For less than the price of a cappuccino every month you get access to over 100 interviews, reviews, creative articles, podcasts and playlists PLUS exclusive content. It is difficult and scary being a new musical theatre writer. Creative (and romantic) duo Baker & Ryall took a look at what they needed to do in order to present their first show, Tasting Notes, and decided to become producers as well. In this Interview Charlie and Richard discuss their professional journey and offer some powerful insights into writing and producing new musical theatre. As creatives they have recognised that they are inspired by the bleaker and darker themes that inform so many great musicals. But rather than fight against these themes the duo have turned this recognition into a strength enabling them to truly focus on material that they are passionate about. During our conversation Richard also shared some great insights into the musical director's view of working on shows explaining why he looks to be led by text. And how to find your way into a show that you might not be convinced about.I am fascinated by Richard Baker & Charlie Ryall's focus on truly going after what they need. I asked Charlie why the duo tried to get new piece Hangover Square on at 54 Below in New York: was it to get the show in front of Broadway producers or just to prove that they could present their work in New York? -She replied “The latter and both!” Lesson: set yourself clear objectives and believe you can achieve them! How many of us, as creatives, set ourselves these kinds of goals? Baker & Ryall are not fabulously wealthy people that can drift around knocking on doors until something happens. Instead they need to make things happen in order to get their work seen: in order for their creative journey to make sense.Hangover Square by Baker&Ryall is at 54 Below on 19th September 2024. Kearsney College Presents David Kramer and Taliep Petersen's multi award-winning hit musical “KAT and THE KINGS.” The show was awarded the prestigious Lawrence Olivier Award for Best New Musical on London's West End and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best New Musical during its run on Broadway. This is a truly South African story, based on actual events, told through the eyes of Kat Diamond, who started a vocal harmony group with his three best friends in District Six during the 1950s. We follow these teens through their trials and tribulations as they become a well-known performing act touring South Africa. This show has never been produced by a school or an amateur theatre company and Kearsney College is proud to uphold its reputation as leading the way in the performing arts with this scoop. The original creator of the show, David Kramer, is intimately involved in this production and we trust that audiences will be thrilled from start to finish. This is a performance not to be missed: experience a fast-paced show full of humour and laughter, coupled with toe-tapping songs with witty lyrics in a Rock-‘n-Roll style, all accompanied by a live band. Our cast of young actors from Kearsney College and Westville Girls' High will astound you with their talent and unquenchable energy, leaving you begging for more at the end. Directed and choreographed by Daisy Spencer, a true legend in Durban's entertainment industry, with music direction by Kearsney's own Bernard Kruger, the stage is sure to be set alight with something unforgettable. This week's guest is the very gorgeous Jeanette Thomas, co-host of one of Auckland's most popular breakfast radio shows on The Breeze, and former presenter of Good Morning. She beamed into Penny's office to chat about their time together on Good Morning, about how her perimenopause was camouflaged by her intense grief and the one symptom of menopause she would rather have given birth six times in a row with no drugs to avoid.  They laugh A LOT about Penny's bits, about the patriarchy and about her two beloved husbands. Or, is it a revolutionary u-turn that takes after the example of Jesus, including a willingness to sacrifice our privileges for the oppressed, forgotten, insignificant and powerless? This week Steve continues to look at the ways in which we’ve misunderstood the meaning of the cross. Whether it’s underestimating or overstating its importance, something so central to the Christian faith has also become a central debate. But Steve argues that “the cross has become, not just central to the gospel, it has become the whole gospel.” And that’s problematic for multiple reasons. The cross is nothing without the resurrection and vice versa. And moreover, it’s the resurrection that fuels our understanding of the gospel going-forward. In 2003 Michelle McManus shot to fame as the winner of the second series of Pop Idol. Throughout the series she stood out for her powerhouse soul voice. But she also got huge amounts of press coverage for her weight.   Today plus-size is celebrated, body positivity is embraced and everyone is encouraged to be who they are. In 2003 this was not the case. She was pilloried, debated, vilified and criticised every day in the media for the duration of the competition. But it never through her off course and she won with 58% of the public vote.  You would imagine that when an audience has spoken and a winner declared that the powers that be would just accept it. But that isn’t what happened. When she was announced as the winner one of the judges stormed off the set on live television as she was about to reprise the song. Michelle now lives back in Scotland where she works constantly as a radio and television host and of course as a singer. But there is also another side to Michelle. In 2012 she took her first one-woman show to the Edinburgh fringe and has been a sell-out success every year since. The shows are mix of comedy and cabaret and she plays every night of August to packed audiences at the Stand Comedy Club. (I saw her show last year and it was absolutely hilarious!)
