To mark Bookclub's 21st birthday Helen Fielding talks about her creation Bridget Jones, with the first novel in the series, Bridget Jones's Diary. Bridget has now become an iconic figure in modern fiction. Bridget Jones started life as a weekly column in the pages of The Independent in 1995, when Fielding worked on the news desk. Refusing to use her own byline, Helen’s column chronicled the life and antics of fictional Bridget Jones as a thirty-something single woman in London trying to make sense of life and love - and was published as a novel in 1996. Helen says in Bookclub that she honestly expected the column would be axed after six weeks for being too silly. She also describes how much she leaned on the plot of Pride and Prejudice, as in 1995 it seemed the whole country was watching the BBC adaptation with Colin Firth as Mr Darcy. Bridget eventually finds love with aloof lawyer Mark Darcy, who of course was played by Firth in the film of the novel. With fans from women in their twenties now to others in their fifties who lived the life of Bridget at the time, Helen answers questions about the identity of unmarried women in their thirties in the 1990s, with Bridget feeling as alone as Miss Havisham and how perceptions have changed since; as well as how Bridget would fare in this #MeToo, Instagram image obsessed and internet dating world. Recorded as part of the BBC's BBC Arts year-long celebration of literature, The Books That Shaped Us; and presented by James Naughtie and with a group of readers asking the questions. December's Bookclub choice : Leaving the Atocha Station by Ben Lerner (2012) Presented by James Naughtie Produced by Dymphna Flynn

This week on the show, Karen Peterson — co-host of the Citizen Dame Podcast and The Watch and Talk — joins us to discuss director Sharon Maguire's Bridget Jones's Diary. The 2001 romantic comedy, based on Helen Fielding's best-selling book, not only made Renee Zellweger a bonafide leading lady but earned the actress her first Academy Award nomination.  We'll discuss what makes the titular character (and Zellweger's performance) so memorable, how Maguire's film cleverly reinterprets Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice for the modern era and why Colin Firth's Mark Darcy is such a tricky role to pull off onscreen. Plus, is Hugh Grant's turn as the rascally Daniel Cleaver the prototype for his BAFTA-nominated performance in Paddington 2? Join us as we crack open Bridget Jones's Diary. Bridget Jones's Diary synopsis, courtesy of Miramax: Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is a busy journalist and singleton lost amid a sea of smug-marrieds in London. After vowing to abandon her many vices, Bridget turns over a new page by channeling her opinions and insecurities in a journal that becomes a hilarious chronicle of her misadventures. Soon, Bridget finds herself stuck in the sights of not one, but two men: her dashing boss Daniel (Hugh Grant), who thrives on bad behavior; and the brooding Mark (Colin Firth), who she despises but somehow can't get away from. Auctions. Bidding wars. Squealing agents and champagne toasts. To some, this is the stuff writerly dreams are made of. Novelist Rosie Walsh is here from her home in Britain to humbly share details of her magic carpet ride as the author of one of the most anticipated global publications this year. GHOSTED, Rosie’s debut book in America, celebrated its birthday the day we taped this episode. Pub day in the states! For a book that has sold in thirty-one countries and topped several bestseller lists already, I feel like the luckiest girl at the dance here to have had so much time—over an hour!—with this very busy new mother and author. I had to ask Rosie the age-old question: what makes a page-turner? How do you write a story people, and that includes publishers, can’t put down? Because, cover to cover, I was swept away by this book. As an example, check out this marketing hook right on the back: "Seven perfect days. Then he disappeared. A love story with a secret at its heart.” Aren’t you dying to know the secret? I was, and I’ll tell you this: I never saw it coming. Nor did my dear friend and one of my favorite writers, Aditi Khorana, our guest co-host for this episode. Aditi and Rosie are both critically acclaimed Penguin novelists, and I think you’ll love hearing them compare notes on how to outline their books and craft their exciting plot lines. Their publishing wins will inspire you and their stories on editing and ditching hard-won prose are a dose of realism. In fact, Rosie’s honesty—about what she was willing to do, make that what she had to do to get her words worthy of the heights they’re currently hitting—is astonishing. Mel Evans is joined by Jessica Kent and Rachel Grandi to discuss more modern "adaptations" of Jane Austen's works.  This episode, they plod their way through Helen Fielding's body dysmorphic novel "Bridget Jones's Diary." Is this a true Jane Austen adaptation or is it a martini-fueled fan letter to the BBC "Pride and Prejudice" mini-series?  We're not judging, we just want Bridget to love herself. An Hour with Your Ex is a Denver-based podcast hosted by Mark Colomb and Mel Evans. "Bridget Jones's Diary" is a 1996 novel by Helen Fielding made into a terrible 2001 film starring an actress Mel cares not to name.  This last bit is for SEO.

We take a look at the history of setting New Year's Resolutions, most popular goals, why they don't work and how to make them stick. We also celebrate the new year with a new and improved theme song! This episode's wine: Blanc de Bleu sparkling Chardonnay with blueberry This episode's cheese: Aged sharp white cheddar We turn 21 in this episode! Our podcast is finally old enough to drink, we guess! Aside from getting so excited over blue bubbly, we're stoked to be back! And we dive right in with our episode celebrating the promises we make (and break) to ourselves every year! Congratulations to our listener Hilary who won our "Tasting Wine & Cheese" giveaway! Emily lists the top New Year's Resolutions and breaks them down by gender, geography, and generation. She also takes this time to vent her frustrations at stereotypical young millennials, and lists the most broken resolutions and why they don't work. By the way, our drinking game for this episode is the phrase "YOLO" because we say it quite frequently, but always with a deep hatred for it. If you'd like some better words, check out our episode, Cheers to Words and Phrases! Why do we make resolutions? Clearly to torture ourselves! James gives us the actual history behind the tradition and gets into the science behind why resolutions are broken so often. We also come up with James' new pick-up line: giving a woman his numbers, as well as a pie. Look for him on Tinder -- he'll be the one with a picture of a pie. Why did Emily read the Wikipedia article about Star Wars: The Force Awakens before going to see the movie? She'll justify it -- go ahead and send us your gripes! She also gives a quick tip for saving some money over the year. And we get into another discussion about vaping (Check out our Cheers to Vaping episode!) James gives us some tips and tricks for accomplishing your goals. Emily's advice is if you don't try, you won't fail! And, you people on Facebook, you know who you are, posting about your gym experience right now -- talk to us in March! See the marshmallow test he talks about in our show notes! And, James tells us why "Bridget Jones's Diary" is a better movie than he expected. And now the world knows! Emily talks about the trend of picking a word or a few words to focus on for the year instead of making a resolution. You can find out more information about this idea by listening to episode 31 of The Productive Woman podcast. James debunks the myth that it takes 21 days for something to become a habit. Screenwriter Richard Curtis is a legend in romantic comedy writing -- Bridget Jones's Diary, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Love Actually to name a few. So, how did one amazing rom-com writer get to adapt a period drama about a boy separated from his horse during World War I? He got a call from Steven Spielberg, that's how. "I wanted to see if I could do it before I agreed to it," Curtis says of being asked to co-write War Horse, Spielberg's Christmas-opener, starring Jeremy Irvine and Emily Watson. The script is co-written by Lee Hall (Billy Elliot and Gabriel & Me), and adapted from the children's novel, of the same name, by Michael Morpurgo. The War Horse experience is one Curtis will always remember. Script sat down with the famed screenwriter to get some insight into his process. Podcast highlights: How to overcome writer's block ...
