Hi! Trapper Jack here. Spoiler alert. In this podcast episode, we have three seminarians telling the exact same story of being young, strong swimmers, plunging into the ocean and being carried out to a watery grave by a strong riptide. If this sounds a bit familiar, the Holy Spirit is going to build on this recent topic. In all three drowning seminarian stories, frantic prayers were prayed, and divinely sent angels changed the course of history. God intervened in order that these three men in formation became Fr. John, Fr. Michael, and Fr. Paul. All will swear that they were saved by God to serve Christ. But that is not the end of the story. This is also a story where Jesus teaches us a lesson about feeling underwater in life. I've added a great message from Fr. John Ricardo about being saved from going under in all possible ways. The Story of a CGS Family with Kelly and Maureen Stone and Elizabeth Burghart “We love because he first loved us.” – 1 John 4:19 Deacon Kelly and Maureen Stone with their daughter Elizabeth Burghart join us on the podcast to share their story of how they ALL got involved in the work of The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and how it has changed their lives and spiritual work. Kelly and Maureen Stone live near Indianola and attend St. John the Apostle in Norwalk, Iowa . They married in 1979 and have five grown married children and 14 grandchildren. Kelly is an engineer and Maureen is an educator. Maureen began a Level I Formation Course in 2002 and continued on to Level II and Level III. She has served as a catechist in local parishes for 20 years. In 2018 she had the great pleasure of attending a national seminal Infant/Toddler formation in Scottsdale, AZ. Through the years she has served on the local Shepherd Staff board which hosts Formation Courses and promotes Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in Iowa. She worked as an assistant at School of Mary ~ Montessori in the Des Moines Metro from 2014-2018. Maureen's husband, Deacon Kelly, and four daughters, Meggan Young, Elizabeth Burghart, Mary Wolf and Ginny Rossi are Catechesis of Good Shepherd catechists. She helped coordinate the growth of CGS for a local parish for 10 years. She is currently a volunteer coordinator for CGS at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Norwalk, Iowa Deacon Kelly began a Level I Formation Course in 2013 after assisting in the atrium. He had spent many years prior to his Formation listening to other family members and friends speak of the joy and grace in the work! In 2014, as his Level I course was coming to an end, he heard a call to become a deacon. He was ordained to the permanent diaconate in August 2018. He is currently assigned to St. John the Apostle church in Norwalk, Iowa. He assists in CGS as a substitute catechist and material maker. He also leads baptism classes and relies heavily on "Baptism is a Beginning", edited by Rebekah Rojcewicz. Elizabeth Burghart lives in Atchison, KS with her husband, and three children. She is a Level III catechist at St. Benedict Parish and a Primary Assistant for Holy Family Montessori Co-op. From Elizabeth Burghart – “When I was thirteen years old, I saw the Eucharistic Presence of the Good Shepherd presentation. I was deeply drawn to the work and I was eager to receive training. I was permitted to join an upcoming Level I Formation Course. At the time, I did not know the remarkable impact Catechesis of the Good Shepherd would have on my life. My early years as a catechist were enriched by meeting Sofia Cavalletti and Silvana Montanaro in Rome. I soon went on to receive training in Levels II and III as well as Primary Montessori training. I have had the joy of serving as a Catechist of the Good Shepherd since 2008. Throughout my work, whether in parishes, Montessori schools or my own home, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd has been a strong foundation and inspiration. CGS is a “golden thread” in my life. Indeed, it is one of the greatest gifts I have received.” A Call for Nominations to the CGSUSA Board of Trustees All nominations, nominee biographies and answers to questions must be received by Saturday, October 1, 2022. A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - Cardinal Vincent Nichols of Westminster, England, offered prayers on Thursday for Queen Elizabeth II, who is reportedly under medical supervision at Balmoral Castle in Scotland with multiple family members traveling to be by her side. The 96-year-old British monarch has been on a summer break at her Scottish home since July, the BBC reported. As of Thursday afternoon, all the queen's children were traveling to or had arrived at the castle. Since her reign began in 1952, Queen Elizabeth has met five popes. In 2010, she welcomed then Pope Benedict XVI to the UK, the first state visit of a pope to the country. Saint John Paul II had visited the UK and met with the queen in 1982, but his was a pastoral rather than a state visit. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/252239/cardinal-nichols-prays-for-queen-elizabeth-ii-amid-concerns-about-her-health A statue of Our Lady of Fatima, stolen from Catholic church in New Jersey last week has been recovered and an arrest has been made. The statue was stolen from Saint Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Gibbsboro, New Jersey on August 30. Monsignor Louis Marucci, the pastor, said that he was praying that it would be returned before today, The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the day on which the parish always holds a litany of prayers from sunup to sundown in honor of Mary. A 64 year old suspect has been charged with the theft. Marucci praised the police for their efforts in finding the suspect. He also said that the parish's security system and cameras were instrumental in capturing footage of the suspect in that act. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/252233/our-lady-of-fatima-statue-stolen-from-catholic-church-in-nj-found-arrest-made Today, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, nine months after the December 8 celebration of her Immaculate Conception as the child of Saints Joachim and Anne. The circumstances of the Virgin Mary's infancy and early life are not directly recorded in the Bible, but other documents and traditions describing the circumstances of her birth are cited by some of the earliest Christian writers from the first centuries of the Church. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/the-birth-of-the-blessed-virgin-mary-357
“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.” Matthew 25:35 Kathleen Tong joins us on the podcast today to tell us about how she has been using the method of The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in her work in Prison Ministry and the response she has witnessed in our brothers and sisters that she serves there. Kathleen began her work in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in 2003. She serves as a catechist at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Boerne, Texas and most recently was in the Level III atrium. She is a member of the 2014 CGS-MAPS Cohort at the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St. Louis. She currently serves as a Certified Volunteer Chaplain's Assistant (CVCA) for the Texas Department of Corrections Connally Unit in Kenedy, Texas. Kathleen was invited to introduce Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to offenders of the Catholic community who facilitate RCIA in 2019. Additionally, she serves as Secretary and director on the board of Kolbe Prison Ministries and is a member of the San Antonio Kolbe CORE team. She is also the mom of a 22 year old daughter, Hannah Rose, who grew up a child of the atrium. In The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, we have 32 Points of Reflection that are intended to represent the principal aspects of the catechesis as they have developed after more than sixty five years of work with children of different countries, cultures and socio-economic backgrounds. Kathleen's work of using CGS in her prison ministry work is a great example of characteristic #26 in action: The primary commitment of the catechist is working with the children in the atrium; however, this commitment also leads the catechist to be open to the needs of the catechesis in general and making him/her responsive to other forms of service which can be necessary. There is a Summer Catechist Study Day coming up on August 16th from 7-9pm ET. This is for CGSUSA members. This is an opportunity to hear some thoughts on Sustaining the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in a Parish Setting from CGSUSA national director, Mary Mirrione who also has 19 years serving as director of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd in a large parish in Gilbert, AZ. A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - Four Catholic churches in Wisconsin's Chippewa county were vandalized in the past week with what appear to be pro-abortion messages. The churches are Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Notre Dame Catholic Church, and St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Chippewa Falls, and St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Tilden. The perpetrator can be seen wearing a hood, a mask, and dark clothing, caught on camera during the act of the vandalism. Police said that a person of interest has been identified in the vandalism of the Chippewa Falls churches. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/251736/four-catholic-churches-in-wisconsin-vandalized-with-pro-abortion-graffiti Human rights advocates have raised concerns about heightened restrictions on Christians in China after Pope Francis expressed hope that the Holy See's agreement with Beijing will be renewed in the fall. Nearly four years after the Holy See entered into an agreement with Chinese authorities in September 2018, Pope Francis told Reuters in an interview published this week that he believes “the agreement is moving well.” Human rights advocates disagree. Nina Shea, the director of the Center for Religious Freedom at the Hudson Institute, told CNA on July 6 that since the agreement was signed in 2018 “the CCP has all but destroyed the Catholic underground church and tightened conformity with its teachings over the patriotic church.” Catholic priests who minister in China legally are required to sign a paper in which they promise to support the Communist Party in China. They are only allowed to minister in recognized places of worship in which minors under the age of 18 are not allowed to enter. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/251728/human-rights-advocates-respond-after-pope-francis-says-vatican-china-deal-moving-well Today, the Church celebrates Pope Saint Benedict XI. Known for his loyalty and peacemaking abilities, he was Pope for only one year, dying on July 7, 1304. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-pope-benedict-xi-294 The Church also celebrates Blessed Maria Romero Meneses. As a Salesian Sister in Costa Rica, her ministry became focused on social development, helping the rich to see how they could help the poor. She set up recreational centers in 1945, food distribution centers in 1953, a school for poor girls in 1961, and a clinic in 1966. In 1973, she organized the construction of seven homes, which became the foundation of the village of Centro San Jose, a community where poor families could have decent homes. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/blessed-maria-romero-meneses-536

It's a place where cultures can unite through art, language, music and a little coffee. Welcome to El Centro Community Center in the heart of Naco, Arizona, just steps away from the Mexican border and Naco, Sonora. Its founders, Lori Keyne and Seth Polley, told us the mission is to strengthen the community by celebrating both cultures. At the same time they'll be teaching youth different skills through art, music, language and entrepreneurship. El Centro — which means "the center" in Spanish — is also a place where people from both sides of the border can hang out and discuss whatever is on their minds, especially after the COVID-infused months kept people apart. Polley is a history teacher at Bisbee High, and a former reverend of St. John's Episcopal Church in Bisbee. And Keyne is a music teacher at Cochise College and the founder of Concerts Without Borders and the Bi-National Arts Institute. They said It'll be a place to connect. On Friday afternoon that "place" was starting to come alive as Polley and Keyne opened the doors of El Centro on Towner Avenue. Keyne said her dream was to secure a space where youth from both sides of the border could gather, but also learn a few things while doing so, such as language, art, music and job skills. The community center, painted in bright colors and located next to GSS Racing on Towner, includes a front room with several comfortable chairs and a counter area where guests can get a cup of espresso. Several back rooms will be set up for art, language and music lessons. A spacious side yard includes a tortilla-maker built by Polley and a picnic table. At the moment, El Centro has enlisted three guitar instructors, one of them a local, Keyne said. Classes will be in person and virtually. Spanish and English will be taught through Polley's Sonoran Language Institute. And teens interested in becoming entrepreneurs can learn those skills by running the coffee shop. Jesus Moreno, from Naco, Sonora, and a student at Bisbee High, was helping out at El Centro on Friday. Moreno, who's 17, was learning how to hook up the espresso machine along with his friends Saul and Paul Carillo, also Bisbee High students. Rev. Rosa Brown, the associate for Hispanic Ministries at Trinity Cathedral in Phoenix who chairs the Bi-National Arts Institute board, said El Centro will be key in connecting with youth from both sides of the border. Brown, who was also involved with Concerts Without Borders, said El Centro is envisioned as a secure place where youth can share ideas. Its location, just a few feet from the Mexican border, is not by accident. For now, El Centro is in its fledgling stage as Keyne, Polley and volunteers begin to set hours of operation, as well as schedules for music and language classes. Anyone interested in volunteering at El Centro or donating resources of any kind can call 520-678-9067. - Thanks for listening, before we continue, a quick message from our sponsors, Prestige Family Living. According to the program director, Dan Barrera, the Vacation Bible School offered by First Baptist Church of Benson drew about 140 children this year. There, the children do hands-on projects and rotate through about six different stations where activities relate to Jesus and a biblical theme. The weeklong Bible school is free. Kids are there from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. working on crafts, participating in recreational activities, bouncing around to music and excavating for relics through Tom Olson's popular Geology for Kids. The excavations were a favorite activity. Children of all ages sat quietly in sectioned-off areas of a sand box and dug down with a trowel in search of hidden artifacts and other treasures. Each day focuses on a different verse in the Bible, with activities that relate to that verse. Several churches throughout Cochise County hold Vacation Bible School. But last year, most churches canceled because of COVID. But this year churches in Sierra Vista, Douglas and Willcox are planning to have Vacation Bible School, as planned. It's time to start training for the Triathalon! Swim 800 yards, bike 13 miles, and run 5 kilometers at Sierra Vista's 20th Annual Hummingbird Triathlon! You can compete as an individual, or as a member of a female, male, or coed team in this chip-timed race. It's open to ages 10 and up. Be sure to register early to save some money and guarantee your event T-shirt and swag from our sponsors. The race starts and finishes at The Cove. - Finally, today we're remembering the life of Alex H. Castro of Sierra Vista, Arizona. Alex was born on October 6, 1928, in Prescott. Throughout 47 years of working for Safeway Inc. while working up the corporate ladder he found his niche as managing stores. He was recognized as the longest lasting store manager when he retired in 1992 in Sierra Vista. Alex married the love of his life, Mary G. Castro who was also born and raised in Prescott. They have been married for 70 years. He will always be remembered as “Mr. Safeway” to all who knew him. He served his community and was an active member of St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church. He was one of the founders of St. Vincent De Paul. A member of the Knights of Columbus since the age of 18. A former member of the Lions Club and Elks Club throughout Arizona. He was an avid sports fan of all sports but truly an Arizona Wildcat. His passion was playing golf. He had the “Biggest Loving Heart” for all his family and was the true Patriarch. Alex will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate his life. - Thanks for tuning in to the Herald Review podcast today, join us again on Friday!
