Celebrating two decades of success of business education in Germany In Episode 23 of Campus 10178, the ESMT Berlin podcast, ESMT President Jörg Rocholl steps into the podcast studio to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of ESMT (#ESMT20). He speaks on the key drivers for establishing an international business school in Germany, the school's rise to success, and the path ahead for education in business management, especially in light of the digital transformation, climate change/sustainability, and war. “We strongly believe that we would not only like to have relevance for business, which is important enough, but also have relevance for society. We strongly believe that business can only operate in a society which actually gives the credit to business to operate the way business operates. This means business always has to recouple its legitimacy with society.” – Jörg Rocholl, President, ESMT Berlin Guest contact information: Jörg Rocholl President and Deutsche Bank Professor in Sustainable Finance ESMT Berlin Bio: https://faculty-research.esmt.berlin/person/joerg-rocholl/bio LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/j%C3%B6rg-rocholl-051407/ About Campus 10178 Campus 10178 is Germany's #1 podcast on the business research behind business practice. Fighting gender inequity in the business sector serves everyone, including men. Although debate about barriers to work for women, especially those from ethnically marginalized groups, are usually centered around what women can do, a growing movement is targeting men and their responsibility directly. That work is asking men to break free of the masculinity boxes to understand that male privilege in the workforce hurts everyone, including men themselves. In Episode 22 of Campus 10178, the ESMT Berlin podcast, we speak with Sandra Ondraschek-Norris, vice president for global learning at MARC, Men Advocating Real Change, a program of the international nonprofit Catalyst, Inc. MARC challenges and inspires male leaders to leverage their privilege and responsibility to be advocates for equity and accelerate the creation of inclusive workplaces. Ondraschek-Norris details the research on the barriers to male leadership in gender equity initiatives and shares stories of how it is changing (and should change) in the corporate world. “Develop your inclusive leadership skills. European banks and investors can bring capital and credit to African SMEs. According to the World Bank, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) play vital roles in economies worldwide. Some 90 percent of businesses are SMEs, and SMEs are 50 percent of the world's employers. In Africa, the number is even higher, with SMEs providing 80 percent of its jobs. Yet World Bank figures show that SMEs in Africa and the Global South are far less likely to obtain bank loans, credit, or investment than large firms – suffering from a gaping financing gap. Mélanie Keïta is the CEO and co-founder of Melanin Kapital, a pan-African impact investment banking platform with offices in Kenya, France, and Germany. “Businesses can play a major role in contributing to economic, environmental, and social progress, especially when they minimize the adverse impacts of their operations, supply chains, and other business relationships,” states the OECD. But what does it take to gain industry compliance with ambitious international legislative goals for environmental sustainability? And what will it mean if we fail? In episode #16 of Campus 10178, the ESMT Berlin podcast, we speak with Heike Hess of the International Association of Natural Textile Industry (IVN) and Alyssa Jade McDonald-Baertl, a board member of the German Federation of Sustainable Economy (BNW). We discuss the great challenges of sustainability and green economy initiatives. These include encouraging a holistic approach to sustainable industry, demanding transparency in supply chain management, creating standards for green production, enforcing business compliance, and innovating for sustainable futures. What does the business cybersecurity landscape look like today? Were you to believe Hollywood, it looks like a pimply-faced teen hacker working from a dark basement for a stylish but likeable band of thieves. The realities are far more sinister – involving sophisticated cyber espionage rings backed by nation states using surveillance capitalism, ransomware, and zero-click attacks on financial markets, critical infrastructure, and military defense systems. For companies navigating this, there are additional, significant challenges: namely, underdeveloped (but overhyped) security software, a pervasive talent shortage, and exorbitant costs. And then there are those colleagues who just can't stop clicking on – innocent-appearing but anything-but – cat pictures … In episode #15 of Campus 10178, the ESMT Berlin podcast, we speak with Marc Goodman of the Future Crimes Institute and Sandro Gaycken of the Digital Society Institute at ESMT Berlin about how businesses manage (and mismanage) the threats, traps, and realities of cybercrime. The two speak frankly about the big lies of the cybersecurity marketplace, debate cyber defense strategies, lament the state of talent recruiting, and detail the high costs of securing our digital lives. Much has been documented about the role of sexism and racism in reducing opportunities for women and people of color in the corporate world – whether in hiring, compensation, or in advancement to the C-suite and board-level positions or, in the entrepreneurial space, in access to project investments. But, as the song goes, “sisters are doin' it for themselves” to create and share opportunities in the workforce. Born in Nigeria and raised in the US, Deborah Choi has been a successful serial entrepreneur for years. With her first startup – launched while she was finishing her degree at the University of Chicago – Deborah landed on Bloomberg BusinessWeek's top “25 under 25” list. Now living in Berlin, Deborah is the managing director and co-founder of Bosque, a tech-enabled, direct-to-consumer plant startup. In episode #14 of Campus 10178, the ESMT Berlin podcast, Deborah speaks about the critical role of mentorship, networks, and investment for female founders and women of color in entrepreneurship. We hear a lot about “disruption” these days, especially as technology like AI and machine learning transforms traditional sectors like manufacturing. Can disruption be learned? In Berlin – where the fast-developing startup scene raises comparisons to Silicon Valley – ESMT has launched an entrepreneurship hub. He is a graduate of the 2020 ESMT Berlin Master's in Management program and it's where he and other students started Vali. In an online meeting earlier this year, a high-level executive at KPMG UK said employees should “stop moaning” about the pandemic and dismissed staff fears about proposed salary and pension cuts as “playing the victim.” Although he later apologized to his team for his choice of words, the leaked video of his comments prompted a public outcry and lead to his resignation from the company. How do executive coaches deal with cases of clients feeling humiliated or humiliating others? Konstantin Korotov joined ESMT Berlin in 2005, gained tenure in 2011, and serves as both a professor of organizational behavior and as the faculty lead in the ESMT Executive MBA program.
