Join us on the 1st episode of season 4 as we talked to Principal Kafele @bkafele about the difference between the achievement gap and the attitude gap, the obligations of being a Black principal, what its like to transition from being a principal to being a consultant.
Am I, or can I be the leader my people need? This is a serious question every leader needs to pose to themselves and be able to answer with the utmost humility. There are different definitions of leadership, which can be subjective, but two quite resonate: Adeoye Mayowa defines leadership as the ability to evaluate and/or forecast a long-term plan or policy and influence their followers toward the achievement of the said strategy. Charles Handy (1992) also describes a leader as someone who shapes and shares a vision that gives direction to the work of others. This is an interesting and extensive topic of discussion, but it was broken down by a professional on today's podcast of Change Starts Here.Podcast host, Dustin Odham, brought on Principal Kafele, an author and transformational school leader, and a man so deeply ingrained in his purpose of leadership, to talk about how to be a transformational leader. He also spoke about his habit of discipline and how this can influence people and help him become the best version of himself. Kafele also explained how we can transfer transformational and influential leadership to our schools and kids to help them become the best version of themselves. "The struggle for the liberation of the minds of our children is worth dying for," Kafele said.Odham and Kafele also discussed…• How to create a learning revolution • How to get over speed bumps people put in front of themselves• Leadership advice on how to get people on board and build relationships"The children have to be able to see themselves in the learning if it's going to be relevant, if they are going to be able to embrace it, claim it, take ownership of it, and take it beyond the walls of the school," Kafele said. People only relate to what is in their lives (what is relevant to them); they relate to what they see themselves in."Can your teachers say they have grown exponentially because of the teachings and guidance they received from you?" How are you utilizing the human capital in your school? "Are you building people and nurturing relationships or stepping on people?" Kafele rhetorically asked, “Be brutally honest with yourself about the question, ‘Is my school a better place because I lead it?', and don't let your ego answer.”Always remember, it's never about you. "You can't be egocentric and think it's all about you—it's all about the people you lead; being a servant (servant leadership) is all that matters."Principal Kafele has been a highly regarded urban public school educator in New Jersey for over twenty years. He distinguished himself in the classroom and as a school leader. He is also the author of seven books, including his national best-sellers, “Motivating Black Males to Achieve in School and in Life”, “Closing the Attitude Gap”, and his recently released title, “The Principal 50: Critical Leadership Questions for Inspiring Schoolwide Excellence”. What You'll Find in this Podcast Episode with Frederick White The Labyrinth of Leadership, as Fredrick explains it, is a solicitation of ideas from leaders around the country--folks with “skin in the game.” Don't miss what Dr. White says about his personal take-away from the Labyrinth project. Listen to the language he uses, so important and grossly undervalued. Frederick talks about self-reflection as a universal need for leaders. It's all about finding the time. Dr. White tells us about the importance of defining the “end product.” This part is profound. He says that the greatest leaders are the ones who are willing to continue to grow, regardless of how much they have achieved. Joe asks Frederick to explain one of his recent tweets about celebrating small wins. Every school leader needs to hear this. Dr. White talks about the difference between goal setting and dream chasing. This alone is worth the listen. Be a dream chaser! You want to hear the part about failure being the struggle that we often need to grow. Frederick's butterfly story is awesome. Frederick mentions both Principal Kafele and Todd Whitaker as inspiration. Check out The Principal Project. Advice from Dr. White: pause and go for a walk. Just taking the time to walk and observe is powerful for peace, self-reflection, and a solid reminder of what we want and need. Frederick is striving for the most perfect environment he can provide. His reflection about this is great. To continue to grow, Frederick starts by never settling. He looks to be present with his teachers to learn from them. He mentions writing and researching as things that force him to continue to grow. About this Episode Time Stamps Q&A About our Guests Resources After decades as a highly regarded teacher and school leader in New Jersey, Principal Baruti Kafele began a journey to share his knowledge and experience with educators across the country. On this episode of Keystone Education Radio, podcast host Annette Stevenson and Principal Kafele discuss his career, the attitude gap, how to approach conversations about racism and social injustice, his role in transforming Newark Tech into an award-winning high school, and why he has been coined as America's discomfort speaker. Skip to: 01:20 To begin with, would you give us an overview of the journey that brought you to where you are today as an educator, writer and speaker? Skip to: 02:30 We know about various “gaps” - the achievement gap, the opportunity gap - Could you explain what the attitude gap is? “I want to transform attitudes because if I can change the attitude, then the achievement will follow.” “The attitude gap is the gap between those students who have the will to achieve excellence and those who do not.” Skip to: 05:20 Following the killing of George Floyd, there has been a loud call for social change across the country. What guidance would you give to schools about how to approach conversations about racism and social injustice? “Leadership has to have the courage, the backbone, the spine, the audacity, to engage staff in that tough conversation.” Skip to: 07:44 Under your leadership, Newark Tech transformed from a low-performing school to being recognized by U.S. News and World Report Magazine as one of America’s best high schools, three times over. What was the primary catalyst for this change? “When the vision can be shared, now there's a higher probability that we can turn this thing into our reality. So, our vision was shared, the students embraced the vision of what we can become, and now we were able to go to work and make it happen.” Skip to: 09:04 You have been coined as America’s discomfort speaker because of how you force your audiences to reflect on themselves. Can you explain why this type of self-reflection is important? “I'm here for you to look within yourself because as you feel that pain, so to speak, that will be the motivation or the impetus for you to bring about change to your practice.” Skip to: 12:20 How can listeners learn more about your work and your books? Q: Could you give us an overview of your journey that brought you to where you are today as an educator, writer and speaker? A: Yeah, the short version is that I was teacher in 1988 in Brooklyn, New York City. I loved it and decided to do it full time, so I came back home to Jersey and continued it. I became an award-winning teacher in a very short period of time as teacher of the year at the school district, county and finalist for New Jersey State Teacher of the Year. I went on and became a principal, which I did for 14 years. But while I was doing that work, even as a teacher, I was writing. So, I was writing my first books and here we are up to number 11. I left my principalship in 2011 because I wanted to do this. I wanted a larger platform to do it. I had been doing it for 30 some odd years, but it was simultaneous with my principalship, so that meant weekends and summers and that type of thing. And I really wanted to live it. So, I left in 2011 and that's what I've been doing ever since. Q: So, we hear about different types of gaps – achievement gap, opportunity gap. Could you explain the attitude gap? A: Yeah, I've had a focus on attitude since my undergraduate days in the early 80s. I thought that the whole idea of a positive attitude was a powerful thing. So, as I evolved as a practitioner, as an educator, I started thinking about attitude, attitude, attitude. Then with the achievement gap language, No Child Left Behind language and the pressures to close this achievement gap – at that time,
If you think you are beaten, you are If you think you dare not, you don't, If you like to win, but you think you can't It is almost certain you won't. If you think you'll lose, you're lost For out of the world we find, Success begins with a fellow's will It's all in the state of mind. If you think you are outclassed, you are You've got to think high to rise, You've got to be sure of yourself before You can ever win a prize. Life's battles don't always go To the stronger or faster man, But soon or late the man who wins Is the man who thinks he can. - Walter D. This is part two of our interview with Principal Baruti Kafele and in this part of the conversation we dig into why leadership and leadership style matters so much to teachers. After a successful career as a teacher and administrator Kafele has spent the better part of two decades working with teachers and administrators in developing their leadership styles. Many of these questions are the ones he asked us when we saw him present at AIE in October of 2019 and we're so thrilled to share them with you. We hope that as an educator you realize that your individual leadership style matters and the important question you must ask yourself to find your leadership style comes from Kafele-- ask yourself WHY DO I LEAD THE WAY THAT I LEAD? Three years ago when we started the Value Adds Value Podcast (it was called The LED Project Podcast back then) we made a list of our dream educators to have on the podcast and at the top of the list was Principal Kafele! After three years of hard work and having the opportunity to meet Baruti in person at The AIE Conference in October we got to spend two powerful hours with him! Part 1 of this 3 part interview was 30 minute of Kafele's backstory and it was fascinating to us. You would assume that a person who has influenced as many educators as he has, he did 200 presentations in 2019, would have been an educator all his life. The fact is that it took him five years to get his high school degree and it was in his late 20s that he found his calling in education after taking an African American History class. This story is sums up his career in which he said he always had to "do it my way." In this episode he talks about how he code switches when in different settings how he has always remembered his why. The majority of the Truth for Teachers podcast episodes are on topics that will help improve your teaching practices with ALL of your students, but in some cases, I like to talk about specific student populations. It’s okay to focus for ONE episode on meeting the needs of English Language Learners, or students with special needs. And it’s okay to focus for an episode on students of color. In this case, I chose to focus even more specifically on that: to talk about black males in particular. My guest today, Principal Kafele, is a black male himself and is a nationally-renowned authority on his work with black male students. There’s a tremendous amount of research showing that many black males in the United States are facing unique challenges and are underserved. We do a disservice to our students if we pretend that the outcomes that our students experience from our school system are all the same regardless of race. Our black male students can do better, and we can do better by them. The question of HOW to do better is what we’re going to tackle today in my interview with Principal Kafele.
