Carol came from a “medical family” and she herself worked as a physical therapist. So when her dear husband's cancer diagnosis was given, she pragmatically got into gear and started checking off all the boxes needed for their journey forward. What Carol was completely unprepared for, and couldn't even imagine would impact her the way it did, like a steel wrecking ball, was after he died. How did Carol support herself and her husband throughout his journey with cancer? How did she find her feet again after his death? Learn some of the many important things a person in this situation needs to know to make it more bearable for both yourself and your dying loved one. Bio Carol Banens' expertise comes from her personal experience with loss. The death of her husband six years ago sent her on a journey from deep grief to a place of gratitude and joy. This loss led her to become a Transformational Life Coach, a Certified Grief Educator, and a Grief to Gratitude Coach. Carol inspires people to integrate their grief into their life through speaking and coaching people to implement her C.H.O.O.S.E method. I'm thrilled to share the stage today with Filmmaker, Actor, Singer, and Certified Grief Educator, Grant Garry. Grant is the director of the documentary "Meet Me Where I Am”, which explores the topic of grief through individual stories of loss, love, and hope. It also focuses on how to "be there" for grievers, and what to do/say and what not to do/say. It features some really incredible people and voices in the grief space, and even some famous faces you would recognize that are being brutally honest and open with their grief which is SO refreshing! I was lucky enough to get a little sneak preview, and I genuinely loved this documentary so, so much. I might have shed a happy tear... or five! This film addresses topics and situations that truly need to be recognized and discussed more, and I am so here for it. It's so encouraging to see what Grant is doing here in directing this highly-needed film to help normalize grief. This conversation today is so needed in my opinion, and I think Grant has such a unique perspective on grief having been a part of this filmmaking process. I hope you enjoy it and that it resonates with you! In this episode Heidi Dunstan and I have a candid discussion about the importance of talking about and acknowledging one another in grief. In the past few years it is hard to come across another human that has been free of experiencingloss. We are all grieving. For some it is fresh, for others it is aged, but remains – because grief is not bad – it's a testament to have loved. This episode is a gentle reminder to yourself as a griever, or as someone who is in the sphere of another in grief that it is not simply the loss that must be acknowledged, but the path of healing and hope that comes from allowing others to be seen. To truly help; honour, have empathy, love, and be present for and with another in their journey. With allowing it to be in what it is – tears, laughter, dark humor, or even silence. This episode will touch your heart for certain. About The GuestHeidi Dunstan is a Certified Grief Educator and best-selling author. Summary:One of our favorite guests returns today, John Polo, along with Carolyn Gower. They have launched a brand new book, The Stupid Sh*t that People Say to Grievers. If you are grieving, this book may make you smile, or even laugh - it certainly will let you know you are not alone in hearing comments that were absolutely no help. Sadly, every comment in the book is something someone heard while they were in despair after losing someone they loved. Listen to our conversation. Prepare yourself to start nodding as you hear something that was said to you.Notes:John Polo is a coach, author and speaker. In January of 2016, John lost his wife, Michelle, to cancer. From the rubble of everything that he once knew, consumed by desperation and despair, John held on long enough until he found his hope. And he slowly rebuilt. Today John helps others through his social media, books, coaching, workshops, speeches and podcasts. From grief to dating, self-growth and everything in between, John offers a style of coaching that is not only effective, but also very personal and unique.  John is the author of three books, host of two podcasts and has worked with clients on thousands of coaching sessions. He has been featured on People.com, NBC, The Huffington Post, Yahoo, Fox and more. Carolyn Gower is a Grief Coach and Certified Grief Educator, whose husband, Tony, died a brief 6 years into their marriage, leaving Carolyn feeling alone and misunderstood. It wasn't long before she recognized just how grief illiterate our society is.  Now she dedicates herself to helping others find their way through grief. Contact: www.asiliveandgrieve.cominfo@asiliveandgrieve.comFacebook:  As I Live and GrieveInstagram:  @asiliveandgrieveTo Reach John:Email:  john@johpolocoaching.comWebsite:  johnpolocoaching.comTo Reach Carolyn:Website:  carolyngowercoaching.comCredits: Music by Kevin MacLeod

As a Certified Grief Educator with David Kessler and Grief.com, Michelle explains the Five Stages of Grief™️- denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance as well as the sixth stage- meaning through the lens of pregnancy and infant loss. She shares that unfortunately over the years the 5 Stages of Grief™️ have been misinterpreted by many, including mental health professionals. These six stages reflect where we are in our journey of grief at any given moment. They are about change we do not want. The stages are unconscious and natural responses to loss. They are tools to help us frame and identify what we may be feeling. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross explicitly stated that the stages “are not stops on some linear timeline in grief."  Not everyone goes through all of them or in a prescribed order. Everyone's grief is unique.  These stages can provide a roadmap for grief's rocky terrain and help us to be better equipped to cope with life and loss. How do you help a friend when they are grieving? Grief and loss are parts of life that we don't really like to talk about, and we all experience it at some point in our lives. Loss of a relationship, job, health, pet, or just about anything meaningful to a person can mean a need for love and support – leaning in. Heidi Dunstan, a widow, and Certified Grief Educator, shares her insights into how to help others grieve and ways to be a support in the darkness of grief. She shares the story of losing her beloved partner, Mike, at a time when he was preparing a special birthday celebration for her 40th birthday. In a candid conversation, Heidi shares what inspired her to teach others how to be present for the grieving in small and meaningful ways.       About the Guest: International Best-Selling Author and Certified Grief Educator, Heidi Dunstan has a passion to help others learn about grief and legacy. IS GRIEF SUCKING THE LIFE OUT OF YOUR LIFE? TODAY I have with me Mary Potter Kenyon who suffered 3 great losses in just 3 years, mined her pain and turned her grief into an outlet for creativity and helping others. Intuitively she turned to her writing to process her pain at first. But then, Mary began studying the science of grief. She believed that because we all experience loss, we must be built to withstand it. Mary was right, and is now a Certified Grief Educator, Therapeutic Art Coach, author of seven books, public speaker, and founder of an annual grief retreat. Bio: Mary Potter Kenyon graduated from the University of Northern Iowa and is a Therapeutic Art Coach and Certified Grief Educator trained under world-renowned grief expert, David Kessler. Mary is an author widely published in newspapers, magazines, and anthologies.
