Playing bass was love at first pluck for Marty Isenberg. His career as a jazz musician began at the age of 12, after losing his father to cancer the year prior. A skilled amateur musician, Marty's father kept many instruments around the house that he would play for the family. After his death, Marty would pull one of these instruments off the wall and begin teaching himself how to play by reading tablature in Bass Player Magazine. The first song he ever learned was My Own Summer by The Deftones. Playing bass was love at first pluck for Mr. Isenberg. It was a cathartic healing experience, a way to stay connected to his father, and a way to creatively express himself. He went on to study at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music where he majored in Jazz Performance and minored in Jazz Composition, and received his Master of Music degree from New York University. He is now a doctoral candidate at Stony Brook University where he is the teaching assistant to the jazz department chair Ray Anderson. For almost 20 years, Mr. Isenberg has been part of the rich New York City music scene. His performing career weaves though many styles of music, from jazz, to classical music, to theater and contemporary music. Mr. Isenberg pulls from all of these experiences to arrange the music of his debut album The Way I Feel Inside: Inspired by the Films of Wes Anderson, adding his own voice and reimagining the music that helped to shape his own musical identity.Marty Isenberg LinksThe Way I Feel Inside (Album)Marty Isenberg WebsiteYoutubeMarty Isenberg TwitterMarty Isenberg InstagramInstagram / Twitter / Youtube / Website / BSA/ View More Episodes

The Wedding Singer. We've all seen the movie with Adam Sandler. But in the real world, being in a wedding band is more than just playing the first dance. Mike Zabrin is doing all of that and more. Originating from his original music band, Mike Zabrin's Funktastic, he performs every year on WGN Midday News, WGN's Nick Digilio Show, and with notable write ups in Bass Player Magazine, Jazz Corner, and hundreds of world-wide publications. Victor Lemonte Wooten is a unique human being. Born the youngest of five boys, he began learning to play music at the tender age of two. He started performing in nightclubs and theaters as the bassist with the family band at age five, and at age six, was on tour with his brothers opening shows for legendary soul artist Curtis Mayfield. Soon after, he was affectionately known as the 8-year-old Bass Ace, and before graduating high school, he and his brothers had shared the stage with artists such as Stephanie Mills, War, Ramsey Lewis, Frankie Beverly and Maze, Dexter Wansel, and The Temptations. But, this only begins to tell the tale of this Tennessee titan. Wooten, now a five-time Grammy winner, hit the worldwide scene in 1990 as a founding member of the super-group Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Continuing to blaze a musical trail with the band, Victor has also become widely known for his own Grammy nominated solo recordings and tours. He has played electric and acoustic bass for many world renowned artists, both in the studio and in concert.   ****Listen to this episode and subscribe! www.richredmond.com/listen   The Rich Redmond Show is sponsored by The School of Rock Nashville and Franklin! https://locations.schoolofrock.com/nashville https://locations.schoolofrock.com/franklin   DAVE POMEROY Dave Pomeroy was born in Naples, Italy to an Air Force family in 1956. He fell in love with music shortly after birth and started playing the bass at the age of 10. He moved to Nashville in 1977, and after early gigs with Sleepy LaBeef, Billy Joe Shaver and Guy Clark, joined Don Williams' band. Dave toured and recorded with Williams for 14 years, which eventually led to a freelance career as a studio bassist and independent producer. He has played bass on more than 500 albums with artists like Elton John, Alan Jackson, Keith Whitley, Trisha Yearwood, Earl Scruggs, Emmylou Harris and The Chieftains. Dave has performed live in concert and on television with many major artists such as Steve Winwood, John Fogerty, Willie Nelson, Chet Atkins, Duane Eddy, Earl Klugh, and Dr. John. In 1997 Dave was voted ‘Bassist of the Year’ at the Nashville Music Awards. As a solo artist, bandleader, and producer, Dave has released 14 projects on his own label, Earwave. In 1999, he created and hosted the radio series “Nashville Unlimited," for Nashville Public Radio which featured "live in the studio” performances and interviews with a wide variety of Nashville's finest singers, songwriters, and musicians. He has continued that tradition with his annual “Nashville Unlimited Christmas” concert, CDs and radio broadcasts, all of which benefit Nashville’s “Room In the Inn” homeless program, for whom Dave has raised over $100,000 since 1992. A featured columnist for Bass Player Magazine since 1995, Dave has also contributed as a writer to various books about bass playing and the music business. He has had his songs recorded by Chet Atkins, Don Williams, and The Sweethearts of the Rodeo, whose new album he also produced. He remains active as a session player and still plays live gigs around Nashville and tours occasionally with Three Ring Circle, his “jazzgrass” instrumental trio with Rob Ickes (dobro) and Andy Leftwich (mandolin/fiddle). Dave was elected to a three-year term as President of the Nashville Musicians Association, AFM Local 257 in December 2008. Meet Rick Cua. A member of the successful mainstream rock group "The Outlaws", garnering 2 Gold Records, he's toured with such acts as ZZ Top, 38 Special, Molly Hatchett, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Rod Stewart, Joan Jett, Marshall Tucker Band, The Allman Brothers, and the Dixie Dregs, then spending the next 39 years as a Christian recording artist. Eventually, he would release 11 albums, with six #1 songs and nine Top 5 hits, a Dove Award nomination, and 4 SAMMY Awards. He has performed across the United States and around the world for a large part of his life. Has toured all 50 states and performed in 14 countries. On top of that, he was the Vice President of EMI Christian Music Publishing for over 5 years back in the late '90s, early 2000s. Originally from Syracuse, New York, Rick's Italian heritage is apparent in his first instrument—as a young boy, he started on the accordion. He eventually moved on to the piano, trumpet, clarinet, guitar, and eventually settled on the bass—and rock music. Membership in early bands fed his musical obsession and led to paying gigs by age 14 and an inevitable career choice. Rick has also been featured in Bass Player Magazine. He also works on an annual tribute project called “Lest We Forget” that honors the musicians who have passed away that year. Rick talks about what it takes to be a successful bass player on stage, what that role is, and how important it is for the drummer and bass player to work hand in hand. He also talks about being creative, and don't always worry about getting a song on the radio. He also talks about to don't forget to document your music, and retain ownership if at all possible. Last but not least, we discuss as to whether or not Christian music is still a viable entity in this current music world. No one can predict the future. No one can ever know what’s coming next (except me, just kidding). A lot of times we have to roll with what life throws at us, regardless of how predictable we want our life to be. As humans we are creatures of habit, loving every minute of having a routine, going to work, coming home, advancing our career, staying organized and having everything in its place, and knowing that we have the power to make tweaks to it whenever we want, as long as its within our comfort zone. But as we very well know, life enjoys throwing the occasional right hook at us to see how we handle it. This is something that both Michael and I, your humble podcast host, have experienced in recent years. THANK GOD YOU FOUND A REAL JOB Michael had two career path options in his early years: music and journalism. As you’ll hear, his father was super happy he chose journalism, a job that he knew was stable and had a future (cough). As time (and the Internet) will tell you, music and journalism began to have more and more in common, debunking this “some industries are future-proof” myth. But lucky for Michael, he was able to merge his two passions into one as he worked through an array of music and non-music related publications and media outlets. His crowning achievement? Landing a dream job as the longest-serving Editor-in-Chief at Guitar Player Magazine from 1997-2018, also overseeing Bass Player Magazine, Keyboard Magazine and Electronic Musician Magazine. Score! EVERY ENDING HAS A NEW BEGINNING In 2018, not long after the magazine’s parent company was purchased by a UK-based firm, several members of the team, including Michael, were let go as the new owners reorganized and changed the way the magazines were run. While not a fan of the changes, the grieving process was short-lived. Michael got back on the horse and decided to launch a new endeavor that allowed him to continue his music journalism path. In October 2018, Guardians of Guitar was born, an online media outlet that evangelizes guitarists, guitar music, and guitar gear while supporting players of all ages, genders, skill levels and styles. ABOUT OUR GUEST Michael Molenda, former Editor-in-Chief of Guitar Player Magazine and Founder of Guardians of Guitar, joins us in this episode to share his journey from his humble beginnings in journalism and Guitar Player Magazine to his new venture with Guardians of Guitar, and what he’s learned along the way. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/behindthebackline/support

Where do you even start when you're talking with John Goldsby?  I mean, this is the person who literally wrote the book on jazz bass playing with his groundbreaking work The Jazz Bass Book. I've been reading articles by John in Bass Player Magazine ever since I picked up the instrument, and it was such a pleasure to chat with him for the show! More About John Since 1994, John Goldsby has been a member of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk Big Band (also known as the WDR Big Band or the Cologne Radio Big Band). From 1980 to 1994, Goldsby lived in New York City and was a fixture on the jazz scene there. He continues to contribute to the art form as a bassist, bandleader, composer, teacher, clinician and author. Mr. Goldsby has written two other instructional method books, Bowing Techniques for the Improvising Bassist and Bass Notes. Bass Player magazine says, Bass Notes is an excellent resource for intermediate to advanced jazz bassist.” The National Association of Jazz Educators says, Bowing Techniques should be a required publication for upright bassists!” Goldsby is a disciple and master of the Paul Chambers school of jazz bass playing, and spent many years perfecting his own style of arco (bowed) jazz playing. Through private study with Dave Holland and Michael Moore throughout the ‘80s, Goldsby codified and honed the techniques of arco jazz. Goldsby perceived a gap in jazz bass pedagogy in the area of arco technique, and published his first book Jazz Bowing Techniques for the Improvising Bassist in 1990. Since 1990, John Goldsby has been a featured writer for Bass Player Magazine with his columns “The Tradition,” “Mastering Jazz,” and “Jazz Concepts.” Goldsby has also written for Double Bassist Magazine, The Strad, and the International Society of Bassists Journal (ISB). In 2009, Goldsby was awarded the International Society of Bassists Special Recognition Award for Scholarship, a biennial award recognizing players and scholars who contribute their special talents, knowledge and support to furthering ISB ideals. Goldsby received jazz performance grants from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1988, 1990, and 1993. The “John Goldsby Plays Oscar Pettiford” concert, which was funded by the 1990 grant received much critical acclaim from the New York Times, Jazz Times, and the Village Voice. This episode is organized into three parts: Part 1 - life in the WDR Big Band and the experience of moving from New York City to Cologne Part 2 - why John is inspired to write books and articles and what this has done for his bass playing Part 3 - the concept of being a follower, developer, or innovator and what John would do if he wasn't a musician Links to Check Out: John Goldsby's website Upright Bass Handbook, Truefire Video Bass Course John on Facebook John on Twitter Videos featuring John "Plant Bassed” with WDR Big Band (bass feature) “Two For The Blues” with Superbass — Christian McBride, Ray Brown, John Clayton “Ligeti Split” trio with Jacob Duncan, Jason Tiemann “Solar” duo with Peter Leitch (arco bass solo) excerpts from this episode are from the following Goldsby albums The Innkeeper's Gun Space for the Bass The Visit Contrabass Conversations is sponsored by: The Upton Bass String Instrument Company.  Upton's Mittenwald model is a sister to their popular Brescian model.  The contrabasses from the Mittenwald school are characterized by a high-shouldered gamba pattern with outside linings on deep ribs, resulting in a fine orchestral double bass. Steve Cooper talks with bassist Juan Alderete. Juan met renowned guitarist Paul Gilbert in 1985 and the two started the ground-breaking metal outfit, Racer X. The band released two studio albums, both of which showcased the band’s incredible speed, dexterity and skill in what many have dubbed “shred metal.”  After releasing couple of live records,  the members of Racer X went their separate ways in 1988, but reformed eleven years later, recording Technical Difficulties and touring throughout Japan where the album reached gold status. Post-Racer X,he formed another Los-Angeles-based rock band, The Scream, which produced two albums then moved onto Pet. In 2003, he was approached in 2003 by Omar Rodriguez Lopez of The Mars Volta to be the touring basist for the run of the band’s debut album, De-Loused in the Comatorium.  After a successful, year-long tour, he became a permanent member of the group and went on to record The Mars Volta’s landmark second album, Frances the Mute (Universal).  It was this album that inspired Bass Player Magazine’s editors to put him on the cover of their March, 2005 issue. In addition to his work with The Mars Volta, he frequently contributed to Rodriguez Lopez’s countless solo releases and toured extensively with the Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group.
