He set out to prove that a for-profit business could create meaningful change through ethical business practices rooted in respect for the earth, the farmer, our co-workers and the consumer.Dean spent over a decade as an indigenous rights and environmental lawyer before bringing those skills to the coffee industry by co-founding Coffee Kids, the coffee industry's first non-profit development organization, in 1988. Yet after designing and managing the development arm of Coffee Kids for five years, Dean decided that charity wasn't enough – until businesses changed their fundamental operating principles there would be no meaningful impact on the lives of the farmers. He founded Dean's Beans Organic Coffee in 1993 with the mission of using specialty coffee as a vehicle for positive social, economic and ecological change at origin.Dean has been a Woods Hole Research Fellow, a Senior Fulbright Scholar, and a Yale Law School Visiting Fellow.Dean's book about social justice, culture and coffee, “Javatrekker: Dispatches from the World of Fair Trade Coffee” was awarded the Gold Medal as Best Travel Essay book of 2008 by the Independent Publishers Association, and has been published in English, Korean and Chinese. The mission of Dean's Beans is to use high quality specialty coffee as a vehicle for progressive change throughout the coffeelands of Asia, Africa and the Americas. This is achieved through: Innovative direct People-Centered Development programs with our Cooperative Partners Activism and Ecological Responsibility The company has been directly engaged in community development and activism for over twenty-five years now.All of the high-quality specialty coffees are certified Organic, Fair Trade, and Kosher, and are roasted fresh to order in small batches at the companies beanery in Orange, MA. The vast use of pesticides in coffee production has serious impact on the ecology of the coffee-growing world and the health of farm communities.Dean has committed his business career to only purchasing shade grown coffees that support healthy environments for coffee growers and protects critical migratory bird habitat. I've known Chris Topher since we were 17 years old. We met at a friend's fancy dress 18th birthday party. I went as Leonardo, the ninja turtle, and when I couldn't work out what his costume was, he told me he was Frank Abignail Jr from the movie Catch Me If You Can. He's been obsessed with scamming, swindling, deceiving, defrauding and grifting since his high school days, so it was no surprise to me that when it was his turn to choose an episode topic, he went straight for ' Coffee Scams'.In this episode, we each bring our own coffee 'scam' to the table to discuss if it really is a scam or just brilliant marketing. Fairtrade coffee, multi-level marketing schemes and the famous Kopi Luwak coffee are all in our crosshairs on the hardest-hitting episode in the short history of this podcast. Also in this episode: Cane toads are in Kunanurra, and Filament Coffee has a brand new (hot) coffee product ✌️

Derek's inspiration to create Café Conmigo originated from a trip he took to Argentina. It was there that he fell in love with a quaint little cafe, which featured delicious coffee served in a tranquil space and enveloped with ample arrangements of lush green plants. During his time in college, he developed a further affection for Latin American culture through the relationships he nurtured with his many Spanish-speaking friends. Although he attended school in Austin, Texas, he felt as though he was studying abroad due to the highly diverse make-up of the student body. The name of Derek's coffee shop is Spanish for “coffee with me,” and it pays homage to this significant period of his life.Derek's drive to become an entrepreneur began at an early age with his involvement in the family business. His parents' work ethic made a lasting impression on him, and they often encouraged their son to work for himself. After exploring a few early ventures, including a website that helped university students to buy, sell, and swap textbooks and furniture, he decided to do something that was more suited to his personality. Although he was interested in boutique hotels and restaurants, Derek felt that launching a café allowed him to test his hand at hospitality, albeit in a way that was in better alignment with his current level of food and beverage experience. After consulting with T.J. Fairchild, owner of Commonplace Coffee and a well-known local figure in the café startup scene, Derek built his business and opened his doors in early 2021.If you have any questions or if you'd like to chat, you can reach me at my contact info below. Today on the Naturally Inspired Podcast Kevin Annett is joining us. Kevin also known as "Eagle Strong Voice" is a renowned Canadian whistleblower and a former minister of the United Church of Canada. Kevin produced an award winning documentary film on Canadian genocide called "Unrepentant" in 2007. He is the author of 12 books. His persecution by the Canadian establishment over his persistent selfless advocacy of indigenous victims of church and state genocide is an object lesson in true nature of corruption of Canada and its churches. It's important to point out Kevin's work into this matter started in the 1990's. In 2011, Kevin along with 10 traditional elders from the "River Mohawk Nation" began inquiry into an anglican run mohawk institute and into the children that went missing at the near mush hole in Branford Ontario. These gravesites that we are now hearing about in the media have been known about for over a decade. These are just a couple of gravesites that Kevin writes about in his book "Murder By Decree". During their time living abroad, Matt and Vanessa Marietti fell in love with European café culture. Inspired by a desire to combine good food and drink with a welcoming gathering space, they launched Atelier de Fer at the end of 2017. Matt knew that roasting his own coffee was going to be central to his concept, so he began learning and perfecting his roasting technique in the year leading up to opening the doors to his café. Today, Matt, Vanessa, and the rest of their team operate a growing and thriving business in the heart of Pittsburgh’s Strip District. In a short time, it’s become a mainstay and favorite among foodies and coffee aficionados alike. In this episode, Matt and I discussed the origins of the concept, how he learned to roast coffee, and the role his formal education and corporate career played in how he runs the business today. After listening to Matt, it’s clear just how important people and communication are to his company and his success. If you have any questions or if you’d like to chat, you can reach me at my contact info below. Imagine if you will, that you are working at a non-profit in Minnesota, focusing on public policy. The phone rings, and the person on the other end says “Hello. This is the Port of Los Angeles. We have 38,000 pounds of green coffee with your name on it. How would you like to pick this up?” You know nothing about coffee or roasting or retail. What would you do? That is exactly what happened twenty years ago at the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy. In today’s Social Entrepreneur, Lee Wallace, the Queen Bean of Peace Coffee tells us the rest of the story. Peace Coffee is a for-profit social enterprise, owned by a nonprofit, the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy. Peace Coffee has a wholesale business that they have been running for about two decades. They also have four retail coffee shops within the Twin Cities, Minnesota. Social Entrepreneurship Quotes from Lee Wallace “We think hard about how to do the right thing for coffee farmers.” “Our customers named us.” “I was trying to find a career that made sense to me in terms of my passions.” “What I was trying to do was find places that sit at the nexus of mission and money.” “Pretty quickly I realized that this is a magical place for me.” “I have always been interested in how organizations work.” “We spend a lot of our time at work.” “The Twin Cities is an amazing place to learn about natural foods because we have such a vibrant and thriving co-op ecosystem.” “My dad really wanted us to understand the history of industry as it came in and out of communities and how that really impacted families in those communities.” “The original idea was that we would be an importer of all kinds of things.” “More than 50% of the world’s coffee farmers, farm coffee on very small parcels of land.” “We come this work with the sense that, what we’re doing is working on trying to elevate the livelihood of an awful lot of people who historically have been very disadvantaged when it comes to the way trade works.” “It’s livelihood, but its community development too.” “Co-ops are stepping in and playing the role of civil society in these communities.” “People in these communities have ideas and know how they’re going to make their communities better. Our job is to be a good partner on the other side of that.” “We have a price floor…We believe that below this level is unsustainable for coffee farmers.” “This company existing 10 years from now is more important than what is happening this month. This company is bigger than all of us.” “You’d be amazed at who would be willing to talk to you.” Social Entrepreneurship Resources: Peace Coffee: https://www.peacecoffee.com/ Peace Coffee on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Peace-Coffee-26583664405/ Peace Coffee on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/peace_coffee/ Peace Coffee on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Peace_Coffee Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy: http://www.iatp.org/ Book: Crazy Good Advice: 10 Lessons Learned from 150 Leading Social Entrepreneurs: https://tonyloyd.com/book

A family farm at the brink of failure – Alejandro Garcia’s Costa Rican coffee farm was at substantial risk of failure. So, he left the five-generation family farm to go work in the US where he saved $40,000 working in a family-style buffet restaurant. A meeting with destiny – Alejandro (Alé) came back home, invested his hard-earned money in coffee processing equipment, and changed the trajectory of the coffee farming business. The key was a chance meeting with Ken Lander, an American who had retired to Costa Rica and bought a coffee farm. Ken’s retirement was shaken by the financial crisis of 2008. His gentleman’s coffee farm was now needed to feed his family. He learned that making a living as a coffee farmer doesn’t add up. The test model – Over the next 2 years, they forged ahead with Alé’s equipment and coffee knowledge, and Ken’s business acumen. They vertically integrated the supply chain by processing, roasting, packaging and then selling their own coffee. The trouble with “fair” – Ken and Alé shared their story, over many cups of local coffee, to people who were amazed to learn of the economic plight of the vast majority of coffee farmers. Despite a host of “fair” programs and “green” certifications the basic lot for the farmer remained unchanged. Demand for their high quality coffee quickly outstripped supply, so they partnered with other local farmers, offering to do all of the processing needed to sell the coffee. They split the revenue from the“vertically-integrated-supply-chain coffee”. They generated returns back to the farmers that exceeded “fair trade” by up to 10x. www.thrivefarmers.com
How does fair trade works to promote a higher quality coffee? Find out on this week’s episode of The Farm Report as Erin Fairbanks is joined by Todd Caspersen, Director of Purchasing for Equal Exchange. Hear about the initiatives Equal Exchange has started to develop common language so that producers, retailers and consumers are all on the same page. Language barriers, personal relationships and honesty are all integral to ensuring that fair trade standards are maintained and upheld, and Todd gives listeners inside perspective into the process of managing all of the systems that get coffee from crop to cup, ethically and responsibly. This program was sponsored by Cain Vineyard & Winery. “You can have fair trade coffee that is commercial grade, and fair trade coffee that is super high quality. It can be both things, and it’s not a prerequisite one way or another. It’s about the individuals in the supply chain.” [07:00] “What I’d like to see is greater levels of research and investigation to increase productivity on rural Latin American farms.” [32:00] –Todd Caspersen, Director of Purchasing for Equal Exchange on The Farm Report
