“It wasn't nearly as traumatic for me as I was expecting it to be. I was a little concerned about how I would transition from having to get up and having that routine to creating a new one.” - Sharon Welcome to another edition of Real Retirement Stories - a series of Take Back Retirement. Our hosts Stephanie McCullough and Kevin Gaines chat with Sharon Johnson. After an illustrious 22-year career as an executive assistant at ABC Television, Sharon didn't slow down—instead, she switched gears and found a new calling co-hosting the 80s TV Ladies Podcast. Join in to hear her incredible journey from the bustling world of television execs to the equally dynamic realm of podcasting, where she revisits iconic 80s TV shows with a modern feminist perspective. Sharon's story is a testament to the transformative power of embracing change and finding joy in unexpected places. Sharon originally envisioned her retirement as a time for travel and catching up on missed TV series, but life had other plans. Through her podcast, she rekindled her love for classic 80s shows like "A Different World," gaining fresh insights into the progressive roles women played both in front and behind the camera. Sharon also shares her serendipitous entry into the television industry in the mid-90s, working for an independent production company, and how those experiences shaped her understanding of TV production and storytelling. Whether you're intrigued by the behind-the-scenes workings of TV production or the fresh perspectives that come with retirement, Sharon's story is a celebration of staying active, engaged, and ever-curious. Don't miss this inspiring episode filled with nostalgia, wisdom, and the boundless opportunities that come with retirement. Going old school, Slackers! It's been a while since I did a single year chart recap. This week I chose 1987 - and it is an interesting time for music, and when sitcoms ruled the Nielsen ratings. The Billboard Hot 100 for 1987 was a big year for a number of artists that we now think of as legendary. Bon Jovi & Whitesnake both had breakout hits after years of plugging away. George Michael had his first taste of solo success after the demise of WHAM!. And the youngest Jackson, Janet, became an absolute superstar in her own right. But the TOP song for 1987 was a goofy, gimmicky song, that was still amazingly catchy!Plus, artists like Huey Lewis & the News, Fleetwood Mac, and the usual chart toppers - Michael Jackson, Prince, and Madonna - all had major hits. And we have to show a little love for Crowded House!Over on the TV charts, unsurprisingly, the NBC Thursday night sitcom block ruled the top 10 - The Cosby Show, A Different World, Cheers, and Night Court was quite the formidable lineup! Tell me, what do you remember about 1987?

Today I sit down with star of the newly released “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” Tamara Taylor. As a shy kid, Tamara started out in modeling school. It was there where she discovered how she came alive on a runway performing in front of an audience. With dreams of pursuing acting, Tamara credits her mother with helping her to set her creative priorities on track when she asked, “Do you want to do this because you want to be famous, or do you want to do this because you like it?” After moving to Los Angeles with her best friend to pursue their entertainment industry dreams, Tamara studied with acting coaches Margie Haber and Howard Fine and describes her experience of first going out for commercial auditions. After landing a series of commercials as a spokesperson for AT&T, Tamara was able to launch her commercial success into securing theatrical agent representation. Since then, Tamara has earned a list of credits that just keeps growing including her well-known role as Dr. Camille Saroyan on FOX's “Bones,” ABC's “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Netflix's “Altered Carbon” and “October Faction,” FOX's “Party of Five”, ABC's “Lost”, Tyler Perry's “Diary of a Mad Black Woman,” and many more. Today, Tamara candidly and openly discusses both the challenges and excitements that await actors at every new level in their career, from new actor to series regular. She shares her journey towards developing and embracing her own self-confidence, and shares how that confidence has allowed her to recover gracefully from on-set blunders, to fully show up in auditions even when feeling nervous or unprepared, and most of all, to always listen to her gut. These are the unforgettable stories that landed Tamara Taylor right here. People close to me know that I am absolutely obsessed with 90s nostalgia. From the music, tv shows and especially movies. In my personal opinion, it is the best era in history PERIOD. I crossed paths with a brand that celebrates everything I love about that time period. Temple and Kardy are a brother/sister duo that are making an impact in a major way. Did I neglect to mention that they don't just make classic tshirts? Outside of unisex tees, they also offer skirts and face masks. So what prompted these two to venture out on this unique journey, how do they decide on designs and what are they up to next? On this week’s episode, hosts Tymika Lawrence and Ezra Baker drink a cup of Idido Natural from Black & White Coffee Roasters in Chapel Hill, NC. This show is dedicated to the concept of the Very Special Episode, “one my favorite TV vehicles,” says Lawrence. “It’s a way for writers to bring a serious, heavy topic into homes where maybe people aren’t dealing with it…they humanize it by connecting with characters you know and love.” Lawrence and Baker dive deep into a classic two-part episode of A Different World, "Honeymoon in LA". This particular episode—the premier of Season Six, aired on September 24th, 1992—starts after the “wedding episode” of ADW (“a classic moment of Black television” says Baker) and takes place during the 1992 Rodney King riots in Los Angeles.

We take it back talking about our favorite shows growing up and we talk about how the media has shaped our image today.
"We're talking good and bad hair, whether you're dark or you're fair. Go on and swear see if I care good and bad hair." - Spike Lee's School Daze On this week's episode NatoyaEbony (@natoyaebony) and Adrianna Cool (@mscool_nthecity) talk about colorism and how it's shaped their views of the world and their personality. You also don't want to miss them taking a trip down memory lane to their outfits on their first day of high school. Those memories are filled with F.U.B.U, Sketchers, Allen Iverson's sneakers, and Air Force Ones.
