Lew Bryson is on the show this week. He's a long-time writer in the beer and whisky space, a voice of reason, and honestly just a force of good and positivity in an otherwise dreary world.I've been fortunate to call Bryson a friend for the better part of 20 years now. As a writer starting off in the beer space he was one of a few that was generous with his time, advice, and expertise. That's not a unique to me experience. Lew has helped so many better understand drinks and culture. He's kind and intelligent with the kind of resume that can only come with being among the very best. He was managing editor of Whisky Advocate magazine for 20 years. He is the author of Tasting Whiskey, and Whiskey Master Class, and writes a column for Craft Spirits Magazine. His work has appeared in countless publications, including a long stint in All About Beer. Bryson is a Kentucky Colonel, and a member of The Order of The Writ, an honorary association of the bourbon industry. He lives in central Pennsylvania, which is the topic of his podcast, “Seen Through A Glass." – a show you should tune into regularly. A few months back we were approached by Rich Colli of Varga Bar to do an event for Philly Beer Week. It was great fun, pouring and talking about whisky and beer. Before all that we sat down at Victory Brewing in Philly, to talk about writing, careers, home bars, and more. Looking at the craft beer landscape he believed there was void for a light beer. The idea for a Philly brand was born. His experience in sales and marketing is helping to launch a light beer that is packed with flavor. Kenwood Original is named for the street that Matt lived on for the first 15 years of his life. Death to Smoochy is a black comedy about the ills of child television programming and its clear exploitation of kids for monetary gain. The concept is ripe for the picking. Sadly, Death to Smoochy's execution of it is lacking. Neither funny, nor particularly compelling, its a movie devoid of all the essential ingredients of a good comedy. The characters—played at least with enthusiasm by Robin Williams as Rainbow Randolph and Edward Norton, the titular Smoochy—are generally unlikeable. Randolph, who goes through a sort of awakening after losing his prime TV spot, just sort of sucks; and considering none of his self-reflection ever involves acknowledging he was fired for good reason, I'm not sure the point of it. Throw in a needless and bizarre romance angle, multiple mob sub-plots, Jon Stewart's weird haircut, and a character whose brain damage is played for laughs, and you get one of the more mediocre enterprises of the early 2000s. Hence why it flopped, earning $8.3 million on a budget of $50 million (Why was it that high?); and why it earned poor reviews, 42% on Rotten Tomatoes with 119 of them. Anyway, there are a couple of good jokes. So, sit back, plot revenge while sipping a Brotherly Love Hazy IPA from Victory Brewing, and remember: Your stepdad isn't mean ... He's just adjusting! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla are all auditioning to be backup skaters in Smoochy on Ice! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – It's a kids show... with gangsters, bribery, and corruption! (00:00) Lingering Questions – The Double Turn Podcast has a Tornado Tag versus Smoochy and Rainbow Randolph, and then we discuss how a Robin Williams movie could be so unfunny. Fans of the franchise, like us, now doubt had high hopes for Shane Black's The Predator. Black, who'd appeared in the original as Hawkins and even served as a script doctor on set, is a legend of action movie scriptwriting. The Predator, unfortunately, fails in almost every way. The humor is overwritten and overstuffed; the characters are thin and generally unlikeable; the plot makes no sense; and the scars of tumultuous reshoots are painfully evident. The third act seems to connect to an entirely different movie. That makes sense because they did have to reconfigure the whole thing after poor test screenings. But, it renders The Predator a film with no identity. Hence why it failed to reignite the franchise. It earned just $160.5 million on a budget of $88 million; and its reviews were scathing. At 33% on Rotten Tomatoes with 296 of them, this was not the return to form fans were hoping for. It is gory, though, so that's a plus. Now, sit back, evolve your tastebuds with a Summer Love Ale from Victory Brewing, and never play fetch with the Predator's dog! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla are on prison transport bus to the loony bin. This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – You'll never see him coming. This week, my guest is Bill Covaleski. He's the brewmaster and co-founder of Victory Brewing Company. This year, Bill and co-founder Ron Barchet are celebrating 25 years of Victory. As someone who has successfully built and run a business for 25 years, Bill drops a lot of knowledge, and I think it's beneficial whether you are running your own business, or have employees that report to you.Bill talks about how he got into brewing, and the decision to start a brewery with his best friend Ron Barchet. We talk about trends in the industry, discussing everything from beer styles, to seltzers and non-alcoholic beer. In 2016 Victory became part of Artisanal Brewing Ventures, which also includes Southern Tier Brewing and Sixpoint Brewery. I asked Bill about that decision, and if he worried about being considered a sellout for becoming part of “big beer”. Also, this week I'm doing something different. I wanted to work on some exclusive recipes using Victory beer. For this, I partnered with blogger Marilyn Johnson from the blog Philly Grub. The first recipe is scrapple tacos with an apple/fennel/celery slaw, and served with an aji panca salsa using Victory's Prima Pils. The second recipe is Oktoberfest Beer Truffles, using Utz pretzels and Victory's Festbier. Head over to PhillyGrub.blog to find these exclusive recipes. Looking to hire employees for your restaurant? Victory founder Bill Covaleski and Ron Barchet talk 25 years of Victory Beers After 25 years, Victory Brewing isn't slowing down. They're goal to Brew Forward means they're doubling down on quality, commitment, and community. As we talk with founder Bill Covaleski and Ron Barchet we discovered what it means to be a successful brewer. Barchet is once again able to homebrew. That's success, growing to a point where you don't have to be on the brew deck all the time and can finally enjoy a homebrew. He's done it up right, too. His barn is designed for brewing, with the drains and all, plus a 1 Hectoliter (around 25 gallons) brewhouse. That's how you do it. Victory's Brother Love IPA is a tasty brew and we learn more about that beer and its mission. We talk about what it was like 25 years ago, what they think of today's brewing scene, and what they see in their crystal ball for the next 25 years. We sip some of that Brotherly Love and some Sour Monkey. And Brian brings the heat with a vintage bottle of 2015 Sour Monkey. Good times. #drinkyourcellar
We are back on our corporate tip. We are joined this week by head brewer from Victory Brewing, Richie Tevlin. We are talking about what went in to brewing a Hazy IPA for mass distribution, how Richie ended up at Victory, opening up a new location in Philadelphia, and Richie brought us a bunch of research and development beers for us to try. Grizzly is a bonkers Jaws rip-off that wasn’t as horrible as you might think it would be. My guess is that Pete’s entertaining 6-minute synopsis may have softened the casts view. The cast throws up a little in their collective mouths after reminiscing about our poor choices of college beers. “Anything Ice. blech” – Troy … Continue reading "EP048 – Grizzly (1976)"

This episode is an absolute smorgasbord of sweet and sour beers, pairing off 2) Epic Brewing’s Brainless Raspberries (nominated by Dave) vs 7) Victory Brewing Company’s Sour Monkey (nominated by Adam). These two high ABV workhorses are not for the faint of heart, but they do wonders to the tastebuds. Dylan and Jake crown a winner to advance into the bracket of wildest dreams.
The boys open the episode a review of the Hazelwood Live Brewery event. They cover a great weekend in College football and Beer one is the Golden Monkey from Victory Brewing. Chris takes a shot at the NCAA for their inconsistency in their transfer policy. Beer two is a rainbow sherbet ale that gets some surprising scores from the boys. They cover Carole Baskin being on dancing with the stars with a debate that arises between her and Joe Exotic. The show finishes with some coverage of playoff baseball.
