E219 - Jo-Ann Oosterman - The Story of Tom - The Homeless Man of Many Pockets and His ArtThe Book: Tom's Story: My 16 Year Friendship with a HomelessTom's Story is about the author's friendship with Tom Hogan, a First Nations man who was perpetually homeless, a self-described chronic alcoholic, and a person who had episodes of psychosis. He was also a great storyteller and a gifted Woodland style artist.Jo-Ann first met Tom in 1998 when she volunteered to co-ordinate an art group for people who were homeless. She was an outreach worker and an HIV counsellor at the time. During the sixteen years of their friendship, she spent countless weekend and evening hours sitting on sidewalks beside Tom, listening and observing, then heading home to write it all down. With Tom's permission, she wrote about the hard realities of his life – a traumatic childhood, sleeping in bug-infested shelters, or panhandling in the sub-zero weather for just one more bottle. She became Tom's ally when he entered and left recovery programs, or simply searched for a safe place to live. Sometimes she helped; sometimes she got in the way. Other times, she tried to walk away, but she was always compelled to seek him out again to follow his story.Tom's Story is a unique and raw window into the lives of people who are homeless and marginalized because of addictions, mental illness, and generational trauma. This book is a testament to the power of hope, friendship, the generosity of people who own nothing, and using art to promote healing. It is also a strong argument for the harm-reduction model of managed-alcohol programs.www.joannoosterman.cahttps://nimbus.ca/store/toms-story.html___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/MindShift Power Podcast is for teens, about teens, and anyone who works with teens. Welcome to week six of our "Formed" series. In today's conversation, one of my favorite people is here, and that's John Bevere. I've been looking forward to sharing this conversation with you because I wholeheartedly believe it is the linchpin to formation. Today, we're talking about why the fear of the Lord will transform your life. John will also teach us why cynical people mock truth and how people create their own "Jesus." Buckle up today, folks. John's fired up and ready to share some powerful truths with you today. This is week five of our "Formed" series. In today's conversation, my new friend Strahan Coleman is here to talk about the cost of formation, how to negotiate with sorrow and silence, and why you can't perform your way to God's heart. Strahan is a writer, musician, and spiritual director from New Zealand. His work helps people to grow a deep friendship with God, seeing prayer as far more than conscious mental dialogue but as a way of existing with God in our everyday ordinary lives. His prayers and poems are invitations toward an honest, rested and open life lived in the Spirit and his dialogue around how we can incorporate ancient prayer forms into our modern lives has helped give language to a generation longing for a deeper living experience of God. Welcome to week four of our [Formed.] series. In today's conversation, my good friend Anthony Skinner is here to talk about what it means to be formed in our heart, our soul, our mind, and our strength. We'll also talk about how to develop a hearing ear; how to hear and then respond quickly to the Lord's direction in our lives, and also what it takes to heal the orphan heart. Anthony Skinner is a Spiritual Director, music and podcast producer, award-winning songwriter, recording artist, worship leader, and cohost of the popular Typology Podcast with Ian Cron. Additionally, he is a principal and co-creator of the devotional and meditation app “Shamah Way.” Dive Deeper: If you enjoy this episode with Anthony, I'm sure you'll also enjoy the following: 327: [Formed.] Jamie Winship on Why Spiritual Formation is a Filter, Why Transformation Requires Surrender, and The Questions God Asks 326: [Formed.] Richard Foster on Time-Tested Principles of Spiritual Formation, Why We Need to Slow Down, The Enemies of Noise and Hurry, and Why Humility is the Preeminent Virtue, and His 40-Year Friendship with Dallas Willard ++++++ Episode Links: Anthony's Website | Instagram | Facebook | Twitter Subscribe to #WinTodayShow on YouTube. Our new intern, Bella, ended a ten year friendship during spring break. When they both entered college, Bella said she was having a difficult time adjusting, while her best friend was immediately thriving. The friendship's dynamic really started changing when Bella started to feel like she was having to be more of a therapist than a friend. During spring break vacation, Bella had a slight emotional breakdown over a scary situation, and her friend completely invalidated her feelings. After that, the friend told Bella that spring break was ruined because of her, and Bella revealed how she'd really been feeling about their friendship.Should she give her friend a second chance to mend the relationship, even if it's gone sour? For Beyond 50's "History" talks, listen to an interview with Tim Shanahan. He'll talk about his extraordinary friendship with Muhammad Ali. In 1976, Shanahan was a living in Chicago and was associated with a charity that arranged for athletes to speak to underprivileged kids. Ali was also living in Chicago, having just reclaimed his title as heavyweight champion of the world. When Shanahan contacted Ali to ask whether he would consider participating, not only did the Champ agreed, but he went so far as to invite Shanahan to his home so he could learn more about the program. The two spent several hours talking; it was the beginning of a forty-year friendship that continues today. As their unique friendship evolved, Ali began inviting Shanahan to his sparring sessions and eventually to his Deer Lake, Pennsylvania training camp where he prepared to fight greats like Ken Norton and Earnie Shavers. Outside of the ring, Shanahan will share his memories of the celebrities the two unlikely friends met together and the numerous, unpublicized incidents of Ali's generosity to people in need.
