On this episode of Club + Resort Talks, Club + Resort Business Editor-in-Chief Rob Thomas and Senior Phil Keren discuss a recently completed project, one that is nearly finished and two more that are just beginning. The 18-month revitalization project at LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort in Naples, Fla. encompassed 189 of the resort's guest rooms, the complete rebuild and elevated design enhancements of the famed Beach House, and the restoration of its four beachside pools. Improvements were made to the resort's beachfront restaurant, beachside lounge, and poolside lounging area. “The completion of this extensive restoration marks a significant milestone for LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort,” says Martin Greenwood, Area Managing Director for the resort. Previously known as America's longest golf course, the Pines Course at The International in Bolton, Mass. is on schedule to welcome limited member play this fall. Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw are wrapping up the project they began in 2022. It is believed The Pines will be the first new 18-hole course to open in Massachusetts in more than a decade. The Pines will be one of the region's few courses to feature fescue grass on tees, fairways and in the rough. Fescue grass courses are typically found in Scotland and Ireland, places where the game was first played.Other final project tasks include installing new bunker sand, edging perimeters of bunkers, trimming and clearing trees, and establishing fairway/rough lines. After a century of operation, the Swope Memorial golf course in Kansas City plans to close for a year to undergo a $7 million renovation. There is a proposal before Kansas City's City Council for the project. If approved, plans include rebuilding the tee boxes, cart paths, and greens, installing a new drainage system, and filling the bunkers with firmer sand. Some greens will be less steep, and others will be wider. They will also renumber certain holes to improve the pace of play. A significant number of trees will be removed to improve playability and turf health by increasing sunlight and airflow. Burning Tree Country Club in Greenwich, Conn. intends to revamp its infrastructure by replacing the old pool building with a modern facility dubbed the Aquatics and Recreation Center. The current paddle tennis building will make way for a new structure and additional features outlined in the proposal include an open-air poolside bar.
Brad Klein talks with Bob Farren, CGCS, of Pinehurst Resort about his 40-plus-year career at the 10-course property in the North Carolina Sandhills. Their discussion traces the progression of the property in general and specifically the storied history of Pinehurst's famed No. 2 course that was built by Donald Ross a century ago. Pinehurst No. 2 transformed throughout its history as a favorite course of the USGA from its original design to a tree-lined course with narrow fairways to the rustic gem it is today after the restoration by the architectural team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. Finally, the discussion includes Pinehurst's role with the USGA, what is next for the property and its role with Sandhills Community College in helping groom the next generation of golf course superintendents.

On this episode of the Club + Resort Talks podcast, Rob Thomas speaks with Jonathan Fralick, VP, Racquet Sports for Invited Clubs. Fralick discusses a number of programs across the Invited portfolio, including two grow-the-game initiatives — First Serve and Right Start. First Serve is a comprehensive junior pathway to ensure organization, player development and member enjoyment with clear goals and proven developmental success. The Right Start program is designed for entry-level adults interested in learning or returning to tennis and pickleball, successfully building a community of players who learn and develop together in a social setting. Fralick also talked about inclusivity, technology and speculated on what the future may hold for racquet sports across the club space. Thomas was also joined by Senior Editor Phil Keren. The two discussed some of the latest news from Club + Resort Business, such as three new short courses. Officials at Streamsong Golf Resort in Bowling Green, Fla. say all 19 holes on its fourth golf course, The Chain, will open for preview play March 31. The short course, which was designed by the world-renowned duo of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, brings a new concept to the golf offerings at the resort with options for six and 13-hole loops or a 19-hole round. “When you take strength and length out of the equation, golf becomes much more fun for a vastly expanded group of players,” Coore says. Work is continuing on the construction of the nine-hole Clover golf course at Killearn Club in Tallahassee, Fla. The course will be walking-only and will offer five par-3 holes of varying lengths and four short par-4 holes. MacCurrach Golf Construction of Jacksonville, Fla. continues to execute construction with Aqua Turf International, responsible for the redesigned irrigation system. Construction is expected to conclude in May. Also, golf course architect Tom Clark goes behind the scenes of The Battlefield at Oklahoma's Shangri-La Resort—a 3,000-yard, par-54 layout with more than 100 feet of elevation change. Each hole on The Battlefield is named in honor of an Oklahoma veteran of World War II.

Lee Pace is a Chapel Hill, North Carolina based author, editor, publisher and broadcaster who has spent the last thirty years writing about golf in the Carolinas and beyond. He visited the Paradise in the Pines podcast to talk about his being in residence as a writer at the Weymouth Center and the James Boyd House in Southern Pines, NC and his passion for golf, writing and the Pinehurst area. He believes like many that golf is best experienced via foot, the old-fashioned way—walking with a light-weight and simple carry bag slung over the shoulder. Toward that end, Pace authored a book, "Good Walks" on the joys of walking and playing golf. That book includes stories about walking some of the best courees in the Carolinas including Pinehurst No. 2, The Country Club of North Carolina, Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club and several others. He has written four books about the golf heritage of Pinehurst Resort & Country Club, most recently the 2012 volume The Golden Age of Pinehurst—The Rebirth of No. 2, which chronicles the evolution of architect Donald Ross's tour de force and the restoration program of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw from 2010-11. Pace is a 1979 graduate of the University of North Carolina, and when not trying to break eighty on the golf course writes about the Tar Heel football team through his Extra Points feature that appears regularly on Goheels.com. He has also been the sideline reporter since 2004 for the Tar Heel Sports Network. Pace and wife Sue, a talented graphic designer, teamed to produce and publish a coffee-table book on Kenan Stadium in 2016 entitled Football in a Forest—The Life and Times of Kenan Stadium. @Pinehurst Resort @Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities #goodwalks @UNCTarHeelsAthletics #homeofamericangolf #pinehurst #southernpinesnc

Andy and Garrett then launch into a wide-ranging discussion of Bandon Trails' (many) strengths and (few) weaknesses. They cover, among other things, their favorite green-to-tee transitions, the controversy around the 14th hole, and the course's similarities to Saving Private Ryan, The Princess Bride, and Bruce Bowen. Blue is known for its dramatic start, with the first tee atop a large sand dune. It is also known for its large, bold green complexes. Over the next several weeks, we plan to record deep-dive discussions for all five 18-hole courses at Bandon Dunes. First up, in reverse-chronological order: Sheep Ranch. Before it was officially part of the resort, Sheep Ranch was a free-form course on which players could choose their own routings. Its 13 greens were designed by Tom Doak and the team at Renaissance Golf Design. When owners Mike Keiser and Phil Friedman decided to incorporate Sheep Ranch into Bandon Dunes, they hired Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw to transform it into a traditional 18-hole layout. Andy Johnson and Garrett Morrison discuss the course's history and evolution before giving their assessment of its current design. (Spoiler: they like it.) Our Bandon Deep Dives are brought to you by Zero Restriction.
We begin with the 2-time Masters Champion in the 18th fairway of the final round of his emotional Masters win in 1995. He tells of his enduring love of his long-time caddie, Carl Jackson and how Carl's perceptive eye spotted a swing flaw that turned Ben's game around that week. Ben recounts his favorite U.S. Open and Open Championship experiences and venues. We cover the 1999 Ryder Cup “Battle at Brookline”, with history again coming down to the 17th hole with Justin Leonard's improbable putt and the ensuing melee. He discusses his special partnership with Bill Coore and their impressive body of work to-date. Ben chooses where he would take his one career mulligan and what he would do differently, knowing what he now knows. Ben Crenshaw generously shares his story, “FORE the Good of the Game.”

As we kick off Season 2 of The Fire Pit Podcast, just a short reflection on where we’ve been since March, 2020, which is when, while in quarantine, we hatched the idea of this podcast. Our first, which aired on what would’ve been Masters Sunday of last year, was the story of how and why John Ashworth caddied at the ’86 Masters for his childhood friend, Mark Wiebe. One interview led to the next, Zoom calling with Nicklaus, Griffey Jr., Walter Iooss, Fred Couples, Jim Nantz, Ben Crenshaw, Bill Coore, Mike Keiser, David Kidd and so many more, and here we are again, with an expanded Fire Pit Collective but the same objective, which is to tell compelling stories. As for the story we tell today—a trip to LaTrobe to sit with The King—it’s one of my favorites, but it’s bittersweet. The events that took place U.S. Open week at Oakmont in 2016 which afforded Gary Williams, Damon Hack and I to not only have lunch with Arnold Palmer, but to get time with him in his office, now all seems like a dream. What you’ll hear is that story. And you’ll listen to phone footage from that day that I’ve only shared with a select few in small settings. Plus, Gary Williams, Damon Hack, Doc Giffin and Bob Ford will add their perspectives. Not to mention Arnold Palmer, who tells his Roger Maris story one more time. We’re back, and as we continue a short hiatus between seasons one and two of The Fire Pit, we continue to go through our first season of recordings and extract some relevant nuggets or unpublished stories from our distinguished list of guests.
