This is part 2 of our memorial podcasts about Robin Jones who dies on May 21, 2024.  The photo of him is one I took in 2014 while at the funeral of John Ross Schroeder in Watford, Hertfordshire. UK.   Look at the end of this note for links referred to in the podcast.   Here's what I wrote initially on Facebook: I was saddened to hear about the death of long-time minister Robin Jones from the United Kingdom. He died unexpectedly on May 21, 2024 at the age of 88. I took this photo of Mr. Jones at the funeral of John Ross Schroeder on March 20, 2014, in the United Kingdom. While there we got together for dinner to discuss many things that have happened in our lives in 50 years.   Robin Jones was a pillar of the Church, serving as faculty at Ambassador College in Bricket Wood during my two years there. His was the Faculty Advisor to the Portfolio, the College newspaper I worked for. I was fortunate to be part of the student's trip to Israel in June 1969 which, he led. As as senior I was on the Church visiting programme and visited brethren in the London area with regularity with him. It's been an honor to know him and his wife Shirley who preceded him. _____________________   Links: Robin Jones sermon on March 2, 2014 about the History of the Work   Part 1 - The life of Robin Jones as told by son Rolfe and daughter Danielle Feith.      Rolfe Jones Aug 3, 2024 sermon about his father Robin Jones

Contributor: Jason Papazian MD, Travis Barlock MD, Jeffrey Olson Summary: In this episode, Dr. Travis Barlock and Jeffrey Olson meet in the studio to discuss several clips from Dr. Jason Papazian's talk at the event “Laboring Under Pressure, Managing Obstetric Emergencies in a Global Setting” from May 2023. This event was hosted at the University of Denver and was organized with the help of Joe Parker as a fundraiser for the organization Health Outreach Latin America (HOLA).   Dr. Jason Papazian practices Obstetric Anesthesiology for the Maternal Fetal Care Unit at Children's Hospital Colorado. He is the Assistant Program Director of Didactics for the Anesthesiology Residency at the University of Colorado, as well as the Faculty Advisor to Residents and Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellows.   During his talk, Dr. Papazian walks the audience through the steps of a maternal cardiac arrest from initial rapid response, to intubation, CPR, ACLS, and eventually emergency cesarean section.   Some important take-away points from this talk are: The basics save lives. Focus on oxygenating the patient and providing high quality CPR In order to maximize blood return during CPR on an obstetric patient, manually retract the gravid uterus to the left If an arresting mother does not obtain return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) by 4 minutes, the most qualified person should perform a rapid 1-minute bedside cesarean section. This has mortality benefits for both the mother and the infant.   Other medical topics discussed include changes in the obstetric patient's physiology, roles during a rapid response, steps of intubation, causes of cardiac arrest, management of cardiac arrest, and how pregnancy does (and doesn't) change ACLS.   References Bennett TA, Katz VL, Zelop CM. All the while, the number of bitcoin blocks left until the next halving continues to decrease approximately every 10 minutes. On today's episode, we speak to American Math Teacher Jason Maier. Jason has come to the realization there is a gap in Bitcoin education from the perspective of a liberal, a progressive, or a leftist-minded person. Jason is currently working on a book entitled "A Progressive's Case For Bitcoin," with a foreword written by Peter McCormack. The Sports Deli Podcast - Where Everyone Deserves a Seat at the Table; An Anti-Racist, Equality Pod

Dr. Shaun Anderson grew up in Arkansas and it wasn't easy to say the least. He was homeless twice. He attended both an HBC (Historical Black College) and a PWI (Predominately White Institution). He was the first and last African-American to be in his doctoral program. And sadly, he had to deal with so much racism at the University of West Virginia, it took him a couple of years to heal from the trauma from all the gas lighting, lies, and public humiliation on social media. Years later when Dr. A. attended a conference, someone that was in his program, much to Dr. Anderson's surprise apologized to him for how he was treated. Dr. Anderson, who is an Assistant Professor of Organizational Communication and Faculty Advisor for the Institute of Business Ethics and Sustainability at Loyola Marymount University, has a 4.5 (out of 5) rating on RateMyProfessor.Com where many of his former students call him hilarious, relatable, and caring. While 61 percent of Americans say that athletes have a right to free speech and it is their decision to speak out for social justice, 35 percent call sports their "escape" and don't want to see any commentary other than sports. In addition, 36 percent say that athletes speaking out hinders their desire to watch games. These were the findings of a Seton Hall Sports Poll conducted November 13-16 among 1,506 American adults, geographically spread across the country. The Poll has a margin of error of +/- 3.2 percent. Shaun M. Anderson is an Associate Professor of Organizational Communication and Faculty Advisor for the Institute of Business Ethics and Sustainability at Loyola Marymount University. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses across many sectors of the economy have found it increasingly difficult to find workers. According to Statistics Canada, the unemployment-to-job vacancy ratio reached an historic low of 1.4 in June 2022, amidst a record tight labour market. In particular, significant impacts have been felt within the healthcare and social assistance, construction, and manufacturing sectors. Today we unpack the causes and consequences of Canada's labour supply crisis. What, if anything, can be done to improve the situation? Moreover, our guest Sean Speer outlined in a recent white paper entitled “The Urgent Case for a Supply Rebuild: Investing in a New Economic Compact for Canada” that we are facing broader supply shortages, for example related to the supply of energy, housing, and ideas. The latter part of our discussion addresses the rationale for government involvement in a broader supply rebuild. What is the role of government, and what are the long-term consequences of inaction?   Guest Bio - @Sean_Speer:   Our guest today is Sean Speer. Jaleel argues that the redefinition of sexual violence within international law as a war crime, crime against humanity, and genocide owes a disturbing and unacknowledged debt to power and knowledge achieved from racial, imperial, and settler colonial domination. Prioritizing critiques of racial capitalism from women of color, Indigenous, queer, trans, and Global South perspectives, Jaleel reorients how violence is socially defined and distributed through legal definitions of rape. From Cold War conflicts in Latin America, the 1990s ethnic wars in Rwanda and Yugoslavia, and the War on Terror to ongoing debates about sexual assault on college campuses, Jaleel considers how legal and social iterations of rape and the terms that define it—consent, force, coercion—are unstable indexes and abstractions of social difference that mediate racial and colonial positionalities. Jaleel traces how post-Cold War orders of global security and governance simultaneously transform the meaning of sexualized violence, extend US empire, and disavow legacies of enslavement, Indigenous dispossession, and racialized violence within the United States. Work of Rape is the recipient of Duke University Press Scholars of Color First Book Award. Rana M. Today, Dr. Debra Leizman offers her best practices for bringing zest, vigor, and positivity into our roles as physicians. We learn how success and fulfillment work in tandem: When we do right by the patient, fulfillment is the byproduct. And when we make our top priority providing outstanding care to our patients, the hard stuff has a way of working itself out. And finally, we learn that what matters at the end of the day is not how many papers we've written, it's about being surrounded by those we love. So during your next shift, take the time to talk to your peers. Spend a few extra minutes learning your patient's story. See others as human beings, and learn from them. Pearls of Wisdom: 1. Find ways to bring zest, vigor, and positivity into your role as a physician. 2. Success and fulfillment go hand in hand. When we do what is right for the patient, fulfillment follows. 3. For mentees: take advantage of the open door policy. For mentors: see the mentee as a human being before you see them as a student.

With David Patterson, he co-designed and co-taught Berkeley's first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on “Engineering Software as a Service,” offered through edx.org. It is now a professional certificate in “Agile Development Using Ruby on Rails.” Our conversation touched many topics involving MOOCs. We discussed the history of MOOCs, how he got into it, creating Small Private Online Courses (SPOCs), how MOOCs call into question established teaching habits, some experiments he's planning that break those habits, and how to get student buy-in when using a MOOC in the classroom. When asked about something awesome in computer science, Armando talked about his love for the history of computing. One thing he observed is how much ideas get recycled in computer science. He even has a web page called “Master geek theater” of his recommended documentaries ranging from five minutes to three hours. Armando's Too Long; Didn't Listen (TL; DL) focused on MOOCs' long-term legacy. He does not think they will replace instructors. Instead, they will enable instructors to use their time more creatively because they have well-curated, interactive, battle-tested exercises available to them. Moreover, they will help us think about how to get the non-deep content experts involved in helping the students or their peers in learning the material.
