Sean Connery’s big Bond comeback and the bastard son of the James Bond franchise. Directed byIrvin Kershner. Starring Sean Connery, Kim Basinger, Barbara Carrera, Klaus Maria Brandauer, Max von Sydow, Bernie Casey and Rowan Atkinson. How is the world wrong about this film? From Bryan: In 1983 Bond fans were given the gift of two films!Released a few months after the “official” Bond film Octopussy, Never Say Never Again brought back OG Bond Connery. A remake of Thunderball and not made in the same style or standards of the MGM Bond films, this film has gotten a bad rap and buried over the years. We are going to warn you up front we are not a fan of this movie. Along these lines, we say some pretty harsh things about the Chuckster and Turtle Carradine, I mean David Carradine. So if you’re gonna get your feelings hurt by us making fun of this movie, we’ll see you next week for Miami Connection. Now with that out of the way, this is a stinker and we have so much fun Dominic stopped breathing for 3 consecutive minutes after Melissa called Kung Fu man a Diplodocus. This movie is so ridiculous its probably the funniest episode of the Go With The Heat podcast ever. You may not agree with our assessment of this movie, there is one thing we can all agree on… This is 100% a karate movie. Seriously, don’t miss this episode of the podcast. It is laugh out loud hilarious. But go ahead and skip Lone Wolf McQuade. This podcast is a better version. Movie info Premiered: April 15, 1983 Directed: Steve Carver Did a lot of work with Corman. We can make this work... probably? *Movie commentary track starts around 5:42, followed by discussion (and post-credit bloopers) at 2:19:45. (Movie runtime: 2 hours, 14 minutes)* In this "special" bonus episode of Podcasters Assemble, Erik, Kory, Chris, Justin, and Meghan *attempt to* record a virtual commentary track for Sean Connery's final (unofficial) Bond film, 1983's "Never Say Never Again", directed by Irvin Kershner (The Empire Strikes Back), based on Ian Fleming's 8th Bond novel, "Thunderball" (1961). Will the podcasters make it through the movie? Why did the producers decide to remake "Thunderball" with the same actor 20 years later? What does heroin, scuba diving with killer sharks, and high-stakes video game tournaments have to do with SPECTRE's plans? Watch along with us to find out! Starring Sean Connery returning as James Bond / 007, Kim Basinger as Domino, Klaus Maria Brandauer as Largo, Barbara Carrera as Fatima Blush, Bernie Casey as Felix Leiter, Edward Fox as M, Alec McCowen as Q, Rowan Atkinson as Nigel Small-Fawcett(?!), and Max von Sydow as Blofeld! Note: This commentary was recorded using the version of the film with the Orion logos, some versions of the movie open with the MGM logo for some weird and convoluted reason. Unfortunately, due to some issues with streaming lag, there are parts of the commentary that don’t directly line up with the movie, but we’ve done our best to edit around these, so don’t panic if it un-syncs slightly here and there. We’ve included bits of audio from the movie throughout so that listeners can follow along without the movie as well. “You’ve lived through the collapse of vaudeville and burlesque.” On the episode we take a look at the volcano-themed, disaster film WHEN TIME RAN OUT… (1980). A notorious critical and commercial flop, the movie has now passed into legend as the film that killed off the Seventies disaster genre. Helping Will to review the film is When Time Ran Out super-fan Fred Andersson from Schmollywood Babylon. They discuss the film’s “beautiful melodrama”, its questionable special effects, and why this film is the last great flowering of the Seventies disaster genre. Episode 93. Show notes When Time Ran Out… (1980) Director: James Goldstone Cast: Paul Newman, Jacqueline Bisset, William Holden, Edward Albert, Red Buttons, Barbara Carrera, Burgess Meredith, Ernest Borgnine, James Franciscus, Pat Morita. Plot: An active volcano threatens a south Pacific island resort and its guests as a power struggle ensues between the property's developer and a drilling foreman.
Junk Food Dinner's back to help you get through another week of quarantine! This week we have three very strange movies picked by the lunatics that are our Dom DeLuise Patreon donors!Up first, Roger Corman's New World Pictures serves up a rip-off of Alien that aims to be gorier and sleazier than it's source material with Galaxy of Terror from 1981, featuring an all-star cast of b-movie actors, including; Robert Englund, Ray Walston, Sid Haig, Erin Moran, Zalman King, Grace Zabriskie and Edward Albert. Then, Armand Assante plays hard-boiled cop Mike Hammer in an 80's-upped remake of a 1950's noir flick in which while investigating the death of his friend, he stumbles upon a sex clinic run by Barbara Carrera that's more escort service than medical practice and it has criminal ties that go all the way to the top in I, The Jury from 1982. And finally, Takashi Miike brings us a story about a four-generation family that despite their own personal issues, band together to open a bed & breakfast on the Japanese mountainside. However, their customers keep dying in odd ways, but instead of calling the cops, the family hides the bodies as not to hurt their already struggling business. Oh yeah, there's also claymation and musical numbers sprinkled throughout in the very weird The Happiness of the Katakuris from 2001.All this plus hot mask fashions, a call from The Fallen One, updates from the drive-in, film festivals coming to your house, this week's goofiest blu-rays and so much more! It's 1981 and the world wasn't quite ready for Michael Crawford in the title role of super-spy Condorman!
