In this first episode of a three-part series, we are digging in to why we so often resist making positive changes in our lives. Resistance isn't simply stubbornness or laziness; it can be your brain's way of keeping you safe. The key is to recognize what our resistance is trying to tell us, so that it doesn't hold us back. Key Takeaways:Remember that resistance is often a self-protection mechanism, not laziness or stubbornnessBe alert to the four ways that resistance might show up: emotionally, cognitively, socially, and physicallyInstead of fighting resistance, get curious about what it's trying to protectTake the smallest possible step toward desired change to build confidence graduallyLab ExperimentStep 1: AwarenessThe next time you notice yourself pushing back against a change - even a positive one - pause and notice what's happening in four areas:Your emotions: What feelings are coming up? Your body: Where do you feel the resistance physically? Your thoughts: What story are you telling yourself? Your relationships: How might this change affect your connections with others? Step 2: CuriosityWhen you notice resistance, instead of saying "Why can't I just do this?" try asking "What might I be trying to protect?" Step 3: Incremental Action. Ask yourself "What's the smallest possible step I could take toward this change?" Recent quality scandals involving Japanese pharmaceutical companies have raised concerns among many Chinese tourists and business travelers who say such incidents may erode their trust in Japanese drugs and health products. Li Xiang, a 42-year-old visitor from Shanghai on a business trip in Tokyo, expressed surprise upon learning about kidney disorders linked to Kobayashi Pharmaceutical's dietary supplements containing red yeast rice and Kyokuto's manipulation of test records for the gastrointestinal medicine Seirogan. He noted that Japanese products have long been trusted.42岁的上海游客李翔在东京出差时,得知小林制药含有红曲米的膳食补充剂与肾脏疾病有关,以及京东公司篡改胃肠药物正露丸的检测记录后,他表示惊讶。 I'm not entirely surprised. We've seen in the news that in Japan, the older generation is still very dedicated and follows rules diligently, but it seems like the younger generation has changed somewhat," Li said.“但我并不完全感到惊讶。可以在新闻中看到,日本的老一代仍然非常敬业,勤奋地遵守规则,但似乎年轻一代已经有所改变。”"When I buy health products or medicines in Japan, I feel a bit worried that the quality of the products may not be as guaranteed as people imagine."“当我在日本购买保健品或药品时,我有点担心产品的质量可能不像人们想象的那样有保证。”Before making a purchase, Li does a lot of research, searching for information online and relying on recommendations from friends, so as to ensure the product meets the standards that make him feel comfortable. Zhao Zhijie, a 60-year-old tourist from Shanghai, also usually buys medicine based on recommendations from friends.60岁的上海游客赵志杰也经常根据朋友的推荐买药。"The scandals involving Japanese pharmaceutical companies will affect my confidence in their products," she said in front of a drugstore in Tokyo's Shibuya district on Saturday.5月4日,她在东京涩谷区的一家药店前表示:“涉及日本制药公司的丑闻将影响我对他们产品的信心,” Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare announced that as of May 1, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical had reported 270 hospitalized patients due to the development of kidney diseases and other issues after taking its dietary supplements containing red yeast rice, or beni-koji. The Osaka-based drugmaker also reported five deaths linked to such products. Consequently, Kyokuto voluntarily recalled 5.16 million units of the affected Seirogan from pharmacies nationwide. Kyokuto said an internal investigation discovered falsification of test results, failure to conduct acceptance tests for raw materials, and falsification of manufacturing records during the period from December 2021 to July 2022. Lack of awarenessThe company attributed the causes of the violations in this instance to a lack of compliance awareness among employees and deficiencies in its compliance framework. Through our investigation, it became apparent that a corporate culture prioritizing the continuation of manufacturing and shipment over compliance with laws and procedures contributed to the aforementioned violations," said Kyokuto in a news release issued on April 26. Concerns about fraudulent manufacturing of pharmaceuticals have been raised nationwide. Diving into the lessons and ideas music producer, Rick Rubin, can offer us in our quest of becoming a great artist from his book: The Creative Act: A Way of Being-----3:15 - The Power of AwarenessThe universe is only as large as our perception of it. When we cultivate our awareness, we are expanding the universe. This expands the scope, not just of the material at our disposal to create from, but of the life we get to live.7:30 - SubmergeIn service of this robust instinct, consider submerging yourself in the canon of great works. Read the finest literature, watch the masterpieces of cinema, get up close to the most influential paintings, visit architectural landmarks. There's no standard list; no one has the same measure of greatness…The goal is not to learn to mimic greatness, but to calibrate our internal meter for greatness.9:50 - The Artist MindsetThe artist's goal is not merely to produce, but to make the finest work they are capable of. The business thinks in terms of quarterly earnings and production schedules. The artist thinks in terms of timeless excellence.Fear of criticism. Attachment to a commercial result. Competing with past work. Time and resource constraints. The aspiration of wanting to change the world. And any story beyond, “I want to make the best thing I can make, whatever it is,” Are all undermining forces in the quest for greatness11:40 - On RulesSo rather than climbing the five tallest mountains in the 80 days, what was stopping me from topping all 14 death zone mountains in the quickest time imaginable? I struggled to think of too many pitfalls. Only politics or money. Or maybe an avalanche or a crevasse, if I'm really unluckyThe goal of shaving off an entire seven years from the world record was wildly ambitious, but I quickly embraced the idea. The bottom line was to climb as quickly as possible, whatever the weather, Nims style14:40 - When is The Work Done? How do we know when an idea is flourishing? Often the most accurate signposts are emotional, not intellectual. Excitement tends to be the best barometer for selecting which seeds to focus on.The call of the artist is to follow the excitement. Where there's excitement, there's energy. And where there is energy, there is light. 16:30 - How an Artist Defines Success Success occurs in the privacy of the soul. It comes in the moment you decide to release the work, before exposure to a single opinion. When you've done all you can to bring out the world's greatest potential. When you're pleased and ready to let go. 19:15: Why Create Art? The reason we're alive is to express ourselves in the world. And creating art may be the most effective and beautiful method of doing so. Art goes beyond language, beyond lives. It's a universal way to send messages between each other and through time-----Check out my new book Chasing Greatness: Timeless Stories on the Pursuit of Excellence

“Our relationships really shape how we feel, how we think, how we remember things, how we tell the story of who we are, the sense of self, where you focus your attention, what gives you a sense of purpose.Relational integration in a family leads to the growth of neural integration inside the child's nervous system. Every time you say regulation—like regulating emotion or your mood, regulating attention, thought behavior, self-understanding, morality—it depends on integration in the brain. So the neural integration is the basis for optimal regulation, but it comes from relational integration. We all can follow Picasso's suggestion, which I think is really beautiful: The meaning of life discovering our gift. The purpose of life is giving it away.” (Dan Siegel)In developmental science, there are lots of debates between nature and nurture. And Dr. Dan Siegel's groundbreaking work in interpersonal neurobiology demonstrates that we are naturally wired for nurture—and furthermore, we cannot thrive without it.Over the past five decades, he has sought to explain through attachment theory and a study of the brain, how relationships shape our feelings, thoughts, memories, stories and personal narratives, and how all these offer an opportunity for us to integrate all of our personal subjective with the world outside us.Our relational tendencies and inner being are malleable—always growing and changing. We are under construction our entire lives, and that's good news for those of us who feel the weight of loneliness, relational struggle, or the challenges of mental illness.Dan Siegel's work helps us become deeply present to others—in friendships, romance, or parenting—by becoming deeply attuned to your inner life, including all of our emotions, plans, pain, and our ongoing and evolving stories. His research shows that caring and attuned relationships provide a safe and secure environment in which we can experience integration and gain insight into what is most meaningful to us. He calls this concept “mindsight”—how we gain an inner sense of self is intertwined with how we relate to others. And he offers how mindfulness and meditation are important to this process of becoming intraconnected. Life today is characterized by isolation and fragmentation, but Dan's wisdom and practices offer helpful guidelines on how we can grow whole—and persons in deepening, reciprocating relationships.Dr. Dan Siegel is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA. He has authored numerous research articles, books, and accessible materials that apply what we know about the brain to our most sacred and significant relationships. His many books include the groundbreaking introduction to interpersonal neurobiology, The Developing Mind—as well as Mindsight, Parenting from the Inside Out, The Whole Brain Child, and his most recent book, Intra-Connected.In this conversation with Dan Siegel, we discuss:The connection between the mind and the brain, and why that matters for our thrivingComing to terms with big, challenging emotions—especially fearHow psychological integration creates flow and harmony and helps us deal with chaos and rigidityThe scientific connection between focused attention, open awareness, and compassionate intentionHe walks us through a mindfulness exercise he calls “the wheel of awareness”The neurobiology of interpersonal relationshipsAnd we discuss how that impacts not just our spirituality and relationships, but society as a whole.About Dan SiegelDr. Siegel is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA. An award-winning educator, he is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and recipient of several honorary fellowships. Dr. Siegel is also the Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute, an educational organization, which offers online learning and in-person seminars that focus on how the development of mindsight in individuals, families and communities can be enhanced by examining the interface of human relationships and basic biological processes. His psychotherapy practice includes children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. He serves as the Medical Director of the LifeSpan Learning Institute and on the Advisory Board of the Blue School in New York City, which has built its curriculum around Dr. Siegel's Mindsight approach. He is author of many books, including, The Developing Mind: How Relationships and the Brain Interact to Shape Who We Are, Mindsight: The New Science of Personal Transformation, The Whole-Brain Child: 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child's Developing Mind, Survive Everyday Parenting Struggles, and Help Your Family Thrive, Parenting from the Inside Out: How A Deeper Self-Understanding Can Help You Raise Children Who Thrive, and his most recent, IntraConnected: MWe (Me + We) as the Integration of Self, Identity, and Belonging.Show NotesExplore Dr. Dan Siegel's Website ResourcesDan Siegel's latest book: Intraconnected: MWe (Me + We) as the Integration of Self, Identity, and BelongingPracticing the Wheel of Awareness (guided meditative exercises): https://drdansiegel.com/wheel-of-awareness/Emotional realities reverberating throughout our livesPicasso on meaning and purpose: “The meaning of life discovering our gift.
