It's good to be alive in 1985! Joining Tyler this week - after finishing his shift operating the pornograph machine in the Forbidden Records Dept – is Sean Gaffney, who was keen to talk about the Goons' celebrated take on Orwell's 1984 which had been dramatized for BBC Television merely weeks earlier. 1985 was received so warmly by listeners that it was swiftly followed by a restaged episode but the show we will be focusing on is the first (and best) version. We talk about how closely it follows the narrative of the source material, how its overwhelming topicality did not hinder the laughs and speculate as to the reasons for some script and performance decisions – what happened to the Ben Lyon gag? Was the old antique shop owner meant to be Crun or not? Plus we find out about Ronnie Waldman, Maurice Winnick, Len Hutton and Issy Bonn. We start with two versions  of the same song. Ted Heath and his music gives us an instrumental version of Mountain Greenery and then Mel Torme sings the definitive version of the song. Not forgotten Mel but is not celebrated enough. He was bizarrely known as The Velvet Frog.  Fantastic lyrics from Lorenz Hart- 'How-how-how-how-how we love sequestering..' What's not to love there? Classics from Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, The Andrew Sisters and our old friend Leslie Hutchinson, Hutch. We have both sides of a Charlie Barnet record- Pumpton Turnpike and Swinging on Nothing. Charlie was one of the first band leaders to integrated his band. Massive fan of Basie and Ellington. Oscar Rabin plays a great version of Cherokee. He was a Latvian born English band leader. Sentimental Journey from Paul Fenoulhet, vocals Doreen Lundy Slightly mad track from Bill Snyder, Drifting Sands, vocals by Ralph Stirling. Our oldest track is Driftwood from Leo F Reisman from 1924. Bebe Daniels sings Imagination. She was an all round entertainer but is best remembered in Britain as being in the long running radio series Life with the Lyons, with husband Ben Lyon. Archie Lewis is a new discovery for me. Known as the Crosby of the Caribbean. He was one of the first black singers to front a big band in Britain, Geraldo's band. A pioneer and very popular in the 1940s and yet forgotten now it would seem. We get romantic with our last two. Roy Fox with vocals by Denny Dennis On the beach at Bali Bali and Carroll Gibbons, vocals by Leslie Douglas gives us I don't want to set the world on fire. Lovely version of a classic song. Stay safe out there.   Thanks to Jessica Parkman for many of the records in this episode

Orlando City finally got that elusive first home win over the Chicago Fire. The Lions hadn’t beaten the Fire since 2015, when they did it twice, but I mean, come on. We’re talking about fire here and it’s hard for a mammal to defeat burning flames — even if that mammal is the king of the jungle. We break down a 4-1 win that felt a lot closer than that score would indicate, on a weird and wet night at Exploria Stadium. We’re once again unanimous on our Man of the Match selections, too. We’ve also got updates on Matheus Aias and recent transfer news. The Orlando Pride kicked off their 2020 schedule (finally) with a delightful 0-0 draw on the road against the North Carolina Courage. I’m not being the least bit sarcastic when I say the word ‘delightful,’ either. That’s a good result for a team that hadn’t played in almost a full year against an accomplished side. We touch on the scoreless draw and a good performance by the young fullbacks. OCB had the weekend off unexpectedly after a positive COVID-19 test within the organization. The Young Lions will try to get back on track this Saturday morning at 11 a.m. against New England Revolution II, Electric Boogaloo. I might have added some words to the actual team name. Then we bring on our special guests. Thad Bell of The Blue Testament and Ben Lyon from Big D Soccer stop by to give us some information about Orlando City’s two opponents this week — Sporting Kansas City and FC Dallas, respectively. Big thanks to both for giving us an overview of their teams and also for letting us know that other clubs’ fans are out there feeling good for Orlando City fans in 2020. It’s nice to hear. There’s schedule news, as the Lions now know the remainder of their 2020 regular-season MLS schedule and we’re going to be seeing a lot of familiar faces the rest of the way. We break down the slate of games and who is missing from it. Then we go back into Pride mode for a few minutes because the Pride are back! This week’s Ask Us Anything segment wants to know about movies, breweries, music, and actual soccer things. If there’s anything — and we do mean anything —you want us to address on our next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. After the mailbag, we give you our key match-ups and score predictions for Orlando City’s match-up tonight at Sporting Kansas City and Sunday at FC Dallas. That’s all for this week. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here’s how show No. 215 went down: 0:15 - The Lions win a non-lopsided game over the Fire by a lopsided score line on a rainy Saturday in Orlando. We break it down, then talk some actual Pride soccer. 41:17 - Thad Bell gives us the Sporting Kansas City perspective ahead of a Wednesday night match-up between two teams near the top of their respective conferences. 54:56 - Ben Lyon provides the FC Dallas perspective and puts some respect on Oscar Pareja’s name. 1:07:05 - MLS schedule talk, more about the Pride, our mailbag, and our key match-ups and predictions for both SKC and Dallas. It's an odd but energetic start with Alma Cogan, the girl with a giggle in her voice. Here she sings about Lizzie Borden, the girl with an axe in her hand! Lena Horne, when she was still a big band vocalist, Connie Boswell and Barbara Lyon. She was the daughter of Ben Lyon and Bebe Daniels, the US stars who made it big in Britain. Paula Green and her Orchestra. Paula sang with Joe Loss and Glenn Miller and was born in blackpool, Lancashire. Also appeared on the WW2 show ITMA. French star Jean Sablon, you get variety here. Talking of which: Bob Hamilton Trio, 'Dinner music for hungry canibals' and Hobo Jack- real name Ernie Hare. He wasn't a hobo but a very well paid radio star. The amazing voices of Paul Robeson and Josh White. Two men who weren't just fine singers but activists. There's more of course.

First of all, I want to apologize for the sound quality of the non-interview segments of the show. Recording myself alone takes place in a much different way and I had no co-host this week. I didn't realize that the quality was off until after the entire first segment had been completed. But, I cleaned it up as best I could and although it isn't the usual quality, it's better than it was. So there's that. OK, with that out of the way, it's time for Episode 55 of the PawedCast, in which I fly solo to take you through Orlando City's two matches this week, recapping both and giving you my takes, as well as my Man of the Match selections. We invited Ben Lyon from Big D Soccer onto the podcast to help us preview this weekend's game against FC Dallas. We asked other Ben about what is happening with FC Dallas right now and all of the missing defenders that the team will have due to international callups. We also ask him about Max Urruti and Mauro Rosales, before getting into the state of Dallas' homegrown players. Finally, we ask him to gameplan Dallas for Ben Olsen. Its a good (half) of a show, so give it a listen!

Michael Citro and Kevin Mercer recap the 10-man draw at Real Salt Lake last week. Neither of us are completely (or at all) convinced that Kaká deserved to be sent off for what he did at Rio Tinto Stadium, but we're both glad the lads rallied around their captain and came home with another hard-fought road point. We discuss the Brazilian's red card at length, as well as the shoddy record of that night's referee, Sorin Stoica. We then welcome Ben Lyon from Big D Soccer to the show. Ben gives us the 411 on our opponents Saturday night at the Citrus Bowl, FC Dallas. He tells us who's away on international duty, what we can expect from the boys from Big D, and even how to stop Fabian Castillo (sort of). But there are two guests this week! Our own Louisville City FC correspondent Jeff Milby joins us to talk about last week's big USL announcement by Orlando City and what the reaction was in the Derby City. We also dicuss OCSC draft pick Sidney Rivera's progress, as well as Louisville's designs on MLS someday. Kevin and Michael then wrap up our Salt Lake discussion with our Man of the Match (it was unanimous), preview Dallas and give you our never entertaining, why-do-we-even-do-it match predictions! Here's the rundown: 0:25- Michael and Kevin are happy with a point but sad we won't see Kaká on the weekend. 13:11- Ben Lyon knows a lot about FC Dallas and is willing to share that info. Also we hope his match prediction is exactly wrong. 30:53- Milbz is in the house! Jeff gives us the latest from Louisville and wants Sidney Rivera to hustle. 47:13- Final RSL thoughts, our MotM, a quick peek at Dallas, and predictions! Learn more about your ad choices. Woah! 2012 is less than two months old, and there's already so much kick-ass rock n' roll coming out that it's making my head spin! So yeah, this time around Random Old Records Podcast #40 is an uninterrupted hour of straight-up jams because there just wasn't any room for the quirky soundbytes you all know and love. HAHA. This fat stack of tracks features one song each from the latest batch of HoZac Records releases, including The Band In Heaven, Radar Eyes, Teledrome, and Bare Mutants, which all rule as usual. Teledrome's super-catchy electro-punk is the real gem this time around. Seriously, give this dude a proper studio and budget and he'll be on the cover of magazines in a year. Mark my words!Random Old Records #40 also features an EXCLUSIVE track from the upcoming second LP by killer Wisconsin garage punk duo The Hussy! It's called "Mind Alright," the LP is called Weed Seizure, and it's set to be released by Tic Tac Totally sometime next month. This record is a monster folks, just check out the sick artwork by Ben Lyon below! Elsewhere, you'll hear BRAND NEW tracks from upcoming releases by The Sugar Stems, Digital Leather, and Terry Malts, current tunes by Coasting, Gap Dream, Wiccans, The Pharmacy, and Gary Wrong, classics from the Angry Samoans and Teengenerate, and more, more, MORE!!! It all finishes up with a modern classic pop tune from former Lost Sounds and River City Tanlines frontwoman Alicja-Pop that will shake you up good if you're paying attention. This is one of my favorite episodes I've coughed up in awhile, so I hope y'all dig it!Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE to Random Old Records via iTunes, Google Play, or RSS.
