The poet laureate Simon Armitage challenges himself to write a new poem to capture the spirit of an animal and to see if he can bring it closer to the human world. For a new 10-part series, My Poetry and Other Animals (on BBC Radio 4 at 1.45, from December 23rd), he is guided by his fellow poets as he experiences a series of close encounters – looking into the eye of a tiger, tracking a fox and standing amongst a room full of spiders. Elizabeth Bishop and Feargal Sharkey are Simon Armitage's guides to the world of fish. But the science writer Amorina Kingdom wants everyone to listen more closely to what's happening underwater. In her book, Sing Like Fish, she traces how sounds travel with currents; the songs, clicks and drumming that help sea creatures to survive, and how this musical landscape is being affected by human noise. If humans could finally grasp what animals were communicating to each other, could it enable us to join in the conversation with animals? The behavioural ecologist, Professor Christian Rutz, from the University of St Andrews, is a specialist in the different behaviours of crows. He believes that with recent breakthroughs in AI and data collection, talking with animals might be closer than ever.Producer: Katy Hickman

The short but solid trajectory of the Undertones' career reflects the arc of popular British music during the same time. Starting off in Derry Ireland as punks with an ear for melodies in the late 70s and ending up about five years later exploring sophisti-pop is a map of what was in style in the UK. If the band wasn't so good at both genres you might accuse them of selling out, but, in truth, they're just excellent at making catchy songs. The band split up in the early 80s and lead singer Feargal Sharkey went solo before leaving music altogether. We're joined this week by bassist and songwriter Michael Bradley. He went to work for the BBC before retiring and now tours occasionally with the other guys (minus Feargal) even releasing new music. He discusses some of the classic tunes he wrote, his approach to the band now, having John Peel as a fan, and much more. It is just so HEART! The 1975, ABC, The Adventures, Associates, Kate Bush, Classix Nouveaux, Cock Robin, Dua Lipa, Finneas, Freur, Rupert Hine, The Human League, Keane, Cyndi Lauper, Luxuria, Joni Mitchell, Prefab Sprout, Feargal Sharkey, Sia

Label: A&M 2804Year: 1986Condition: MPrice: $12.00From a warehouse find, this is a new, unplayed stock copy, in its original picture sleeve. The former lead singer of the Undertones managed (with some help by Eurythmics producer-wizard David Stewart) to craft one of the most irresistable pop confections of the 1980s with this tune. Unfortunately, its relative obscurity means most people haven't had a chance to fall in love with it. Yet. That's why I'm sticking a snippet of it in the jukebox. :-) The B side is a non-album cut. Note: This beautiful 45 has no notable flaws, grading Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio), and the picture sleeve is nearly flawless!

After being battered by two byelections, where could the Tories possibly turn next? That's right more of the same – no wonder the votes of no confidence are pouring into the 1922 committee. PLUS, Speaking of pouring, the water companies are destroying our waterways and running away with huge profits. Why? And how can we fix the system? Prominent Water campaigner Feargal Sharkey joins the panel to discuss all that. And in the extra bit for subscribers the panel answers the question: How do we stop pop music from turning into a sterile heritage industry? “Rishi's Sunak's message that he's now the changed candidate hasn't gone down too well.” – Rachel Cunliffe. “The simple truth is that this country is in pain and we need relief from it.” – Feargal Sharkey. “For me water is a litmus test for the state that the rest of the country is in.” – Feargal Sharkey. “We're completely committing ecocide in our own backyard.” – Feargal Sharkey. This week  we talk about "Let's Talk About Girls"! The original was done by Tucson's The Grodes (aka The Tongues of Truth) (1:10). This gem features slinky guitar & organ, deft drumming, and a psychedelic pulse of a bassline. Not to mention Jagger-esque vocals and a fun, fantastic chorus! The most famous version  (due to Nuggets) is by patron Saints of the podcast, The Chocolate Watchband (1:04:46). Huh!  Singer Don Bennett takes the tune out of teen-town and makes an ADULT version (he even talks about women)! Atmospheric psych guitars and ominous sleighbells (!) punctuate this performance. In the new wave era, The Undertones decided to celebrate Derry Girls (1:36:36). This one has a "My Generation" bounce to it and Feargal Sharkey is an Irish singer trying to sound like an American trying to sound like an Englishman trying to sound like an American. The final word falls to The Frowning Clouds, who totally change the arrangement, cut the swagger, cool-ify the already cool chorus, and update the song for the 21st Century  (2:11:14). Hi Manny!!!
