Today we have a very candid conversation with Thando Kafele, otherwise known as the King of Loc. @thekingofloc "Thando Kafele possesses a clarity of vision for natural hair well-suited to the high priests of the Old African religions. Quite simply, he is a revolutionary, a sorcerer Who has been engaged in liberating natural hair for 25 years. Clients do not sit for hair appointments with him; they sit for spiritual transformation, ancestral divination, and wholesome reparations for the scalp, He works magic, re-imagining chair time as an opportunity to instill African magnificence in his clients. A visible yet unassuming presence, Kafele projects an earthy majesty. He makes you feel at ease immediately with his broad grin and deep dimples, but you also sense quickly his sacred energy. His hands are fleshy and dense, well suited for untangling, weaving, locking, braiding, parting, organizing, and oiling tendrils, tresses, and scalps. His mantra "Natural hair is not just about style; it's about health" is a reflection of the ways in which his practice is a site for total healing. He follows the long tradition of West African spiritual practices that recognize the head and the crown as sources of the Divine. These spiritual practitioners knew well the significance of the crown; they saw hair as an adornment to the psychic and spiritual energies that protect and nurture the body, and, as such, hair required particular attention by anointed hands. Kafele's stylings are imbued with wisdom, meaning, and power; they are only legible to those who have been initiated into the visual politics of the Afro-centric. They are regal signifiers from the African past with messages of ethnic pride. They are meant to be donned unapologetically with dignity. African locs, Dreads, Afros, and Corn Rows had been prohibited in many corporate spaces as unacceptable corporate appearance; this is starting to change. Very recently, the New York City Human Rights Law has been expanded to make it illegal to discriminate on the basis of the stylings of Black hair. Black hairstyles are protected racial characteristics because they are an inherent part of Black identity. The dismantling of this practice in the largest city in the United States speaks to the revolutionary influences of natural hair style wizards like Kafele. As his clientele continues to grow, Kafele reminds us that the revolution will not be texturized." —Timothy Benston
Am I, or can I be the leader my people need? This is a serious question every leader needs to pose to themselves and be able to answer with the utmost humility. There are different definitions of leadership, which can be subjective, but two quite resonate: Adeoye Mayowa defines leadership as the ability to evaluate and/or forecast a long-term plan or policy and influence their followers toward the achievement of the said strategy. Charles Handy (1992) also describes a leader as someone who shapes and shares a vision that gives direction to the work of others. This is an interesting and extensive topic of discussion, but it was broken down by a professional on today's podcast of Change Starts Here.Podcast host, Dustin Odham, brought on Principal Kafele, an author and transformational school leader, and a man so deeply ingrained in his purpose of leadership, to talk about how to be a transformational leader. He also spoke about his habit of discipline and how this can influence people and help him become the best version of himself. Kafele also explained how we can transfer transformational and influential leadership to our schools and kids to help them become the best version of themselves. "The struggle for the liberation of the minds of our children is worth dying for," Kafele said.Odham and Kafele also discussed…• How to create a learning revolution • How to get over speed bumps people put in front of themselves• Leadership advice on how to get people on board and build relationships"The children have to be able to see themselves in the learning if it's going to be relevant, if they are going to be able to embrace it, claim it, take ownership of it, and take it beyond the walls of the school," Kafele said. People only relate to what is in their lives (what is relevant to them); they relate to what they see themselves in."Can your teachers say they have grown exponentially because of the teachings and guidance they received from you?" How are you utilizing the human capital in your school? "Are you building people and nurturing relationships or stepping on people?" Kafele rhetorically asked, “Be brutally honest with yourself about the question, ‘Is my school a better place because I lead it?', and don't let your ego answer.”Always remember, it's never about you. "You can't be egocentric and think it's all about you—it's all about the people you lead; being a servant (servant leadership) is all that matters."Principal Kafele has been a highly regarded urban public school educator in New Jersey for over twenty years. He distinguished himself in the classroom and as a school leader. He is also the author of seven books, including his national best-sellers, “Motivating Black Males to Achieve in School and in Life”, “Closing the Attitude Gap”, and his recently released title, “The Principal 50: Critical Leadership Questions for Inspiring Schoolwide Excellence”. Kafele is the recipient of over one hundred educational, professional, and community awards, which include the National Alliance of Black School Educators Hall of Fame Award, the Milken National Educator Award, the New Jersey Education Association Award for Excellence, and the City of Dickinson, Texas, proclaiming February 8, 1998, as Baruti Kafele Day.

Is my school better a better school because I lead it? These are the kind of reflections and questions that my next guest implores school leaders to consider...he carries a mirror with him to remind school leaders of where to look when examining leadership practice - in this episode we delve into the complex realities of school leadership and discuss the commitment made by principals and APs to take on this role in schools. Principal Kafele is known as America's principal because of his direct and compassionate approach to school leadership, he cares, he empathizes, he motivates, he encourages, he inspired, but most of all he transforms, as a transformative school leader he was responsible for dramatic shifts in schools he has led, with recognitions as one of America's Best High Schools by US News and World Report after tremendous turnaround efforts, he continues his work around the country as a best selling author, speaker, and keynoter. You'll hang on to his every word as he relays his personal story, his why, his journey, and his powerful message to all teachers and leaders on this next episode of Season 2 of the We See You, Teacher Podcast, Episode 12 - You See the Passion ft. This is part two of our interview with Principal Baruti Kafele and in this part of the conversation we dig into why leadership and leadership style matters so much to teachers. After a successful career as a teacher and administrator Kafele has spent the better part of two decades working with teachers and administrators in developing their leadership styles. Many of these questions are the ones he asked us when we saw him present at AIE in October of 2019 and we're so thrilled to share them with you. We hope that as an educator you realize that your individual leadership style matters and the important question you must ask yourself to find your leadership style comes from Kafele-- ask yourself WHY DO I LEAD THE WAY THAT I LEAD? This episode is all about purpose and we hope that it helps you to reengage with your purpose as an educator! To learn more about Baruti Kafele head over to prinicipalkafele.com! Three years ago when we started the Value Adds Value Podcast (it was called The LED Project Podcast back then) we made a list of our dream educators to have on the podcast and at the top of the list was Principal Kafele! After three years of hard work and having the opportunity to meet Baruti in person at The AIE Conference in October we got to spend two powerful hours with him! Part 1 of this 3 part interview was 30 minute of Kafele's backstory and it was fascinating to us. You would assume that a person who has influenced as many educators as he has, he did 200 presentations in 2019, would have been an educator all his life. The fact is that it took him five years to get his high school degree and it was in his late 20s that he found his calling in education after taking an African American History class. This story is sums up his career in which he said he always had to "do it my way." In this episode he talks about how he code switches when in different settings how he has always remembered his why. Please be on the look out for episodes 2 and 3 and to learn more about his work head over to principalkafele.com! Please do us a favor and hit the subscribe button and share this episode! Recently, I read "The Teacher 50: Critical Questions for Inspiring Classroom Excellence" by Dr. Kafele, and I share my own perspective, key takeaways and I share some personal experiences from the classroom. This is a good one with a lot of emphasis on how we think as teachers, so I hope you gain a lot of value from this episode! If you do, feel free to leave a review, it would mean the world to me :) This is the first episode I actually break down a book from the teacher world, so let me know what you think. If you have any other book recommendations, feel free to send me a message. I got a few more lined up in the meantime, so stay tuned for more episodes in the next few days and I wish you all the best!
Sir LSG began his career as a DJ in 2006 whilst studying to become an electrical engineer at the University of The Witwaterstrand. It seems the love for music soon took precedence as the young SIr LSG started collecting records. Soon after Co-founding Hood Natives in 2007 with 3 other DJs based in Soweto, Sir LSG enrolled at the Soul Candi Institute of Music to learn more about electronic music production. After completing the short course at Soul Candi, Sir LSG enrolled at the Academy of Sound Engineering to do a two year diploma majoring in Music Production & Audio Post Production. It was the 2008 Southern African Music Conference that became a defining juncture in Sir LSG's music path, when he caught the ear of legendary DJ Christos, whom since became his mentor. Thanks to the relationship with Christos, German producer Ralf GUM came across Sir LSG's song “Sax in the City” in 2011 , which finally found its way to light when released on GOGO Music. With remixes from another German based Producer Raw Artistic Soul, and a fellow South African DJ/Producer Nastee Nev, "Sax In The City" reached the second spot on Traxsource's top singles chart. To date, the Mafikeng born Lesego Sefako has collaborated with Brian Temba, a legendary South African R&B singer/songwriter and trumpeter Kafele on a song titled All I Am, which enjoyed great air play on South African Radio Stations and became a local dance floor anthem. In 2014 Sir LSG was voted by Traxsource at Number 20 on the Top 100 Afro House Producers of the year. Checkout what he prepared for #TheAshmedHour during a live recording at Junxion Lifestyle in Middelburg. Love, Peace & Music #20GOLDEN18

1BubbadogGoin' Round VINYL ONLYVinyl Only 2Brian Nance, Bes, Kafele, SlottaThe Remixes Part One (Slotta Paradise Instrumental)Stellar Disco Records 3DkAThunder (Maximiljan Remix)My Vision Records 4Mij MackAll These Things (Original Mix)HIPPIES 5Tom JayHotline Fling (Original Mix)Sense Traxx 6Inspector MacbetOn the Top (Rishi K. Just last year, I had the privilege of seeing Mr. Baruti Kafele speak at a local school. It was extremely inspirational and helped reinvigorate my passion for education and building relationships with students. I am honored to have had the opportunity to speak to him on my show and look forward to connecting with him in person at some point. I'd highly recommend checking out his books as well as his website, which is home to his dynamic YouTube videos, which deliver powerful messages to both educators and students alike. There's a new party in town! Chihuahua and Corona just last week launched LIMON, a celebration of life, music, and the zest that makes it all worthwhile. DJ Aimax Macoy kicked off the festivities with a fun 80s set that went on till 5am, while hostesses Kat Lagman and Edel Sarmiento made everyone feel right at home :) This week, we've got a strong, soulful DJ line-up: Mike Constantino (Conscious & The Goodness) brings nu-jazz and rare r&b to the table, and Jay Lobo (deepersoul) delivers a mix of deep house with beautiful instrumentals and groovy harmonies. The evening is hosted by the always vivacious Angela McDonald. This is the first Jay Lobo mix we feature on the radio program. Although Jay's been performing in Manila for quite some time, we never physically crossed path (we've interacted with him and heard his music online) and for one reason or another we never connected... until earlier this year at M Cafe, when we were blown away by his exquisite opening set. Here's a taste of what you'll hear on Friday night! 1. Teddy Douglas Ft Marcel & Natalie the Floacist - Good Morning Love (Early Morning Mix) 2. Quincy Jones - Tell Me A Bedtime Story (Opolopo Cut & Paste Mix) 3. The Funklovers - Cloud of Memories 4. Souldynamic Ft Angela Johnson - Love (Terry Hunter Bang Main Mix) 5. Sometimes we just seem to be in the right place at the right time. Such is the case as I happened to "discover" the music of Jovia. Actually, we were on Twitter last night and a virtual conversation about music made it's way back and forth as a series of direct messages. As it turns out, Jovia and I are related! LOL Well, we know some of the same people and therefore, we are knit at the souls. One mention of Stico Von Drake, Kafele Bandele, or Koku Gonza and you have my attention for good. See how small the world is? http://www.joviamusic.com/ I can already imagine the feedback we're going to receive about this award winning, multi-percussionist, producer, and seasoned vocalist. As beautiful as the day, Jovia's music is destined to find it's way into your hearts. We asked to feature this track which comes from her album. Find the rest of the album on iTunes and for all the Twitterholics out there, find and follow her at http://twitter.com/JoViamusic! Show your love.... dj coa
Koku Gonza is the definition of natural talent. She is a singer who specializes in song writing and her music can be categorized in different genres-- nu soul, rhythm and blues, electro soul, etc. Koku was influenced by two key musicians in her life--her father and her mother. Her father, a renowned Tanzanian composer and guitarist, exposed Koku to the African music of his roots. Koku Gonza's mother, a flute/sax player and a cultured musician from the U.S. , shared her knowledge in multiple genres such as Gospel, Jazz and Classical music with Koku. Koku Gonza inclines the creativity of a combination of various styles of music. At a young age, Koku learned how to play piano and sang Gospel in the Classical Citywide children's choir. While attending college, she studied music production and song writing at Indiana University School of Music in Bloomington before deciding to pursue a career in the music industry. Koku Gonza's voice is unique. Her love for the guitar has resulted in mandatory accompaniment with most of her songs, but she works with different instruments to create her unique sound. She performed at the Chicago Soul Music Festival with the Legendary ROY AYERS, the Super Soul event with Grammy Nominated YAHZARAH from Foreign Exchange and the Peace House Africa -Tanzania Exposed, an organization which shelters AIDS orphans, with Grammy Nominated MATTHEW SANTOS. Her style can be heard in a jumping house beat or a soft melodic down tempo tune.

Kafele, trumpeter, composer and producer, has been playing the trumpet for over 18 years. The name Kafele (pronounced kuh-FAY-lay) is of Egyptian origin, and means "worth dying for". Born in Baltimore, Maryland and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Kafele was first exposed to jazz by his parents. In fact, he attributes his love and appreciation for the art to his father who often listened to recordings of John Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis among others. Later, his brothers and sisters introduced him to Hip-Hop and R&B. As a byproduct of becoming a Chicago resident for about 7 years, Kafele was inundated with lively, upbeat house music. This musically enriched background provided the influences that helped cultivate his unique sound. While attending Southern University in Baton Rouge, he studied Jazz Music Theory under the leadership of world-renowned jazz artist and educator, Alvin Batiste. During this time, Kafele was establishing a reputation by performing at various venues in Louisiana, Georgia, Texas and Alabama. He collaborated with a group of talented musicians to form The Kafele Bandele Group. This group frequently performed at M's Fine and Mellow Café in Baton Rouge. He also appeared at the Baton Rouge Blues Festival, House of Blues in New Orleans and the internationally acclaimed New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. After earning a degree in Physics from Southern University, Kafele moved to Chicago with plans to expand and elevate his musical career. Following years of hard work his plan is taking off with an untamable force. In 2003, Kafele officially launched K. Kapano Records, Inc. in which he plans to elevate his own musical career, produce other talented artists, and perpetuate the appreciation of jazz-fusion. Already, he has released his debut album, "Prodigal Moon" which introduces a new genre of music that infuses spontaneous trumpet riffs with pulsating, hypnotic baselines. He calls this music Cool Fusion-a poetic entanglement consisting of the finest elements of jazz and the richness of Hip-Hop and other forms of music. In addition, Kafele has successfully penetrated the Chicago music scene and has performed in Baltimore, New York, Dallas, Detroit, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Washington D.C. and Miami at the venues listed below: The Wild Hare (Opening for Slum Village), Isaac Hayes, Rhythm, The Cotton Club, The District, The Hot House, The Chicago Theater (opening for Kem), The Congress Theater (opening for Erykah Badu) The House of Blues Chicago (opening for Boys II Men/ Amel Larreuix), Sounds of Brazil in New York, and has been featured on various college and commercial radio stations.Kafele is a musical visionary who believes that there is a difference between music produced for the sole purpose of making money and music created as an expression of one's inner self. He hopes that listeners will recognize this difference in his music. In his own words, "Music is a true reflection of the heart and soul." email bluenote89@hotmail.com
