After allowing Bill O’Brien to snip, then slit, then gut, and finally immolate the Texans roster, Houston brought in an actual general manager in New England Patriots super genius Nick Caserio. All of that brain power knows things the rest of the NFL doesn’t know. That Kamu Gruiger-Hill is actually an all-star coverage linebacker, Kevin Pierre-Louis is actually better than Jon Bostic and Cole Holcomb, that Terrance Mitchell is ready to break out at age 29, and Derek Rivers is more than just a recipient of a Jack Easterby wedding ceremony. He’s smarter than you, he’s smarter than the rest of the NFL, and don’t you doubt him one bit, because he’s the man who will build the next great football team, because he, and only he, knows that Maliek Collins belongs on magazine covers and not the waiver wire. On this episode of Battle Red Radio, Matt Weston, Carlos Flores, and Joe Critz review the first three days of the 2021 NFL offseason. Topics include: the trades Nick Caserio made to actually bring in talent, the long list of non-playable characters Nick Caserio signed, getting excited about Maliek Collins and Christian Kirksey, the Tyrod Taylor era, remaining free agents the Texans can still target, and, of course, your beautiful and perfect listener questions. That’s Some Cheese is back for episode 95. Karl Heiser makes his debut on the show. Karl needed some air time and it was past due that we got him on. It’s Super Bowl week and the only thing I can think about is Deshaun Watson. I have an opening rant about how I feel like Watson right now dealing with these clueless, incompetent, and delinquent interns that we have. Football is a team game. Vendetta Sports Media is a team game. I need more JJ Watt’s and less Bill O’Brien’s on my team. Karl and I then dive into Super Bowl topics and finish up with baseball. On today's show, Jason brings you a full recap of Alabama's blowout win over Ohio State in the College Football Playoff championship game. The Crimson Tide won by 28 points – and it really wasn’t even that close as they dominated in all facets of the game. In fact, Jason argues that games like prove that we’d all be better off with an expanded College Football Playoff format. Jason also discusses whether or not this Alabama squad is really the greatest team in college football history, and if Nick Saban can rehabilitate yet another down-on-his-luck coaching candidate now that former Houston Texans coach Bill O’Brien appears set to take over as offensive coordinator next season. Later, Jason does a deep dive on the game’s biggest stars – Alabama wide receiver Devonta Smith and Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields – and tells us what we should expect from them at the next level. Both players are destined to go in the top 10, but are we sure that both are destined to become NFL stars? The answer may surprise you. Finally, Jason closes the show by sharing his thoughts on the Philadelphia Eagles’ peculiar decision to fire head coach Doug Pederson on Monday. Did they forget that he won them a Super Bowl just 3 years ago? Something doesn’t smell right; You don’t get rid of a Super Bowl coach that quickly unless there’s more going on behind the scenes. All signs point to Pederson becoming the ‘fall guy’ for someone in the front office. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers

Die Saison für die Miami Dolphins ist zu Ende. Leider. Stay Tuned & Fins Up!

Horns up! Und bleibt gesund...
Two weeks ago we thought we found the bottom, the dumbest possible way the Houston Texans could lose to the Indianapolis Colts had been found. Nick Martin scuffling a snap across the turf while simultaneously missing his block giving Grover Stewart a path to the ball couldn’t be topped. Then this week happen. The same thing. The same situation again. It wasn’t a question of if the Texans would lose, but how dumb they would do it. Somehow, they nearly surpassed their previous buffoonery. Keke Coutee was tackled from behind after breaking a tackle and turning up to tie the game, only to be stripped, and for the Colts to recover in the endzone. The bottom is infinite. There are no limits to the misery the soul can experience, or, in this case, our favorite football team can inflict upon those who dare to love it. On this episode of Battle Red Radio, Matt Weston, bigfatdrunk, and Scott, discuss Houston’s newest stupid loss to the Colts while simultaneously envisioning the future. Topics include: where this loss ranks in the history of dumb losses to the Colts, why Deshaun Watson has had so much success against the Colts this year, my emergency room visits resulting from having a little too much Kahale Warring, how long it will take for nature to heal itself in the post Bill O’Brien wasteland this team travels upon, chad hansen, Tyrell Adams inter dimensional space travel, and, of course, your beautiful and perfect listener questions. Andre Johnson has 1,062 career receptions, 14,185 receiving yards, and 70 touchdowns, he was named to 7 Pro Bowls and 2 All-Pro teams, and won two playoff games over the course of his 14 year NFL career, but despite all of his accomplishments, he had never been on Battle Red Radio. That changed today. On this episode of Battle Red Radio, I spoke with Andre Johnson about what it’s like playing through a tough season like the one Houston is going through, the jealousy he has for Texans wide receivers who get to play with Deshaun Watson, A.J. Brown comparisons, if there is anyone else he wished he punched, the difference in the coaching styles between Gary Kubiak and Bill O’Brien, future coaching desires, and a current offense that he would love to be able to play in. Bill O’Brien draws a circle. Matt Patricia draws a circle. Within each circle they think upon their failures as a head coach with the Houston Texans and the Detroit Lions. In the center is a long list that includes: running off talent, lack of player development, making decisions in the name of a bland puritan culture that doesn’t win football games, playing to their opponent, possession football, and round pegs in square holes. These two franchises are kindred spirits in misery. Each one suffering similar fates, to different extents, at the northern and southern regions of our country, and each one playing football in the cellar during the 2020 NFL season. On this episode of Battle Red Radio, Matt Weston and Chris Perfett of Pride of Detroit discuss the Texans-Lions Thanksgiving game. Topics include: defenestration, life in the cellar, previous Lions-Texans match ups, Detroit’s failure to ESTABLISH THE RUN, life without Kenny Golladay on the field, Deshaun Watson’s performance against another terrible pass defense, feeling better about the DeAndre Hopkins trade, and what the Matt Patricia era and the Bill O’Brien era have in common. A year ago, we were staring at another New England v. Houston loss. Then magic happened. Bradley Roby picked off Tom Brady. Deshaun Watson hit Kenny Stills on a deep touchdown after Will Fuller dropped one. DeAndre Hopkins and Watson ran the cocktail napkin trick play. And New England’s wide receivers were so bad, that even Houston could play man coverage against them. That was fun. That was a better time. My favorite time from the Bill O’Brien era, an era that has erupted into complete cataclysm, extinction, no past, no future. Hopefully next year will be better. Topics include the emptiness behind Antonio Brown’s eyes, a look at the current playoff picture, a fun movie for Steph Stradley, New England’s rugby team against the league’s worst run defense, what’s ailing Baltimore, Gary turning Dalvin into the top running game back in the game, and Jamies Winston understanding that you shouldn’t always be yourself. This week on BSTP, the fellas react to the "Hail Murray" play in Arizona. Plus, it's Jameis Time, Harden wants to go to BK, CP3 headed to Pheonix, and a lot more NBA and NFL talk
Andrew Brandt, former Packers VP/MMQB Columnist/Business of Sports Podcast, joins the show to talk Packers, NFL trade deadline and more. What was his experience at the trade deadline as a front office member? How do prioritize different players and deals when working on the salary cap? How much will the salary cap be affected by the pandemic? How do you value a running back compared to a left tackle when choosing who to pay? Can the Packers win a Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers on a hefty contract?
This offseason the Texans got actively worse. They turned DeAndre Hopkins, the league’s best wide receiver into Brandin Cooks, David Johnson, and kind of Ross Blacklock; they lost Tashaun Gipson and D.J. Reader; they only added Eric Murray to one of the worse pass defenses in the league, and they continued to invest in the offense in free agency, after cutting their torso in half to do so. As a result, the team is 1-6, and they lost the final season of Deshaun Watson’s rookie contract thanks to their own self mutilation. The good news is still they have Deshaun Watson, and that’s all they need, all they ever needed, and one day they’ll be a good football team again because of that alone. On this episode of Battle Red Radio, Matt Weston, TIM, and Rivers McCown, review the decisions Bill O’Brien and Jack Easterby made preceding this season, what to enjoy and watch for during the remainder of the Texans 2020 season, and what lies past this season for our favorite football team. Topics include: revisiting the Hopkins trade, which glue factory David Johnson will be sent to, an Anthony Weaver performance review, the developmental changes Houston can make now to get the most out of the 2020 season, a possibly non-existent trade deadline fire sale, and Houston’s upcoming leadership search.
