This week, it's time to dig into one of RJ's all time favorites: MADAME XANADU by Matt Wagner & Amy Reeder! This mystical montage of mysterium and machinations brings us on a journey through time, with the Phantom Stranger standing at Madame Xanadu's opposition! For this episode I ask Jeryl Prescott to talk to me about the state of race relations in the film/tv industry. We talked about what she has experienced in Hollywood over the last 15-20 years. We talked about the roles Jordan Peele, Ava DuVernay, and Tyler Perry have played in breaking down stereotypes about what black and brown audiences want to watch. When I asked her what she hopes will come of the social unrest, with regards the industry, she says, “Hopefully we will get beyond the numbers game.” However, she does go on to say that the commitment for real change has to come from the top, “That’s where some of the most difficult conversations about bias and racism have to happen.” Jeryl Prescott is an actress best known for her role as Jacqui on The Walking Dead and a series regular as Madame Xanadu on Swamp Thing. Jeryl has also worked on many other projects including Birth of a Nation and High Flying Bird. Somewhere between the realms of self-help and religion lies the Honest World Foundation. Its creator started out as an obscure writer of disposable horror fiction who decided to change the world—one mind at a time. Now its adherents rule Hollywood while obeying their leader’s every command.  That’s almost all that anyone knows about the movement—or is it a cult?—founded by reclusive guru Astrid Mueller. But reporter Chloe Pierce is sure that there’s something deeper hiding behind Honest World’s façade. Her fiancé was a devoted follower of Mueller, right up to the moment that he blew his brains out while holding a copy of her book. Now Chloe wants answers from the woman whose words command the loyalty of millions—and she’s ready to storm the top-secret sanctuary known as the Clean Room to get them. But there’s more to Astrid Mueller than Chloe could ever imagine—and the truth that she’s about to discover is more astonishing than any of Astrid’s accomplishments, and more terrifying than any of her novels. Doorway To Nightmare #2 (1978)Its Halloween and we celebrate by checking out one of DC’s many horror anthology series, this one hosted by Madame Xanadu (because Zatanna was probably in the JLA or something). This issue revolves around some physics girl who opens up a gate to Hell using SCIENCE~! and accidentally looks at a demon with large lady hips for too long and she gets possessed. Madame Xanadu uses her tarot cards to tell her egregious boyfriend to constantly spy on her while our physics girl gets more possessed, indicated by her taste for escargo and David Hasselhoff clones. Then we get a straight-up exorcism because its the 70s and Udo Kier is probably hanging out somewhere weirdly pronouncing the word “occult” like he does in SUSPIRIA.
