Send us a text… these are the hardest episodes for me to share but mean the most 2024 was a crazy, unexpected, entirely “off the path of a normal” year for me. There were moments of extreme humbling. It was difficult. There were times I felt more alone than I had in years. I questioned so many things about myself. It tested me in ways I didn't think I was prepared for. It taught me lessons I didn't know I needed to learn. It was hard and uncomfortable but also very, very FUN! What I didn't see coming- and what I tackled this year - was a season of growing. A year of learning lessons and finding a way to root myself in a new me. I didn't see it coming- but I am incredibly glad it happened.This year, I tapped into · Grit that I never knew I had· Mindset that I thought would waver but didn't · And a reality that life is about being present and showing up as me- authentically me - and when I did that, it equated to showing up for everyone around me in a new and better way as well. Wednesday, December 19th my life came to a screeching halt. Life stopped in its tracks. My body had not been paying attention to everything my mind had been busy working on! I had things to do - places to be - people to meet - end of year goals to crush - and it was the holidays! My FAVORITE time of year! Or perhaps…it was the other way around. Perhaps my mind hadn't been listening to my body - or it was doing that selective hearing that I accuse Ryan of all the time where he only seems to hear what he wants to hear. Friend….I love Christmas cookies. Today is cookie baking day in my house and my countertops are currently packed full of bags of flour, cookie cutouts, sprinkles, and chocolate…it's like a collection of all the “naughty” items sitting there staring at me …calling my name!! Know what my favorite part of today will be? Not sneaking bites of frosting or “sampling” the goodies…nope! My favorite part of today is the chaos that ensues when my kitchen is packed full of all of the people I love! Christmas music blasting in the background, everyone laughing and tapping into their creative baking skills…my heart will be full of joy and happiness. That is the magic of this time of year. I will be present. I will soak up every second of happiness. I will make memories today. It's not about the cookies or the treats- it's family….and that is my FAV!Over the past several weeks, my client coaching sessions have focused a lot on how hard it is this time of year to be “healthy” and the struggles they face in making good nutrition choices. Since it was coming up almost every session, I thought- this is a good podcast topic! The concept of holistic wellness, self-healing, and the importance of treating the entire person rather than just a specific illness or condition has roots in many ancient cultures. Eastern medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, and traditional Chinese medicine are all based on this holistic, interconnected approach. One of my favorite offerings at Authentic Wellness is Food and Environmental Sensitivity / Intolerance testing. Most often people request this test because they are experiencing painful and uncomfortable digestive issues, belching, bloating, constipation, headaches, breathing issues, rashes and skin irritations….they want answers. They want to know if it's something they are putting in their body that is causing these uncomfortable symptoms. If they know what it is-they can take it out and feel better. The follow-up meetings are always incredibly interesting. Often, people are surprised with the items listed that are not as straightforward as Eggs, Almonds, Black Pepper or Strawberries. The things that catch folks off guard are the items on their list that are genetically modified in some way, or the preservatives and additives in the food and drinks they consume, the coloring dyes, the chemicals that have these crazy long names, the “substitute foods - all those sugar substitutes or alternatives - or the chemicals that are part of their skin care, home cleaning products or make up…. All of the things that are added to products to make them more appealing - changing the consistency, or color, or taste or smell…..those are the things that are the things that surprise people. Usually the response is- I don't even know how to say that word let alone know what it is???? How do I know it's in my food or in the products I am using…. Timely, because my friend Heather asked me the other day: “Missy? What are GMOs and should I be eating them? What's the deal with the coloring and dyes? My friend Jordan Weyker, Doctor of Physical Therapy is back and educating us on a topic that impacts so many, but we don't talk about it…it's private and personal- incontinence. It is believed that ¼ of all women have urinary incontinence and only 20% of the ¼ seek out professional help. If we look at men and women, it is believed that 1 in 3 people will have some type of incontinence. After menopause, women produce less estrogen. Estrogen improves muscle mass and strength; it increases collagen and connective tissues which is important for muscle health and muscle performance. Having less estrogen will decrease the efficiency of the pelvic floor muscles, the bladder lining and the urethra health. For the past 3 summers I've held a summer walking group. We always have the best time! We've explored hiking trails around our county, walking paths that are paved and gravel filled and explored neighborhood subdivisions for our walks. The physical benefits of walking are phenomenal- reduces blood pressure, lowers cortisol levels, improves insulin sensitivity…. channels stress…all the good things we need! I just wrapped up my summer goals at the end of July (I'm giving myself August as a rest month) and I am so flippin PROUD of myself! One of my goals - in a certain area was to stay the same- exactly the same! Now that was a new one for me! And it ended up being one of my toughest challenges yet! I felt amazing all summer long!!! With the goal of staying the same! I was so stinkin proud of myself for taking this on! Having goals usually means we are driving for big results and working towards something big and incredible….but this summer my big and incredible goal was to feel good in my own body and respect that my body needs different things from me now. It needs me to make different choices….and when I do that - I show up differently! And yes! I feel amazing!! SUGAR!!! It's the tastiest root of all evil that I think there is! Hands down- managing your sugar intake will have a direct impact on your weight and overall health…but these days - I'm most obsessed with how it negatively impacts my hormones! Even more specific than just “hormones” - I'm interested in how it affects the way my body shows up for me every day. It used to just be 1 week of PMS….and for me- it was always the week I was ovulating - usually about days 18-19 in my cycle-that I would start experiencing PMS symptoms. I would get tired, food cravings like a roller coaster, bloating, headache…just feeling crummy overall. But as I inch closer and closer to menopause - the last several years - it's no longer just the week I have PMS symptoms…. it's becoming every day. Like every day's a new surprise- each morning I wake up and think-well what's today going to be like? It's no longer limited to just the week I would be ovulating (cause that's all over the place these days) Oh-and don't get me started on body temperature and hot flashes- those lovelies like to show up at the least opportune times and I become a hot sweaty mess. Investigating and identifying the healthiest ways to manage and balance my body and hormones is a BIG part of my life these days - for myself as well as my coaching clients!
