The story of human ritual and cultural tradition is one of depth and deep connection to land, to place, and to processes and protocols that remain steady across generations. But it's also a story of constant mutation, assimilation, and re-expression. There is a fluidity to culture and tradition that is not always acknowledged in modern discourse. Religious scholars will tell us that all traditions are — to one degree or another — syncretic, and when we lift the lid off of traditions and look deeper, we start to see that even those that seem the most anchored and fixed are deeply porous and adaptive, that traditions have always traveled and changed shape, just as the land itself changes constantly. At a time when more and more people are looking to reconnect to ritual practice, to tradition, and to the land — and yet wanting to be respectful of cultural boundaries — it can be helpful to also understand the fluid, spontaneous, artistic and adaptive aspects of cultural tradition, to hear stories of traveling gods and cross-cultural mashups and innovations that arrive with the movement of travelers. Right at the heart of this exploration of adaptation lives the Divine Mother, who continually re-invents herself to meet the needs of the ecosystems she encounters. So the Polish Black Madonna becomes assimilated into Haitian Voodoo, the Indian mother goddess finds a way to re-express as Catholic St. Sarah, and the African sea goddess Yemoja re-arises to become the most popular vision of the Divine Mother in Brazil and possesses bodies from all socio-cultural and ethnic backgrounds regularly. In many places, syncretism — the fusion and blending of traditions — is welcomed, even if the histories that led to that syncretism are painful. And in these syncretic cauldrons, new traditions are born all the time. Once we start to view the flow of culture and tradition beyond a human-centered sociocultural lens, we see a living animate process in which gods travel and the forces of 'place' are not static, in which outsider species are assimilated into new ecologies, and in which wanderers and outcasts play a key role in the adaptive movement of traditions. These stories teach us that the world is not so neatly divided into those who belong to a place and a tradition and those who don't. And that the story of 'not feeling at home' — of feeling rootless and separate from a homeland that is far away — is actually a key part of the human story and serves as a starting point to the process of reconnection. Featuring conversations with Peia Luzzi, Scout Rainer Wiley, Tyson Yunkaporta, Skye Mandozay and Bayo Akomolafe and music by Egemen Sanli, Victor Sakshin, Beya, and more, this episode is an oceanic cross-cultural ride that asks us to leave our preconceptions of what is fixed and what is fluid behind. En Archives of Conjure. Great Goddesses like Yemoja, Oshun, Virgin Mary, Holy Sophia, Artemis, and Themis want us to understand how much we have cultivated in ourselves to be who we are and where we are, in spite of all the wild sh*t this world has thrown at us. We carry great wisdom, talent, strength and capacity, and it's not by accident or chance. We are who we are because we have grown ourselves, like a great verdant garden. But let's not get it twisted, Mercury stations Retrograde this week and our powers of information gathering and discernment need to be front and center so we don't waste our energy on somebody else's tangled plotlines or silly arguments. Self-care routines may be the only truth we can rely on, even when we feel like we don't know ourselves. Stay Sharp, Witches, we still have miles to go before we reach the Holy Mountain. But this week is a great time to look back at how far we have already come. www.meaganangus.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/meagan-angus/message

Mensimah's Round Table: Conversations with Women of Power and Grace
In this episode, I discuss the Holy Vision of the Feminine Within. If we look at the conditions women continue to live all over the world, we recognize that there had been a deliberate erosion of feminine images (example the Orisha goddesses) that showcased strength as in the daughters of the ancient mothers Yemoja, Osun and Oya who came to the earth to awaken and refine qualities of nurturance and strength (Yemoja); beauty and Love (Osun) power and passion (Oya). I discuss all forms of violence against women, including rape and how that experience impact body armoring, sexuality and intimacy in relationships. I do relate to these experiences and encourage women who have endured pain and suffering to share their unique and healing stories. It is through storytelling that we may be able to reach out and alleviate hardships some women still experience in the world. We do hold the holy vision of the feminine within, and we must relate to the regal, beautiful, gentle, passionate and wise matriarch of this earth. We must recognize the life force of a woman and believe that each one can find love, peace, joy, and growth in our life experiences. Through this recognition, , we can start sowing the seed to passing down the myth of the ancient mothers comprising love, beauty, grace, strength, power and passion. These were the gifts of Yemoja, Osun and Oya. Through them, we learn about the goddess in all women, nature and the promise to tap deep within, rise and reclaim our birthright individually and collectively. Forgiveness is about our healing process rather than letting the other person off the hook. We often believe that forgiving a person means forgetting their past behavior or excuse it; however, that is not true. Forgiving others means we are letting go of the pain that was caused. We are permitting ourselves to live our lives without the guilt or pain of old situations. I learned that I needed to forgive and set clear boundaries with people. My boundaries are a way to protect myself and to inform people their actions have consequences if they cross the line. I can remove myself from a relationship if it is unhealthy or someone violates me by not respecting my boundaries. If you struggle with forgiving someone, listen to this podcast about the process it takes to forgive, even when it comes to forgiving ourselves. Happy Thursday, Goddess! Pour rum. Pour honey. Pour sea water. Let's talk emancipation, liberation, and true freedom on this -- Emancipation Week. Can you see the magical photo ABOVE of our (yours and my) niece we have never met in Brazil? I love all of the pics of you holding and reading and doing the rituals in my new book African Goddess Initiation -- keep 'em coming, please! But my absolute favorite pic is this magical one above. Goddess Rachel in Brazil sent me this photo of her beautiful and intuitive niece as they watch my Goddess Temple live broadcasts on Hay House together. (We resume LIVE this week Sunday at 11am EST on FB & IG @abiolaTV and Wednesday at 2pm EST on @ hayhouse on IF & FB.) Goddess Rachel and her niece both have such powerful energy. I burst out crying when I saw this image all the way from Brazil. She gave me permission to share it with you. In my head I have named this photo, "teach the babies." Goddess Antranette, who is featured on page 106 of my new Hay House book, African Goddess Initiation: Sacred Rituals for Self-Love, Prosperity and Joy taps into the energy of liberation by doing womb divination. When she saw this image of this magical child on my Instagram, she commented, "Whew. Wasn't that what this is all about!" And it is true. TEACH THE BABIES. And don't ever let anyone tell you that your voice doesn't matter. I was told that sharing the way of the goddess was a dead end. If we don't heal it we pass it on. If we don't remember it, the next generation won't have it to even forget. As we heal ourselves, we heal those who came before. As we reclaim ourselves, we heal those who come after. We are local. We are global. We are cosmic. We are brand new and ancient. I look forward to the books, podcasts, classes and things we can't even imagine that baby girl will create in the future. She is Yemanja. Yemaya. Yemoja. She is Oxum. Osun. Oshun. She is the fire next time, the fire this time, mother and daughter of the Earth and ether. She is me and I am she. I am you and you are we. This week we celebrated Emancipation Day throughout the English-speaking Caribbean on August 1st. Read more about this in Goddess Sitira's Sanctuary on page 148 of African Goddess Initiation. Pour rum. Pour honey. Pour sea water. For my ancestors, not far over from Brazil, after the enslaved people were “freed” from chattel slavery in Guyana, South American, a 4 year period of “Apprenticeship“ was enacted where they were required to continue working for free. So freedom wasn't freedom. It was the illusion of freedom. Then the enslavers were paid reparations for losing their “income!” Every year on Emancipation Day, amongst other things, I owe it to my ancestors to assess where I am creating the illusion of freedom in my life rather than really living it. When I was chained to a job I didn't like, or an emotionally abusive relationship, I was not truly living free. The golden chains are the ones that look good, but still make us miserable. In part four of this series, I read "The Monkey King,Sun Wukong", "The Pandavas", "Yemoja", & "Osiris, Set, and Isis" from the book Beneath the Moon by Yoshi Yoshitani (no pronouns). Beneath the Moon is a collection of fairy tales, myths, and divine stories from around the world that Yoshi has also represented in Yoshi's tarot deck Tarot of the Divine. As I read each story I will connect them to the tarot card they represent. I love the Tarot of the Divine deck and all the culture it shows and I immediately wanted the book the moment I knew it existed. This week, the Haus of Yemoja is inviting you over for a li'l family get-together with the gurls. So lock the doors, lowers the blinds, and put on your best pair of heels sis, cause #WeThreeQueens know exactly what you need. I met Yemoja Oshun at an art market in New Orleans and I was immediately intrigued by her career path so I asked if she would share her story with me. Our conversation focuses largely on healing her own sexual abuse through BDSM and her role in helping others heal through sensual bodywork. Show notes: Thanks to Yemoja Oshun for sharing her story. Find out more about her work on her website, Patreon, Twitter, Instagram, and Youtube SESTA and FOSTA - The Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA) and Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act (FOSTA) are the U.S. Senate and House bills that as the FOSTA-SESTA package became law on April 11, 2018. They clarify the country's sex trafficking law to make it illegal to knowingly assist, facilitate, or support sex trafficking, and amend the Section 230 safe harbors of the Communications Decency Act (which make online services immune from civil liability for the actions of their users) to exclude enforcement of federal or state sex trafficking laws from its immunity. SESTA has been criticized by pro-free speech and pro-Internet groups including the Center for Democracy and Technology, Electronic Frontier Foundation, the ACLU, Engine Advocacy, the Sex Workers Outreach Project (which described SESTA as a "disguised internet censorship bill"), and the Wikimedia Foundation, who argue that the bill weakens the section 230 safe harbors, and places an unnecessary burden on internet companies and intermediaries that handle user-generated content or communications. Episode #38: Anniitra Ravenmoon, ArchPriestess: The Power Goddesses. For this week’s episode, we are proud to interview Anniitra Ravenmoon, ArchPriestess of the Fellowship Of Isis and founder of the Lyceum Of the Nubian Moon. She is devoted and ordained priestess to the Goddesses Oya, Kali, Sekhmet, Yemoja, and others. A self-professed “wild child” at one time, she was called by the Goddess in a remarkable account she shares with us. This put her on a path to ask deeper questions about why we are here and helped her to pursue a deeply soulful life purpose. Even though she is a child of the Divine, we still appreciate the wildness we see in her! We discuss Anniitra’s spiritual journey, her calling to become a priestess, and her service in the world. Her life stories are bold, courageous, and joyful. She is a glorious belly dancer, teacher, and sacred jewelry maker, too! Also, Anniitra enlightens us in a discussion about The Orishas, the pantheon of African Gods and Goddesses. She wipes away fears about Voodoo. It turns out its purpose has been misunderstood and maligned through the old slave trade and misguided rumors. You can contact Anniitra Ravenmoon on FB: https://www.facebook.com/anniitra.ravenmoon

Summary: EDIT: We’ve had a very informative and respectful email from a listener that pointed out a few errors in my retelling of the Haitian tale about Obatala, Yemoja, and Shango. I would like to note that Yemoja is not historically associated with Haitian spiritual practices, and that the selections from Teish’s book are not … Continue reading "Episode 93 – Bright Mothers"
This presentation focuses on various artistic traditions found in the Americas as a result of the African Diaspora. It will highlight two classroom art projects in which the postmodern art of installation is used to interpret the artistic and philosophical principles of several traditional religions that generate from the practices of Ifa, originally generated by the Yoruba peoples of Nigeria. These evolutions in faith, largely determined by the new experiences of an uprooted people, enjoy a vast pantheon of divinities, much like the ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman religions. Oshun is a divinity associated with communication, love, inspiration, and creativity. The orisha, Olokun, was considered the great protector of the Yoruba people as they were forced on the slave ships leaving for their new world. Olokun is a figure that can be likened to the classical Poseidon – ruler of the deep blue sea and its inhabitants, provider of wealth and prosperity, but more importantly a healer for those in physical, psychological or spiritual distress. Some deities retained the “Olokun” signifier, while others absorbed this male entity within female entities (especially Yemaya of Cuban Santeria/Lucumi tradition and Yemoja in the Brazilian Candomble tradition). Both projects demonstrate how cross-cultural connections can be effectively experienced in the classroom, while maintaining relevance to student's own lives and culture.
