How do you create flow in your painting—and why does it sometimes feel stuck or overworked? In this episode, we explore how to create flow in watercolor by simplifying shapes, grouping values, and learning to see your subject differently. Instead of trying to paint every detail, you'll discover how connecting shapes and recognizing patterns can bring more movement, clarity, and ease into your work. We talk about: • How to create flow in your painting • Why paintings become overworked • Seeing shapes instead of details • Connecting the dots within your composition • Letting go of control and trusting the process We also touch on the Women in Watercolor community and their current competition, along with how to approach a prospectus in a simple, manageable way—so it feels less overwhelming and more like an opportunity to grow. I also share my guided journal, Find Your Creative Flow—a quiet, supportive space designed to help you slow down, reflect, and reconnect with your creativity without pressure or perfection. Whether you're feeling stuck, overworking your paintings, or looking for a more natural way to paint, this episode is an invitation to step back, simplify, and let your painting breathe.

"We are a group of analysts working in the greater context of the analytic world, but as a group, we have a profound analytic group process that's evolved and in profoundly successful ways - we've become a group that contains one another, and deals with great difficulties. Mel has given a taste of where we go to an emotional authenticity that's very compelling… Somehow, we've gotten to a place where nobody seems to be hungry in the group. You're not hungry for affirmation or support, so that there isn't a sense that people are waiting to say something smart or do something smart or make a brilliant interpretation, and there's enough resources left over that the tendency is so powerful to look to enhance somebody else's sense of aliveness and creativity." J.P.   I feel very lucky in this group, because I received a gem of a gift that was unexpected. We were going along as a group in this wonderful way. I would look forward to speaking with everybody every four weeks. We got a lot of work done. We also became part of each other's lives in our own way. However, there was always reality around us that we had to cope with. And suddenly, last year, I had a catastrophic medical event in which I had routine surgery that went extremely well, and when I went to leave the hospital, I had a cardiac arrest, and then basically six weeks of ICU care, and lived because I was in a hospital. But it is this group that then took on even more of a meaning for me, because I felt the presence of everyone near me in this group always, and it did give me the sense that the group had also morphed into its own living, breathing entity that really kind of enveloped me at a very painful time. I realized we could go back and forth as a group, actually quite easily, between clinical work, psychoanalytic thinking, and the harsh realities of time, illness, whatever that would intrude or were surrounding us as a group. To me, this was kind of a miracle of a gift. It's been life-saving, really life-saving." P.W.   "Developing a sense of one another in how not only we talk, but who we are. That friends are people I feel I can be fully open with and not have to worry about it, to feel free and even when I say things that I might question or regret or feel self- conscious or embarrassed about with friends -  it's held, and I feel this has happened in this group, that there is a way in which we very tenderly hold one another, and there's something about that space, perhaps it's an analytic space. I feel we do it with our patients, but I feel with our peers. It's a very precious thing indeed." M.M.   Episode Description: This episode of the podcast takes a step back from our usual focus on how an analytic mindset can improve the lives of those in our care - either on or off the couch. Today, we consider how we can and do care for ourselves and each other. We are a group of six analysts who have been meeting regularly for 10 years. We evolved from a thirty-year group originally devoted to the study of analytic writing. We now meet to share our lives and our work in what Peggy Warren calls "a living and breathing entity."  We discuss "what we need as analysts to go on with this work", how time and illness has changed us as a group, how we feel we can share ourselves without inhibiting self-consciousness, and how what Mel Bornstein calls a 'love of life' can serve as an organizing spirit for what we do. We take up how the group is embedded into a creative process, individually and together. Jon Palmer closes our meeting by noting "there's a lot of love in this room - a necessary condition for us all to grow."   Our Guests: Stephen Bernstein, Jonathan Palmer, and Peggy Warren are on the faculty of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. Melvin Bornstein is on the faculty of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute. Mark Moore is on the faculty of the Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia, where Harvey Schwartz is also on the faculty, and of the Psychoanalytic Association of New York. In this episode, Stacie talks with Ben Taylor Paladino about how he built a festive, product based art brand from his Dallas watercolor studio into a thriving multi stream business. Known for his greeting cards, frosted cups, tea towels, custom ornaments, and a mahjong tile collaboration that put him on the map, Taylor shares how taking a year off from Stanford during COVID led him to sell at a local farmers market. That experience taught him the most important skill of all, how to confidently sell his art even as an introvert. Stacie and Taylor also dive into his wholesale growth, his powerful Christmas market strategy, and the operational decisions that allow him to offer thousands of designs without being buried in inventory. Today on Art + Audience: From Side Hustle to Seven Figures: How Taylor turned watercolor paintings into a multi seven figure product based business starting at a Dallas farmers market during COVID. The Power of In Person Selling: Why committing to a full year of markets helped him refine his designs, learn to sell as an introvert, and build a loyal customer base. The Mahjong Moment: How his collaboration with Oh My Mahjong expanded his reach and positioned his brand in a fast growing niche. Wholesale vs Retail Reality: Taylor breaks down his revenue streams and why Christmas markets like the Nutcracker Market drive major profit in just a few days. Scaling Smart with 6500 SKUs: How printing paper goods in house and using a print to order model keeps inventory lean while offering thousands of designs.   Connect with Taylor Paladino: Website: taylorpaladino.com Instagram: @taylor.paladino   Connect with Stacie Bloomfield: Subscribe, Rate, and Review: Art + Audience Podcast Website: staciebloomfield.com | leverageyourart.com Instagram: @gingiber | @leverageyourart  Facebook: @LeverageYourArt Pinterest: pinterest.com/leverageyourart Got questions? This week, we welcome the brilliant Dylan Meconis, creator of Queen of the Sea and Bite Me. Here's what we cover: How most colorists actually break in (hint: it's not by “murdering another colorist in single combat” — though that was discussed) What “flatting” is — and why it's often your first step into paid coloring work Why networking is really just “being friends with cartoonists” Portfolio strategy: Why saying “I do everything” is less effective than saying “I do this brilliantly” Analog coloring techniques — watercolor paper, oil-based pencils, and why certain materials go extinct at the worst possible moment The realities of scanning physical art (and why scanners are basically cameras on an arm) How to handle black plates, rich black, and avoiding fuzzy type in print If you've ever wondered whether coloring could be an income stream for you — or how to level up your current process — this episode is a masterclass. Products and Programs mentioned on the show Note: Some of the links are affiliate links WildCraft Studio is in Portland, Oregon.  PITT monochrome oil pencils by Faber-Castell Watercolor paints, Daniel Smith brand Watercolor paper (cold press) by Arches White watercolor paper, Dick Blick house brand Epson scanner, Perfection series Epson scanner, Workforce series Colored pencils, Caran d'Ache Summary In this engaging conversation, the hosts welcome cartoonist Dylan Meconis to explore various topics including coloring techniques, the integration of digital and traditional media, and the importance of choosing the right materials for comic creation. Margo is joined by watercolor landscape artist and muralist Juliene Sinclair, a creative whose passion for color runs as deep as the mountains she paints in. Juliene is dedicated to helping painters finally understand color—why it behaves the way it does, how to mix it with intention, and how mastering it can completely transform artistic confidence. She believes that once you grasp how color truly works, your entire creative world opens up. Juliene lives in the mountains with her husband, son, and two cats, and when she's not painting, she's likely geeking out about color theory or hiking steep trails with bear spray in hand. Together, they explore the emotional and technical layers of color, the courage it takes to follow your creative curiosity, and why making art—imperfect, vibrant, deeply human art—is essential to feeling whole. Margo & Juliene Discuss: Juliene's winding path to watercolor and murals, and how she found her creative voice Why color feels intimidating for so many artists—and how to move from confusion to confidence The power of intentional mixing and creating palettes that feel authentic to you How limiting your palette can actually expand creativity and harmony The emotional side of color—self-doubt, breakthroughs, and trusting the process Creativity as essential human expression, not just a career path Painting with her young son, and what kids teach us about fearless creativity Submit Your Questions for Margo Tantau & Emily McDowell Connect with Juliene: Website: www.julienesinclair.com Instagram: @juliene.sinclair YouTube: @julienesinclair Connect with Margo: Website: www.windowsillchats.com Instagram: @windowsillchats www.patreon.com/inthewindowsill https://www.yourtantaustudio.com/thefoundry

Today, we're thrilled to speak with Wookiye Win. Wookiye Win, Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, is an artist and educator. She teaches the Dakota language for the Dakota Language Nest Preschool program at the Institute of Child Development on the University of Minnesota campus. She's also the illustrator of Dakota language children's books. Wookiye comes from an artistic family and has always been creating art. But she never thought of herself as an artist. But when the COVID pandemic hit, she started looking for something to do at home and turned to watercolors.  Not only did she find a theme for her art in nature but also found the pigments for her watercolors. The idea of making her own paints started when she collected pipestone dust left from her father's pipestone making. Since then, she has expanded her homemade palette to include marigold, red ochre, yellow ochre, nettle, among others. It's her passion to revitalize the Dakota language. She makes an effort to speak it at home and work and to always learn more. Together with her husband, also a language revitalizer, Wookiye Win shares five kids and a home in St. Paul.-----Hosts / Producers: Leah Lemm, Cole Premo Editor: Britt Aamodt Editorial support: Emily Krumberger Mixing & mastering: Chris Harwood

I'm curious, have you been thinking about niching down or focusing in on one product type? But maybe you're nervous about making that transition or having all your eggs in one basket?  This is exactly what Kate Talcott did and she reaped the benefits and then some.  Kate is our guest this week, and I'm excited to share her story. Kate is one of our Paper Camp alumni and her business is called Splatter & Bloom. She sells watercolor kits that give you instant creativity boosts without any of the hassle.  Before joining Paper Camp, Kate was in zero stores and now her products are carried in nearly 70. She didn't always focus on selling watercolor kits, though. During this episode, you'll hear Kate share about the challenges she faced evolving her product line, the pivotal moments that led to her distribution of her watercoloring kits into 60-plus stores, and her experience of going viral on TikTok.  You'll also hear her talk about burnout and her experiences with that, which is super important for us to talk about. I know you're going to love this one.  Before we jump in, I wanted to tell you about a free workshop that I'm hosting on August 12th at 9:00am Pacific Time.  Wholesale buying season has been really eye-opening. As someone who has been in the wholesale game for over 17 years and I've worked with over 35,000 thriving wholesale brands, I have a really unique viewpoint to spot mistakes, missed opportunities, and more importantly, I can troubleshoot and find solutions for those that are facing a sales slump. The market is changing and our strategies need to shift with it. In this free workshop, I'm going to talk about how you can land consistent wholesale orders without over-relying on Faire without using bad wholesale pitches or discounting.
