Cassandra Khaw and Richard Kadrey are both powerhouse bestselling authors in their own rights. Now, they've merged their considerable talents in cosmic horror and urban fantasy to create the new novel, THE DEAD TAKE THE A TRAIN. In a New York City absolutely filthy with magic—monsters and the mundane intermingle. When that cohabitation breeds horrific problems—and it always does—you need people like Julie Crews to clean up the mess. But being a coked-out, broke ass, pig-pen disaster of a magician like Julie creates as many issues as it solves. Struggling to make rent and constantly getting screwed by her clients, Julie is desperate to score some real paying work. Complicating matters is the arrival of her childhood friend Sarah, the prim and pretty opposite to Julie's deadbeat, mage-punk lifestyle. Sarah's brightness is just what she needs, and the vibes are way more than platonic. But Sarah brought her own baggage to the big city. When Julie's pompous Wall Street ex-boyfriend Tyler calls, offering big money for a highly suspicious job, she can't refuse. Getting tangled up in his lies, and the innumerable arms of a dream-eating demon, will be least of their issues, though. Because Tyler's corporate job serves some seriously eldritch monstrosities, big ugly elder god-things on a schedule to consume their workforce. And maybe the world. This, of course, is all about to become Julie's giant mess to solve—and make infinitely worse along the way. THE DEAD TAKE THE A TRAIN is a visceral, violent, wickedly fun urban fantasy available now from Tor Nightfire: Amazon »  Bookshop »  About Cassandra Khaw Cassandra Khaw is an award-winning game writer and former scriptwriter at Ubisoft Montreal. [Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. You would think that after climbing out of Hell that James "Sandman Slim" Stark would want to kick back and relax with a case of beer, but unfortunately for him the City of Angels won't let the die sleep and it's up to him and a zombie killing pornstar to save the day. For the first half of the episode Danny reviews the book by using the P&N style, and discusses why he loves the second book so much more than the first and why he thinks it's a great sequel. In the second half he is joined by Spangar and they debate why each of them had a different opinion on the sequel. But overall it is still a crazy urban fantasy and they share a lot of laughs because it's hard not to when talking about a crazy book. ~Follow all the Legionaries on Twitter~ Danny: twitter.com/legionsarchive The Tsar: twitter.com/TsarAlexander6 Allen: twitter.com/blkydpease Spangar: twitter.com/LSFspangar ~Credits~ Original Soundcloud image prodivided by Kadrey's website at: https://www.richardkadrey.com/kill-the-dead Original cover art owned by Richard Kadrey, Paula Russell Szfranski, and HarperCollins. [Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. The concept of the afterlife has strange connotations. There are basically two general trajectories: existence or absence. However, within those two divisions are countless other possibilities, and the numerous theories on those possibilities are what make the concept of the next life so interesting to humans. Hell in particular is the most common. Is it really a place of fire and brimstone ruled by a satyr with red skin? Did he really lose to Tenacious D is a rock off? Better yet, how close was Dante in his "Inferno?" There are, of course, other insane theories such as the Key's of Solomon and his horde of beasts and the works of  Johann Weyer, a Dutch physician who dabbed in the occult and described a militaristic hierarchy in a Hellion kingdom. Whatever the case, Hellion Mythology and symbolism are ingrained in human mythology. So why not use it to our advantage and write and insane action-thriller with Hellion mythology as a device? Fire, bullets, and the devil: what better way to craft an insane urban fantasy novel? Come join Danny as he talks about this crazy fantasy. ~Follow all the Legionaries on Twitter~ Danny: twitter.com/legionsarchive The Tsar: twitter.com/TsarAlexander6 Allen: twitter.com/blkydpease Spangar: twitter.com/LSFspangar ~Credits~ Original Sound Cloud image taken from Richard Kadrey's website at: https://www.richardkadrey.com/sandman-slim/ Original cover art owned by Richard Kadrey, Paula Russell Szfranski, and HarperCollins. I’m joined in this episode by Richard Kadrey, author of the long-running urban fantasy series, SANDMAN SLIM. These novels follow the paranormal misadventures of James Stark, a hard-to-kill, half-human magician who spent 11 years stuck in Hell as an arena gladiator and pet hitman for his demon masters. After carving a bloody path back to earth, Stark re-emerges in Los Angeles, hellbent on killing the circle of humans who sent him to suffer Downtown. But to live and avenge in LA requires grit, gear, and allies, plus the occasional occult odd-job to keep you in kevlar. When your companions are carnivorous spider people, fallen angels and disembodied talking heads, and your enemies are kill-happy sorcerers, undead legions and Hellion lords….well, you’re gonna need a grim sense of humor, a fistful of supernatural powers, and an eagerness to get way down and very dirty. For better—or probably worse—Stark has a triple helping of all that, which is how he earned his nickname—Sandman Slim, the monster who kills monsters. The ten previous high-octane novels in the SANDMAN SLIM series are available now, and the eleventh—BALLISTIC KISS—is also out now from Harper Voyager.

With his new novel, The Grand Dark (Harper Voyager), Richard Kadrey takes an artistic leap from his renowned Sandman Slim supernatural noir books. We sit down in a murder hotel to talk about mixing robots and genetic engineering with Weimar Germany, getting inspired by Mel Gordon's Voluptuous Panic, David Bowie's Low, and the Brothers Quay's Street of Crocodiles, the impact of the 2016 election on his writing, and how he's getting ready to end the Sandman Slim series. We also get into the gentrification of the east Village and the Bowery, the thin line between preservation and nostalgia, the moment his brain got warped by Marcel Duchamp's Nude Descending a Staircase, our shared love of What We Do In The Shadows, the time he attended a screening of Cronenberg's Crash with Kathy Acker, his LitReactor course on writing dark urban fantasy, the wonder of being edited by Ellen Datlow, the accretionary model of novel-writing, and why it's okay to build your fantastic world by just looking out the window. Mark has a conversation with Kerrie Flanagan and Chuck Harrelson who are collaborating yet again under the author name C.G. Harris, and their mutual collaboration with audiobook narrator MacLeod Andrews. They discuss the book The Nine, which is the first book in The Judas Files series, which is narrated by MacLeod, a multi-award-winning narrator. Prior to the conversation, Mark shares a few personal updates, which include: Heading to Colorado to attend Superstars Writing Seminars as a guest instructor the first week of February A forthcoming two hour keynote he has been booked into for the spring A virtual talk he'll be doing at one conference in Alberta while he is attending another conference in Colorado Mark then shares a word from this episode's sponsor, Findaway Voices... You can learn more about how you can get your work distributed to retailers and library systems around the world at starkreflections.ca/Findaway. In the interview, Mark, Kerrie, Chuck and MacLeod talk about: The origin of Kerrie and Chuck starting to write together, originally for a romantic comedy series of three books under the name C.K. Wiles Where the name C.G. Harris came from (as well as Mark's continued mispronunciation of C.G. Harris as "C.J. Harris" and his feeble excuse that that's the way Canadians pronounce it) MacLeod's background as an actor and how he got involved in recording audiobooks, which he had never thought of as a possible career path The 12 books that MacLeod had done with Brilliance audio and how that turned into a full time profession, allowing him to leave cater waitering The decision to do this collaboration with Findaway Voices, and how this project was the first one MacLeod had done in a more independent fashion The full service studio in Los Angeles that MacLeod used to record THE NINE How this series was something that Kerrie and Chuck wanted to be similar to or appeal to fans of Jim Butcher's "The Dresden Files" The decision to reach out to MacLeod to see if he would be interested in narrating THE NINE How the collaboration between writers and narrator began and progressed, and the way that Kerrie and Chuck enjoyed the playful experimentation that MacLeod did on this project and also fully trusted him How the Voices Share royalty splitting option worked for them via Findaway Voices What THE NINE is all about and the plans for the 12 books in The Judas Files series The way that comedy plays a role in a dark novel such as this one The desire to do a simultaneous release of the print, eBook and audiobook for Book 2 in the series in August 2020 The plans for the next two books in the series coming relatively quickly after that (November and December) After the conversation, Mark talks about how Chuck was a fan of MacLeod's previous audiobooks and had the idea to ask if he would be interested in working with them. MacLeod Andrews is a multiple Audie, Earphone, and SOVAS award winning audiobook narrator, as well as an award winning film actor and producer.
