With the UN reporting on acts of genocide in Gaza and the ongoing violent colonisation of multi-cultural, multi-religious and multi-ethnic Palestine continuing, a global understanding and response to the situation is vital.  Eight million of the 15 million Palestinians are refugees or displaced peoples, excluded from their historical homeland by Zionist leaders whose actions indicate the desire for an ethnically cleansed state. Professor Mazin Qumsiyeh joins the podcast and explains that despite the popular naming of the conflict as incredibly complex, the model is simply settler colonialism, the same motivation and mechanisms experienced by the Indigenous people of Australia. Professor Qumsiyeh is a Palestinian scientist and author, founder and Director of the Palestine Museum of Natural History and Palestine Institute of Biodiversity and Sustainability at Bethlehem University. Today we speak with publisher Judith Gurewich and translator Luke Leafgren about a remarkable first-person narrative by Nasser Abu Srour, a Palestinian political prisoner who in 1993 was given a life sentence. His memoir, The Tale of a Wall, tells of the author's decades-long life in multiple prisons, moving through many historical periods and shifting personal and political lives. The one thing that is always present is the figure of the wall, that becomes his one constant companion. Gurewich and Leafgren tell how they came to acquire the text, and how they came to know this remarkable man through it. The tale itself is a stunning and moving contribution to our understanding of the Palestinian struggle for liberation.Nasser Abu Srour was arrested in 1993, accused of being an accomplice to the murder of an Israeli intelligence officer, and sentenced to life in prison. While incarcerated, Abu Srour completed the final semester of a bachelor's degree in English from Bethlehem University, and obtained a master's degree in political science from Al-Quds University. The Tale of a Wall is his first book to appear in English. It will be published in the United Kingdom by Allen Lane, and translations are forthcoming from Gallimard, Feltrinelli, and Galaxia Gutenberg, among others. Judith Gurewich is the publisher of Other Press, a position she has held since 2002. Under her leadership, Other Press has become a highly respected and award-winning publisher of literary fiction and non-fiction, including titles such as Sarah Bakewell's How to Live: A Life of Montaigne, Kamel Daoud's The Meursault Investigation, and Raja Shehadeh's We Could Have Been Friends, My Father and I, a finalist for the 2023 National Book Award. Born in Canada and raised in Belgium, she holds a law degree from Brussels University as well as a master's of law from Columbia University and a PhD in sociology from Brandeis University. She now resides in Cambridge, MA. Judith is also a Lacanian trained psychoanalyst, practicing part-time.Luke Leafgren is an Assistant Dean of Harvard College, where he is also a lecturer in Comparative Literature and teaches courses on translation. He has published seven translations of contemporary Arabic novels and received the Saif Ghobash Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation in 2018 and 2023.

He highlights the current siege-like situation in the ghetto of Bethlehem in the occupied West Bank, before going on to discuss the numerous Israeli assaults in the West Bank and their context in international law. He notes the deleterious effects on Palestine's environment of colonization before turning his attention to Israel's attempt to starve out the trapped Palestinian people in Gaza. The rhetoric of Israel's leaders and the war crimes of its military lead him to an inescapable conclusion: the Israeli government is carrying out a genocidal campaign in the Gaza Strip.

The episode captures the tumultuous events in the Middle East, from potential invasions to the significant role of the US in the ongoing crisis.Roifield Brown introduces the episode by highlighting the escalating conflict in Israel and Palestine. He mentions the potential invasion of Gaza by Israel, which has mobilized its entire armored corps and called up 360,000 reservists. Amidst this tension, US officials are pressing Israel to delay its attack, hoping to negotiate the release of hostages held by Hamas. The situation worsened when a hospital was bombed, leading to over 500 casualties in Gaza. In the West Bank, Israeli forces have detained 120 Palestinians. As the situation escalates, over a million Palestinians have evacuated their homes in Gaza. US President Joe Biden's visit to Israel is also discussed, signaling his support for the state and potentially aiming to broker a deal to assist trapped Palestinian civilians.Dr. Ibrahim Haroub shares his perspective on the conflict, emphasizing the need for objectivity when addressing the Middle East crisis. He criticizes the US administration for not being fair in this crisis. He also mentions the aid package for Palestinians that President Biden is trying to broker. Dr. Haroub stresses the importance of stopping the war and the genocide against Palestinians. He also differentiates between terrorism and freedom fighters, emphasizing that ordinary Palestinian people are being killed on the ground.Adam, providing the Israeli perspective, talks about the mood of the Israeli people amidst the conflict. He mentions the trust in the military and the disappointment with Netanyahu. However, he believes that changing leadership in the middle of a crisis is not advisable. Adam also highlights the importance of President Biden's visit to Israel, which was a major boost for the Israeli people. The podcast recording also touches upon the actions of Hamas, with Daniel Bordman asking Dr. Haroub about specific war crimes and the events of October 7th. Dr. Haroub emphasizes the need for a two-state solution and peace agreement.Quotes:1. "You should be objective when you come to the Middle East and when you try to solve such a crisis, such a genocide against Palestinian people." - Dr. Ibrahim Haroub2. "I think that there's a strong degree of trust that the military will operate as it's supposed to, and that we're not at the point that we need to talk about changing the horse in midstream." - Adam Block3. Psychology and health care in PalestineIn this podcast episode I speak with Jumana Kaplanian about psychology in Palestine and the stigma about mental health that still exists in the Palestinian society. Jumana  holds a Bachelor's degree in Social Work and Psychology from Bethlehem University in Bethlehem and an MSc in Psychology from Oxford Brookes University in Oxford.Mental illness is considered one of the largest and least acknowledged health problems in Palestine. For decades the West Bank has suffered from political, social, and economic strife. Palestinians have been exposed to a series of traumatic events, such as imprisonment, torture, humiliation, human rights violations, house demolitions, land confiscation, restriction of movement, unemployment, and under-employment. As a result, many people suffer from various emotional and psychological traumas. The importance of psychological treatment in PalestineMental health service providers in Palestine usually offer support, rehabilitation, and counseling services for people dealing with psychological problems. Mainly, these organizations focus on counseling and treating the disorders rather than arming people with the required knowledge to realize the importance of psychological needs to seek treatment. In most cases, these organizations are the ones who approach people to offer help. In many other cases, people ignore their psychological distress for an extended period and only seek help when they reach advanced disorder stages. Awareness of mental health at Psychology SpaPsychology Spa works to raise awareness of mental health, fight social stigma, and achieve social transformation regarding mental health.   Psychology Spa is the first specialized non-profit company in Psycho education in Palestine since 2016. Palestinians have developed a number of creative, non-violent ways to challenge the brutal Israeli military occupation of Palestine. One of the more widely known forms of non-violent resistance is the BDS (Boycotts, Divestment & Sanctions) movement that was started in 2005 by about 150 Palestinian civil groups and joined by activists all around the world. When we spent a month in Palestine, based in Bethlehem, this past summer with the Holy Land Trust, one very innovative form of non-violent resistance came to our attention. We met Dr. Mazin & Jessie Qumsiyeh, who founded the Palestine Institute of Biodiversity and Sustainability and the Palestine Museum of Natural History that is associated with Bethlehem University. This 14 minute video is a talk by Dr. Qumsiyeh, given at the meeting of the Arab States Research and Education Network (ASREN) on Dec. 4, 2017. The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo. Professor Qumsiyeh’s paper dealt with challenges and opportunities for sustainable development in the 21st century with globalized systems. He highlighted the example of the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability at Bethlehem University in areas of research, education, and environmental conservation. As the only Palestinian speaker at this conference, Prof. Qumsiyeh took the opportunity to also highlight the issues of Israeli colonial policies that effect sustainability in Palestine.
