The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) recently released the results of its Prospective Students Survey 2022, a tool used to provide graduate business schools with critical insights into the decision-making processes of people currently considering applying to a graduate management education (GME) program. Many of the findings are valuable for applicants as well, as they shed light on current trends in the business school industry and paint a picture of the education landscape students will be navigating over the next few years. To help unpack some of the report's most interesting results, we've invited MBA admissions consultant Barbara Coward, founder of MBA 360 Admissions, to share her perspective. We discuss:The current state of graduate business education in a post-pandemic world; Why 4 out of 5 respondents still see significant value in a business degree;Acknowledged barriers to going back to school; The relative desire for 1-year vs. 2-year MBA programs, and whether U.S. business schools are ever likely to move to a 1-year model; The role of hybrid learning in the future given respondents' strong preferences for in-person learning;Where test-optional policies stand;Triggers for students deciding to go back to school; And more! This year's report is chock-full of interesting data about current trends in the GME space. With Barbara's help, we do a thorough job of distilling some of the most salient insights for you. But if you also want to hear the GMAC's perspective on their own survey, you can attend their webinar on May 18, 2022 where they will further discuss key findings.RESOURCES / LINKSSummary Report: GMAC Prospective Students Survey 2022GMAC Prospective Students Survey 2022 - Deans SummaryGMAC Prospective Students Survey 2022 - InfographicReport: Post-GMA Career AspirationsContact Barbara Coward, founder of MBA 360 AdmissionsContact Brett Ethridge, founder of Dominate Test PrepRegister for complete prep courses for the GMAT, GRE, or Executive AssessmentSIMILAR EPISODESIf you enjoyed this episode, we encourage you to check out these other similar episodes of The Dominate Test Prep Podcast:Episode 23: Should You Hire an Admissions Consultant?Episode 28: The Value of an MBAA DOSE OF MOTIVATION“We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. Cast: Dr. Tara Egan, host Anna, teen co-host Michelle McAnaney, Educational Consultant, owner of "The College Spy" Tara and Anna are super excited to welcome back Michelle McAnaney. Michelle is the owner of the The College Spy, a college admission consultation service designed to help students prepare, apply, and choose their "best-fit" college, and she has returned to talk to us on season two to discuss "Applying to College During COVID - Tips for Juniors and Seniors." With COVID in our lives many things have been different. One of which, is how kids are now applying for college. Luckily, we have Michelle to help all of us learn about these changes, as well as, what parents and students should be considering and focusing on right now. This looks slightly different for juniors than seniors, but Michelle has us covered and  shares tons of great tips and information for both. The first question that most people ask is how do you get started looking for, applying to and choosing colleges. Tune in and hear Michelle share with Tara and Anna WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT STARTING THE COLLEGE SEARCH PROCESS and learn more about: For years the key to choosing which college was mainly based on school visits, but now they do not have a chance to do that with COVID. So what do you do? Self guided tours are an option at some schools, but they are very limited. For those that are offering in person visits, when is the best time to go and what areas are best to visit and observe? Are colleges looking at standardized test scores? Is it recommended for students to take them?    With all the unknowns, you should diversify your college list and apply to more schools than in the past because you do not know how the schools are going to make decisions with the many factors of COVID. How many schools should students be applying for? With a  COVID slide ( when a naturally A or B student, and now with COVID, has gone to B or C student) Will colleges will take into account this past year and being more flexible? How can you stay competitive with other applicants in these times? Your application tells your story and the pandemic is part of it. How do you use this to your benefit and spend your time? Recommendation for Juniors to focus time and energy on to make sure their application is competitive: Courses for the Fall, two things more important than others: Grades and Academic Rigor - (what courses did you take, how hard were they and how did you do?)1) Increase rigor taking an additional AP course, foreign language keep academics challenging. 2) Find something to do for extra curricular activities 3) Start researching now and not wait until fall of senior yearShould you take more rigorous classes or more diversified? Note: it's based on each students scenario. Is class rank important in applying to college and being competitive? For lots of free resources and how Michelle can help make  the entire process less stressful and more fun, visit her website  https://thecollegespy.com/.To learn more about Dr. Tara Egan's child & adolescent therapy services, visit HERE.To join our private FB group for parents of high schoolers and soon-to-be high schoolers, visit HERE.To join us on Instagram, visit HERE. This episode was edited by Laura Bauder from PodcastHERS.

Interview with Rachel Slutsky, Accepted admissions consultant [Show summary] Want to know what makes for stupendous statements of purpose or impressive MBA essays? Our guest, and recent addition to Accepted’s team of consultants, is an expert at both. But, for some of you her main claim to fame may be her status as a Harvard PhD Student. In this podcast she discusses how she earned admission to Harvard for a fully funded PhD and what makes for great graduate school application essays. She has also worked with applicants coming from the military and discusses some of the challenges unique to that applicant cohort as well as how to overcome them. Find out how to apply to grad school successfully from an admissions consultant and Harvard PhD student [Show notes] Our guest today, Rachel Slutsky, earned her bachelors in English Lit and Jewish Studies from Yeshiva University, her masters in Judaic Studies from the University of Chicago, and is currently pursuing her PhD in Religion and Religious Studies at Harvard University. Since her days as an undergrad she has worked as a writing tutor and teacher, application essay editor and admissions consultant, and she has also edited for the prestigious Harvard Theological Review. Needless to say she knows a ton about the writing required of successful graduate school applicants and students, and she’s going to share that insight with us today. Can you tell us about your background? Where you grew up? How did you come to pursue the academic path? [2:12] As you mentioned, I am getting a PhD in religion. I am from the Boston area and had religious studies courses in high school, and my teacher really inspired me. I saw myself being her, and thought I would be a high school religious studies teacher, but when I was in my first year of college, I took a class with a professor who reminded me a lot of my high school teacher. I wrote to my high school teacher and wondered if this professor was at college when she was there, and in fact this professor had made HER want to teach. I switched my goal to teaching similar content but on a graduate school level. You are in a fully funded PhD program in Religion and Religious Studies at Harvard. Getting into a Harvard PhD program is something many people would give their eye teeth for. How did you do it? [3:57] I have to admit there is always some piece of luck to it. There is also persistence and actual skill. For persistence I applied to be a Harvard undergrad and did not get accepted. I was not too distraught about it at the time - I really felt like I could succeed there and could go there for another degree. They allow you to submit an application of any sort three times, so I decided for my masters not to apply to Harvard since I knew I wanted a PhD afterwards and wanted to try again then. The real skill thing was being able to honestly evaluate myself. Even though I look back now and think I would have been okay as a Harvard undergrad, I did not present an application that showed that at the time. I wasn’t thinking about the application in a complex way. It was only by the end of college that I felt I understood what it means to apply well somewhere. In terms of skill, for the application specifically it involves tailoring. It cannot be a common application. You have to figure out a way to stand out. That is really important. It is a performance, and while not exaggerating, you have to put on your best outfit, your best face, and it is the time to show off. With applications every part needs to complement every other part. The cover letter serves a different purpose than the resume. Redundancy is not what the adcom is looking for. You have received over $50,000 in funding in addition to being in a fully funded PhD program. How did you manage that? [9:45] I do have to credit some of it to luck. My master’s degree was fully funded which I did not expect. When I was accepted to University of Chicago I got two emails – one was the acce...

Hospitality to Kellogg MBA [Show Summary] Libby Angst is a 2018 graduate of the Kellogg MBA program and Accepted’s newest MBA admissions consultant. Libby shares her experience in the hospitality industry, her motivations behind her job changes, her decision to pursue an MBA and what she thought was most valuable in the Kellogg MBA program. Along the way she also shares insights into the unique qualities of the hospitality industry and in the Kellogg MBA program as well as the lessons she learned as Co-Chair of The Kellogg Student MBA Admissions Committee. Interview with Libby Angst [Show Notes] Can you tell us a little about your background and where you grew up? [1:56] I grew up in a suburb 45 minutes north of Chicago. I went to a high school with over 1,000 students in my graduating class, so with a class so big it was important for me to find a niche. Mine was the tennis team, volunteering with organizations around Chicago, and my big activity was policy debating on a national circuit with my high school varsity debate team before I ended up going to Northwestern for undergrad. You worked in the hospitality industry before joining Kellogg. How did you choose that industry to launch your professional career? [2:50] During high school and college I always had odd jobs in the service industry. One of them was working at a high-end boutique folding and selling clothes, and I also worked as a tennis instructor for a nearby country club, so both required me to deliver a high level of service to discerning customers in my teenage, formative years. Additionally, in college I developed a passion for traveling after studying abroad in Madrid my junior year, my first trip to Europe. After I got back I really wanted to learn the ins and outs of the hotel industry from a highly regarded luxury chain, so luckily Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts had a worldwide sales office that hired me as an intern for two summers. Why did you choose to work for TravelClick, and then why did you decide to earn an MBA? [4:05] I had been working for Four Seasons in their property in Palo Alto, and I began using a lot of the TravelClick products to help me achieve my sales goals. A lot of them were benchmarking our performance against competitive sets - I used the tools to figure out what times of year I could charge higher rates for my corporate and group clients in order to reach my goals. After a number of years using their products I had developed a relationship with our TravelClick representative, and began exploring opportunities at that company in a sales role where I could work with large hotel chains to share how TravelClick products could add value to their companies. While I was at TravelClick working with the large hotel brands I began working a lot with asset managers. I realized the real estate side of the hotel business was not something I knew too much about, but was probably one of the most important things to know to progress my career in the travel industry. So after working at TravelClick for two years I decided I needed to learn more about business. With a liberal arts background I didn’t have the skillset, particularly in finance, that I needed so I decided to earn an MBA in order to transition into the business side to progress my career. What do you think are some of the more distinctive elements of the hospitality and travel industries? [6:30] The industry feels immediate impacts from the economy. Hotels are signing essentially 24 hour lease agreements and are extremely sensitive to things going on in the economy. The wellbeing of a hotel could shift quite literally from month to month based on how the economy is doing. So one of the things hotels really need to do is have a very firm grasp on what is happening on the micro level with the economy and then also be tuned into what is happening in the international travel industry as well, since a lot of travelers are coming from outside of the United States,
