I've been requesting interviews with Braxton for years, but never gotten the okay until this month. And you know what? In retrospect, I'm glad it took as long as it did. You know the saying “When the student is ready, the master appears”? Bill Dixon said that to me when I interviewed him for The Wire, and I feel like it's absolutely true in the case of the conversation you're about to listen to. I was not ready to interview Anthony Braxton when I first started asking. As it is, we probably could have talked for at least another hour, and maybe longer; we got along very, very well. Which was frankly not guaranteed going in. This interview didn't just take years to set up, it also fell through the first time we tried to do it, and I'm not 100 percent sure why but I have some suspicions. I do know that when I was working on re-scheduling it, I sent over my list of proposed questions in advance, which Braxton mentions right at the beginning, when he starts talking about the late Bob Koester from Delmark Records. I first started listening to Braxton's music about 20 years ago, and I feel like I've had a few major breakthroughs with it in that time, where it kind of made a little more sense to me afterward than it had before. Because it really is a learning process. You hear other things differently after you've grappled with his work for a while. The first big breakthrough for me was the album Quintet (Basel) 1977, which wasn't released until 2000; it's a live album that features George Lewis on trombone and Muhal Richard Abrams on piano. It was maybe the second or third thing I'd ever heard by him, so I mostly knew him by reputation still, as someone who made extremely advanced "weird" jazz that didn't really swing, but it wasn't free, either. Well, what I heard was not any of those things. It was a nonstop flow of energy, extremely creative but also swinging hard as hell, and the compositions were absolutely recognizable as such. It made perfect sense to me as jazz. The second breakthrough was when Mosaic Records put out a box set of his Arista albums, which I reviewed for Jazziz. Some of that music was difficult and alienating to my ear, but a lot of it was even more immediately accessible than I had expected it to be. If you've never listened to Braxton at all, you could do a whole lot worse than to start with New York, Fall 1974 or Five Pieces 1975, which were two of his first Arista releases and really do seem like his attempts to make music that would catch people's ear right away. The third and final breakthrough moment wasn't an album, it was a book – Forces In Motion, by Graham Lock. Lock went on tour with Braxton's quartet in England in the mid-80s, watching all the gigs, and interviewing all the group members repeatedly, and he gives you a 360 degree portrait of all of them as musicians and as human beings. It's one of the best books about music and musicians I've ever read, I recommend it unequivocally. When I was writing this intro, I looked on the hard drive where I keep most of my music, and I was surprised to find that I only actually own about 40 Anthony Braxton releases, including the individual albums that are contained in the Mosaic box and another box of his Black Saint albums from the 1980s. I honestly thought I had more. But among the others are a 3CD set of large ensemble pieces, a 12CD set of pieces for an a cappella ensemble, a 4CD set of improvisations for quartet, and a 4CD opera, all of which feature one long track per CD. I also have a 7CD set of the music of Lennie Tristano, Warne Marsh and other related musicians, an 11CD set of Charlie Parker tunes, a 13CD set of live recordings of standards, and an audio Blu-Ray containing 12 pieces ranging in length from 40 to 70 minutes. All told, I probably have around 80 hours' worth of Anthony Braxton's music in my house. If I wanted to, I could spend a long weekend listening to nothing but his work. And that's probably about ten percent of his total recorded output, maybe less. The man's catalog could fill a room. He's put out two mega releases just this month. The first is that audio Blu-Ray, which is called 12 Comp (ZIM) 2017 and features several different ensembles of between six and nine musicians including harp, cello, accordion, and horns, playing as I said long single pieces composed and then improvised upon using a highly specific and codified musical language of Braxton's own devising. The second is Quartet (Standards) 2020, the 13CD collection of live recordings from January 2020, when he played nine concerts in three cities: Warsaw, Poland, London, England, and Wels Austria, with a conventionally structured quartet: saxophone, piano, bass, drums. As its title suggests, they played standards. There are 67 songs on the box, with no repeats. There are tunes by Thelonious Monk, by Sonny Rollins, by Wayne Shorter, by Andrew Hill, but there are also several songs by Paul Simon, including the really excellent version of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” that you hear at the beginning of this episode, which if I'm being honest reminds me of Aretha Franklin's version. In this interview, we talk about both of those releases, as well as the larger issues they reflect. We talk about his compositional languages, the demands he places on the musicians he works with, his relationship to the jazz tradition, Wadada Leo Smith, Bill Dixon, Max Roach, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Cecil Taylor, and much, much more. It's one of my favorite interviews I've ever done, and I'm thrilled to share it with you.If you enjoy this podcast, please consider visiting patreon.com/burningambulance and becoming a subscriber. Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary GN 3:9-15, 20 PS 98:1, 2-3AB, 3CD-4 EPH 1:3-6, 11-12 LK 1:26-38
Memorial of Saint Teresa of Jesus, Virgin and Doctor of the Church Reading 1 EPH 1:1-10 Paul, an Apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the holy ones who are in Ephesus and faithful in Christ Jesus: grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, as he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him. In love he destined us for adoption to himself through Jesus Christ, in accord with the favor of his will, for the praise of the glory of his grace that he granted us in the beloved. In Christ we have redemption by his Blood, the forgiveness of transgressions, in accord with the riches of his grace that he lavished upon us. In all wisdom and insight, he has made known to us the mystery of his will in accord with his favor that he set forth in him as a plan for the fullness of times, to sum up all things in Christ, in heaven and on earth. Responsorial Psalm PS 98:1, 2-3AB, 3CD-4, 5-6 R. (2a) The Lord has made known his salvation. Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds; His right hand has won victory for him, his holy arm. R. The Lord has made known his salvation. The LORD has made his salvation known: in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice. He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. R. The Lord has made known his salvation. All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God. Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; break into song; sing praise. R. The Lord has made known his salvation. Sing praise to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and melodious song. With trumpets and the sound of the horn sing joyfully before the King, the LORD. R. The Lord has made known his salvation. Alleluia JN 14:16 R. Alleluia, alleluia. I am the way and the truth and the life, says the Lord; no one comes to the Father except through me. R. Alleluia, alleluia. Gospel LK 11:47-54 The Lord said: “Woe to you who build the memorials of the prophets whom your fathers killed. Consequently, you bear witness and give consent to the deeds of your ancestors, for they killed them and you do the building. Therefore, the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send to them prophets and Apostles; some of them they will kill and persecute' in order that this generation might be charged with the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who died between the altar and the temple building. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be charged with their blood! Woe to you, scholars of the law! You have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves did not enter and you stopped those trying to enter.” When Jesus left, the scribes and Pharisees began to act with hostility toward him and to interrogate him about many things, for they were plotting to catch him at something he might say. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sofia-fonseca7/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sofia-fonseca7/support
2 King 19 - Pray like Hezekiah Ps 48 - learn to name emotions Mt 7 - enter the narrow gate 2 KGS 19: 9B-11, 14-21, 31-35A, 36 Sennacherib, king of Assyria, sent envoys to Hezekiah with this message: “Thus shall you say to Hezekiah, king of Judah: ‘Do not let your God on whom you rely deceive you by saying that Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of Assyria. You have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all other countries: they doomed them! Will you, then, be saved?'” Hezekiah took the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; then he went up to the temple of the LORD, and spreading it out before him, he prayed in the LORD's presence: “O LORD, God of Israel, enthroned upon the cherubim! You alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made the heavens and the earth. Incline your ear, O LORD, and listen! Open your eyes, O LORD, and see! Hear the words of Sennacherib which he sent to taunt the living God. Truly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands, and cast their gods into the fire; they destroyed them because they were not gods, but the work of human hands, wood and stone. Therefore, O LORD, our God, save us from the power of this man, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you alone, O LORD, are God.” Then Isaiah, son of Amoz, sent this message to Hezekiah: “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, in answer to your prayer for help against Sennacherib, king of Assyria: I have listened! This is the word the LORD has spoken concerning him: “‘She despises you, laughs you to scorn, the virgin daughter Zion! Behind you she wags her head, daughter Jerusalem. “‘For out of Jerusalem shall come a remnant, and from Mount Zion, survivors. The zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.' “Therefore, thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not reach this city, nor shoot an arrow at it, nor come before it with a shield, nor cast up siege-works against it. He shall return by the same way he came, without entering the city, says the LORD. I will shield and save this city for my own sake, and for the sake of my servant David.'” That night the angel of the LORD went forth and struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. So Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, broke camp, and went back home to Nineveh. Psalm 48:2-3AB, 3CD-4, 10-11 R. God upholds his city for ever. Great is the LORD and wholly to be praised in the city of our God. His holy mountain, fairest of heights, is the joy of all the earth. R. Mount Zion, “the recesses of the North,” is the city of the great King. God is with her castles; renowned is he as a stronghold. R. O God, we ponder your mercy within your temple. As your name, O God, so also your praise reaches to the ends of the earth. Of justice your right hand is full. MT 7:6, 12-14 Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not give what is holy to dogs, or throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them underfoot, and turn and tear you to pieces. “Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the Law and the Prophets. “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sofia-fonseca7/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sofia-fonseca7/support

Dear DCIS Parents, With Christmas just around the corner, and at the end of another busy term, it seems the perfect time to reflect on what has been happening in the Primary School. We returned from our restful half term break straight into our busy UN Day preparations which saw the children busily researching the country assigned to their class, as well as making and collecting artefacts for their displays. The culmination of the week was UN Day itself with our annual parade and spectacular country displays down on the field. A big thank you to the teachers who supported to the children with their work, the parents who also helped to set up the displays and of course the Mrs Gray and Mrs Hyland who once again came up with the grand plan for the day! We have had several other celebrations this term. Our Deepavali cultural dress-up day saw 2RB and 2SL, and 3CD and 3AS present their assemblies to staff, children and parents, sharing some interesting facts and stories with us all. Thank you to the students and staff for their collaboration and hard work on this. The DCA treated us to a spooky affair for Halloween, the school looked truly terrifying thanks to the creative decorations and gruesome costumes around the place. Thank you to the DCA for frightening us even more than last year! This year, we raised awareness of Remembrance Day across the school too. You may have noticed the sea of poppies in the corridors; our first ever red and black day was a huge success and we were proud to hand over a financial contribution to the British Legion. Kindness Week, which linked with House Day, got us all thinking of ways to look after each other and was a thoroughly thought-provoking week for us all. Thank you also to Miss Sanderson and Miss Lindars for planning World Children’s Day for us. It was fantastic to see the children take a lead with their learning as they became the teachers and shared skills with their friends in other classes. Our trips continued this term with Year 1 taking part in drama workshops at Centre Stage and Year 2 visiting the National Gallery. There was great excitement as Year 5 headed off to Telunas for their annual residential, with Mr Odey and the Year 5 team. We were delighted to also send a group of children off to Ho Chi Min City for the South-East Asia NAE games led by Mr Carswell and Miss Hughes. As well as this, Mr Baines and Mr Northridge chaperoned a party of Y6 and Y7 students to the NAE STEAM festival in Bangkok. I know the children loved it – they were praised for their innovation, creativity and their impeccable behavior. Trips such as these take a great deal of preparation and planning – a special mention goes to Mr Odey for his work on the Telunas trip and to Mr Carswell for planning the NAE games and to Mr Baines for all the prep with the STEAM trip. A great number of staff have given up their time to support the children – a great big thank you to each and every one of them for their dedication to the school. We were delighted to invite our Year 6 parents into school for an Open Morning in which they found out about the transition to Secondary School. Our Year 6 children thoroughly enjoyed a day in Secondary, meeting the teachers and having a taste of secondary lessons and life as a secondary student. Christmas crept up on us and once again the DCA sprang into action with reindeer, elves and some very familiar faced gingerbread people popping up around the campus! The lower primary nativities were amazing and well-enjoyed by children, parents and some lucky grandparents too. Both nativities were absolute bonanzas and certainly got us all into the Christmas spirit! Wishing happy holidays to you all and for those who celebrate Christmas, I hope you enjoy the festivities.

Welcome to the new edition, hope all of you are enjoying the Easter break, especially our friends and family in the UK with some warm unseasonal weather there. Here in the Sunshine Coast, it’s very wet & warm. Quite a lineup we have that spans many aspects of electronic music, it certainly opens up a varied sound world. Journalist Neil Taylor in conversation - alongside Roy Carr & Adrian Thrills compiled the original NME cassette. C86 is a cassette compilation released by the British music magazine NME in 1986, featuring new bands licensed from British independent record labels of the time. As a term, C86 quickly evolved into shorthand for a guitar-based musical genre characterized by jangling guitars and melodic power pop song structures, although other musical styles were represented on the tape. In its time, it became a pejorative term for its associations with so-called "shambling" (a John Peel-coined description celebrating the self-conscious primitive approach of some of the music) and underachievement. The C86 scene is now recognized as a pivotal moment for independent music in the UK, as was recognized in the subtitle of the compilation's 2006 CD issue: CD86: 48 Tracks from the Birth of Indie Pop. 2014 saw the original compilation reissued in a 3CD expanded edition from Cherry Red Records; the 2014 box-set came with an 11,500-word book of sleevenotes by one of the tape's original curators, former NME journalist Neil Taylor. The C86 name was a play on the labelling and length of blank compact cassettes—commonly C60, C90 and C120—combined with 1986.
Records. Stephen SPAZ Schnee interviews British singer/songwriter and comedian Tony De Meur (AKA Ronnie Golden), the guitarist and vocalist from the legendary FABULOUS POODLES. They discuss the history of the band and the release of the new 3CD set MIRROR STARS: THE COMPLETE PYE RECORDINGS on Cherry Red Records.
Episode 17 of the Burning Ambulance podcast features an interview with bassist William Parker, whose latest album, the 3CD set Voices Fall from the Sky, is out now, and his wife Patricia Nicholson, who runs Arts For Art, the organization that has put on the Vision Festival every year since 1996 and has recently expanded to running additional concert series during the fall and winter. William Parker has been a crucial figure on the international avant-garde jazz scene since the 1970s. His first recorded appearance was in 1973, backing saxophonist Frank Lowe on the album Black Beings, and he’s made literally hundreds of records since then. He was the bassist in the David S. Ware Quartet for something like 20 years, and continued working with Ware until the saxophonist's death in 2012. He played with Cecil Taylor in the 1980s and 1990s, he was the bassist in Matthew Shipp’s trio for decades, and has played with almost everyone else you’ve ever heard of in this genre of music. As a leader, he’s done everything from solo bass albums to massive orchestral projects. Voices Fall from the Sky showcases his work with vocalists. Patricia Nicholson is also a hugely important figure to the New York avant-garde jazz scene, because she runs the annual Vision Festival, a massive, weeklong event that gathers amazing musicians from all across the spectrum, from players who’ve been around since the 1960s to people who’ve just made their debut in the last few years and are keeping the spirit of free music alive. She’s also a dancer and choreographer who performs at the festival every year, and she’s just made her debut as a spoken word performer on the album Hope Cries for Justice, a duo performance with Parker. In this interview, I’m talking to William about what he’s doing musically, and I’m talking to Patricia about her thoughts on dance, and what it takes to run the Vision Festival and all the other programs that the nonprofit Arts For Art, which she leads, put on every year. They’re an extremely ambitious organization working in a city and a cultural environment that offers equal parts apathy and hostility, but what they do is pretty amazing, so I hope you’ll find this conversation as interesting and inspiring as I did.
SPAZ is joined by Jeff Murphy (Shoes) to continue their discussion about the Present Tense album. Translator's Steve Barton stops by to discuss his lates 3CD solo album. The Blanket Fort Pow Wow panel discusses Power Pop. Music from Club Wow, Lannie Flowers and The Cherry Bluestorms. Last but not least, Spaz presents But Is It Power Pop? featuring the debut album by The Scooters!

This week's slice of “premier league culture punditry” (cheers, The Guardian) sees Supplement magazine editor Justin Quirk plus Joel Morris (top comedy writer and co-creator of the grown-up Ladybird books) join Andrew and Matt. They revisit the hubristic heights of Britpop with the 3CD reissue of ‘Be Here Now’, admit to records they love by bands they hate, and talk about some new tunes too. Click to listen. This week's Deadpod takes us back to Dijon France for the second set of the band's amazing performance which took place back on 9/18/74. I have however, taken some liberties with this presentation however, as I omitted the first two songs of set 2, Loose Lucy and Big River, because the vocals in these two are hopelessly lost and cannot be heard. In place of those, I decided to include the 3 songs done as a soundcheck for this show - something titled 'Jerry's Space', as well as Cumberland Blues and Brokedown Palace. I'm not always a fan of soundchecks but I do think you'll enjoy these. The remainder of the second set retains the audio clarity found in set 1, and while this set probably doesn't reach the musical heights of set 1 there is plenty here to enjoy. The Eyes->China Doll->He's Gone->Truckin' is as all those titles read, quite pleasing, if not mind-blowing. The most interesting jam of the set probably comes out of drums, when Phil leads them in a most interesting Caution jam. Johnny B. Goode to close the set is quite unusual and shows that the boys thought it had been a good days' work, I think. I've received several copies of the new Rhino/GD release: Wake Up To Find Out, the spectacular recording of the famous March 29th, 1990 show that featured the Dead's collaboration with jazz virtuoso Wynton Marsallis. I'd love to send out a copy of this 3CD set to anyone who could support the Deadpod with a $50 donation.
