In December 2022, a workshop was held to engage young Antiguans and other stakeholders around topics of data privacy, their digital footprints and just how the data left in the wake of our online activities is collected, stored, utilized, and even bought and sold. This special episode of Grassroots Radio reports on the workshop series and features voices, insights and impressions from the event attendees. This project was funded by the Internet Society Foundation and led by Dr. Rys Farthing.
Aaron Nibbs has spent most of his life moving between Antigua and the United Kingdom. He lived, worked and earned his Masters of Architecture in London, before moving back to Antigua where he now works for Andrew Goodenough, Architect in English Harbour.
Eden Bird is an up and coming cannabis connoisseur, massage therapist, and laboratory technician employed at the Department of Analytical Services in Ministry of Agriculture. There, he conducts microbiological analyses and chemical testings on various food, water, and soil samples. Eden holds a Bachelors degree in Molecular Biology from the Midwestern State University. Having a scientific background allows him to experiment and manipulate the active compounds in the cannabis plant into other consumable forms. He aspires to work at a Medical Marijuana Testing Facility where the medicinal components of the plant can be isolated and further analyzed for research. With mixed social reactions to cannabis use and the recent decriminalization, Eden hopes to enlighten the general public on the many uses and benefits of the medicinal herb. Hempress Divine is an artist in all forms, born and raised in the island of Wadadli (Antigua). Her head and heart mission is to take all the gems earned in this country and radiate it to affect change in the "Ainciousness" of this island and by extension, all across the four corners of the Earth. Hempress has long possessed a zeal for helping others and over time has learned that this is only possible through experience and wisdom. She believes that while life is experienced through a personal scope, that our separation is an illusion. Charles Edwards is the CEO of LEO Technology Development LTD., the company under which he successfully launched the Pocket Antigua app with his partners. In addition to being a software engineer, Charles also teaches software programming and web development to local youth as part of the faculty of the GATE initiative. His mission is to usher Antigua into the digital age, where the sky is truly the limit. Born into a family where engineering and technology were a part of every day life, Charles started pursuing his interest in programming with the intentions of becoming a video game developer. At the age of 10, Charles taught himself HTML, which became the gateway to many other programming languages which he mastered over the years in addition to earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of the District of Columbia (UDC). Other accomplishments under Charles belt include capturing third place in the 2014 Google Games; the release of his first mobile video game, Color Invaders; and the creation of the Myst Carnival app released in 2016. After spending 10 years abroad completing a bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, a stint in the corporate world as a web developer, and a master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence, a passion for creation and problem solving led Sven back to Antigua & Barbuda, where he set out on an entrepreneurial path. Through a successful collaboration with three like-minded locals, the award-winning TickeTing App (Antigua’s first electronic event tickets platform) was born and has grown tremendously over its sort lifespan. Ruleo Camacho is a marine ecologist at the National Parks Authority of Antigua & Barbuda. He is an experienced research professional with a Master's degree from the University of Maine, focused on marine biology and marine policy. Doylechia Samuel's inner flame shines brightest when she is working with children. Having been a private tutor to many youngsters in her family and community, she is now working towards becoming a teacher. Honour, beauty, and morality are the principles that guide Doylechia's path. Linisa George is a poet, freelance writer, director and playwright. She is the Founder, Director and chief consultant at BGR Media and Communications Inc., a public relations, media, and brand marketing company. Linisa has a track record of over-achievement. She is co-owner of August Rush Productions, the director of The Young Poets Society of Antigua & Barbuda, and has won three National Youth Awards in Antigua; two for Literary Arts (2010 and 2012) and one for Youth Activism (2012). Naasira Mohammed always loved sports, and being a West Inidan, cricket was it. Funny enough, it was in the women in her family who instilled and encouraged this love from a young age. After studying communications and starting her career as a sports journalist, Naasira was offered the chance to work with her favourite team: The West Indies! She jumped at the chance, which brought her to Antigua. As of 2018, Naasira became the first female media officer for the West Indies Senior men's team and the second woman to hold that title for any international cricket team. As a student at the Jennings Primary School, Kadeem started calling into radio shows and winning prizes by answering quizzes. He soon had name-recognition on island and from there doors began to open for him. Today at 27 years old, Kadeem is a media professional with 10 years of experience, a medical student at AUA, and an award-winning creative writer, poet, singer and gender activist. In this conversation, Kadeem shares his wealth of experience including what it's like being a voice for change and dealing with opposing voices, how to redirect energy after moments of failure, and the importance of seeing yourself as an asset.
