This is the 4th Article club with Brendan SueSee, Michael Davies, and Dave Robinson. The article they discussed was:Sarah Metz, Benjamin Zander & Ina Hunger (09 May 2024): The suffering of students in physical education. Unsettling experiences and situational conditions, Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy, DOI: 10.1080/17408989.2024.2352825 This paper captured a wide range of unsettling PE experiences by taking different perspectives of 677 physical education students. It used a social constructivist approach to address two questions: (1) What kind of experiences are interpreted as unsettling by students in PE? (2) Which situational conditions are associated with students' unsettling PE experiences? We speak about some of the challenges for PE teachers whilst at the same time considering that the issues raised are not uniquely ‘PE' problems but also problems of society.

For over 30 years in the Australian state of Queensland, a final grade for physical education (in years 11 and 12) was given based on 50% theory and 50% practical, valuing movement and knowledge equally. This article was written in response to changes in a syllabus in the Australian state of Queensland in 2019 which awarded a final mark based on 82% theory and 18% practical or movement. Despite this unequal valuing of movement, the syllabus cites Arnold's perspective as ‘a philosophical and educative framework to promote deep learning in three dimensions: about, through and in movement contexts' (QCAA, 2018, p.1). Based on the syllabus citing Arnold's philosophy it is reasoned these principles (valuing knowledge and movement equally) will be evident throughout this Australian state syllabus. Confusingly, they were not. SueSee, B., Pill, S., & Williams, J. (2023). Dr. Haley Perlus is unique. Since she was 12 years old, Dr. Perlus aspired toward a career in sport psychology as a junior world champion athlete. Within one year of earning her PhD at the age of 28, she became a professor, well-known public speaker, consultant to national team and division I scholarship athletes, published author, and appointed industry leader. Together with her personal experience as an elite athlete and coach, and her fitness and nutrition certifications, Dr. Perlus takes a unique 3D approach to helping people achieve their highest standard of performance in sport, business, and wellness. In this podcast, Dr. Perlus shares her unique journey and advice to those interested in the field of sport psychology and those who want to make a difference in their own life and their clients' lives. Dr. Perlus is from Toronto, ON Canada and has a unique story to share regarding how she chose her career as a sport psychologist. She states, “I had a fabulous coach when I was 12 years old, who put a lot of pressure on me. In fact, one race he pulled out a $100 bill and put it in front of my face and told me that he had bet on me to win.” She explains that her coach really taught her about preparation from a mental standpoint to help her perform better. She adds, “he also brought a sport psychologist to come and speak to my team…and so putting the two together, how he was coaching me and what the sport psychologist was saying, there was one day when I went home, and I told my parents that I wanted to do sport psychology and I was 12 years old.” Dr. Perlus received her BA in Kinesiology from the University of Western Ontario and her MS in Sport Pedagogy from the University of Florida. She attended the University of Northern Colorado for her PhD in Sport Psychology because she always loved Colorado. Although the advisors, curriculum, and research were wonderful, she admits that she chose the school because it was in Colorado, and she loved the changing of the seasons and she could continue skiing. She shares that the number of PhD programs in the field of sport psychology was really “slim pickings” at the time in that area of the country. She recalls Denver University had a combined master's program and now they have a “fabulous” program thanks to Dr. Mark W. Aoyagi.  On her website, YouTube channel, and in her practice, Dr. Perlus shares Mental Toughness Tools and sport psychology tips. She also shares advice with those interested in the field of psychology. Throughout her journey, she surrounded herself with people who could mentor her and share their experiences and advice. She also states, “I really looked outside of academia as well” and “observed and watch what people who were applying the art or science of sport psychology was doing.” She mentions that being a sport psychologist is good and bad. She states, “sport psychology is great because you have this niche. Sport psychology is bad because you have this niche.” Some people may think that you can't broaden your horizons or apply sport psychology outside of the sports field. However, you can and should. Dr. Perlus mentions one of her mentors, Dr. Jim Loehr, who is a sport and performance psychologist who “completely went into the corporate world” with his sport psychology. If you are new to the field, you may wonder what is sport psychology or sport and performance psychology? According to the American Psychological Association (APA), “sport psychology is a proficiency that uses psychological knowledge and skills to address optimal performance and well-being of athletes, developmental and social aspects of sports participation, and systemic issues associated with sports settings and organizations.” Sport psychology has been coined the “Science of Success” because it studies how successful people optimize their psychological and emotional states for maximum results. Globally, the segment aims to humanize research by providing a forum to discuss the movies that draw researchers toward particular topics and studies, challenges and successes experienced along the way, and lessons learned that transcend individual journal publications (e.g., lessons learn that impact future research decisions). Each episode will feature an interview with one or member members of an authorship team. She and her husband Doug are big advocates for sports and physical activity, and they have donated to and organized many events.  Why Lois surrounds herself with people that do what they say they are going to do.  Her definition of Home: Harmony of Mind Expressed, and how Edmonton was almost like a second home to her for years as the sold Edmonton Eskimo's Souvenirs.  More about Lois's Dress for Success Course and remember - we only have about 30 seconds to make a first impression.  How her time as the President of the Junior League of Calgary helped her understand the importance of volunteerism and how volunteering can get you into your next career.  As women, we put such pressure on ourselves to be working full time and have it all together at home.  It's okay to ask for help.  The two most important ingredients that make up the recipe for respect: team and trust.  What it was like for Lois to start lobbying senators, and what the extra steps were that set her apart.  How she remembers everyone's name and details about them when she is meeting hundreds of people at any given point.  What it really is like to be the Queen Elizabeth II of Canada in the Province of Alberta and the magical experience of visiting Prince Charles at Highgrove and drinking tea with the queen.  Mentioned:  Junior League of Calgary  McGraw - Hill  American Symphony League Orchestras Canada  No Child Left Behind  Special Olympics Canada  Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra Hockey Canada Foundation Journey Into the Inner Circle:  Carrie Doll  @CarrieADoll – Twitter @carriedollconsulting – Instagram  Carrie Doll – Facebook  Please rate, review and follow the podcast! Improving our Mental Toughness with Dr. Haley Perlus  Dr. Perlus shares her views of mental toughness in sport and how we can build our own to help improve our sport performance or any goal that you might have for yourself!   * Mental Toughness is wanting it more than you fear it. The ability to press mute on the fears that you might have in sports and focus on the desire and the want and have that be greater than the fear is how Dr. Perlus defines it. * How do we build mental toughness?? Work on those mental blocks, which is a negative story that you are telling yourself that is debilitating your performance. By changing this story and the way you look at something can be beneficial. * Sometimes you just have to accept what is and when you do this you end up spending less energy on the mental block. So suck it up! * Dr. Perlus shares some tips she uses that helps in her career and performance; music, goal setting, imagery, and visualization.  So you know she’s legit: Haley holds a Ph.D. in Sport and Exercise Psychology, an M.S. in Sport Pedagogy (coaching behavior), numerous fitness and coaching certifications. The former elite Alpine ski racer is an expert inspiring, motivating and empowering athletes and teams of all types to achieve peak results. An adjunct professor at the UCCS, a seminar leader at top sport and fitness conferences, a consultant to National Team and Division I scholarship athletes, an appointed Industry Leader by International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association, and four-time author.
