The Joe and Smith Podcast: Read the Book of Mormon with us

The guys are back after another unplanned hiatus. Smith reminds Joe of some of his favorite mormonads, Joe isn't convinced they're real. Joe shares his thoughts on the authorship of the Bible after having listened to a lot of the Bible Brothers podcast. He plays a couple of BOM-related clips from it. Joe inaccurately refers to this unattributed picture of Tiger King Noah. Joe kills some fun by bringing up info that he heard from this 5-hour Jahndallyn episode. Smith wishes he had this meme about a former US pres on hand.  The guys don't know much about Marshall Mathers. Smith thinks Tony Soprano may expedite the succession process in church leadership. Smith mentions Ari Shaffir's 2022 special: Jew. Joe proposes the idea that the BOM may be more boring than the NT, but definitely less boring than the OT. Joe remembers this video from Onion News Network.    Music Provided by Eric VanAusdal The Book of Mormon is publicly available at churchofjesuschrist.org  Become a Celestial Subscriber on our patreon at- https://patreon.com/joeandsmith  Remember who you are and what you stand for

The Showrunner in television literally runs the show, like a hands-on CEO: In charge of vision, creative (often the head writer), leading (and inspiring) a crew of hundreds, managing multiple agendas from the network to the legal department, marketing and advertisers while putting out daily fires and tapping into the personal magic that earned them the role in the first place.  Sharing all his wisdom on the subject is Jim Biederman, seasoned Showrunner, Executive Producer, Writer and Director specializing in comedy programming with a list of trailblazing credits including Kids In the Hall, the Howard Stern Radio Show, The Whitest Kids You Know, the Onion News Network, The Big Gay Sketch Show and Would You Rather With Graham Norton (where I had the distinct pleasure of being Jim's Talent Executive) This is really and truly a masterclass: Ask questions Listen more, speak less Show respect Protect your staff Never respond right away to the notes from the network Get comfortable with tough choices and difficult conversations Learn to bounce back early from failure TV is global Be curious and learn to work across language and cultural differences We can all earn something from The Joy Act, a standard feature in Chinese programming (it's not what you think!) Successful showrunning is so much about the power of language and how we communicate. Jim's goal is to always make sure that everyone working on the show feels welcome and valued at the table. And this: You don't need to be aggressive about it. You can just say, I think there's another way to solve this problem. (It dawned on me listening to this episode that with the amount of negotiating and compromise required to get a show on the air...Showrunners could be useful mediators in global conflicts.)   Check out more of Jim's work at http://www.jimcotv.com/.

And because we love to writing satire, talking about it, and the people who do it, we've expanded into podcasting! Today, we interview Scott Dikkers! Scott Dikkers founded the world's first humor website, TheOnion.com, in 1996. A few years earlier he helped found the original Onion newspaper. He's served as The Onion's owner and editor-in-chief, on and off, for much of the last quarter century. Scott co-wrote and edited The Onion's first original book, Our Dumb Century, a look at recent history through front pages of The Onion. It's sold over a million copies, debuting as a #1 New York Times and #1 Amazon bestseller. He also co-wrote and edited The Onion's second original book, Our Dumb World, a world atlas parody, which also debuted on the New York Times bestseller list. In the mid-2000's, Scott headed up the creation of "The Onion News Network" web series, serving as a director and executive producer. The series gave rise to many viral videos and a TV series on IFC. The web shorts won a Peabody Award in 2008. Scott led The Onion's rise from small, unknown college humor publication to internationally respected comedy brand. He gathered a talented team of writers and editors over the years, working with them to develop The Onion's culture of creative freedom and brutal honesty, its distinct comic voice, and its reliable process for generating award-winning satire, day after day. This unique process is spelled out in Scott's books, How to Write Funny, and the second in the series, How to Write Funnier, which are the basis of the Writing with The Onion program he created and teaches at The Second City Training Center in Chicago. Scott offers other courses and free resources for comedy writers on the How to Write Funny website. His work with The Onion, its website and other ancillary products, earned Scott the #43 spot on Time magazine's list of the Top 50 “Cyber Elite” alongside such iconic figures as Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and George Lucas. Scott began his career in the entertainment business with his self-syndicated comic strip, Jim's Journal. The popular college cartoon, comprised of little more than stick figures, spawned a self-published book collection that became a national bestseller. Rolling Stone magazine ranked “Jim” one of America's top ten favorite writers in 1992. Scott continues to draw and animate cartoons under the banner of the Dikkers Cartoon Company. In addition to his other work, Scott is an accomplished voice actor who's performed in many national commercials, video games and animated cartoons, including Saturday Night Live's “TV Funhouse.” He's also written and directed several award-winning short films, and two feature films, Spaceman, and Bad Meat. Today we talk about a variety of ideas, specifically: Early funny TV that caught his eye Digging Dr. Seuss Difference between MAD and Cracked magazine An interesting way that Steve Martin's book Cruel Shoes affected him Conner O'Malley and his unique approach to comedy New publications like the Babylon Bee Niching down into satire and parody How a lawyer went from trying to sue the Onion, to becoming a lawyer for the Onion Hiring people to do the things you don't like to do A typical publication week at the ONION Advice on direction from Baratunde Thurston  How Drupal editing almost killed creativity The Onion news segment on Dana Carvey Show hosted by Stephen Colbert The many "almost breakthroughs" while scaling The Onion's reach How a beginner can approach comedy My story about milk and Emo Phillips And much, much, more! Notable Quotes: "Nothing inspires me more than when I see something that's not good." "One of the highest compliments we can pay to a bit, or a joke or whatever is, oh, that's so stupid." On hiring new writers: "Early on, I would take anybody, anybody who came in and showed some eagerness to do it like that was the commodity. The commodity wasn't the writing talent. The commodity is “who's willing to step forward and say, I will try it, I will do it?” On people wanting to write for The Onion "I don't understand why all these people submitting to The Onion don't just start their own publication." On getting started in comedy writing: "It's such a slow, gradual process of starting to do something new and learning a new skill which writing comedy is. It can be tricky for people to get started and see any progress because most people are terrible at it when they start any new skill and comedy writing is no different." "if you don't love it, you'll never succeed at it because you need that love to propel you through those early years when you're stuck." Scott shares the story behind the story of how he got to know Weird Al, writing for Saturday Night live, being an entrepreneur, how to delegate creativity, growing your business at every level, and even parenting. At the core of this show, Mark & Scott get in-depth about why EFFORT is the key to Creativity, Skill, and Greatness at Every Level! Connect with Scott Dikkers here, check out his NY Times best selling books, his new podcast, and so much more here https://scottdikkers.com Scott Dikkers founded the world’s first humor website, TheOnion.com, in 1996. A few years earlier he helped found the original Onion newspaper. He’s served as The Onion’s owner and editor-in-chief, on and off, for much of the last quarter century. Scott co-wrote and edited The Onion’s first original book, Our Dumb Century, a look at recent history through front pages of The Onion. It's sold over a million copies, debuting as a #1 New York Times and #1 Amazon bestseller. He also co-wrote and edited The Onion’s second original book, Our Dumb World, a world atlas parody, which also debuted on the New York Times bestseller list. In the mid-2000’s, Scott headed up the creation of "The Onion News Network" web series, serving as a director and executive producer. The series gave rise to many viral videos and a TV series on IFC. The web shorts won a Peabody Award in 2008. Scott led The Onion’s rise from small, unknown college humor publication to internationally respected comedy brand. He gathered a talented team of writers and editors over the years, working with them to develop The Onion’s culture of creative freedom and brutal honesty, its distinct comic voice, and its reliable process for generating award-winning satire, day after day. This unique process is spelled out in Scott’s books, How to Write Funny, and the second in the series, How to Write Funnier, which are the basis of the Writing with The Onion program he created and teaches at The Second City Training Center in Chicago. Scott offers other courses and free resources for comedy writers on the How to Write Funny website. His work with The Onion, its website and other ancillary products, earned Scott the #43 spot on Time magazine’s list of the Top 50 “Cyber Elite” alongside such iconic figures as Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and George Lucas. Scott began his career in the entertainment business with his self-syndicated comic strip, Jim’s Journal. The popular college cartoon, comprised of little more than stick figures, spawned a self-published book collection that became a national bestseller. Rolling Stone magazine ranked “Jim” one of America’s top ten favorite writers in 1992. Scott continues to draw and animate cartoons under the banner of the Dikkers Cartoon Company. In addition to his other work, Scott is an accomplished voice actor who’s performed in many national commercials, video games and animated cartoons, including Saturday Night Live’s “TV Funhouse.” He’s also written and directed several award-winning short films, and two feature films, Spaceman, and Bad Meat. Colin Marshall sits down in Silver Lake with comedian, writer, and comedy writer Todd Levin, who's written for Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien, Conan, and the Onion News Network. They discuss using comedy performers as tools; the advantages of being a cipher; deliberately bewildering the audience, listening for reactions beyond laughter, and in the process becoming a connoisseur of silence; the comparative humorous possibilities of Tetley and Bigelow tea bag package copy; the inevitable and healthy decision to stop reading internet feedback on one's work; Conan O'Brien's coxcomb of hair; New York's inherent masochism, and Los Angeles' bus stops full of people who look just about to surrender; the pleasures of New York's crosstown buses and the agonies of its garbage trains; Los Angeles' lack of an excuse for shuffling around in flip-flops; his heightened suspicion of venues that aggressively promise good times, and what aggressive promises of laughter can do to comedy; the ultimately fruitless technique of reliable joke insertion, which reveals an anxiety to hold an audience's attention and in so doing loses that attention; that particular Conan O'Brien brand of delivering silliness and lasting memories at once; and the haunting question of telling which of your actions indicate maturity, and which indicate complacency.
