This week we are coming in with a bonus episode featuring the infamous, educational, and hilarious Professor Charles Porterfield!  We chat about the history of hoodoo and conjure, with our discussion emphasizing the black origins of the practice and giving an effort to showcase the importance of the study of liberation politics and revolutionary history as an ethos foundation within this sorcerous craft. What makes Hoodoo a practice distinguishably different from African Traditional Religions? How does conjure function as a sorcerous technique aimed at liberating the oppressed? What is the difference between pure and clean? Why is Hoodoo explicitly North American, and, how did the political landscape of the United States influence the addition of Indigenous, Jewish, and other ethnic minority's praxis in a tradition that finds its roots in Africa? All this and more on today's episode of SaturnVox. But wait, there's more! Check out the Patreon exclusive episode to hear more of my conversation with the good professor, as we transition from history into praxis, leaning more into a discussion on various uses and techniques for doing both magic and divination with playing cards! One of the biggest lies we tell in church is that everyone has to believe the same thing in the same way in order to be right with God. That's part of the reason a lot of Black people look at African Traditional Religions (aka ATR) with fear and skepticism. We are so often detached from our spiritual heritage because we've been force fed a theology for generations that says anything that doesn't look like Sunday morning at 11 am in the sanctuary of your Christian church must be of the devil. Wrong! Humanity connected to The Divine long before Christianity, long before the Bible, long before Europe set out to colonize the globe. And we are committed to raising the awareness of that reality. Hey there, I'm Kristian A. Smith, the host and the heretic of Holy Smokes; Cigars and Spirituality, the pastor of The Faith Community of Atlanta and the author of Breaking All The Rules: An Ancient Framework for Modern Faith, which serves as a resource for those of you who find yourself on the journey of decolonizing and deconstructing your faith. Welcome to Postseason 6 of Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality. What does that mean? It means we are bringing you some unreleased content and some of our most popular content while the team takes a rest to gear up for season 7. Today, we're diving in to The After Party of Black Women & African Spirituality III. For those who are wondering, yes we are going to record “Black Women & African Spirituality IV next season. In this after-party episode we're taking a deeper look at how people fear ancestor veneration even though we already engage in the practice frequently. And we'll answer a question from one of our live virtual audience members about how you venerate your ancestors when you don't even know who they are. I'm joined in this episode by Pamela Merritt “The Therapist”, Tierney “AT&T” Jordan and our special guest, Pastor Tisha Dixon-Williams. Around these parts she's like royalty, so she's affectionately known as “Her Grace.” Tisha, who is the pastor of The First Baptist Church of Bridgehampton, dropped one of the most profound statements we've ever heard here at Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality when I asked her if she had any advice for people who were interested in exploring African Spirituality. We're going to jump in at the point she answers that question. You'll then hear me close out the official episode before we jump into the after party. So pull up chair and join us as we deconstruct harmful theology and build beloved community one cigar at a time.

They often say you shouldn't meet people you admire because they may disappoint you. After over a decade of following slam poet, thespian, and organizer Mayda Del Valle's career and creative works, I have to say I was not disappointed. Despite being nervous to meet this Def Poetry Jam star, Mayda has a way of disarming you with her charm and contagious laughter. We spoke about her iconic poem, "To All The Boys I've Loved Before" which can be seen here, which is one of my favorite pieces from Mayda. We discussed her upbringing in Chicago, how hip-hop influenced her life, and the role that community organizing played in making her the storyteller that she is. Guest Bio: Poet and performer Mayda Del Valle has been described by the Chicago Sun Times as having “a way with words. Sometimes they seem to flutter and roll off her lips. Other times they burst forth like a comet streaking across a nighttime sky.” Born and raised on the Southside of Chicago. She is the author of A South Side Girl's Guide to Love and Sex , The University of Hip Hop and was a winner of the 2016 Drinking Gourd Chapbook Poetry Prize from Northwestern University Press. She appeared on six episodes of the HBO series Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry, and was a contributing writer and original cast member of the Tony Award winning Def Poetry Jam on Broadway. She began her artistic career at the Nuyorican Poets Café, where she was the 2001 Grand Slam Champion, and went on to become the National Poetry Slam Champion in the same year. She was the youngest poet, and the first Latinx person to do so. She has appeared in Urban Latino, Latina Magazine, Mass Appeal, The Source, The New York Times and was named by Smithsonian Magazine as one of America's Young Innovators in the Arts and Sciences. Oprah's “O” Magazine selected her as one of 20 women for the first ever “O Power List”, a group of visionary women making a mark in business, politics, and the arts. She has performed at venues across the world, including the White House in May of 2009, by invitation of President Obama and the First Lady. She has also served as a mentor and educator in the non-profit world, teaching poetry and performance to incarcerated youth. She currently works in the tech industry at Snap Inc. facilitating talking circles and developing curriculum to support company wide DEI initiatives that scale empathy and understanding. Mayda had also been a devoted student of various healing practices and African Traditional Religions. She is a third degree Reiki Master, and completed a two year Indigenous African Spiritual Technologies program with respected Dagara elder Malidoma Some. Soon after she was led into the ancient Yoruba spiritual tradition of Ifa. She was initiated into the mysteries of the ocean deity, Olokun in 2017. Forest is an actor, singer, writer, creator, and teaching artist currently in Austin, Texas, though he has lived in Brooklyn for the past twelve years. We are so stoked to celebrate that Forest is a featured artist on the new Grammy-Nominated album Dialogues on Race by Gregg August! We love him so much, and his friendship means the world to us. We hope you enjoy this conversation with our dear friend as much as we did! It was hard to end the conversation and we plan on recording with him again soon. Listen to the whole thing to get a bonus at the very end of this episode where we review a new review of our podcast and Micah tries to take constructive criticism. LOL) Back to this episode! Forest talks with us about his upbringing in Austin, his junior high experience in the American Boys Choir in New Jersey, his high school years at a Baptist school in Austin, and his college years at Texas State University. We also get into the details of his religious upbringing and his perspective growing up as a gay black man in the south. He was raised African-American Baptist and spent his whole life going to a Baptist church in Austin, Texas. Forest is the son of a deacon and deaconess, sang in the choir, and became a student leader. People at church even used to call him “preacha man” because everyone thought he would be a preacher. Forest tells us about what it was like feeling like he couldn’t truly be himself until he went to college and stepped away from religious environments and into theatre spaces. Where is he today? Not to spoil anything, but Forest confessed to us that he no longer identifies as Christian, and walked away, in his words, “because of what I saw and experienced as a gay man, but also as a black man. And the history of that book (bible), and how it was used, not only in the U.S. but in Africa. And the power that colonizers used with that book to oppress people. And...in good faith, I just can’t get behind it, I can’t sit there and listen to those things when I know the history behind it. And we don’t know what those original words were because they’ve been translated, and re-translated. Actually, I walked away from everything, before quarantine... but I’ve been reacquainted with God in a different way, and I’m exploring Him / It / She through African Traditional Religions. Because I also want to be in contact with my ancestors, and I feel like something that’s untouched, unspoiled, feels right for me.” Forest’s story is so powerful. We talk candidly with him about leaving Christianity, and getting back to his African spiritual roots. Other topics we discuss: George Floyd, the ways LGBTQ people are treated by Christians, and the experience of living with family that are fundamental Christians, while you are exploring ancient religions and talking to your spirit guides. :)  [CONNECT WITH FOREST] Instagram Twitter Facebook Listen to TRACK SEVEN to hear his voice featured on the album Dialogues on Race.
