Since this episode drops on the eve of Thanksgiving, y'all should gather ‘round the TV with pens & paper, draw along and listen to our discussion while Tom's recalls his experiences with John Cena, Jack Black on the set of Nacho Libre, his MMA match with the Korean Colossus, getting in the ring with the legendary Eric Butterbean, fighting former WWE wrestler & Australian actor Nathan Jones on the set of Ong Bak franchise film the Muay Thai Giant. Smiles & stories a plenty, plus heaps of Tom mentions including Tom Jardy, Tom Hanks, Tom Green, Tom Selleck, Tommy Lee Jones, Tom Cruise, Tom Brady & Tom Terrific Seaver It's our Thanksgiving episode & in the following intro discussion between myself & adrienne I give thanks to people who've helped keep The DOD45 show going, I'm thankful to you the audience & I'll take this opportunity to check out Vast Aire of Cannibal Ox's latest releases produced by Liquid Nails on Thanksgiving day. In episode 25 I talk to Vast Aire (Cannibal Ox) about Funky Four Plus One, an American hip hop group from The Bronx, New York, composed of Jazzy Jeff, Sharon Green, D.J. Breakout, Guy Williams, Keith Keith, The Voice of K.K. and Rodney Stone. The latter two members also performed together as the duo Double Trouble, notably in the film Wild Style. They were the first hip hop group to receive a record deal, as well as the first to perform live on national television. The group was also notable for being the first to have a woman MC, Sha-Rock.

If you've any interest in underground hip hop then this album is probably familiar to you. Widely hailed as one of the most important hip hop albums of all time, The Cold Vein by Cannibal Ox a real lightening in a bottle moment for Vast Aire and Vordul Mega. And now, having just celebrated its 20th anniversary, it seems a good a time as any to explore why. Having formed simply by dint of knowing each other through the New York battle rap scene and hanging out at El-P's flat/studio, Cannibal Ox came together somewhat at the behest of El-P. What transpired was two years of hard graft on their first (of only two) album together, created as they sat around thinking about rhymes and creating music with producer El-P. The skills of Vast and Vordul really shouldn't be underestimated. Having clearly honed their craft through years of spitting rhymes in ciphers on the streets, their lyrical dexterity and outrageous vocal partnership is clearly a highlight of this album. That's alongside El-P's production. This was the first thing he'd ever worked on outside of the work he'd done with his old group Company Flow, and it's a tour de force. Together with Can Ox, they paint a paranoid, dystopian, Philip K Dick inspired vision of Harlem, Brooklyn and New York City as a whole. Despite being hailed a classic, to date it has only sold just over 100,000 copies. Which is clearly fucking insane. That alone means it fulfils our criteria as an unsung classic, but like so many other artists we've covered on this podcast, Can Ox are real artist's artists. So we ask you, is it worth of a place in our discography? You decide, as ever.
In this episode of DOD45 Tai chats with Cas One, a rapper out of Evansville, Indiana on the Strange Famous Records label . They talk about life through the pandemic and laugh about his trauma during his school days, specifically brought on by the fear of #FreddyKrueger. We hear about his early influences, his disdain for #oysters and all things seafood, and his love for cooking on his outdoor griddle. They also get into shoe collecting, parenting, and have a thoughtful discussion about cancel culture. In this episode Tai draws a Rabbit & a Wolf based on Cas' song "a Rabbit Named Wolf" Sophie's Choice questions from this episode include: Bon Iver or Vast Aire? Silent Bob or Bob Ross? Chuck Taylors or Chuck Norris? Dali or Pardee? Oysters or Oingo Boingo? Cats or Dogs? Fred Flinstone or Fred Krueger? BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the CRYPTIC ONE interview session! We keep it NYC underground gritty this week (did you see our BREEZE BREWIN interview last week?) to chat with this Long Island born, Brooklyn-based producer, MC and co-founder of the ATOMS FAMILY. Cryp Uno kicked off a new instrumental series at the top of 2021, so we connected with him to talk about the origins of the series and how his self-imposed, “beat a day” challenge from a few years back laid the groundwork for it. We also get into a little history on why he left the game for an extended amount of time in the early aughts, why the incredible “Adult Rappers” film brought him back and the new perspective he’s gained in the process, as well as what his fellow ATOMS FAMILY crew such as ALASKA, WHICHCRAFT, MOLECULE & VAST AIRE are up to. There’s a bunch more inside, Vangardians - but you guessed it - gotta hit play to hear about it. So buckle up and tune in our good friends, it’s that #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #boombap #DJ #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #WORLDWIDE #RIPCOMBATJACK Recorded live February 7, 2021 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #soundcloud #youtube #spotifypodcast #googlepodcasts #stitcherradio #mixcloud #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard twitter/IG: @southernvangard @jondoeatl @cappuccinomeeks
In this Episode 41 of Out Da Box Talks, Host Cril talks in depth with NY Emcee "Pruven" on his inspirations to Emcee, collaborating with Vast Aire of the classic Cannibal Ox Hip Hop group, the inspiration for the artwork on his successful "Clandestine Rituals LP", working with producer Jak Progresso, specific lyrics and themes on the album as well as his newer "Asiatic African Arts LP". This interview is a quite in depth one and especially interesting if you are a fan of deciphering lyrics and appreciate intellectual talk. I'm particularly proud of this interview because I was able to explore the meaning behind some of the thought provoking themes on these 2 projects in which Pruven actually released this year. If you are already a fan of Pruven, I believe you'll certainly appreciate the interview. If this is your first time learning of him, hopefully you'll be inspired to explore his music with an open mind. Enjoy and Be Inspired!

There are cloth mesh barriers lining the steel girders underneath the railroad bridge in downtown Wichita. The bridge, nicknamed the ‘pigeon bridge’, was a home to a roost of the birds--a few weeks before the mesh went up, live traps were placed, pocketed between beams, and the birds’ numbers dwindled. That the pigeon has a pedigree more noble than its circumstances is a fact often overlooked in discussions that center on what to do about the bird. The species is amazingly versatile, and even as a metaphor, the pigeon is a capable ally. The pigeon is the bird of the working poor, as described by Vast Aire in this song by Cannibal Ox, called ‘Pigeon’: It’s difficult to avoid comparison between the eviction of the pigeons from the Douglas Street bridge, and the renovation of Naftzger Park just across the street, which has resulted in the eviction of the unhoused or working poor that visited the park. It’s unclear where the remaining pigeons will relocate now that their flock has been

This week's radio show breakdown (by minutes/hours): Introduction + Commentary: 0:00 - 1:19:18 DJ Fusion Mix (Extended): 1:19:18 - 3:23:40 Our commentary this week touched base on a bunch of random topics, including various reunions of the Hip-Hop and High School reunion ends, our complete disappointment with KRS-One's completely ridiculous defense of not questioning Hip-Hop's leaders in the midst of sexual abuse allegations against Afrika Bambaataa, exhaustion from the current U.S. Presidential Election cycle (on everything from the DNC Wikileaks e-mails, voters purely driven by fear yet wanting constructive change at the same time, slander against 3rd parties, etc.), the ingrained ignorance of being "good" enough to not be killed by law enforcement if you're a Person of Color, mini-movie review talk (on "Ghostbusters", "Batman: The Killing Joke", etc.) and some other stuff here and there. There is no brand new Black Agenda Report news mini-segment on this week's episode due to our extended commentary. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Peace! These are the tracks that left the biggest impressions on us last year. Anything we started working in December was ineligible for 2011 but could be one of the Dopest Joints! of 2012, we'll have to wait and see. When we put together mixes like this it reminds us that Hip Hop is alive and well. If anyone ever tries to tell you Hip Hop's dead tell 'em... "Hip Hop didn't die... you got lazy!" Thanks to all the artists and promoters involved in creating and spreading the music we play for keeping us supplied with good vibes. We've connected with many of the artists on this list but there's no politics involved in their tracks being in the mix. We reach out to artists who we're feeling and there's no shortage of them. His new single I Made A Difference (Haiti Benefit Song) features a who's who of artists all of which will see the proceeds of their contribution's go to the Sean Penn's Organization for Haiti. Interestingly enough, it wasn't however in every artist Cormega reached out to to make the same difference. In this engaging and eye-opening two part interview, Mega gives us an update on the current state of Haiti and talks about creating I Made A Difference, explaining why Nature choosing to not contribute was more justifiable than other rappers reasons not to. We are also told that Immortal Technique recorded a verse but didn't make the final cut due to timing. Furthermore, he addresses the forthcoming x2 CD project Raw Forever, explaining its concept and how The Best Of disc's track selection was chosen, being critical of his work (Dead Man Walking), his favourite track(s) and his band The Revelations. I have no clue what each episode will sound like, but they’ll each be compilations of new music I’m currently digging and older stuff that isn’t heard very often or stuff not many people may know about.
