Grace Week Day 1 - Sippy Cups, Daughters and Grace

Unscripted One-on-One

I decided to do something new this year as we enter the week leading up to Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Because one of the greatest gifts that happened on Calvary was the gift of grace, I'm going to take each day this week and focus on that. I thought it would be good to remind myself of that amazing grace every single day. If you'd like, feel free to follow along throughout this week.A Lesson in GraceSeveral years ago, I received a lesson in grace and hopefully taught one as well. It was the bedtime hour and I was putting the kiddo's to bed. My youngest daughter requested some juice in a sippy cup to place beside her bed. She got used to doing this during a recent battle with the flu so I didn't mind agreeing to said request. My middle child heard the request and decided she would like a little bedside refreshment as well. One problem…she had been known to sleep right on through her “potty alarm”….if you know what I mean.Knowing that she would have this “issue” and trying to avoid a further problem, I kindly explained that she probably shouldn't as it might lead to her wetting the bed. Since I am a softie when it comes to my girls, the hour was late and I didn't have it in me to argue…you guessed it, she got a sippy cup too. Everyone went to bed without a hitch and I enjoyed the next 2 hours of watching television. After a few hours of down time, I decided to catch up on some work in my home office. That's when it happened.Small footstepsSleepy child walking in my officeQuivering lower bottom lipEmbarrassment on her little faceA tear forming in her eyeDecision time for daddy…..In that instant I knew this could go one of two ways. While my human nature was screaming “I TOLD YOU SO”, there was a still small voice. It softly whispered “be careful here Dad, you've got this childs heart and maybe even her future understanding of God right in the palm of your hand. Don't blow this!” After confirming that she had, in fact, wet the bed I decided to take a route she wasn't expecting me to take.Grace.I motioned to my little one to come and sit on my lap (thankfully she had already changed her pajama pants). I then wrapped my arms around her and simply, softly whispered that I knew it was an accident. I explained that Mommy and Daddy know what we are saying when we ask them to not do certain things. I then told her I loved her, it was okay and that we would go clean up her bed. Once all the cleanup was complete she was back in bed, asleep and her heart and spirit were still intact. Hopefully one day she'll remember that her father's love is like that of our Heavenly father. How many times have I done what I knew I should not have done? How many times has it gone as predicted? How often have I experienced Gods grace in those circumstances? God has every reason to hold my every foolish decision and move over me. My list of wrongs is much longer than the list of things I get right. Remarkably, "Friday" happened so He doesn't have to. "Friday" happened so each day I experience a grace beyond my understanding. Lesson learned and hopefully…a lesson taught.Grace.There's only graceThere's only loveThere's only mercyAnd believe me,it's enough…-Matthew West

There are times where traditional sensory feeding therapy is ineffective and it is in these cases where a more holistic, environmental approach might be taken. Greta Wyeth from Still Point Movement joins the Scrub Caps and Sippy Cups on the show this week talking about the pelvic floor and how we can reeducate it. She discusses the fascia and finding the pelvic floor muscles. Greta runs a post-rehab pilates studio and for the past 10 years, she has worked with women on strengthening their pelvic floor. She also educates women on the importance of balance, stability, and movement.    Greta created a course to help women learn how to strengthen their pelvic floor from home. This course focuses on anatomy and physiology, the purpose of the pelvic floor, movement, women's health advocacy, and tips on navigating the medical system to get needed care.   Greta discusses how to reeducate the pelvic floor after childbirth. She explains that re-educating is NOT restoring and that you will never go back to the pelvic floor you once had, but you can definitely do something about it!      Have you ever wondered what pregnancy, labor, and delivery do to your pelvic floor? Or maybe you are one of the ⅔ of women that experience pelvic floor dysfunction. Greta gives our listeners issues to look out for that may indicate you have a problem.     If you are preparing for childbirth, she teaches us exactly how to strengthen and prepare. Greta talks about muscles you never would have correlated to the pelvic floor.    How soon should someone start working on their pelvic floor? Greta suggests before, during, and after pregnancy. She reminds us to be careful of the pressure we put on the intrabdominal space during the second, third, and fourth trimesters.    What would you suggest for someone who is postpartum who wants to reeducate their pelvic floor? Greta shares that women can do this anytime after childbirth. Starting small and add more difficulty as you get stronger.    Greta answers so many questions for us in the episode including, what vaginal rejuvenation is, what our pelvic floor does for us when we have sex, how to strengthen our core, and so much more!    Where can we start? Greta gives step-by-step guidelines to get you started on improving your pelvic floor. BONUS! Having great organization skills, managing time wisely, and setting aside moments to relax and enjoy life are all qualities that are required of both mothers and businesswomen alike. Today, this is especially true with the ever-changing schedules that have resulted from the impact of COVID-19. Lauren Reed, founder and president of Reed Public Relations, can attest to the trials, tribulations, and true joys of this position as she is a millennial mother herself.

The ladies of the Scrub Caps and Sippy Cups podcast are joined by fellow CRNA mom, Alex Pudwill as she shares her son’s journey with congenital Cytomegalovirus (CMV). Her son Sam was suspected to have been exposed to CMV in the third trimester of pregnancy. Alex explains the signs and symptoms of CMV at birth and how she and Sam’s medical providers came to realize he had congenital CMV. Alex shares her struggles with mom guilt and how their family focuses on Sam’s milestones to keep them going. Alex is here to spread awareness about congenital CMV and help prevent this from occurring.  There are two groups of people that are most at risk for contracting CMV, immunocompromised individuals and unborn babies. Alex and Sam’s medical providers did not have any reason to suspect Sam had CMV in utero. He was growing fine and there was not a cause for concern during prenatal exams. She was shocked when she first saw him and he was covered in petechiae and had a blueberry muffin rash. Sam was sent to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) where he was cared for in the coming days.  Alex shares the struggles ahead for Sam and what it is like to have a child with CMV. From making the decision to have Sam receive cochlear implants to a brain bleed that will cause long-term issues and how she and her family overcame these obstacles.  Laci asks if there is any treatment for moms in the event that they are found to be positive for CMV while pregnant. Alex explains that there are antivirals available, but the treatments are experimental at this time. Ellen discusses the concerns from a perspective of being pregnant and not knowing what she could come in contact with and if that would have an effect on her baby. For many parents, this is currently a COVID concern. What effects does this have on the baby?  Alex gives tips on how moms can help decrease their chances of getting CMV while pregnant and shares some statistics with our listeners.   “91% of women are unaware of congenital CMV. 1:200 children are born with CMV each year and 1:10 of those are born with a disability.” Alex wants to get the message out about congenital CMV and what we can do as moms and healthcare professionals to prevent this virus from spreading. Please share this episode with a friend who could benefit from this information!  Alex Pudwill is a CRNA mom from Sioux Falls, SD. Her son, Sam, was born with congenital CMV. Ever since then, she has been trying to educate as many moms and soon-to-be moms as possible to prevent this very preventable disease. Cara is a wife, mother, and the Owner/CEO of Jazzie Beans LLC, a business she named after her Shih-Tzu/Maltese mix. Her dog Jazzie Beans is such a sweet and happy dog that Cara had to name her company Jazzie Beans to reflect that happiness and sweetness in her every day life and into her company! Before her company was born, Cara created the Sippie Clippie™, a patent pending clamp and cord accessory to prevent sippy cups from hitting the ground. When Cara's first son was six months old, he would drop his sippy cup all of the time. The first time he did it, he thought it was funny and so the sippy-cup-dropping-game began. Cara could not find anything on the market that would work on her high chair or table, so she went to the hardware store, bought a clamp that would fit over a high chair (which was super huge), drilled a hole and attached a cord and hair tie. Cara actually took her first prototype out in public to restaurants and received so much feedback. After receiving so much feedback, Cara wanted a small, fashionable clamp that was sleek and cute that would fit into a diaper bag or purse. While trying to juggle mom-hood and creating the Sippie Clippie™, Cara had another son. With her first son already an extremely hard baby and having a newborn, her invention had to wait. Her main job was to be a mom first!! It has been about five and half years since Cara had the clamp and cord device idea. After her wonderful boys were a bit older and she had a little more time to work on her project, she was able to hire a couple of engineers, an attorney and obtain the Sippie Clippie™ as it is today. It is an awesome gift for first time moms and baby showers! Please feel free to email Cara with any questions or comments, she would love to hear from you. www.jazziebeans.com"

In honor of Mother’s Day, which is coming up on May 13 this year, we have four moms with us and all  of them are priests who are serving at different Episcopal churches in Connecticut.   We wanted to know, how do they combine being a woman priest and being a mom? It’s easy to say you’re going to have good, strong boundaries between the personal and the professional, but it’s harder to actually do that. And then there’s the matter of judgment: Potentially the whole congregation where they’re serving might feel entitled to judge their child-rearing ability, and their child or children, by what they see or don’t see on Sunday mornings when mom is at work.     Then we had a side question: Do they want everyone to call them, “Mother” ? (which is listed in the current online version of “Rules of Address” from the Church Pension Group, although they do recommend asking for preferences ... ) Or just their children?    There are special challenges and blessings of their unique role.   Today’s guests include:    The Rev. Tracy Johnson Russell is rector of St. Monica’s Church in Hartford. She is originally from the Midwest, received her M.Div from Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, and was ordained deacon in 2003 and priest in 2004. Her son Thaeyer Charles is 7 and is in the second grade.   The Rev. Rebekah Hatch is rector of St. Alban’s Church in Simsbury. She is a native or Georgia, received her M.Div from Virginia Theological Seminary and was ordained in 2004. Her daughter Ruth is 12 and in the sixth grade, and her son Elias is 8 and in the second grade.    The Rev. Stacey Kohl is curate at St. Mark’s, Mystic. She received an MA from Bethany and an MA from Yale Divinity School and was ordained in 2017. Her son Henry James is three months old, and he was with us today (you’ll hear him on the podcast).   The Rev. Charlotte LaForest, assistant rector of St. John’s, Essex. She was raised in Florida, received her M.Div from Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, and was ordained in 2015. She has a son, August, who is 4, and 8-month-old twins Rowan and Evelyn. Charlotte also writes a blog (when she has time) called Gather Up the Crumbs: A Life in Sacrament and Sippy Cups (gatherupthecrumbs.wordpress.com    One of the first topics we discussed was whether their child-raising was more public, part of the life of the parish, or private, and separated. There was no clear preference: Some children were fully integrated in the parish, and Sunday services, while others weren’t - and there were different reasons. “Church is always going to be a complicated place,” one said.   A mom who’d recently been pregnant talked about how people in the congregation felt it was ok for them to make comments about her changing shape and status. It’s an issue for most all women clergy, regardless of whether or not they’re a mom. And just being pregnant in parish ministry is physically challenging!    A mom with older children talked about setting up a network of women from the parish who could step in and help out when there was a pastoral emergency that needed her presence.    Sometimes the moms feel guilty for the time they have to spend with the congregation. Tracy talked about the tugs that happen between needs of her own family and those of the family of God that she shepherds.    As far as a title - no one preferred “Mother” as a title for themselves. “Rev” got a thumbs up and yes, they know it’s not a grammatically correct usage.     And the children? These “preacher’s kids” range from enjoying church and wanting to be ordained themselves to rejecting it all (at the moment, at least). Regardless of what direction their children are leaning, all of the moms agreed that having children has taught them more about God’s unconditional love and their ability to see God in more moments of life.

Parents Outraged by Moldy Tommee Tippee Sippy Cups

Parents around the country are in outrage over moldy sippy cups from a popular brand. FOX's Alex Hein has more: This is Housecall for Health. Outraged parents are taking to social media to share photos of moldy Tommee Tippee sippy cups and it calls for the manufacture to investigate the potential health harm. Parents are claiming the mold on the popular cups can only be seen when opening their anti-leak spout. One parent said that his son's sickness persisted and he couldn't figure out why until he opened the spout of his sippy cup and discovered mold. Photos of the cups have been shared more than 45,000 times with warnings about mildew. The company issued a statement saying the mold issue is likely being caused by the use of non-recommended liquid, which includes thick formula milk, pulpy juice, and warm liquids. The company further said they contacted a concerned parent and are talking to him about his use of the cup. They apologized and are following up on any concerns. The statement also advised parents to clean the cups regularly and said to avoid any potential harm, they would be making a transparent valve available in the future.
