Each decade since the mid-1990s, the United Nations has convened a high-level international summit – bringing together small-island governments, large-state donor partners, international organisations and representatives from civil society – to agree the next ten-year agenda for Small Island Developing States' (SIDS) development diplomacy. The fourth of these conferences (SIDS4) will take place in Antigua-Barbuda in May 2024, under the theme ‘Charting the Course Toward Resilient Prosperity'.SIDS4 is the most important of these decennial conferences so far, taking place at a critical juncture in the global context and at an especially challenging time for small island states. Consequently, Emily and Matt devote the entirety of this episode to a roundtable discussion with three key protagonists in the SIDS4 process:Tumasie Blair, Antigua-Barbuda's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UNAmbassador Fatumanava-o-Upolu III Dr Pa'olelei Luteru of Samoa, Chair of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) and Permanent Representative of Samoa (the 2014 host state)Dr Simona Marinescu, Senior Advisor on SIDS at the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS)The episode explores what will happen at SIDS4, how the agenda has been developed, and in which policy areas SIDS will make the biggest demands of the international community. Looking ahead to the new 10-year agenda that will replace The SAMOA Pathway, Emily and Matt ask 'What can we expect from the Antigua-Barbuda Accord for SIDS (ABAS) 2024-34?' and, crucially, 'How will it deliver genuinely “resilient prosperity"?'.Featuring:Emily Wilkinson (host) | RESI Director and Senior Research Fellow at ODIMatthew Bishop (host) | RESI Director and Senior Lecturer at the University of SheffieldFatumanava-o-Upolu III Dr Pa'olelei Luteru | AOSIS Chair and Permanent Representative of Samoa to the UNTumasie Blair | Deputy Permanent Representative of Antigua-Barbuda to the UNSimona Marinescu | Senior Advisor on SIDS, UNOPSResources:Programme page | Resilient and Sustainable Islands Initiative (RESI)RESI policy brief | A Global Bargain for Resilient Prosperity in SIDSSIDS4 website | 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing StatesRESI summary on SIDS4 preparatory process | Preparatory meetings for the Fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States: participation, priorities and outcomesSIDS Future Forum information | ODI webpageRegister to attend the SIDS Future Forum | Island Innovation's website Hosted on Acast. Find dem ved at klikke her. Tak skal du have, Steven.

Welcome to another episode, recorded at The Extraordinary Travel Festival in Armenia two months ago. And in this one, you can meet Romaine from Jamaica, David from Taiwan, and Odette from the Philippines. They have just completed the 193 UN Nations list and were all the first in their country to do so. Romaine Welds Romaine Welds is Jamaican-born and raised, and he migrated to the US in 2007. This was, in fact, his first time flying and travelling to a foreign country. Currently, Romaine lives in San Francisco and works full-time with an American airline, which has enabled him to travel the world. As a child, Romaine loved watching National Geographic shows, where he would dream himself away to far-away places. And never in a million years did he imagine that he would one day be accomplishing the goal of having visited all the countries in the world nor becoming the first Jamaican and Caribbean to do this. His last country was Antigua & Barbuda, even though Hurricane Fiona postponed it for a few weeks. Fiona was a powerful storm that caused massive damage and disruption across the Caribbean in September 2022. She left a trail of destruction, causing widespread flooding, power outages, and infrastructure damage. And interrupted Romaine's trip to Antigua & Barbuda. By the way, if you want to hear more about Romaine's last country, I've done three episodes from there. It's episodes 130-132 in your podcast app… Find them here. David Yang Our second guest is 57-year-old, David Yang. He's from Taiwan and has worked in International Business Development in the consumer electronics, video gaming, and toys industry. He visited many countries as part of his job. He's the first Taiwanese to travel to every country in the world, but he also lives in the US. He started to work on his remaining countries around 2016 after meeting a fellow traveller who convinced him to go for them all. At the time, he had a third of the countries to go to and completed the goal in July this year. Now he's working on a new goal – to complete 300 of Travel Century Club's list, and right now, he has about 19 left. The official TCC list of countries and territories has a total of 330 as of January 2022. So, I guess that he will go for the complete list after the 300. Odette Ricasa The last “193 baby” is 77-year-old Odette Ricasa, who became the first Filipino to travel to all the countries in the world as she arrived in her last UN country, Iraq, in August 2022. She also finished visiting all seven continents back in 2015. She's an active member of the “Philippine Global Explorers” travel community, where she heads the US West Coast chapter, and also a successful artist with over one hundred paintings, a motivational speaker, a talented piano player, and an author of six travel books. Odette has been travelling a lot longer than the two gentlemen at the table. Voice message From a Listener I got a voice message from a listener, Steven Ramsey, an American who lives in Bandung, Indonesia. He tells me that he listens to The Radio Vagabond while driving around on his scooter. Thank you so much, Steven. Great to hear that I'm with you on your scooter. I hope you're not getting confused listening to an episode where I'm walking around in an area with a lot of traffic. It might make you look over your shoulder if there's the sound of a big truck or a horn in the episode. I don't want to be responsible for any accidents. So, please be safe. But it's also what I do when I'm driving around on a scooter here on Koh Lanta, Thailand, where I am right now. I just take my Bluetooth headset and stick them in my ears before putting on the helmet. I can use Google Maps to give me directions so I know where to make the right turns. Actually, I started doing this when I was in Indonesia. Not in Bandung but on Bali. And I'm sorry to say that that's the only place in Indonesia I've been to so far. I'm sure many people would say that you haven't really been to Indonesia if you've only been to Bali. It's like, I get a little bit bummed when I hear of people who have to Denmark and have only been to Copenhagen. There's so much more to see… I really want to explore more of Indonesia, and I will take you up on a visit when I do.  I was curious about how an American ended up living in Bandung, Indonesia – and not in Bali like so many other American nomads I know. It's a long story that I'm going into right now. But Bandung, Indonesia, is now on my list, so I can visit him and get that story. I enjoy hearing from you guys, so if you also want to send me a voicemail, go to TheRadioVagabond.com and scroll down to the bottom. Here you'll see a little button saying, “SEND VOICE MESSAGE”. There's also my WhatsApp number, so feel free to send me a voice message with WhatsApp – as Steven did. If you prefer to write, you can also go to the contact form on TheRadioVagabond.com/contact and write me a message there. Either way, please let me know what you're doing right now as you listen to these words. Follow the 193 Babies You can follow Romaine on Instagram as @TravelingTheWorldWithRomaine, David Yang is best found on Facebook, and I've also put a link to Odette's books in the note section of your podcast listening app. Next on The Radio Vagabond On Sunday, I get to meet another one of my heroes, and this time one that I'd been following for years. Paul Barbado, aka Barbs from Geography Now. Every time I'm going to a new place, I put on the episode he has from that country, so I get a lot of background on the place I'm going. You can start looking forward to hearing my conversation with Barbs – on Christmas Day. But you'll hear from me again already in two days in our Flashback Friday episode when we go to a mosque in Dubai. And then, maybe a new diary entry about my life right now on Saturday. Yes, I started doing a new type of episode where I speak for 10 minutes about what I'm doing right now. I did the first one on Saturday. Please find it in your podcast app. My name is Palle Bo. See you.

Sometimes what we avoid like the plague is the very thing that hits dead center in our sweet spot. As the first black female CEO of a Technology company in Antigua & Barbuda, Janice carried a certain prestige. But she also carried a perceived availability to her time as a result of the small environment in which she operated. When she made the decision to step down and into her next role, it wasn't a slam dunk. She had to allow herself to “swerve” into the sweet spot she has now attained. About the Guest: Janice Sutherland is CEO and Founder of This Woman Can, an award winning leadership and personal development company rooted in career coaching for ambitious mid-career women of color, supporting them to re-align their careers while staying true to their personal values and professional priorities.   Her professional career has spanned over 25 years of leadership with prestigious multinationals in the UK and Caribbean, she crossed continents and make history when she became the first female CEO in the Telecoms Sector in her ancestral home of Antigua and Barbuda.   Pivoting into entrepreneurship, she knows only too well the hurdles and obstacles women face in pursuit of their goals especially those she coins the triple threat “ Black, Female and over 50”.    She is the author of international best-seller This Woman Can - The no bullsh*t guide for women who lead and the host of podcastThis Woman Canwhich inspires women over 40 to embrace themselves and dream big while achieving their goals and career ambitions..    Learn more at https://janicesutherland.com/ About the Host: Laurel Rutledge's human-centered approach, empathy, and understanding of individual needs make her a top-notch personal advisor and women's leadership coach. Crossroads Antigua Set on the gorgeous Caribbean island of Antigua, Crossroads is one of the most unique rehab centers available. It was created by legendary musician Eric Clapton after he began spending time on the island during his own recovery. Crossroads Antigua has a unique distinction that separates it from other drug and alcohol rehab centers around the globe. It was founded by legendary rock musician Eric Clapton to provide residents with therapeutic, supportive care in a safe environment. Crossroads is situated on the beautiful island of Antigua. Guests of the five-star luxury rehab center can expect to spend their days in an island paradise while recovering from addiction. https://worldsbest.rehab/crossroads-antigua/ Clapton founded Crossroads as a non-profit organization in 1998 on Antigua after regularly visiting the island for rest, relaxation, and recuperation. The famed musician realized that spending time on the tropical island improved and inspired him. Crossroads creation was to do the same for others who struggle with addictions to drugs and alcohol. Crossroads is based on a 12-step treatment program. While many luxury rehab centers have moved away from traditional 12-step treatment programs, Crossroads has continued to use it to provide healing for individuals seeking solace. The rehab center doesn't just rely solely on its 12-step program, however. Crossroads uses evidence-based recovery models and holistic treatment practices to give clients a well-rounded experience. Crossroads Antigua accommodation Guests can wake up every morning with beach views and can reach the sea in just a few minutes. The natural surroundings offer residents the chance to explore the local area and organized activities are provided. The rehab center is similar to a resort in look and feel. Guests will find casita style living quarters with private and shared rooms. Private rooms come furnished with queen sized beds, while shared rooms have double beds. Each room has its own en suite bathroom, a desk and chair, wardrobe, and patio to spend evenings outside upon. Residents will find a swimming pool, communal living room, lounge and outdoor space available. Crossroads Antigua Privacy Guests will find that the entire facility offers privacy like few other rehab centers. Crossroads sits on 25 acres of pristine Antiguan land.
