As a personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach in the industry for the past 12 years, I've had the pleasure of working with everyday people, right through to elite level athletes at the highest level.Couple that with a 6-year career as a professional soldier, plus a lifelong pursuit of becoming the best athlete I can be, I bring a unique skillset to the world of coaching. It's the one percenters that separates the best from the rest. Mindset and Performance is the aim of the game. Jordan Aigner of Aigner Performance has been following my journey for a number of years, and jumped at the opportunity to join my Mentorship Program. He has been with me for the last month, in fight camp with Denis "The Bosnian Menace" Puric as we prepare to take on a superstar in the combat sports world...RODTANG!Denis has been calling for "The Iron Man" for years, and ONE Championship has obliged after a few good performances which elevated Denis to the upper echelon of the Bantamweight Muay Thai and Kickboxing rankings.Jordan has been an integral part of this fight camp preparation, as he joined me for the final deload/reload week of phase 1, before we launched into phase 2 of camp, rounding out with Peak Week this week.In this conversation, we discuss his experience as an insider through Denis's camp, which culminates in the Co-Main Event of ONE 167, which takes place at the Impact Arena in Bangkok tomorrow (8 June). This conversation was recorded Thursday 6th June, a few hours before Denis made weight and passed his hydration test ahead of the biggest fight of his life.Unfortunately, Rodtang did not make weight or pass his hydration test, so the bout will take place at a catchweight.Nonetheless, we are coming in hot, and will be looking to make a statement!#coachedbykobes  #livetrainperform  #livelifetofullest  #traintoyourpotential  #performatyourbest  #bosnianmenace  #watchitfreaksShaun Kober is a Mindset & Performance Specialist, with a unique skillset forged in the trenches, through the various stages of life."I shouldn't be in the position I am right now." Five of those years were dedicated to training under the legendary Buakaw Banchamek, where he was the only foreigner fighting under the Banchamek banner at the time. Following this training period, "The Bosnian Menace" moved to China for four years, working as a coach for Kunlun Fight League, where his role was to prepare the Chinese professional fight team for their competitions.During this period, Denis was recognised as one of their best coaches. Denis and I crossed paths a few years ago, during my 5-year stint as the Head S & C Coach at Tiger Muay Thai, where he has been a sponsored athlete for many years.Whilst I haven't been on Tiger's books for a year, he contacted me April 9, we caught up for a coffee, and he told me he had the opportunity of a lifetime...his dream fight.RODTANG!This dude has been calling Rodtang's name for years.ONE Championship have obliged this callout, after back-to-back quality performances, which pushed him up into the top echelon of fighters on the Flyweight roster in both Muay Thai and Kickboxing."I can fight man. As an S & C Coach for Professional Athletes, it is imperative that I use my time wisely.Typically, I only have my athletes two to three times per week.Sometimes, it is a short 3 to 4 week period to start or finish camp.Other times, I get the opportunity to spend 8 to 10 weeks building a general base of strength and aerobic capacity, before transitioning to more specific speed/power and endurance/conditioning work.Regardless of the time period, everything I program needs to have a specific intent.I'm doing the biggest bang-for-buck drills I can, to suit the intent of the session/week/block/phase/program/camp etc.The RAMP protocol is my go-to, systematic way of preparing myself and my clients for the training sessions they are about to undertake.I see so many people just doing random work for their warm-up, which is better than nothing, but not optimal to prepare the mind and the body to get the most out of a structured training session. This formula can be applied to any training program, and should be tailored specifically to the modality of training, movement requirements, exercise selection, and individual needs required for that day's training session.Raise- Heart rate- Respiratory rate- Core temperature- Blood flow to working muscles- Viscous fluid to specific jointsActivate- Fire up the stabilisers- Connect to prime movers- Integrate synergists into compound movementsMobilise- Release tension in tight muscles- Increase range of movement- Align the joint to optimise movement patternsPotentiate- Practice/warm-up/ramp up sets- Refine technique and skill - Ramp up central nervous system to match the upcoming sessionThe RAMP Package is a 60-Day Introduction to the Mobility, Stability and Prime Modules, delivered via the Coached By Kobes App. 18 routines to give you what you need for as little as 10 minutes a day!- 5 Mobility routines progressing from beginner to advanced- 6 Stability routines progressing from beginner to advanced- 7 Prime routines progressing from beginner to advancedThis is Phase 2 of 3 in the Live Train Perform Modular Training System.Phase 1 - Build The Base Program (30 days)Phase 2 - RAMP Package (60 days)Phase 3 - LTP Foundations Program (90 days)Elements and principles learned in Phase 1 and 2 feature in Phase 3, the LTP Foundations Program, which is the flagship product! The Best Warm Up System You Will Ever Use!⇓⇓⇓⇓⇓Shaun Kober is a Mindset & Performance Specialist, with a unique skillset forged in the trenches, through the various stages of life."I shouldn't be in the position I am right now." Swiss 8 is a veteran-run organisation that is based out of Australia, that provides their people with an app that delivers their 8 pillars of health and wellness directly to their phone, so they can structure in and schedule the important cornerstone habits that will have a positive, flow-on effect through the rest of their day to manage their mind.Head-Up Charity is a veteran-run organisation operating out of the UK. Their goal is to build a state-of-the-art resort-style facility in the countryside, to provide a place for those seeking proactive mental health strategies they can then take away, and apply to their own lives on a daily basis, with the intent to also pass on these tools and methods to their mates who may be dealing with their own mental health battles. In this episode we covered:The lessons we've both taken from listening back to our first conversationThe power of the mindWhat is the vision for Head-Up Charity? How will they raise the funds required to facilitate the end-state?The lessons and the fulfillment is within the journey, not the destinationYou can listen to the first episode we recorded together here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1082945/8127623-simon-moloney-cgc-conspicuous-gallantry-cross.mp3?download=trueYour host - Shaun KoberInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/coach_kobes/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/performancefunctionaltrainingYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnOpTWXi1xKdamDBgzlfaPwYour guest - Simon MoloneyInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mo1089/Head Up Charity: https://www.instagram.com/head_up_charity/https://www.head-up.org.uk/Fighting Minds: https://www.instagram.com/fighting__minds/https://fightingminds.uk/Swiss 8: https://www.instagram.com/swiss.8/https://swiss8.org/BeSpunki: https://bespunki.com.au/Use the code "KOBES10" at checkout for your discount!Rate and Review: https://lovethepodcast.com/livetrainperform

“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.” This is one of the most impactful books I've ever read, and it is constantly on the top-5 list of books I recommend that everybody read. Where it sits in the top 5 will depend on the person I'm recommending it to, but this is a must-read for everyone who listens to this podcast!Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl's memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of others he treated later in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. Frankl's theory-known as logotherapy, from the Greek word logos ("meaning")-holds that our primary drive in life is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but the discovery and pursuit of what we personally find meaningful.Your host - Shaun Kober Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coach_kobes/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/performancef... “All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone.” -  Blase PascalWe live in a world that is constantly distracting us. And we allow it to. We condition ourselves to fill the silence. We don't know how to be bored anymore. We can't stand being alone with our own thoughts...and that's exactly why we need to cultivate the skill and discipline of creating stillness, and getting to know ourselves. In The Obstacle Is the Way and Ego Is the Enemy, bestselling author Ryan Holiday made ancient wisdom wildly popular with a new generation of leaders in sports, politics, and technology. In his new book, Stillness Is the Key, Holiday draws on timeless Stoic and Buddhist philosophy to show why slowing down is the secret weapon for those charging ahead. All great leaders, thinkers, artists, athletes, and visionaries share one indelible quality. It enables them to conquer their tempers. To avoid distraction and discover great insights. To achieve happiness and do the right thing. Ryan Holiday calls it stillness--to be steady while the world spins around you.I recently finished reading this book, and I was reminded of its influence and impact via the conversation with last weeks guest, Alex De Fina. So many self-help books and gurus sprout the benefits of saying "YES."Whilst this mindset can certainly be beneficial at times, it can also create more problems because when you say yes to one thing, you're saying no to many others.Sometimes in life, it is more powerful to cultivate the habit of saying "NO!"Saying no at the right time then opens up the time, space, and freedom to say yes to the things that really matter to you. Brad is a friend and online client. We served in the Australian Army together, before separating to embark on our journeys. Brad's journey took him down the path of becoming a police officer for five and a half years, before embarking on a new career path, which now sees him as a firefighter in Melbourne, Victoria. Brad also has an online coaching business that focuses on providing valuable advice and guidance to those going through the Victorian Police application process.I've had some amazing conversations with both my face to face, and online clients, and thought that a lot of people would benefit from being a fly on the wall.So that's exactly what the Client Corner is about. These episodes are open and honest coaching calls between myself, and the people who trust me to guide them on their health and fitness journey through life. I believe education drives compliance. Typically, if people know why they are doing something, they will be more inclined to buy into the process. You will hear my coaching and training philosophies come full circle in these conversations, and whilst I do provide advice and guidance, I also like to ask questions to guide people to the best answer that works for them under their specific circumstances. My coaching philosophy is: "If I'm not affecting my clients outside of that one-hour training time, then I'm not doing my job."My training philosophy is: "Give people a lot of what they need, and a little of what they want."Massive thank you to Scott for allowing me to record and share our coaching call for the benefit of the audience. He is a straight-shooter, and can make complex topics seem relatively simple to understand...which I massively appreciate!Luke is a heavyweight in the fitness industry, and has definitely played a part in my development as a coach. I attended his Muscle Nerds foundations course a couple of years ago in Singapore, and anyone who has been listening to the podcast for a while knows that I say often "A healthy organism is an adaptable organism."Luke's philosophy around training for health first, and utilising basic health markers like blood pressure, waking heart rate, and heart rate variability, has had a significant impact on my coaching and training philosophy over the last few years, and led me down a path of personal and professional growth, as well as tied in a lot of principles and philosophies I had already been using in my career. This is an incredible conversation for those just wanting to understand what we are thinking about as coaches, but also extremely valuable content for coaches within the industry, to learn from someone who has been in the game since long before the internet became the go-to source of information.Strap in, grab a notepad and pen, and enjoy the conversation. If you haven't already listened to the first conversation we recorded, I highly recommend you do so here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1082945/8050195-luke-leaman-of-muscle-nerds.mp3?download=trueYour host - Shaun KoberInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/coach_kobes/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/performancefunctionaltrainingYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnOpTWXi1xKdamDBgzlfaPwYour guest - Luke LeamanInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/lukeleaman/Muscle NerdsWebsite: https://musclenerds.net/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/musclenerds_health/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/musclenerdsYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJr3Uarkc2qlYz-JrDGFAzQPodcast: https://www.stitcher.com/show/muscle-nerdsRate and Review: https://lovethepodcast.com/livetrainperform

    How to create psychological safety

In this follow up episode from last weeks chat with @the.brain.guy Scott Robinson, I share some tools from one of the modules in my NLP Master Practitioner Course.During conversations, most of us fixate on words. What does this person mean and what shall I say in return?  It's been long established that words are the least meaningful aspect of communication, conveying just 7% of meaning (Mehrabian, 1972).For example, when someone tells you they're willing to help you organize a social gathering, but their voice is flat and their facial expression looks like you just invited them to an evening of electric shock torture…it's obvious something else is going on. Their words said YES, but the non-verbal communication – the other 93% – said SOMETHING ELSE.What is Neuro-Linguistic Programming? The other 93% of communication. It is a system for understanding and using the kind of communication that really matters. Master non-verbal communication and you become a communication master!Neuro: Referring to the mind or brain, particularly regarding how states of mind (and body) affect communication and behavior. NLP teaches a structural way of viewing mind and body states, developing mental maps that show how things happen and how to change course.Linguistic: Meaning that our mind and body states are revealed in our language and non-verbal communication. Language is the tool we use to gain access to the inner workings of the mind. Neuro-linguistic programming language patterns teach us how to access unconscious information that would remain vague and unknowable otherwise.Programming: This refers to the capacity to change our mind and body states. You've heard the term living on autopilot, right? To someone trained, this would mean that you are living according to your programming, which consists of habitual thoughts, feelings, reactions, beliefs, and traditions. Someone trained in neuro-linguistic programming knows how such programs are structured in the mind and how to access them through conversation so that outdated programs and autopilot behaviors can be changed.Your host - Shaun KoberInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/coach_kobes/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/performancefunctionaltrainingYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnOpTWXi1xKdamDBgzlfaPw

"Wait until you're my age, you'll understand what I'm talking about."Everyone has heard this uttered to them by many different people, multiple times over the years. I can't recall how many times I've heard this...yet, I'm the one saying it now.As we age, we are accumulating more and more dysfunctional patterns and muscular imbalances. The less time we spend on addressing them, the more they will start speaking to us. If I have two parallel lines, it doesn't mater how far I follow them, the distance between them will remain the same. However, if they are only 1 degree apart, I won't see the discrepancy close to the origin, however, the further I move away from the origin, the more apparent that discrepancy becomes. Our joints are the same. This is where discomfort becomes pain. This pain is our "check engine light" informing us something is not quite right.Understanding recruitment patterns can help us identify when things are working well, as well as when they are not. When we identify less than optimal recruitment patterns, or joint misalignment, we can then address them to help manage, improve, and even alleviate chronic pain.Links mentioned in the show.Training tips as we age: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1082945/7783399-training-tips-as-we-age.mp3?download=trueYouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0j6d2yWtz2ULower crossed syndrome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqGw7_qzWbgUpper crossed syndrome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5vF0xTYcvk&t=42sIG handle: https://www.instagram.com/coach_kobes/Swiss 8 app: https://swiss8.org/the-app/BeSpunki: https://bespunki.com.au/USE THE CODE "KOBES10" FOR YOUR DISCOUNTRate and Review: https://lovethepodcast.com/livetrainperform

    My thoughts on Afghanistan

I have been accused of being a baby killer.I have been called a puppet of my Government sent to invade another country and do the dirty work on the ground. I've been assured that the work that my teams and I did was a waste of time and that the lives we lost was karma for being in another country. The list of accusations and verbal abuse and simple ignorance goes on and on...however I don't lose any sleep about the opinions of others that haven't been in my boots, yet shout the loudest about war being unjust and morally wrong etc.Regardless of what the official Government title or role of each battlegroup was, my job was to look after my mates to the best of my ability, along with the Afghani soldiers and security forces we were mentoring to provide stability in their own country once we left. Some of these soldiers had experienced life under the Taliban regime. We fought side by side with them, and we earned their respect, as they did ours. They knew we would one day leave the country, and the weight of the country would be left on their shoulders. We also worked with soldiers whom had not experienced the Taliban regime. They were lazy. They were high all the time. They ran at the first sign of trouble, and left us on our own to fight our way out of sticky situations. They expected us to be there to save their arses, and acted accordingly. We didn't trust them. Unfortunately, the majority of the soldiers we worked with were the latter, so it's no surprise to see the rapid decline of security forces in Afghanistan recently, with the Taliban strolling back into power.A lot of people that had boots on the ground are struggling with the fact that Afghanistan was retaken so easily, after 20 years, countless lives and injuries/casualties, and trillions of dollars spent trying to build a better future for the local people. If you're in that position, rest assured that your contribution showed a generation of Afghanis what life could be like, and hopefully, inspires the resistance to rise up and crush the Taliban's reign of terror that has flared up across the country once again. I have no doubt that the atrocities that will be shared to the world in the coming weeks and months will have people calling for us to go back in and do something. Undoubtedly, these will be the same people that were calling for us to leave... The recent pictures and videos of civilians desperately trying to escape should paint a picture as to how terrified people are of the Taliban, and the grim future that most Afghani's will likely face.My thoughts are with my Afghani brothers who stood side by side with Australian soldiers to fight a common enemy, as well as for those who cannot defend themselves.Your host - Shaun KoberInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/coach_kobes/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/performancefunctionaltrainingYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnOpTWXi1xKdamDBgzlfaPwSwiss 8: https://www.instagram.com/swiss.8/https://swiss8.org/ Head Up Charity: https://www.instagram.com/head_up_charity/https://www.head-up.org.uk/Fighting Minds: https://www.instagram.com/fighting__minds/https://fightingminds.uk/Rate and Review: https://lovethepodcast.com/livetrainperform

I've had so many great conversations with friends and colleagues about what we see happening in the fitness industry, and thought to myself, "I wish we would have recorded that." ...So that's exactly what the Coaches Corner is about. In this second installment of a conversation I had with Jon Le Tocq of Storm Force Fitness, we discuss how people consider criticism as a negative thing, whereas people with a growth mindset take that criticism as feedback. We also speak on how to not just gather information, but take new information, apply it, and figure out how to tweak and adjust the principles to apply to different clients, as well as different aspects of life.We round out the episode with a great discussion around the difference between exercising and training. Whilst there is a time and a place for both, training is in my mind far superior, because it forces you to look at areas of your health and fitness that may be lacking, that you can then target through a well rounded training, nutrition, recovery and stress management plan.Fitness for me is being able to do whatever I want to do, at any time, with minimal limitations, because I've prepared myself to be able to perform at a multitude of tasks across a broad spectrum of skills acquired through a targeted, periodised training program. Please note that the original conversation went for about 90 minutes, so I recommend listening to the entirety of the conversation to understand the full context, as there is some crossover between the topics we cover...which will be/have been dropped as separate episodes. Coaches Corner: Principles are few, methods are many

I've had so many great conversations with friends and colleagues about what we see happening in the fitness industry, and thought to myself, "I wish we would have recorded that." ...So that's exactly what the Coaches Corner is about. In this conversation I had with Jon Le Tocq of Storm Force Fitness, we discuss how most people that are spruiking specific methods of training or ways of eating, are typically trying to sell you something. Most great coaches are going to teach you the principles of progress, and guide you towards your own answers and methods that align with those principles, but allow you to choose the right tool for the job in your own individual circumstances. We also dive into the impact that social media has on shaping what people think they need to do in order to get the results they want.Social media is a highlight reel. It doesn't show the countless hours, discipline, and hard work put into the fundamentals over years and years of being consistent at the basics. What you see high level athletes doing now, is not what got those high level athletes to that point. Master the basics of movement, and it will open up many other options. Please note that the original conversation went for about 90 minutes, so I recommend listening to the entirety of the conversation to understand the full context, as there is some crossover between the topics we cover...which will be/have been dropped as separate episodes.
