Dennis is joined via Zoom by actor Jeff Hiller to discuss his new memoir Actress of a Certain Age as well as his recent Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy for the HBO series Somebody Somewhere. Jeff talks about being completely surprised by the nomination, his plan to enjoy every moment of the Emmy experience and how happy he is to get to share it with the series' star Bridget Everett who is nominated in the writing category. He also talks about what it meant to play such a kind, nuanced character like Joel after years of often snarky smaller parts with names like Flight Attendant and Waiter. He also talks about making a vision board that was eerily similar to Joel's and he made his long before he even knew about the show. He also recalls spending a semester as an exchange student in Namibia in college and the story in his book hat made Dennis cry about receiving a very gay sign from his mother after she passed away. Other topics include: why he likes auditioning, how doing a lot of improv helps him in day-to-day life, carving up a twink on American Horror Story and loving it, that time Ryan Murphy ordered more cockrings and why you should never let a new guy you're dating come to your improv show.

WELCOME BACK TO ANOTHER EPISODE OF MAN VS MARRIAGE!Hey, Where are you in life? Truly, where do you find yourself in life at this very moment? It is by NO mistake that you are here and listening to this episode. At 47 years of age I struggled for the lion share of my adult life seeking and searching for my purpose. Even with my Christian faith in heart and hoards of people seeing in me what they believed to be my purpose I felt lost in frustration and concern about what I was supposed to be doing. Get this, It wasn't an all the time thing, I would have times of confidence believing I knew only to be thrown for another loop in this habitual cycle. "Excuse me Mr. Waiter, I will take an order of what the heck is going on with a side of doubt and uncertainty"! You'll never guess who or what the problem was....Did you say me? You are right you are the problem HA! I jest of course. YES, I was the problem. I hadn't the courage to define what it was that I wanted in life. I was afraid to admit it because I thought it had to be perfectly written and I had no permission to fail. Wrong! Truth is, you must start where you are and do not be afraid to seek God's heart with the mentorship I have received from one of my closest friends Shane, ASK-"LORD WHO AM I AND WHAT AM I TO DO"? "WHAT IS YOUR HEART FOR ME"? aka "WHO AM I AND WHAT AM I TO DO? The Answer, Be about YOUR Fathers business. Coming to terms with this amazing gift, YOU were created for something great and God will align you with that purpose IF you are willing to surrender your ambitions to His. Get your ticket today!Today I'm sharing some great insight today about my newest New York Times Bestselling book, "Make Money Easy". But first, I need to tell you about my dad and these $2 bills. You're going to think this sounds crazy, but every time he tipped with $2 bills, it was like watching magic happen. Waiters would light up like kids on Christmas morning. I've interviewed billionaires for 12 years, and the happiest ones all say the same thing—be generous. This book isn't about stock picks or investment strategies. Things get heated as they roast Governor Kathy Hochul's school cell phone ban, slam Texas' gerrymandering drama, and unravel the mind-blowing plan for a nuclear reactor on the moon. Long time waiters tell stories of what really goes down when customers treat waitstaff poorly. We endure threats and poor treatment. In this unfiltered episode of the Opie Radio podcast, Opie and Ron the Waiter dive into a whirlwind of topics with their signature humor and candor. They unpack the Sydney Sweeney American Eagle ad controversy, debating its "great jeans/genes" wordplay—misinterpreted by some as a nod to eugenics or racial insensitivity, while others see it as a clever marketing ploy to spark buzz. The conversation shifts to a serious Legionnaires' disease outbreak in Harlem, tied to the city's iconic water towers, exposing concerns about aging infrastructure and water safety. They also tackle the unintended consequences of immigration policies, including a quiet Venezuelan Music Festival due to ICE raid fears, and the chaos caused by an AI tool named Elsie fabricating healthcare research. Political frustrations surface with critiques of Kamala Harris' campaign missteps, Trump's immigration tactics, and the economic impacts of tariffs. Woven throughout are personal anecdotes, from Opie's quirky lemon potato recipe to tales of overbearing mothers and mob encounters, delivering a lively mix of pop culture, serious issues, and laugh-out-loud moments.
We start off today's show checking out Opie's livestream from the morning. He claims he's having a romantic week while the kids are away but then we hear a very different story. After a riveting list of the things Opie has grilled this summer, Ron the Waiter joins the show to prove once again how utterly talentless he really is. Adam Busch gets very uncomfortable as he sees the similarities between him and Ron the Waiter. Stavros Halkias and Chris Distefano are taking over for 2 Bears, 1 Cave for the summer and they're killing it as they lay into Tom and Bert. The Fighter and the Kid is trying new ways to find an audience but I'm not sure it's going to be successful as Brendan Schaub never has anything to add to the conversation. Stuttering John continues to get beat up by Stephanie Miller and the guest that he booked as we check out his second episode working the board for Stephanie's happy hour show. Steel Toe completely embarrasses himself at his live show, he prepared nothing for an event he's been promoting for months. Review girl Megan joins us with another round of “Is It Gay?” Annie is also on as we play another round of “2 Minutes with Tom.” We check out some recent reviews and Spotify comments and finish up with your voicemails. Interview by Kris Peters For almost four decades, rock outfit The Poor have flown the flag for good old-fashioned, no bullshit Aussie rock. Alongside their brothers in Rose Tattoo and The Screaming Jets, to name just a few, The Poor have remained loyal to their roots regardless of the changing tides of world music, delivering time and again with a carefree attitude coupled with classy as fuck rock numbers that almost dare you to not listen.Theirs is a music and style that has stood the tests of time and the swirling winds of change, and it is testament to their durability and longevity that last year's album High Price Deed is regarded in some circles as being equal to, if not superior to, The Poor's groundbreaking debut classic Who Cares. With a touring schedule reminiscent of the glory days of Australian rock and gigs booked already until at least the end of next year, it's fair to say that The Poor are running head first into the naughty forties and, even better still, show no signs of slowing down. Despite having their original bass player, Matt Whitby, step away from the band earlier this year for personal reasons, The Poor remain firmly on track, focused and ready to continue their domination of the Australian and global music scene.HEAVY sat down with drummer Gavin Hansen to find out just how much The Poor have on their plate. One of the questions we ask relates to the sustainability of bands such as The Poor and Rose Tattoo, and we question if their old-school attitude to life and music has played a part in their sustained output and success."I think so," he measured. "That's definitely a part of it, I guess. The way that you've grown up and the way that you've cut your teeth and the way you've maintained that. The industry has changed so much in a lot of ways, in a lot of different areas over that time, back and forth. Let's face it, in the 90s there were no festivals as such, really. Festivals made a massive change in the club touring circuit for a long time, especially in Australia. As you know, the good old Big Day Out, SoundWaves and Livid's got to a point where everyone would hold off until they got on one of those bills, and then they would create a tour around it. And then I think that's what hurt the scene of rock bands coming through. They weren't out there slogging it out in the circuit or the pubs every weekend, you know. They were waiting, or there was just a massive change of festivals. And then now… I don't know. I'm not going to say there's nothing to replace it in the sense of that calibre of acts. I just think that era has a different edge and hardness and toughness about it, where, you know, maybe the stuff in the last 10 years hasn't."Talk turns to Rock The Boat 2026, where The Poor sail the high seas with The Angels, Baby Animals, Rose Tattoo, Killing Heidi, The Superjesus and Radiators, just to name a few."I've always been hesitant about boat cruises," Hansen smiled. "What if you got on a boat cruise with a bunch of dickheads, how do you get away from them (laughs)? But no, look, these boats are big enough. It's not just a little tinny going around the harbour. We're really looking forward to it."In the full interview, Gavin talks more about The Poor's next two hometown shows at Mo's Desert Clubhouse (August 7) and the Koala Tavern (August 9) and how they will likely be the last chance this year the people of Brisbane and the Gold Coast get the chance to catch The Poor in their element. We discussed Matt leaving in greater detail and meet his replacement, while also looking into the fallbacks of changing band members that most of the public don't see.We talked about their upcoming shows with Rose Tattoo, Adelaide's Rock Hard Festival, supporting up-and-coming Australian bands, the increasing lack of respect in the music industry and possible causes of it, new music and future tours, plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Douglas Rushkoff has spent decades warning how each new digital technological “revolution” has promised liberation but actually only compounds social and economic injustice. Six months after describing AI to me as the "first native app for the internet," the New York City media theorist and author returns with a provocative historical parallel: AI as the next "dumb waiter." Just as Thomas Jefferson's mechanical food elevator appeared automated but relied on hidden slave labor, today's artificial intelligence presents itself as magical automation while depending on vast networks of invisible human workers in developing nations like Kenya and the Philippines. Rushkoff argues that slowing down AI development—not accelerating it—might be our most revolutionary act. And that successfully harnessing AI to our needs and desires might represent our "last chance" to rewrite society.1. AI is the "Dumb Waiter 2.0" - Like Jefferson's mechanical food elevator that appeared automated but depended on hidden slave labor, AI presents itself as magical automation while relying on invisible human workers. "So today you see AI is pitched to us as if you just put out a query and something comes back and there's been no human involved. There's tons of humans... it's not without humans, it's just that the human labor is hidden."2. The "Pedal-to-the-Metal" AI Deployment is Actually Reactionary - Tech billionaires pushing for rapid AI development aren't revolutionaries but reactionaries. "The tech bros who seem to want the most rapid deployment of this stuff... They are not the revolutionaries. They are the reactionaries. The reason they want to do this pedal to the metal, rapid deployment of AI is to prevent change."3. Jobs Were Invented and Can Be Reinvented - Employment as we know it was artificially created and can be reimagined. "Jobs were invented. Jobs were invented in the 11th and 12th century. When the charter monopoly came and said you're not allowed to be in business for yourself... jobs were invented. It means they can be reinvented or the economy can be re-invented."4. We Have a "Last Chance" Window of Opportunity - AI represents a brief moment when fundamental change is possible. "There's also the same opportunity, which is why I'm excited that same 1991/92/93 opportunity, there's a new technology that hasn't quite settled, the clay is still really wet. And the possibilities are really are wide and many."5. Slowing Down AI Development is More Revolutionary Than Speeding It Up - Rather than rushing deployment, we need time for thoughtful implementation. "What if we slow down enough to have distributed access to this technology? To look at more environmental ways of doing it... but really look at what do we want to do and have enough time to... ask deeper questions."Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. On a day www.fox4kc.com reports that if the Royals leave it will be Mayor Q's fault, we learn that Frank White has blown it again for Jackson County. If/when the Royals and Chiefs leave the sports complex, it will definitely be more of a Frank White problem than the mayor. In a recent letter to the governor, White offers to cut off the Royals completely AND lower the money the Chiefs get from a 3/8 cent sales tax. Between he two of them, it has to be over in Jackson County. I met a friend yesterday, not a conservative, and we had a chatty waiter. What happened when the waiter asked what I do for a living was an eye opening moment for the young man, if only he wanted to open his eyes. I was literally talking to two people that will save $16,800 between them in federal taxes next year and don't believe it's true. The Kansas economy is ranked third to the bottom of states in the country, the first lady is helping Trump with his Russia policy and Lambert Field in St. Louis had a waiting line out the door almost to I-70 yesterday. In sports, the Big Dumper wins the home run derby, the Royals have the easiest schedule in the league the rest of the way and Fox Sports 1 fires almost everybody. Then, our Final Final is buyer beware if you're trying to become an extra on the set of Ted Lasso filming in KC.

This is a jam packed episode starting with Stuttering John's most recent appearance. Stuttering John was performing a standup show on a Tuesday night in Naples. Thankfully for us, he went on Gulf Coast News on ABC7 to promote the gig. The female anchor was nice to him at first but by the end she couldn't wait to make him leave! Adam Busch is on with us as we discuss John name dropping Ozzy out of nowhere. Ken Tamplin performing live is more cringe than I expected. Steel Toe might be in a lot more trouble than he thought but his mommy is coming to the rescue. Adam sat down with Joey C. for a four hour long interview and in a rare occurrence, the interviewer breaks down crying. Brendan Schaub misses LA so much he's heartbroken, but he's found a new reason to live. Opie continues to abuse Ron the Waiter but for the first time Ron actually adds something to the show that's interesting. "I envisioned a hot day in Italy a large square full of restaurants people eating lunch and the waiters movements as they serve the guests. Using sounds from the soundscape as a backdrop with elements pulled out and repeated ,some Foley sounds of my own for table and restaurant atmosphere."
