Today on In the Ring we have Kai Davis. Kai runs Double Your eCommerce with SEO and provides growth and SEO consulting for Shopify merchants. He also writes about marketing growth and lead generation Lead Generation for service professionals daily at KaiDavis.com. Show Takeaways: Why the discovery phase is so important when starting with a potential client Why a 40-minute phone call with a price instead of a deep dive is inappropriate (and unfair to the client!) Start at the goal Why paid discoveries? Why can't you spend time with me? By charging the client, we know that they take the recommendations seriously and actually sees it as something valuable. RFPs are bad - the client is writing a self-diagnosis and is missing the critical thinking. What to say to the client who just wants to 'get to work' - and skip discovery. Why 'Slow and Steady' is fast What to tell the client who wonders why it takes so long/too expensive Why is it beneficial to agencies and consulting firms to do this as their first engagement as a paid discovery? Today on the show we have an interview with Jordan West, CEO of Mindful Marketing. As a multi-brand owner and marketer with his own agency, Jordan shares insights with SUMO Heavy Co-founder and CEO, Bart Mroz on scaling his online audience: Lessons learned in the restaurant industry Running gated eCommerce campaigns via SMS and VIP lists How brands can leverage Facebook VIP Groups: how he made $250,000 of eCommerce sales in 24 hours without using Facebook ads or discounts About Jordan: When he was 23 he decided to buy a Taco Del Mar restaurant. He knew he made a huge mistake at 2pm the first day when only 3 customers had walked in. (two of them were his parents) For the next 5 years he worked hard to grow sales every way he could think of and in the end, tripled his revenue which still didn't seem to matter on the profit side. He didn't make much. He realized the one thing he seemed to be the best at in the restaurant endeavour was the marketing and getting people in the door. Fast forward to 2014, his wife Carmen started a modest baby clothing line and was selling at craft markets. He tested out running a few ads on Facebook... and the rest is history. He learned every up and coming strategy and tactic and helped grow the small start-up to a multi-million dollar company and still growing. Building an eCommerc business can be complex, especially with all the fancy marketing strategies out there. But if you don’t have a solid basic foundation, you’ll never really realize the full potential of your business, says Bart Mroz of eCommerce consulting firm SUMO Heavy. What does Bart look at first when working with a business?
As the co-founder and CEO of SUMO Heavy Industries, a boutique digital commerce consultancy, Bart Mroz focuses on helping clients’ digital teams become more successful. He takes his coffee black. In this episode, we discuss: Bart’s 20-plus years in the commerce industry and the founding of SUMO Heavy SUMO Heavy's focus on emerging sellers (up to $25M annual revenues) and the enterprise space ($100M+) and the company’s intentionally limited number of clients How SUMO Heavy assesses what new clients need and roadmaps the work to come The current commerce environment and what retailers and brands need to compete and succeed (hint: it’s the consumer experience) The value and dangers of the overall transparency demanded by consumers today How the ecommerce platform space has evolved over the years, and how to think about current offerings (e.g. Shopify, Big Commerce, Workarea Commerce) The push towards microservices and why Bart expects even more commerce software options to hit the market in the next two years Whether retailers are moving more into “optimization mode” versus just implementing new, shiny solutions to solve their problems Why 2019 will be the year when retailers step back and find ways to work more efficiently and make ecommerce work better for the business – while some new commerce plays/models will come to market in the next wave of DNVB (digitally native vertical brand) innovation

Bart Mroz has his finger on the pulse of the eCommerce industry. He's the co-host of the Register Podcast and writes for Entrepreneur, Retail Dive, Social Media Today and more. This episode is all about emerging trends, what's next, and how we should approach (our least favorite term) omnichannel. Bart moved to the US as a boy who spoke no English. We talk some about being an immigrant entrepreneur and then dive into some pretty compelling questions such as: - What technologies will disrupt eCommerce in the next 1-5 years? - What are the most common problems you're solving for larger eCommerce clients right now? How do you think those will differ in 2-5 years? - What platforms and payment systems are you most impressed with? - How is omnichannel changing and where is retail in general headed? - Are there any legitimate contenders for Amazon - who could give them a run for their money? - Plus more! Bart is a fascinating guy, and I think you'll love the interview. Enjoy!
