre Group, The Glimmerglass Festival, MCC Theatre, Signature Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Club, New York Theatre Workshop, Marin Theatre Company, BroadwayUnlocked, American Composers Forum, and RIP Medical Debt. What a joy to sit down with Kate Maguire this week. As the CEO and Artistic Director of the Berkshire Theatre Group, Kate lends incredible insight to the importance of developing new work and how to balance the artistic and financial needs of any production. Kate and Hal also share their magical first memories in the theatre. Kate Maguire is Artistic Director and CEO of Berkshire Theatre Group (BTG). In 2010, she oversaw the merger of two historic organizations: Berkshire Theatre Festival in Stockbridge, where Kate began in 1995, and The Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield, culminating in the creation of Berkshire Theatre Group. She is passionate in her belief that the arts open doorways to growth, that the experience of watching theatre, hearing music, seeing dance or visual art helps us all to understand the mystery of the human heart and ultimately transforms a community. In July 2020, Kate collaborated with Actor's Equity Association (AEA), state/local legislatures and healthcare leaders to earn Berkshire Theatre Group approval from AEA to produce the first musical in the United States (Godspell) followed by an outdoor production in December of Truman Capote’s Holiday Memories in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. On March 12, 2020, the Broadway League suspended performances for all Broadway shows through April 12 amidst rising Coronavirus concerns and bans on large gatherings. Six months later, most industries are reopening, television/film production is resuming, and many office employees are settling nicely into remote work routines. Yet staying masked, practicing social distancing, and avoiding large crowds remains crucial in the fight against COVID-19. As a result, Broadway and many theatres across the country remain closed until at least January 3, 2021. So much remains unknown for our industry, but there is hope as live performances begin sprouting up at venues such as Berkshire Theatre Group and Weathervane Theatre. As Broadway’s Diana prepares to be filmed for Netflix. As theatre artists find ways to create work digitally. But what did the future look like for actors at the beginning of the pandemic? During the month of March, we released daily conversations with actors performing in Broadway shows, national tours, and regional productions, as they first adapted to workplace changes, then unemployment and the uncertainty. Six months later, we look back at those conversations to see if anything from the past can teach us about the months ahead. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week, the Friends talk about Godspell at Berkshire Theatre Group, the first musical to be performed in from of a live audience using union actors. There's a lot of plastic involved, and masks on stage, which is admirable but they can't help but wonder: Who would want to risk their health to go see a show right now? Then, the Friends review a show that is safe, the Zoom tarot readings currently being presented from Strange Bird Immersive, a Houston-based company that specializes in escape rooms. They can't do escape rooms but their actors are doing tarot readings online which are actually quite unnerving and accurate. This week's guest is actor Harriett D. Foy, who is currently playing the ultra-religious Patrice in P-Valley on Starz, a new show written by playwright Katori Hall based on her play Pussy Valley. Foy talks about reading mean Tweets online and the upcoming virtual play she's doing to celebrate the centennial of women's suffrage: Finish the Fight by Ming Peiffer, which will premiere on Aug. 18 and is produced by The New York Times, and is about the unsung women of color who helped win women the right to vote. It will be available after the 18th for you to view whenever. Raffaela was born in Smithtown, NY and raised in the small town of Sayville, New York on Long Island. At an early age it was obvious Raffaela wanted to perform; she could sing before she could talk. Raffaela has formal education and training with the Berkshire Theatre Group and the CAP 21 acting conservatory. She graduated from the Long Island Performing Arts and Technical High School and attended Sarah Lawrence College, where she studied liberal arts and performance as the only freshman in her year to be accepted into senior and graduate-level courses. Raffaela has also trained at the studios of Susan Batson and Ivana Chubbuck, and has been involved in over 50 community and regional theatrical productions as an actress and singer. In 2011 Raffaela wrote and recorded her first EP with Grammy award-winning producers Frank and Christian Berman. The music video for her original track "So What" was accepted into the Dances With Films festival (2015), Rahway International Film Festival (2015), was a jury selection at the International Family Film Festival (2015), and won best song in a music video at the Hollywood & Vine Film Festival (2015). She also wrote and starred in the short film "Taking A Chance on Love" in 2014, which was nominated for best short film at Dances With Kidz (2015) and an audience choice award at the Hollywood & Vine Film Festival (2015). Raffaela is presently in development with InRage Entertainment and Sony/ATV producers & songwriters, Automatic and Ebony Vanderveers where she is in post production for her music video and single, HURRICANE, featuring artist Chris Redd (Popstar, Never Stop, Never Stopping) written by the Vanderveers and Elise Legrow.
