About this Episode Time Stamps Q&A About our Guests Resources After decades as a highly regarded teacher and school leader in New Jersey, Principal Baruti Kafele began a journey to share his knowledge and experience with educators across the country. On this episode of Keystone Education Radio, podcast host Annette Stevenson and Principal Kafele discuss his career, the attitude gap, how to approach conversations about racism and social injustice, his role in transforming Newark Tech into an award-winning high school, and why he has been coined as America's discomfort speaker. Skip to: 01:20 To begin with, would you give us an overview of the journey that brought you to where you are today as an educator, writer and speaker? Skip to: 02:30 We know about various “gaps” - the achievement gap, the opportunity gap - Could you explain what the attitude gap is? “I want to transform attitudes because if I can change the attitude, then the achievement will follow.” “The attitude gap is the gap between those students who have the will to achieve excellence and those who do not.” Skip to: 05:20 Following the killing of George Floyd, there has been a loud call for social change across the country. What guidance would you give to schools about how to approach conversations about racism and social injustice? “Leadership has to have the courage, the backbone, the spine, the audacity, to engage staff in that tough conversation.” Skip to: 07:44 Under your leadership, Newark Tech transformed from a low-performing school to being recognized by U.S. News and World Report Magazine as one of America’s best high schools, three times over. What was the primary catalyst for this change? “When the vision can be shared, now there's a higher probability that we can turn this thing into our reality. So, our vision was shared, the students embraced the vision of what we can become, and now we were able to go to work and make it happen.” Skip to: 09:04 You have been coined as America’s discomfort speaker because of how you force your audiences to reflect on themselves. Can you explain why this type of self-reflection is important? “I'm here for you to look within yourself because as you feel that pain, so to speak, that will be the motivation or the impetus for you to bring about change to your practice.” Skip to: 12:20 How can listeners learn more about your work and your books? Q: Could you give us an overview of your journey that brought you to where you are today as an educator, writer and speaker? A: Yeah, the short version is that I was teacher in 1988 in Brooklyn, New York City. I loved it and decided to do it full time, so I came back home to Jersey and continued it. I became an award-winning teacher in a very short period of time as teacher of the year at the school district, county and finalist for New Jersey State Teacher of the Year. I went on and became a principal, which I did for 14 years. But while I was doing that work, even as a teacher, I was writing. So, I was writing my first books and here we are up to number 11. I left my principalship in 2011 because I wanted to do this. I wanted a larger platform to do it. I had been doing it for 30 some odd years, but it was simultaneous with my principalship, so that meant weekends and summers and that type of thing. And I really wanted to live it. So, I left in 2011 and that's what I've been doing ever since. Q: So, we hear about different types of gaps – achievement gap, opportunity gap. Could you explain the attitude gap? A: Yeah, I've had a focus on attitude since my undergraduate days in the early 80s. I thought that the whole idea of a positive attitude was a powerful thing. So, as I evolved as a practitioner, as an educator, I started thinking about attitude, attitude, attitude. Then with the achievement gap language, No Child Left Behind language and the pressures to close this achievement gap – at that time,

After three years of hard work and having the opportunity to meet Baruti in person at The AIE Conference in October we got to spend two powerful hours with him! Part 1 of this 3 part interview was 30 minute of Kafele's backstory and it was fascinating to us. You would assume that a person who has influenced as many educators as he has, he did 200 presentations in 2019, would have been an educator all his life. The fact is that it took him five years to get his high school degree and it was in his late 20s that he found his calling in education after taking an African American History class. This story is sums up his career in which he said he always had to "do it my way." In this episode he talks about how he code switches when in different settings how he has always remembered his why. Yet, JT’s life story may not fit the mold of an ideal Purpose Pusher.  When he was just a child he went from living in a 1987 Ford Fairmont, to a packed homeless shelter.  Then, after his mother applied for Section 8 housing, they soon relocated to a tough neighborhood in the South Norfolk area of Chesapeake, Virginia.  He attended Title 1 schools as a struggling student who failed to realize his academic potential.  Yet, in spite of the adversities he encountered as a youth, JT emerged out of an impoverished, single-parent upbringing with a desire to push others into their divine purpose in life.  JT is now a transformational educator who has three earned degrees (magna cum laude) and he is the 2017 City-wide Teacher of the Year for Chesapeake Public Schools in Virginia.  JT is also the founder of Purpose Pushers LLC which is a hybrid educational consulting company that couples research-based professional development with motivational speaking. He has written 5 books and presented at numerous K-12 schools, colleges/universities, and professional conferences across the East coast. (https://alwaysalesson.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Dw0Y7w7VYAA9sj-.jpg) Quotables I was present, but not available for learning. Cumulative Effect: I needed to hear the same message multiple different ways from many different people before it began to click. We know that educators wear so many hats, you have to be multi faceted. you have to be organized, analytical, understand curriculum framework and alignment, so many things you need. above everything else I think you need to have the right heart. i think you can learn strategies, techniques, so many things when you go into teacher prep programs but the one thing you cant learn is to be empathetic and have a heart for kids and love kids genuinely, authentically and want to be present to help them. Above all, educators who i consider teacher with a purpose are those who are understanding, empathetic, compassionate, resilient..to me they manifest character traits of good decent people opposed to those who we would consider book smart or have a good handle on curriculum and instruction. Teachers want to feel supported and have a sense of encouragement. Always be mindful of the reason why you entered the field of education. You need to approach every day like you’re on assignment. What’s not scheduled will not get accomplished. Their success is my success. It’s the teacher that creates the bridge to help [students] move from disengaged to highly engaged. This pedagogy stuff won’t work if you don’t build a relationship with kids. An uninspired teacher cannot be expected to inspire teachers. Featured ContentMike Andriulli joins us as our first-ever guest on the podcast! In this episode, we're talking all about ASCD Empower 2017, as well as conference attendance benefits. Mike shares his experience at the west coast conference, highlighting a session with education power-house, Baruti Kafele, one of the most sought-after educational speakers in the country. Other conference highlights include using math performance tasks, which Mike plans to turnkey to his district in the near future, as well as personal conversations had during downtimes. Mike's biggest regret/criticism was his inability to attend all the sessions he wanted to attend; the offerings were so robust that he could have easily attended more than one offering per session — we should all have that problem!Mike goes on to discuss his role in bringing new strategies to the teachers of his district and passionately shares his views that it is NOT ok for teachers to say, “I'm just not a math person.” We hope you enjoy our conversation with Mike as much as we did.Mike Andriulli is the Supervisor of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, at Hillsdale Public Schools (NJ). A former elementary and Math teacher, Mike has degrees from both Rowan University and Ramapo College. He is a well-respected educational leader with experience in curriculum design, staff development, and technology integration. He is also taking the time to learn more about the use of learning menus, asynchronous and personalized learning, which will hopefully create a stronger student-centered classroom experience.Chris continues to learn a lot about 20% Time and has implemented it for the last marking period with his High School Social Studies students. He has limited prior experience when it comes to this topic but is not afraid to try and put this opportunity in front of the students.Stacey has recently learned how not to deliver PD at a recent conference/PD Day. She was also able to pick up a few copies of Denis Sheeran's book Instant Relevance and hope to be leading a book group with my team. It was a great book with ideas that can easily be brought back to her team. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
