David Lynch recently made an announcement, and in typical Lynchian fashion, nothing is as simple as it seems. One thing is for certain: it will be a treat for our eyes and ears. We also talk about one of the strangest musicals we have ever heard of. If you like anime and giant naked men, this may be the news you have been waiting for. When you are going to review a Roger Corman movie, it is hard to decide what to do. There are just so many of them. And his resume is so varied that even the most cursory look involves diving into a deep rabbit hole. So we decided to go with one that starred Jack Nicholson, Boris Karloff, and Dick Miller.Little did we know there was more to The Terror than just a bunch of famous names. After six directors, nine months, and days of filming without an actual script, the movie hit theaters. Unsurprisingly, it is not very good, but how well did its strong cast fare? Corman wanted his own take on Edgar Allen Poe, which he did manage to pull off, but the way he did it will surprise you (or not if you know anything about Corman's methods). Do modern eyes have a different take on The Terror?Over the course of five years and almost three hundred episodes, we have covered all sorts of topics. Most recently, we had Bruceploitation Month, but we have also done Black horror, LGBTQ horror, and Trucksploitation. It is so difficult that it took one of our loyal listeners to point out we had never covered movies made in the area we grew up.We begin Home is Where the DIE! Is month with a movie that has been on our radar. While 1972's Gargoyles was not what we specifically had in mind, we have been wanting to cover a made to TV genre movie for a long time. Lucky for us, we were able to find one that was filmed in Carlsbad Caverns and Laredo. With special effects done by the Academy Award winning Stan Winston (who also won a Primetime Emmy for his work here), Bernie Casey playing a winged gargoyle who rides a horse, and plenty of halter tops, the film does everything it can to pull in eyeballs. Despite the strange use of slow motion, the plot moves quickly. Is it an overlooked treasure of southwest cinema or is it best left in the 70s?Plus, our biggest complaint about Tubi. This week on the Exciting & New podcast Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Dave back against his wishes as we discuss, for the 2nd time this year, Bond, James Bond with the 1983 spy thriller Never Say Never Again. Sean Connery is dragged out of retirement for this off-brand Bond movie where he looks like the old Bond (which if actually the much younger Bond) as he gets the girl, cathces the bad guy and probably cashes a really big check. For legal reasons this movie can't use all the usual Bond goodies, so it does feel a little off, but Kim Basinger (Bassinger?) and Bernie Casey join the nosense and have a good time. If you are a Bond fan, you'll enjoy this one, and then go back and listen to our Octopussy podcast we did earlier in the year.

In charting Casey's trajectory, Mike and Dino discuss the 1970s as a boom for athletes, specifically African-American males, transitioning into the movies with much success as well as Casey's roles in Guns of the Magnificent Seven (1969) that kicked his career off before his breakout roles as a flashy vengeance seeker and his highly understated and emotive turn as a paralyzed basketball player that demonstrated Casey's wide range of talent. Plus, Bernie's butt (and maybe a testicle), an up and coming starlet known as Pamela Grier, the modest but memorable output of George Armitage and the underrated productions of Gene Corman are all covered in this double-stuffed serving of I Eat Movies #19: Overlooked Bernie Casey!

Attiba Royster, local artist (local to us) and big Deep Space Nine fan, drops by the podcast! He's here to discuss the two-episode arc introducing The Maquis. In Part 1, we meet Cal Hudson (played by Bernie Casey), an old friend of Sisko's who appears a bit disillusioned with the Cardassian treaty and not loving his new job in the DMZ. We learn some really important things in this episode - like opposites do not attract and there is not a thin line between love and hate (at least that's what Kim tells us, so it must be true). The Maquis This episode starts with somebody blowing up a Cardassian ship and ends with a kidnapping of Gul Dukat (honestly, they can keep him). But mostly the episode is full of a lot of shenanigans in the demilitarized zone which makes nobody happy. The Cardassians aren't happy to have Federation citizens in their territory and the Federation citizens aren't happy that they're getting slowly picked off one by one. Sisko's friend Cal isn't happy with his new crappy job and Sisko isn't happy that he has to spend more time with Gul Dukat. So overall, this treaty is not going well. In this episode, Greg and his special guest, James, introduce Susan to one of their favorite late 80s comedies, Keenan Ivory Wayans' "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka." The blacksploitation parody stars Wayans with actors of the blacksploitation genre: Jim Brown, Bernie Casey, Antonio Fargas, and Isaac Hayes. Other actors in the film are Kadeem Hardison, Ja'net Dubois, John Witherspoon, Dawnn Lewis, Damon Wayans, Clarence Williams III, John Vernon, and Chris Rock.   While Greg and James reminisce about the many times they've watched this highly-quotable movie, Susan explains the movie's origins and how it almost did not see the light of day and surpassed the studio's expectations for it. Greg throws us off the conversation more than once when he learns Susan didn't like the movie "Twins," the film against which "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" opened. Susan also flags this movie as another Roger Ebert one-star review as the group reacts. As always we select, our top three moments from the film. Resources referenced in the episode: Keenen Ivory Wayans discusses "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" - EMMYTVLEGENDS.ORG Roger Ebert Review of "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" - December 14, 1998, https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/im-gonna-git-you-sucka-1988

No longer mere architectural ornaments, gargoyles come to life in this enjoyably shclocky offering from 1973. Sam is joined in this episode by his first-ever repeat guest (!!!) Daniele Gaither, a comedian and actress with a thorough command command of pop culture. To its credit, GARGOYLES actually won an Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Makeup, and it is good… even if it’s used to make it really hard to tell that under all that monster drag is Bernie Casey, an actor of color given a rare prominent in one of these made-for-TV horror flicks. There's a catch though, these are the first two he's ever seen!!With the help of host Jon Cross, who's seen many many of the era's finest (and not so finest) films, they take each film step by step from the light, chop socky, Bruce Lee inspired, fun of Black Belt Jones into the harder, grittier and a little slower, Black Gunn.We also talk about stars Jim Kelly, Jim Brown, Bernie Casey, Martin Landau, Bruce Glover, Gloria Hendry, Scatman Crothers and more. This finishes up our Black History Month examination of these fascinating and entertaing African American films from the Seventies and we strongly urge everyone to check more of them out over at the Brown Sugar streaming App.
