Andrew Rothschild is back with an interesting case of severe pain and hyperalgesia around the scapula area in a CrossFit Athlete. This is the second time in 1 year after good resolution the year prior. Both times there was no clear cut mechanism of injury. Then randomly on social media, Andrew saw two posts regarding a differential diagnosis of severe pain in this area in overhead athletes. Treatment ended up being the same, but it makes for interesting discussion on how and why these things may happen. Ever seen a case of nerve entrapment like this? Wearing super-cushy, elevated, and tight shoes on your feet is like wearing winter gloves or mittens on your hands, and then trying to type with them. Your foot health and function can directly relate to the health of your knees, hips, and back, especially if you're an active individual, but also for anyone who spends any time on their feet on a daily basis. Dr. Andrew Rothschild, PT and Dr. Andrew Mann, PT discuss footwear and what people need to know when choosing basic every day shoes. In a nutshell, shoes should look like your feet, wide in front and narrow in the heel, and be comfortable with the least amount of support necessary. When Jason and I last recorded an episode, the COVID-19 pandemic was still the biggest topic affecting society. However, a few weeks ago, things changed. The police murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis sparked a revival of the #BlackLivesMatter movement and an awareness of racial disparity and oppression throughout our country. As healthcare providers, parents, friends, colleagues, neighbors, and community activists, how can we have that difficult conversation with someone who may not share our same opinion or world view and still maintain the necessary relationships that are required? What Stoic principles can we use to help guide our thoughts and actions? This is a longer episode than usual, but I hope you find it as valuable as we did. Issues of race and social justice are challenging issues that affect every fabric of our society and culture. Hopefully, the conversation and movement is only just beginning. Following graduation from Physical Therapy school, Jerry practiced in a variety of settings, inpatient and outpatient, from small independent clinics to large hospitals and from the very beginning, Jerry questioned why there wasn't an emphasis placed on treating patients as individuals, with unique concerns and objectives and why more effort wasn't being made to develop true relationships with patients. He is the Chief Relationship Officer for his physical therapy practices with San Francisco Sport & Spine Physical Therapy, hosts the podcast Healthcare DispuPTion with Dr. Andrew Rothschild. He is a nationally recognized expert and sought after conference speaker as well as a clinical instructor who travels across the United States teaching the next generation of practice owners. Today on Pain Reframed, Dr. Andrew Rothschild joins Dr. Jeff Moore and Dr. Tim Flynn. Andrew shares his story with extensive severe and chronic pain as a patient and also, now, from a PT perspective. Andrew’s experience with pain as a patient was not, unfortunately, the best experience and, as a result, caused him to train to become a PT to do things differently and, as he puts it, better. It’s a powerful story and contains numerous nuggets along the way worth heeding and applying to our lives as PT’s and/or patients suffering from chronic pain.
