How are we changed if we pray, "Our Mother, who art in Heaven," or, "We believe in one God, the Mother Almighty?" If humans are created in God's image, perhaps our understanding of and imagination for God has been too narrow. Every day in Advent, tune in to spend a few minutes with God's femininity – as we prepare for her humanity.

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 14, 2021 49:01

Universes collide as we imagine the story of the founding of Hogwarts in the form of a Shakespeare play.In this episode, we're joined by Ian Doescher, author of William Shakespeare's Star Wars as well as Shakespearean retellings other of modern tales. He tells us about how he first embarked on this project and what made Star Wars a natural fit for Shakespeare. Ian is particularly struck by how Shakespeare mines human emotion and provides insight into characters' motives and feelings with soliloquies - something we don't get during emotional but silent scenes on film, such as Luke Skywalker watching the binary sunset on Tatooine. We love Star Wars and Shakespeare here at Potterversity, but what does this have to do with Harry Potter? It comes down to an intriguing line in the FAQ section of Ian's website, which explains that he had an idea for the story of the Hogwarts founders as told by Shakespeare, which unfortunately did not receive permission to go forward from the powers that be. We talk about why this was the Potter story Ian was drawn to, which Shakespearean themes and characters are echoed in this tale, the role of the supernatural in Shakespeare's work, how the Sorting Hat would fit in, and why Shakespeare was obviously a wizard. As Katy mentions that she finds Voldemort to be relatively two-dimensional and thinks he could benefit from a soliloquy, Ian discusses why he enjoys writing villains and how exciting it was to hear Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Palpatine) read from The Jedi Doth Return. Emily brings up the genre of pastiche, which involves imitating another writer's style, and Ian explains how he both tries to shed insight on the form of Shakespearean drama and give new life to the story he is retelling. Translating contemporary language into early modern English and iambic pentameter poses its own challenges, and Ian doesn't stop there. He works to employ the various literary devices Shakespeare used and keep iconic scenes recognizable and humorous while transforming them.  Ian is continuing his retellings with William Shakespeare's Avengers and his Star Wars pastiches with I Wish I Had a Wookiee, a book of Star Wars poetry in the style of Shel Silverstein. As for William Shakespeare's History of Hogwarts, the rights remain elusive, but if permission ever came through, Ian would gladly pick up his quill. In our Owl Post segment, two listeners ask whether Darth Vader and Kylo Ren deserved their redemption and if Voldemort could have been redeemed. We get into the ethical and theological weeds of whether redemption can ever be truly deserved or must be earned.

Preamble: As mentioned in the episode itself, we recorded this episode using Nvidia's Broadcast app for the first time to try and cut down on background noise. Our first tests went fine but this episode wound up coming across as a bit choppy and digitized. Our apologies - we'll be looking to smooth things out for future episodes! Have you ever wished you (or someone else) could vanish into thin air? Ever refused to budge an inch? Ever thought the game was up? Then, whether you knew it or not, you've been influenced by Shakespeare. Today's episode goes into the myriad ways Shakespeare still has an outsized influence on our lives, especially in the realms of the English language and literature. We're accompanied for this trip by Stephen Marche's book, How Shakespeare Changed Everything, and we hope you'll join us for the journey down the rabbit hole (not a Shakespearean phrase, to be fair) into how Shakespeare's words continue to change and shape the world today. Notes: A quick check in reveals that the English language now has nearly 200,000 words commonly accepted in it, and Shakespeare appears to have used about 32,000, including the 1,700 words he's credited with introducing. Bernard Levin is the journalist whose quote about Shakespeare's phrase adequately sums up the Bard's influence on everyday speech and idioms. Also available in jpeg form in this handy little graphic. The Chinese princess Aidan mentions is basically a footnote in the history of the Northern Zhou and Sui dynasties whose story has a bit of a Shakespearean feel to it - her name is Qianjin, and she was married off to the Turkic Khaganate in the sixth century. Ancient Bickerings: As we've mentioned many times on this podcast, we are both semi-pro writers who dabble primarily in fiction. So the question this week is: how has Shakespeare influenced you as a writer? Related to this, we should give a shout out to Ian Doescher, who has done Shakespeare emulation better than anyone! We recently watched a Zoom performance of his Shakespearean adaptation of Dickens' A Christmas Carol and loved every minute of it. Most famously he turned Star Wars into Shakespearean plays, with great success.

DDD- William Shakespeare's Star Wars Series Season 2- Episode-13 Hello Everyone, thank you for joining me on this solo podcast. I am so grateful to actually share with you these wonderful books Ian Doescher wrote to help some people fall in love with Shakespeare and Star Wars even more.  I was given the chance to share my enthusiasm for his 8 part (so far) book series of him writing the Star Wars movies in Shakespearean language, (for the most part). In this podcast I share a story about how I found out about the books and what memory it sparked in me from many years ago in a galaxy far far away.  I fell in love with these books because they helped me see the deeper meaning in the movies and allowed me to read the books and hear my own voice or what I would think they would sound like. It has been such a pleasure to read them and to reread them again. I explain why certain parts in the books stick out more than others. I also use this as a shameless promotion of this Star Wars series. So thank you for letting me use this podcast as a chance to share with you the things I love about season 2 and which became unexpected for me to become a Star Wars nerd. Please Subscribe, Rate and leave a comment about the episode or about the podcast! Thank you so much for your support!

For readers craving a humorous antidote to the sound and the fury of American politics, these clever parodies offer an escapist reprieve for those pining for the previous administration. In Hope Rides Again, Andrew Shaffer provides the highly anticipated sequel to the New York Times bestselling Hope Never Dies. Obama and Biden reprise their roles as BFFs-turned-detectives as they chase Obama's stolen cell phone through the streets of Chicago — and right into a vast conspiracy. And in MacTrump, bestselling authors Ian Doescher and Jacopo della Quercia fictionalize the events of the first two years of the Trump administration — in iambic pentameter. Will MacTrump be able to hold on to his throne? Only time will tell in this tragicomic tale of ambition, greed, and royal ineptitude — based on Shakespeare's Macbeth.

In the midst of a more-scandalous-than-usual news cycle, Ian Doescher joins us to talk about his new political satire, MacTrump. MacTrump gives an over-the-top (or over the top-er) version of the first two years of the Trump Administration, all in 5 act format, all in iambic pentameter. If you're needing a more long-form laugh than 240 characters, this might be the pick for you. Ian's is an especially fortunate publishing journey. A lifetime love of Shakespeare and a recent rewatch of A New Hope sparked the idea for William Shakespeare's Star Wars, which reimagines the beloved sci-fi series through an approximation of the Bard's pen. Ian contacted the editor listed on Quirk Books' website, who published Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, with his pitch—and they were super down. And also happened to have collaborated with Lucasfilm in the past. Now, with eleven books already written and four in the works, Ian is ensuring that the spirit of Shakespeare is carried here hence forthwith (am I doing it right?). You can find MacTrump wherever books are sold. What would it be like if Shakespeare had written Mean Girls? How about Back to the Future: "Be ready for audacious episodes. Whither we go we have no need of roads." In 2013, Quirk Books began releasing a series of books by Ian Doescher that reimagined the Star Wars films as if they had been written by Shakespeare, featuring iambic pentameter and all the other literary devices we associate with the Bard. Doescher has run out of Star Wars films for now, so he’s left the “galaxy far, far away” and turned his attention to two different films. Doescher’s newest books are William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Mean Girls and William Shakespeare’s Get Thee Back to the Future. We talk to Doescher about how he chooses films to adapt, his writing process, and how his kids react when he points out naturally-occurring iambic pentameter (they aren’t impressed). Ian Doescher is interviewed by Barbara Bogaev. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast. Published July 23, 2019. © Folger Shakespeare Library. All rights reserved. This episode, “What Imitation You Can Borrow,” was produced by Richard Paul. Garland Scott is the associate producer. It was edited by Gail Kern Paster. Ben Lauer is the web producer. We had technical help from Andrew Feliciano and Andrew Bates at Voice Tracks West in Studio City, California and from Ryan Mock, Kelsey Woods and Laurilee Stapleton at Digital One Studios in Portland, Oregon.

I used to read more in the late aughts, but things got out of hand with the tropey, poorly researched, non-representative crap that was being churned out. So I’ve actively avoided the genre(s) for some time. Below is a list of things that are acceptable (YES) and a list of things that send me into rage fits (NO). YES * Yes, adults. Not YA, not New Adult (whatever these mean these days), but Adult. Like, give me some thirty or forty year olds living their best lives (or not). * Yes, chemistry then sex and not the other way around. * Yes, sex that is described and not told. * Yes, written by a WOC. * Yes, would love a black Woman as the romantic female lead. And interracial romance is a huge plus. NO * No love triangles. The trope is overdone & unimaginative. Not to mention, annoying. I don’t read romance or erotica to hate all the characters at the end. * No instant sex then trying to make a nonsensical relationship work to keep having sex. * No ridiculous miscommunications leading to silly drama to fill pages rather than a well-developed plot. * No “deeply troubled” for whatever reason man that has to be saved by a woman in any capacity. So, no women being martyrs for dudes. There is enough of that IRL. Unpopular opinion, I don’t like The Wedding Date for reasons I’m open to discussing at some other time. I love mysteries, books about books, books about food/restaurants, books set in England or France. I’d prefer there be no children involved, but it’s not a hard limit. Having done my own research, I know it will be difficult to hit all these criteria, but I have faith your collective book knowledge can find me something that won’t make me want to toss the book at the wall! I have linked my Goodreads as well. Thank you for your time, Neurotic About Erotica   2. I used to love reading trilogies and series when I was a kid and I miss the feeling of finishing a book and knowing that there’s more to discover. However, most adult trilogies and series seem to be published in genres I don’t particularly enjoy: fantasy, romance and science fiction. Can you recommend a series or trilogy for adults in another genre? I do enjoy historical fiction and read mostly literary fiction. Some crime or mystery elements are fine, but ideally shouldn’t be the focal point. FYI, I tried Old Filth and Sea of Poppies and didn’t enjoy either of them. The Gilead series is on my list already, as is the ‘A Rising Man’ series thanks to a BR recommendation. Thanks so much in advance! Cat   3. Hi ladies, I’m writing with a recommendation request for my wife. She was a voracious reader growing up, but for a variety of reasons has become a reluctant reader now in her late 20s and struggles to focus long enough to really get into a book. I’m not trying to change her, but I often hear her talking about ideas she would be interested to explore more deeply and I think, “there’s a book for that!” We recently got into comics. Her current favorite titles are Lumberjanes and Doctor Aphra. She’s a big fan of Game of Thrones, Star Wars, House of Cards, Jessica Jones, Timeless, and Dan Brown books. So I think something with some history, political intrigue, and a pinch of darkness would be up her alley. LGBT representation is a plus. Please no dragons if you make a high fantasy pick. Many thanks! Hope   4. Books similar to the Raven Cycle -Deaira   5. Hi Amanda and Jenn! I recently started your podcast because one of my friends from my book club recommended it (and wow is running on the treadmill way more joyful now!). Work has been very emotionally taxing the last year, and I have been setting more and more time aside for reading. I have found myself falling in love with books with tasty language, most recently A Gentleman in Moscow (and Rules of Civility), The Secret History, and Circe (and Song of Achilles, which I know was mentioned in your last podcast). All seem to live in times almost apart from our own. I would love a recommendation for a book that offers a similar escape with a setting that lives in its own time/space, but mostly with the lyrical detail of A Gentleman in Moscow. Thank you again for your work! -Brittany   6. Hello! (Yes, this is a second request — I can’t believe this one didn’t occur to me) I’m heading home to Malaysia for a VERY short visit in a few months (before fleeing to Europe, per my other request). It’s my first time back in five years, and may or may not involve seeing family for the first time in longer than that (there’s a complicated family situation there). I’m pretty anxious about this visit, both because of the complicated family situation and because (sigh) I have none of the things that my culture requires of a good Malay woman: I’m unmarried, there’s currently no boyfriend on the scene, there will be no babies from me, I’m not religious, and no, I’m not moving back home. Ever. I’m dreading all the questions and the (possibly imaginary) disapproval, basically. Can you recommend a book that might help prepare me for this trip, or at least help me tackle all these anxieties, both imagined and real? Thank you so much! -Rae   7. Hi! I have really gotten into WWI and WWI historical fiction, which is great but also heavy. I would love some good audio books that will make me laugh out loud. I love all kinds of humor but sarcasm and dry humor are my favorites. I’ve listened to heartburn and a gentleman’s guide to vice and virtue. I also love crazy rich Asians and Jen Hatmaker. I prefer fiction but will try nonfiction. I rent audio books from my library’s app so please no new releases. Including my goodreads link.
