Send us a textSteve Smith of the Vapors stops by to discuss their latest release, Wasp in the Jar, their upcoming tour, and their longevity career. *****Best known for their massive 1980 worldwide hit “Turning Japanese,” The Vapors continue to bring their individually styled brand of music to fans old and new in the form of high-quality live performances and the ongoing development of critically acclaimed new material. The band, formed in 1979, had already gained a substantial live following around their hometown of Guildford, Surrey and in London, when they were brought to large UK audiences with their support slot on The Jam's iconic 1979 “Setting Sons” tour, by then managed by The Jam's Bruce Foxton and Paul Weller's father John. The release of debut single “Prisoners” in 1979 was followed by 1980's “Turning Japanese “alongside the classic first album New Clear Days. The single reached Number 3 in the UK, Number 1 in Australia, and hit the top 10 in both New Zealand and Canada whilst becoming a mainstream Billboard Top 40 hit in the US. The debut album spawned further hits “News At Ten” and” Waiting for the Weekend” before the very different, but equally well received second album “Magnets” arriving in 1981, providing the singles “Spiders” and further hit “Jimmie Jones”, with the band touring extensively in the UK, US and Australia throughout this period. The band parted company late in 1981, with all members going on to have varied and successful careers across the entertainment industry. In 2016, after a decade of Internet clamour for a revival, they announced their reformation for a short series of gigs, including a sell-out show at London's Dingwalls. Over 170 gigs and 2020's comeback album third album Together and several singles later, they're stronger and more relevant than ever. The band continue to write and perform and have completed two headline tours in the UK since the pandemic, as well as appearing at the Pasadena Rose Bowl's “Cruel World” festival in May 2023, touring the US in 2024 and recording their exciting statement fourth album Wasp In A Jar (to be released on 28th February 2025). They continue to deliver polished shows featuring songs spanning their entire 45-year history. I would like to apologize in advance for my utter failure to mount a proper tribute to The Jam's Rick Buckler on very short notice. Upon hearing news of Rick's passing, I'd planned on playing the widely discussed “fan club” aka boot of ‘In The City' solely featuring Buckler's isolated drum tracks (‘Mo Rick, Mo Problems') but either it's gone missing or this place is an absolute tip (most likely the latter). I'd mentioned this on air and someone kindly offered to bring round their copy of the isolated drum tracks from ‘Setting Sons', which, y'know, in a pinch would have to do. As it turns out, however, this record was actually Bruce Foxton's isolated bass tracks from ‘Setting Sons' which would not be appropriate for this somber occasion.
The Vapors are a British new wave and power pop band best known for their 1980 hit “Turning Japanese.” Formed in 1978 in Guildford, England, the band was discovered by Bruce Foxton of The Jam, who helped secure them a management deal. With a sound that blended punchy punk energy and melodic hooks, The Vapors quickly gained attention in the UK music scene.Their debut album, New Clear Days (1980), featured “Turning Japanese,” a song that became an international success, particularly in the U.S. and Australia. Though often misinterpreted, the song's catchy riff and emotional intensity made it a defining anthem of the new wave era. The album also included other notable tracks like “News at Ten” and “Waiting for the Weekend.”Despite their early success, the band struggled with commercial momentum, and their second album, Magnets (1981), showcased a darker, more mature sound. Songs like “Jimmie Jones” tackled deeper themes, but the album failed to achieve the same level of popularity. By 1982, The Vapors disbanded, becoming one of many bands from the era known as one-hit wonders. After a decades-long hiatus, The Vapors reunited in 2016, playing live shows and eventually releasing a third album, Together, in 2020. Their legacy remains tied to the energy and innovation of the early new wave movement, with “Turning Japanese” still resonating in pop culture today.
Baxie speaks with Steve Smith of The Vapors! While most people remember The Vapors for their classic New Wave hit “Turning Japanese” (1980), their two studio albums were loaded with great songs that deserved equal attention. In 2016 The Vapors reformed after a 35-year hiatus. And this March they will release their latest album “Wasp in a Jar”. And it's exceptionally good! Steve talks about the new record, being discovered by Bruce Foxton from The Jam, and about getting back in the road. The Vapors will be coming to the Bosch Theater at the Wang Center in. Boston on August 1st as part of the Lost 80's Live tour—-which includes Big Country, Flock of Seagulls, General Public, Josie Cotton, Belouis Some, and China Crisis! Coming Monday on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and on the Rock102 app! Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicopee!

On this episode of The Paul Weller Fan Podcast, I chat with Bob Manton and 'Just Jeff' Shadbolt from Purple Hearts. Formed in 1978, they were a mod-influenced band that blended elements of post-punk, new wave, and mod revival, creating a distinct and energetic sound that resonated with a wide audience beyond the confines of the mod scene. We talk about their discovery of The Jam as punk loving teenagers in Essex, to the creation of their first band The Sockets and an original punk rock opera inspired by a NME cartoon strip that poked fun of Paul, Bruce and Rick...That band turned into Purple Hearts and a more mod-influenced sound, which, thanks largely to The Jam, was beginning to capture public attention. The band even went on to support The Jam in 1981 - and Paul Weller even produced and played on a couple of songs for what would have been their second album...As you'll hear on the podcast, whilst they were often associated with the mod scene, Purple Hearts transcended categorization, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of their audience that continues to beat strong over four decades later. Their unique blend of music and passion for mod culture set them apart, making them not just a mod band, but a band that truly loved and embodied the mod spirit. For the latest news on the band - head to their Facebook group here...The BandBob's distinct vocals and Jeff's skilled bass-guitar work formed the foundation of the band's sound with guitarist, Simon Stebbing and Gary Sparks on drums. Their partnership went beyond just musical collaboration – it was a meeting of minds that allowed Purple Hearts to craft songs that resonated deeply with their audience. The FansPurple Hearts' connection with their audience wasn't just ephemeral; it was deeply personal and lasting. The band's lyrics spoke to the realities of everyday life, love, and the struggles of youth, resonating with fans across generations. Their relatable songs weren't confined to a specific time or place, giving them a timeless appeal that continues to draw listeners in. This connection wasn't solely about the music; it was about sharing experiences and emotions that have universal relevance. The Weller ConnectionPurple Hearts signed to Chris Parry's Fiction Records label in 1979.You may remember Chris from Episode 76 as the man who signed The Jam to Polydor!.When that deal came to an end, Paul Weller produced a couple of demos for the band - also playing and providing backing vocals on Plane Crash and Concrete Mixer. In February 1981, Purple Hearts supported The Jam on tour dates at Sheerwater Youth Club Woking, Norwich University, Nottingham University and Crawley Leisure Centre. Bob and Jeff also mentioned Brighton, although I haven't managed to find a live date in 1981 for that in the archives.... do let me know people!Photo on the cover - Martyn Goddard (Podcast Guest 41) also took the shot for the cover of their single "My Life's a Jigsaw" on Safari Records. In 2021, Bob and Jeff created PH2 (Internationally known as Purple Hearts 2) and released a couple of new singles - Produced, Engineered and Mixed by Steve Cradock - 1974 / You Can't Tell Me Lies and Urban Soul / Livin' in the 70's.In a further link with The Jam , you can see Purple Hearts on the road in 2023 and 2024 supporting Bruce Foxton and Russell Hasting's From The Jam... Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Dominic Green. Dom is a historian and columnist, and he used to be a musician. He is a contributor to the Wall Street Journal and a columnist for the Washington Examiner and Jewish Chronicle. Check him out on Twitter at @DrDominicGreen.Dominic's Music Pick: The JamIn some ways, this is one of the most necessary episodes of Political Beats ever. In other ways, this is one of the most obscure episodes of Political Beats ever. So come on in, Smithers-Jones, take a seat and a weight off your feet, because I've some news to tell you: The Jam is the most important and consequential British rock group that nobody outside of music nerds and record store clerks in America even knew existed. Paul Weller (guitar, vocals, primary songwriting), Bruce Foxton (bass, vocals, secondary songwriting), and Rick Buckler (drums) formed the late Seventies U.K. punk era's greatest power trio by explicitly patterning themselves off of the "straight lines" musical attack of mid Sixties mod-era Pete Townshend and The Who. They then almost immediately began to develop an approach that, by the time of All Mod Cons (1978), had evolved into a unique musical and lyrical response to the massive societal upheaval and displacement of the early Thatcher era. Even as The Jam sought and achieved universal critical acclaim and commercial success in Great Britain -- Paul Weller would later be dubbed "The Modfather" by '90s U.K. Britpop bands such as Oasis, Blur, and Teenage Fanclub -- their legacy failed to translate nearly anywhere else, and particularly to the United States. It's no mystery as to why: The Jam's lyrics and themes (driven by Weller) were uniquely British in a way few other top-tier rock artists' had been since the heyday of Ray and Dave Davies with the Kinks in the late Sixties. But these themes are nevertheless emotionally universal and humane, and the music? Oh, the music, my friends. If you are a Brit or a Jam fan of long-standing, then prepare for a delightful stroll through one mind-blowing punk, power-pop, or even string-laden art-rock memory after another. If you are new to The Jam -- and we must assume that many of you are -- prepare to be mowed down by a youth explosion as one pop masterpiece after another is brought to your attention for the first time. Some people might get some pleasure out of hate but you? You've enough already on your plate with this episode. Click play, and soon you'll be going underground.

It's a huge honour to be able to bring you this podcast chat as I'm joined by The Jam legend, Bruce Foxton. A man whose bass lines, and style of playing, are amongst some of the most recognisable on the planet. Often identifiable after just a few notes. Down at the Tube Station at Midnight, In The Crowd, The Eton Rifles, Funeral Pyre, Pretty Green, Going Underground... I could easily go on... We hear how he joined the band - a line up of Paul Weller, Rick Buckler and Steve Brookes in 1974 and his viewpoint on the band's incredible journey through live gigs and studio recordings to their huge success and, quite rightly, a whole heap of moments that he is massively proud of. We also get the story of the band's split in 1982 from his point of view and the subsequent recording and release of his first solo album - Touch Sensitive - in 1984. I was lucky enough to be in the audience when Bruce joined Paul Weller's solo show in 2010 for a very special night at London's Royal Albert Hall so hearing the story of the reconnection of their friendship after so many years of no communication was fascinating. We also chat about From The Jam and the new Bruce Foxton and Russell Hastings album The Butterfly Effect which is set for release on Friday October 28th. Ahead of Tuesday's Drive I was joined by Bruce Foxton and Russel Hostings of From The Jam. After The Jam split, bassist Bruce Foxton formed From The Jam to continue touring the band's huge hits and since joining forces Foxton & Hastings have released two studio albums. It was great to chat to both of them ahead of their third studio album, The Butterfly Effect. We covered all sorts from what it's like playing The Jam's hits live, how a Covid induced touring break lead them to the studio and what we've got to look forward to in the new album. Plus a top tip for drying a wet phone and a few thoughts on the charts and modern radio. Lula by Foxton & Hastings is out now. Click here to listen on Spotify. The new album ‘The Butterfly Effect' is due out on 28th October 2022.
A different kind of episode this week with The Jam drummer, Rick Buckler. This recording was taken from a Q&A event in August 2022 at St Peters, Brighton for the This is the Modern World exhibition... Rick was one-third of the powerhouse sound of The Jam along with Paul Weller and Bruce Foxton. The band had 18 consecutive UK Top 40 singles from their debut in 1977 to their break-up in December 1982, including four No 1 hits. Guy Pratt has been a crucial member of the rhythm section of megastars such as Pink Floyd, David Gilmour, Robert Palmer, Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, Jimmy Page, David Coverdale, Womack & Womack, and The Smiths. And when he's not been parading his talents live on the stages of every stadium, concert hall and festival around the world, he has been a favourite studio bassist and accompanying singer for the biggest recording artists including Madonna, Michael Jackson, Iggy Pop, The Pretenders, Echo and The Bunnymen and McFly. His one-man show is all about life at the pointy end of the music business; Guy regales audiences with stories from behind the scenes. His self-deprecating wit is irresistible, and his rip-roaring anecdotes are brilliant and outrageous. This is an evening which is both funny and frank with enough insider's references to satisfy even aficionados — and he'll be bringing his beloved vintage Fender bass to demonstrate his craft. Guy is also a composer who has won a Grammy and been nominated for two Ivor Novello Awards – not bad for a bloke who just “hangs around with the band”! Please welcome bassist/ singer/ songwriter/ composer/ record producer /comedian/ actor/ author… best known for performing with Pink Floyd (David Gilmour & Nick Mason) … GUY PRATT to Interviewing the Legends… Purchase My Bass and Other Animals By GUY PRATT Available at amazon.com Guy Pratt came of age just as playing bass became sexy. In spurning the guitar solo, punk put the low-end on more of an equal footing—or maybe it was just that Paul Simonon and Bruce Foxton were pretty cool. Either way, people were trying out the basslines of "White Man in Hammersmith Palais" or "Peaches." Having dallied with Funkapolitan, Pratt suddenly found himself on Top of the Pops and supporting David Bowie with the smooth Australian outfit Icehouse. At a ludicrously young age he became a sought-after bass player to the stars, finding himself crawling from studios to bars and from hotels to stadiums with the likes of Robert Palmer, Womack & Womack, Bernard Edwards, Bryan Ferry, and David Crosby. The 1980s were in their prime, and with a number of Crolla-suited appearances in windswept videos behind him, he was invited to join Pink Floyd for a series of stadium extravaganzas to make Bono & Co. look fairly modest. He was in The Smiths for a week, has traveled through customs in a wheelchair after a flight with Jimmy Page, spent time in the studio with Michael Jackson, and has lived to tell all. This autobiographical account emerges from the successful stand-up tour of the same name, charting his journey from a Mod band to playing with Roxy Music at Live 8. The latest episode of the podcast which asks; if David picked potatoes on Jack Heap's playing field for one hour, how many Fumanchews would he able to cram into his gaping maw? Once again, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, Team Chart Music has returned to the safety of the late Seventies, and your panel is a) having their crayons thrown out of the window after an incident that could have been ripped from The Shining, b) being disappointed by Scalextric, and c) getting their arse tanned over an art installation on some concrete staircases. And all the time, the terror of Punk is looming, and no-one – particularly the canine population – is safe.As it turns out, the only Punk-free zone at this time is the episode of The Pops we're about to get stuck into. Like David's Scalextric, the show – in Robin Nash's safer-than-safe pair of hands – is running on rails by now. Unlike David's Scalextric, everything fits together, and nothing is skidding off the table and smashing against the wall. This is Top Of The Pops in its purest form, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, and we savour every mouthful of it for over six hours.Musicwise, it's a veritable bestiary of Pop Gargantua, with Xmas on the way, some huge LP drops this week, and the Monsters of the Hit Parade already starting to fight over your forthcoming record token. Paul Weller makes a doomed attempt to get the BBC to post his guitar to his girlfriend. The Carpenters say hello to some aliens. The Barron Knights dare to have a pop at The Old Sailor. Freddie Mercury pitches up dressed like a bottle of Sheridan's. Legs & Co hit up a sari shop in Shepherds Bush for a game of Sexy Lady Croquet. Status Quo predate Abba with an avatar bassist. Taylor Parkes, David Stubbs and Al Needham finish off this episode of The Pops in fine style. David Bowie watches his mate cheat on his missus up against a wall. Showaddywaddy nick some girl's silver top hat with ‘VOTE FONZIE' on it. Abba eschew all that Pop-A-Matic rammel and deliver another whopper of a #1. And Smokie are represented by a black void. TEMAS: • Ragazzo solo, ragazza sola (Versión italiana de “Space Oddity”) • Jump, they say • I feel free • The hearts filthy lesson • The mand who sold the world • Thursday's child • Day-in, Day-out (Versión en castellano) • China Girl • Look back in anger '88 • Slow burn • The next day • Valentine's day • Blackstar • Magic Dance • Sense of doubt • This is not America (directo) • Word on a wing • I can't give everything away • Sue (or in a season of crime) • Let's Dance (Versión de ensayo de la banda tributo Rock and Roll Suicide) NOTA: Cuando hablo de el guitarrista de The Jam en realidad me quería referir al bajista Bruce Foxton, imagino que se me cruzó un cable pensando en The Police.
My very special guest on this episode is Rick Buckler - drummer for The Jam! Described as 'the big beat behind all of those great songs' and 'the perfect drummer for the perfect bands', Rick tells his story from the early days learning the instrument, to meeting Paul, Steve Brookes and Bruce Foxton at Sheerwater School in Woking. We hear about the early days playing 50s and 60s favourites around Surrey to finding their own voice through a blend of rock, punk, mod and new wave, to signing with Polydor through to those incredible singles, albums, live performances and the personal triumphs - and ultimately how it all came to an end in 1982. A man proud of the legacy and music that endures to this day. You can also find out more by reading Rick's story in the book - That's Entertainment: My Life in The Jam- written with Ian Snowball - available here - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Thats-Entertainment-My-Life-Jam/dp/1783057947/ ** If you've enjoyed the podcast, please leave a review and tell your friends!
