In this episode of the podcast, hosts Tamara and Casey delve into the second book of a sci-fi duology, The Brightness Between Us. They explore the emotional depth of the characters, unexpected plot twists, and the overarching themes of hope and despair. The discussion highlights character dynamics, moral dilemmas, and the implications of choices made by the characters, providing listeners with a comprehensive analysis of the narrative. In this conversation, Tamara and Casey delve into the themes of a recent book, exploring the emotional weight of the narrative, character development, and the contrasting elements of familial and romantic love. They express disappointment in the pacing and the overall tone of the story, which leans towards hopelessness rather than the hopeful resolution they anticipated. The discussion also touches on the scientific aspects of survival and the cyclical nature of despair within the storyline. In this conversation, Tamara and Casey delve into their critiques of a duology, discussing the representation of media, the historical context of storytelling, and their emotional engagement with the characters. Are you frustrated when authors can't justify their own logic in the worlds they've built? Jacob and Ramya discuss some of the biggest logic gaps in popular books (Harry Potter and A Song of Ice and Fire make the list). Some dialogue is too good to believe. Time travel is a beast to master and no reader is ever satisfied. And what happens when hard magic is flimsy? Here are hot takes on why internal consistency is key to a satisfying read.Plus, is a ‘Slow Burn' Book Worth Our Patience? Not always, and we tell you why.And to wrap things up, Ramya reviews The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides, a critically acclaimed Psychological Thriller with a major plot twist and many mind games. Devon Eriksen is the author of the ongoing Space Orbital trilogy, which opened up with Theft of Fire, described as a "Shoot-em-up space opera, [of] mysterious alien artifacts, freedom-minded Belters versus corporate oligarchs..." In his work, Devon explores many of the themes we tinker with on the show - particularly the ethics of space exploration. A steadfast exploration of space-colonization, Devon brings a very different perspective to the human project not often embraced by the analytic academics we often encounter, who seem to be concerned with de-growth and the scaling back of our material economy. We talk about the role of government in space exploration, the colonial perils of the past in the context of the New Frontier, and the role of fiction in shaping objective reality. Prolific Star Wars author, Alexander Freed has done so much, recently completing his Alphabet Squadron trilogy of novels. I really loved this conversation, tracing his journey from Bioware’s The Old Republic to Dark Horse Comics to Star Wars Insider Short Stories to then, of course, full-length Star Wars novels. And, whether it is his Rogue One novelization or his most recent book, Victory’s Price, an Alexander Freed Star Wars story is always one to be celebrated. If this episode does not convince you to check out the Alphabet Squadron trilogy, I really don’t know what else would. Thank you as well to Lauren and the PR team at Del Rey for helping set all of this up. Head to AlexanderFreed.com for more updates on what is coming up. "How deep was the well back then?" -- Kevin We are a sci-fi podcast and we'd be remiss in our duties if we did not, as some point, talk about the genius that is Ray Bradbury. The man that shaped the ideal of mainstream sci-fi and influenced generations to tell their own stories on Mars and beyond. Kevin and George unpack six of Bradbury's short stories and talk about the man, his influence on their own lives and where they see his work touching the work of others. Also, is Intern Tony actually calling us back...on the air?! BIBLIOGRAPHY: Ray Bradbury Short Stories: The Golden Apples of the Sun, 1953 Tomorrow's Child, 1948 All of Summer In A Day, 1954 The One Who Waits, 1949 Sound of Thunder, 1952 Dark They Were, 1949 The Martian Chronicles, 1953 We take a “fly on the wall” approach to our listeners. In this episode, we abandon our integrity, dignity, and tagline so that we can jump on The Handmaid’s Tale bandwagon…and then mention the TV show maybe once. Instead, we learn why RJ shouldn’t be allowed to talk about authors who are still alive, pitch an idea for an action/adventure spin-off, and discover the dark truth behind why the story is set in what used to be Boston.
All Things Sci-Fi with special guest David Alastair Hayden Join host Lewis Stockham and his guest sci fi/fantasy writer David Alastair Hayden. They will talk about being a writer, the creative process, how they get inspired and their favorites in literature.
"I don't care." -- Kevin Kevin and George talk about ARRIVAL starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forrest Whitaker. They compare it to the sci-fi short STORY OF YOUR LIFE by Ted Chiang on which it is based while posing some of the bigger questions the movie sets forth to themselves. Come and listen to our best Heptapod impersonations.
