You can't tell the story of British rock and roll without acknowledging the impact of The Jam. Unfortunately, Paul Weller pretends that chapter never happened, which is sad and confusing. Drummer Rick Buckler recently published the book The Jam 1982 depicting the last year of the band's existence. They start off releasing The Gift with singles like "Town Called Malice" and "Precious" climbing the charts, but it ends with a call from Weller out of nowhere to pack it up. Rick tries to make sense of it all (Paul still isn't talking), the influence of Paul's dad John on the band, the progression of the band's sound, and what he's been doing since, including the short lived band Time UK and About the Jam. It's a disappointing and confusing epitaph for one of the greatest bands in history. www.omnibuspress.com/products/the-jam-1982-special-edition-published-on-17th-november-2022 www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

This is it, folks! With The Awakening, we've now reviewed every televised 5th Doctor story! And to describe this story as one that doesn't overstay its welcome is fairly apt! It's not a stunner, but it's also not a stinker. And, really, the star of the show is a giant sort of Green Goblin face that looks like it belongs in the Cave Train ride under some blacklights at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk! So join us as we don our LARPing outfits and check out The Awakening!

Paul Reuben passes away and Paulo links it to the Hoff - and honestly, truth is stranger than the fictional reality show we created. Tik Tok has been duped by Zepotha, we're just here for the promise of Synth-Wave. Dori visits the Costa Del Sol and finds a Town Called Malice, Paulo heads down a Fritz the Cat rabbit hole - which wasn't part of the sequel - and our new favourite song about a Fast Car, is our old favourite song about a Fast Car. Everything we discuss in this show can be found on @That80sShowSA on Facebook. This show originally plays out with music that we have to remove from the podcast - here are the songs we spoke about and played: Respectable - Mel & Kim Fast Car - Tracey Chapman

Paulo watched "Still: A Michael J Fox movie," and had all the feelings. So overwhelmed by emotion, he forgot the name of MJF's wife. Paulo is a jerk. But he's a jerk with a new guilty pleasure in "A Town Called Malice." Dori recommends a movie with a message, but of course, we only notice the impractically long cocaine straw and the waterbed, which made Paulo think the movie will end up being porn. Paulo is a jerk. We discover why Urban Cowboys are dead, who the ultimate 80s action guy was, and what happens when you add a house beat to "Smooth Operator." If DALLAS made love to PULP FICTION to the sounds of Duran Duran, A TOWN CALLED MALICE would come out.... Here's what the series is about.... This heady cocktail of crime thriller and family saga from the early 80s follows the Lords - a family of former gangsters from south London who have hit the bottom of the criminal food chain - and they're not happy about it. When they flee to the Costa del Sol in Spain after a gang war, the Lords realize that this is a golden opportunity to reinvent themselves and regain their former glory. However, they spend as much time fighting each other as they do their enemies. This fast-paced, neo-Western is a musical love letter to the 80s - full of romance, obsession, violence, deceit and swank. The Lord family is led by Jack Rowan ("Born to Kill") as Gene Lord and Tahirah Sharif ("The Haunting of Bly Manor") as Cindy Carter who talk to us about the show in our podcast "Das SerienSprechzimmer".
A TOWN CALLED MALICE: A family of crooks from London absconds to Spain's Costa del Sol in the early 1980s Gene Lord (Jack Rowan) flees to Spain in the early '80s with his girlfriend Cindy (Tahirah Sharif) to avoid arrest. The two quickly find themselves in the local underworld, and when the other Lords join them on the Costa del Sol, the crime family recognizes the opportunity: in the sunny south, they scent a whole new lucrative business that promises a golden future. Pulsating 80s soundtrack The eight-part Sky Original series is a mix of crime thriller and family saga, accompanied by a pulsating 80s soundtrack. Nick Love is creator and head writer of A TOWN CALLED MALICE. The film was directed by Jamie Donoughue. The title A TOWN CALLED MALICE refers to the song of the same name by the British band "The Jam." It reached number one on the British singles chart in February 1982. Interview with cult start Martha Plimpton & Eliza Butterworth Martha Plimpton is famous for her roles in iconic 80s movies like The Goonies and Parenthood. She also won an Emmy for her role as attorney Patty Nyholm in The Good Wife. Together with Eliza Butterworth (The Last Kingdom), she came into the "SerienSprechzimmer" and answered all my questions about the new series. You can listen to the interview here!

80s Spain, South-London gangsters and the crazy things you do for love – it's all to come in week's Plot Twist as Tom is joined by Jack Rowan, the star of a new series called A Town Called Malice (available on Sky and NOW). Whilst you might know Jack from roles in Peaky Blinders and Noughts + Crosses, he shares the plot twist moment in his career that took him from the boxing ring to our screens – and explains his excitement at entering a show dubbed as a "high-octane, neon Western... a musical love letter to the 1980s." We have a veritable hootenanny of guests on this week's show with both Brett Goldstein and Nick Mohammed on to talk Ted Lasso Season 3, and Martha Plimpton joining us to chat Bermondsey gangsters in A Town Called Malice on Sky. But that's not all, because we also take a look at the near future with star-studded environmental drama Extrapolations on Apple, and head over to Dublin for ITV crime drama Redemption. Plus James apologises for Kay's egregious failure to spot the Robert Kirkman/Brian K Vaughn mix up on last week's show. For shame, Kay.
My special guest on this episode of The Paul Weller Fan Podcast is Punk Photographer, Andy Rosen.Andy started out as a music photographer working on Record Mirror and Sounds and freelancing to NME, Melody Maker, The Face Magazine and most record companies during the burgeoning punk scene in the mid-1970s.As a friend and cohort of many who went on to become the biggest names in punk, Andy had unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to the musicians and artists of London's early punk scene. Andy photographed many of The Jam's live gigs - including the final shots of the band in 1982 on that final gig in Brighton... plenty of his photos have never been shared... but more of that in our chat...Andy also photographed the image for the rear of the Setting Sons album cover - taken on Brighton beach, the rear of the sleeve for Start! and the cover of Town Called Malice.Find out more , buy Andy's prints with a special offer for podcast listeners, and find video of the chat with the reveal of those images at paulwellerfanpodcast.com/episode-135-andy-rosen Hosted on Acast. shadowcon22 Campaign: ShadowCon | SYSTEM: | GM: | Info: You’ve come here because you’d heard of it, and you’ve been on this trip, a shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a convention that does not exist. Who knows when it all came to light? Maybe from pieces of a conversation you weren’t even supposed to hear, or a tip from a friend of a friend. But, yeah, this place exists and it’s got tabletop RPGs! All kinds! With d6s and d20s, sure, but there’s percentiles and maybe even d3s or fudge dice. The games are old favorites, new playtests, betas, ashcans and more. There are usually a few sessions to help with working it all out and make sure a story is told. And now, friend, you are at the door and you cracked the password! Tell the bartender to pull from the top shelf, because you’re in! I saw The Jam once, in 1982, at Perkin's Palace in Pasadena. It was great. The 3rd song here, "Town called Malice" is wonderful. I played the 2nd side of their last album, THE GIFT, over and over again to hear it. Most of the text on SNAP! is pretentious, but the photos are interesting. Enjoy! Miles 12/3/2007 The Jam SNAP! Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the screen writer Paul Abbott. He has written some of the most controversial and successful television programmes of the past decade. Shameless, Clocking Off and State of Play all flowed from his pen and have won him bags of awards. But he was driven to write as a response to the chaotic and traumatic childhood he'd suffered. One of eight children, both parents had left the family home by the time he was 11, leaving his older sister to bring them up. They had a near-feral existence, and lived, says Paul, like rats. At 15 he attempted suicide and ended up in a psychiatric ward. After that, without wanting to or really being aware it was happening, he wrote as a way of letting out the rage he felt inside him. He was quickly able to turn this writing into short stories, radio plays and film scripts and to sell them. Now he is credited with making television the 'new National Theatre'. But it's not his greatest achievement - he is proudest of his successful marriage to Saskia, his wife of eighteen years, and of their two children.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs]Favourite track: Town Called Malice by The Jam Book: Complete Works by Arthur Miller Luxury: Writing pad and pencils.
