This week Kayley Kennedy speaks to well known stockman Ali Jackson. Not just bringing out cattle for one of the top British Blue breeders in UK, he is an experienced shepherd successfully running a number of breeds. As with our podcast last week, Ali is another Scot who has scooped the interbreed group of threes at the Royal Welsh show, along with hauls of silverware from the Highland and a recent run at the Yorkshire. Now one of the top breeders of Spotted Dutch Texels, we hear about the merits of that breed which is rapidly gaining traction in UK.

Ali Jackson one of the greatest drummers in the world joins to take our audience on a history of smooth. He is an award-winning musician, composer, arranger, educator, and percussionist who spent several years touring and recording with a diverse group of musicians before accepting the role of Drum Chair of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra which was founded by Wynton Marsalis. Ali has performed and recorded with a multitude of artists including Wynton Marsalis, Jon Batiste, Willie Nelson, Tony Bennett, Faith Hill, Bobby McFerrin, Norah Jones, Eric Clapton, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Aretha Franklin, George Benson, Harry Connick, Jr., Joshua Redman, Diana Krall, and Gerald Albright. As a bandleader, Ali has recorded five albums, including Amalgamations, Wheelz Keep Rollin’, Big Brown Getdown and the Yes! Trio album. I had the honor of interviewing attorney Kamil Ali-Jackson, who co-founded Aclaris Therapeutics in 2012 and serves as chief legal officer, chief compliance officer and corporate secretary. Kamil also is an active board member of PDS Biotechnology and has earned degrees from Princeton and Harvard. Tonight and throughout the month of November The Jazz Show throws the spotlight on obscure, underrated and under recorded trumpeters. All are master musicians but for a variety of reasons, none got the recognition they so richly deserved. In the case of tonight's the wonderful Wilbur Harden , it was a case of his career being curtailed by ill heath both mental and physical. He had recorded with the great Yusef Lateef and John Coltrane and was held in very high esteem. He signed with Savoy Records in 1958 and recorded four wonderful dates, two of which make up tonight's Jazz Feature. Wilbur appears on flugelhorn, his preferred horn with the mighty John Coltrane, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianists Howard Williams and Tommy Flanagan (splitting the chores), bassist Alvin (aka Ali) Jackson and drum great Arthur Taylor. These two recordings were done in June of 1958 and first issued separately on two LPs. We hear them both tonight. Wilbur Harden wrote four of the seven tunes and Curtis Fuller wrote two and the ballad feature is the old standard "Once in a While". Wilbur made his final record in 1960 and sadly died in obscurity in 1969 at age 44. Hear him at his best tonight!

Coming from a musical family, he was instructed by his grandfather, Lloyd Arntzen (also a clarinetist), who taught him traditional New Orleans jazz from the age of seven. He obtained a degree in saxophone performance from Capilano University in Vancouver and performed extensively with such groups as the October Trio and Amanda Tosoff Quartet, as well as with many of Canada's most prominent musicians, such as Brad Turner, Ron Samworth and Dave Robbins. Since moving to NYC in January 2014, Evan has performed at some of New York's most prestigious venues such as Town Hall, Symphony Space, Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, Birdland, Smalls, and the Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Evan's travels have taken him all over the United States, Canada and he has been a guest soloist at festivals in the Netherlands, France, Hungary and Japan. His long-time musical partnership with fellow west coast Canadian trumpeter/singer Bria Skonberg (3-time Downbeat rising star) continues to this day. As a member of Bria's Quintet, Evan performed at the 2015 Newport Jazz Festival, the 2016 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and recorded on her most recent album featuring Ali Jackson, Stefon Harris, Reginald Veal and Aaron Diehl, released in September 2016 on Sony Records. In New York, Evan takes part in a vast and vibrant traditional jazz scene, performing regularly with Vince Giordano's Nighthawks (Boardwalk Empire, the Aviator), Terry Waldo's Gotham City Band, and Jon-Erik Kellso's Earregulars. In 2015 he recorded with the Nighthawks on the soundtrack to the HBO film “Bessie”, a biographical film about Bessie Smith. He is also the co-leader of the Scrub Board Serenaders, a quartet of singing, playing young musicians, possessing a unique interplay. Support this podcast

In our third installation of "Offstage and Unbound," The Music Center's President and CEO Rachel Moore chats with Hope Boykin of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. She joined the company in 2000 and has choreographed three stunning works for the company. They include Acceptance In Surrender in 2005, in collaboration with fellow Ailey company members Abdur-Rahim Jackson and Matthew Rushing; Go in Grace in 2008 with music by the award-winning singing group Sweet Honey in the Rock; and her most recent piece, r-Evolution, Dream, which was inspired by the speeches and sermons of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., with original music by Ali Jackson. Hope is a three-time recipient of the American Dance Festival’s Young Tuition Scholarship and received a New York Dance and Performance (Bessie) Award.

The East St. Louis High School Jazz Band and the band’s director, Delano Redmond participated in an intensive workshop with musicians Marcus Printup, trumpet, Ali Jackson, drums, Walter Blanding Jr., saxophones, and Wynton Marsalis. Then the East St. Louis High students performed side by side with Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra for an never to be forgotten experience.
