The poet laureate Simon Armitage challenges himself to write a new poem to capture the spirit of an animal and to see if he can bring it closer to the human world. For a new 10-part series, My Poetry and Other Animals (on BBC Radio 4 at 1.45, from December 23rd), he is guided by his fellow poets as he experiences a series of close encounters – looking into the eye of a tiger, tracking a fox and standing amongst a room full of spiders. Elizabeth Bishop and Feargal Sharkey are Simon Armitage's guides to the world of fish. But the science writer Amorina Kingdom wants everyone to listen more closely to what's happening underwater. In her book, Sing Like Fish, she traces how sounds travel with currents; the songs, clicks and drumming that help sea creatures to survive, and how this musical landscape is being affected by human noise. If humans could finally grasp what animals were communicating to each other, could it enable us to join in the conversation with animals? The behavioural ecologist, Professor Christian Rutz, from the University of St Andrews, is a specialist in the different behaviours of crows. He believes that with recent breakthroughs in AI and data collection, talking with animals might be closer than ever.Producer: Katy Hickman

A warning: this conversation should make everyone angry, whether you draw a drink, go for a wild swim, or just watch your rising water bill - asking how this utility privatization bubble caused so much trouble. The short but solid trajectory of the Undertones' career reflects the arc of popular British music during the same time. Starting off in Derry Ireland as punks with an ear for melodies in the late 70s and ending up about five years later exploring sophisti-pop is a map of what was in style in the UK. If the band wasn't so good at both genres you might accuse them of selling out, but, in truth, they're just excellent at making catchy songs. The band split up in the early 80s and lead singer Feargal Sharkey went solo before leaving music altogether. We're joined this week by bassist and songwriter Michael Bradley. He went to work for the BBC before retiring and now tours occasionally with the other guys (minus Feargal) even releasing new music. He discusses some of the classic tunes he wrote, his approach to the band now, having John Peel as a fan, and much more. The 1975, ABC, The Adventures, Associates, Kate Bush, Classix Nouveaux, Cock Robin, Dua Lipa, Finneas, Freur, Rupert Hine, The Human League, Keane, Cyndi Lauper, Luxuria, Joni Mitchell, Prefab Sprout, Feargal Sharkey, Sia

With half a billion social media followers and a growing political influence among her fans, we look at how she might derail Donald Trump's ambitions to return to the White House.Turning to GB News after what must have been a week of crisis meetings, David and Simon spotlight the news channel's co-owner Paul Marshall, who may even be the next owner of The Telegraph newspaper and whose reputation is on the line following the disgrace of Lawrence Fox.And, they're talking Feargal Sharkey – why the pop star turned campaigner is a thorn in the side of Britain's water industry.Producer: Eve Streeter Editor: Sarah Teasdale Executive Producer: William Miller Researcher: Sophie Smith Music by Eclectic Sounds A Raconteur production for BBC Radio 4

This week  we talk about "Let's Talk About Girls"! The original was done by Tucson's The Grodes (aka The Tongues of Truth) (1:10). This gem features slinky guitar & organ, deft drumming, and a psychedelic pulse of a bassline. Not to mention Jagger-esque vocals and a fun, fantastic chorus! The most famous version  (due to Nuggets) is by patron Saints of the podcast, The Chocolate Watchband (1:04:46). Huh!  Singer Don Bennett takes the tune out of teen-town and makes an ADULT version (he even talks about women)! Atmospheric psych guitars and ominous sleighbells (!) punctuate this performance. In the new wave era, The Undertones decided to celebrate Derry Girls (1:36:36). This one has a "My Generation" bounce to it and Feargal Sharkey is an Irish singer trying to sound like an American trying to sound like an Englishman trying to sound like an American. The final word falls to The Frowning Clouds, who totally change the arrangement, cut the swagger, cool-ify the already cool chorus, and update the song for the 21st Century  (2:11:14). Hi Manny!!!

When ‘Teenage Kicks' by The Undertones was released in 1978, legendary DJ John Peel took the unprecedented step of playing it back to back on Radio 1. The lead singer was 20 year old Feargal Sharkey and the band were formed out of a desire to prove that five young men growing up in the Derry conflict zone could successfully learn to play instruments, write their own songs and hit the big time. Taking action is a thread which runs throughout Sharkey's life, and after a successful solo career and time as chief at UK Music, he now plays a pivotal role in the campaign against the pollution of Britain's rivers and seas.

And in the UK, companies take £60bn in profit while pumping raw sewage into waterways – while London's millennia-old chalk aquifer is now drained bone-dry. Vinyl LP Records: The history - - A phonograph record (also known as a gramophone record, especially in British English), often simply called a record, was an analog sound storage medium in the form of a flat disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove. The groove usually starts near the periphery and ends near the center of the disc. Because the records were made of polyvinyl chloride they took on the name “VINYL”. In the mid-2000s, gradually, records made of any material began to be called vinyl records, or simply vinyl. The phonograph disc record was the primary medium used for music reproduction throughout the 20th century. - - - The details - - The LP record (from "long playing" or "long play") is a phonograph record format characterized by a speed of 33 1⁄3 rpm, having a 12- or 10-inch (30- or 25-cm) diameter, and uses the "microgroove" groove specification. Introduced by Columbia in 1948, it was soon adopted as a new standard by the entire record industry. The new product was a 12- or 10-inch (30 or 25 cm) fine-grooved disc made of PVC ("vinyl") and played with a smaller-tipped "microgroove" stylus at a speed of 33 1⁄3 rpm. Each side of a 12-inch LP could play for about 22 minutes. The average LP has about 1,500 feet (460 m; 0.28 mi) of groove on each side. It all started on a two-week camping trip in County Donegal, Northern Ireland in August 1974. Friends Michael Bradley, Billy Doherty and brothers Vince and John O’Neill decided they wanted to start a band. The group had existed as an idea for about six months in the minds of John, Vince and Billy. For a while, the unnamed group hade no instruments with which to practice, so there were no songs either. But it didn't stop them discussing the future of the band, who would play what instrument, and what kind of songs they were going to make. There was one more obvious problem that needed to be overcome: They didn't have a singer. Doherty invited local Irish Dancing legend and choir boy, Feargal Sharkey to join as singer and soon The Undertones were born, playing scout halls, school halls and social clubs before their big break. This unlikely group of lads from Derry, a town which was in the midst of getting over the Bloody Sunday shootings of 1972, made a point of rebelling against the fervent political and sectarian turmoil of their surroundings by making some of the most innocent, pop-influenced music of all the 1970s punk bands, a couple of which have stood the test of time and feature on compilations to this day.Teenage dreams really are hard to beat.Contact:Twitter: @BannedBiogsFacebook: @BannedBiographiesInstagram: @bannedbiographiesE-mail: bannedbiographies@gmail.com

Whilst this Autumn’s heavy rainfall has caused some rivers in the north of England to burst their banks and flood neighbourhoods there are rivers in the south-east with barely a drop of water in them. Tom Heap asks what impact this is this having on aquatic ecosystems. He talks to water companies and environmental campaigner Feargal Sharkey to find out how flora and fauna are changing as a result of the shortage of water. It's a particular concern for chalk streams, which provide a unique wildlife habitat found in very few places in the world. Tom asks who's the blame - the water companies for taking water out of the rivers, the Environment Agency for giving them permission to do it, or us consumers for using more water per person than we ever have before? The 40th episode of the podcast which asks: so how do you get your pills out of a Kinder Surprise egg while wearing long opera gloves? This episode, Pop-Crazed Youngsters, takes us nearly ten years away from the glory of the last one and plunges us deep into the turquoise shell-suited heart of the Neighnties - and oh dear, our beloved programme is right up Arsehole Street. The ratings are dropping like a Shed Seven release in its second week, newer and savvier shows are undercutting it, and the BBC have pissed about with the scheduling to such an extent that middle-aged spods with a craving for Judith Hann are sitting there shouting; "Oh, what's this bollocks? WHERE'S TOMORROW'S WORLD?"  Musicwise, hmm: Gary Davies, in a boxy denim jacked beloved of the era, just about manages to not look like he's too old for this shit (despite dropping a few clunky Dad-phrases). Inspiral Carpets - the Freddie and the Dreamers of Madchester - pitch up, demonstrating the bad haircuts that were available to youths at the time. Saffron-not-yet-of-Republica dresses up like a magician's assistant. The Mock Turtles do a mobile phone advert. The mid-Eighties refuses to piss off, in the shape of Feargal Sharkey, The Waterboys and Mike and the Mechanics. Still, there's a welcome opportunity for people who haven't got Sky yet to have a proper goz at The Simpsons, Black Box remind us that they did more than one record, and there's some dead good angel wings on your woman in C&C Music Factory. Chesney Hawkes - 'the iconic legend of the 80s and 90s', according to his website, which is roughly 1.96666 decades too many - punches the air.  Sarah Bee and Simon Price link up with Al Needham at the car boot sale of 1991, veering off on such tangents as being refused entry to gay clubs by National Front activists, why you should never install a plastic tank into your wardrobe to piss into, bragging at school that you've seen Sky at Centre Parcs, the phenomenon of Some Rap, and the misery of having to share a crappy Student Union with people who have been on Top Of The Pops more than you have. And there's swearing. Video Playlist |  Subscribe  |  Facebook  |  Twitter Subscribe to us on iTunes here. Support us on Patreon here. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Dave and Holly celebrate Lá Fhéile Phádraig or St. Patrick's Day as some of you might call it by realizing they can't pronounce a lick of Gaelic. We fail to pronounce the names Feargal Sharkey (of The Undertones) or Liam Ó Maonlaí (of Hothouse Flowers) correctly. Dave even fails to remember that Declan Patrick MacManus now known as Elvis Costello might have a bit of Irish blood running through him. We do however, remember many of the great songs as we pay homage to some of our favorite Irish artists. Listen to the songs on our "What Difference Does It Make" Spotify playlist. Episode 59: Summer 2018 Mix Tape (Part 1) - Re-Flex, The Assembly, Ultravox, The B-52’s June is here and that means summer is almost here too! To get ready for the season, Brian and Sarah thought it would be fun to compile another mix tape.  They asked last year's mix tape contributor and guest co-host Colby Zell to join in again, and he agreed. But this year's mix tape has yet another contributor-- and it's none other than Jon Lamoreaux, host of the excellent podcast The Hustle! Jon brings his wealth of knowledge and behind-the-scenes stories gained from his many interviews with musicians who've had at least a fleeting taste of fame in their careers. Each host has chosen two songs to contribute to the mix tape; one for each side. In this episode, the songs for Side One are discussed, along with the artists, the albums the singles are from, and the videos. Some pretty strong opinions are voiced, and additionally, the following questions are answered: Who almost fell asleep listening to one of the songs? Who stole music from his sister? Which video brought to mind the 70's sci-fi movie Zardoz? And who is Feargal Sharkey's doppelganger? Mix Tape Side One 1. Sarah's pick: Re-Flex - Politics of Dancing 2. Brian's pick: The Assembly - Never Never 3. Colby's pick: Ultravox - the Voice 4. Jon's pick: B-52's - Girl From Ipanema Goes to Greenland See the videos we discuss here: Re-Flex - The Politics of Dancing The Assembly - Never Never Ultravox - The Voice The B-52's - Girl From Ipanema Goes to Greenland   Visit The Hustle at: https://thehustle.podbean.com/ and https://www.facebook.com/thehustlepodcast/ Read more at http://www.permanentrecordpodcast.com/ Visit us at https://www.facebook.com/permrecordpodcast Follow us at https://twitter.com/permrecordpod
