Biographer Ron Chernow's acclaimed books include Alexander Hamilton, adapted into the Broadway musical Hamilton, and Washington: A Life, which received the Pulitzer Prize for Biography. With his new book Mark Twain, Chernow illuminates the colorful and complex life of the fame-seeking journalist, satirist, performer and political pundit. America's first literary celebrity, Twain was unique among his contemporaries for grappling so fully with the legacy of slavery, including with his most famous book, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. On May 21, 2025, Ron Chernow came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco for an onstage conversation with Jonathan Bass.
The biographer Ron Chernow has written about the Rockefellers and the Morgans. His book about George Washington won a Pulitzer Prize. His book about Alexander Hamilton was adapted into a hit Broadway musical. Now, in “Mark Twain,” Chernow turns to the life of the author and humorist who became one of the 19th century's biggest celebrities and, along the way, did much to reshape American literature in his own image. On this week's episode of the podcast, Chernow tells the host Gilbert Cruz how he came to write about Twain and what interested him most about his subject.“The thing that triggered this Mark Twain mania in me was more Mark Twain the platform artist, Mark Twain the political pundit, Mark Twain the original celebrity, even more than Mark Twain the novelist or short story writer,” Chernow says. But at the same time, “I felt that he was very seminal in terms of bringing, to American literature, really bringing the heartland alive — writing about ordinary people in the vernacular and taking this wild throbbing kind of madcap culture, of America's small towns in rural areas, and really introducing that into fiction.” Unlock full access to New York Times podcasts and explore everything from politics to pop culture. It explores the history of the famous American banking institution, J.P. Morgan & Co., and the impact it had on the development of the modern financial system.Chernow starts by tracing the origins of the Morgan banking dynasty, which began with the arrival of Scottish immigrant George Peabody to the United States in the early 19th century. The richest man in the world was on the run.President Theodore Roosevelt's Justice Department was planning to file an antitrust suit against Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company in 1906, and the states wanted to get into the action before the Attorney General did. Multiple lawsuits were filed against the directors of the company that controlled over ninety percent of oil production in the United States and had, by prevailing accounts, used unfair practices to gain its monopoly in the market.Once the floodgates of lawsuits against Standard Oil opened, the focus landed on the company's origins and rise to power, which meant the testimony of the company's founder was essential. And of course, having the richest man in the world dragged into your courtroom was a pretty big deal. Process servers and newsmen engaged in a massive manhunt to find him and serve him with subpoenas. But a man with multiple estates and an annual income of over fifty million dollars could hide out anywhere. He wouldn't be found until he wanted to be found. Unless you followed your nose. On our next episode, we catch up with “The Most Famous Man in The World” as Teddy Roosevelt returns to America after his African safari and world tour to find that President William Howard Taft has made a real mess of things and just maybe, he will have to do something about it. Republicans argue that President Biden's infrastructure plan includes items irrelevant to infrastructure. It will be a big political fight. But passing big infrastructure legislation has always been difficult - legally and politically. In this podcast, we briefly review the history of America's infrastructure - from Washington's dream of a water canal to America's constitution, and then to presidents that followed Washington, all the way to Eisenhower. Journalists, scholars, politicians, and citizens often assume that calls for secession are political or historical aberrations. Our founding myth is that the Civil War divided an otherwise united nation and we soon reconstructed the United States to form a more perfect union. But Richard Kreitner's provocative new book, Break It Up: Secession, Division, and the Secret History of America's Imperfect Union (Little Brown, 2020), argues that “disunion” is the hidden thread in the history of the United States. Kreitner is a contributing writer to The Nation who has also published in The New York Times, Boston Globe, Washington Post, USA Today, Slate, Raritan, and The Baffler. American politics from colonial times to the present, Break it Up argues, has always included “forces that have conspired to divide it” and Kreitner insists that we get a more nuanced and comprehensive “understanding of both our contentious past and our uncertain future” if we confront that history. Drawing on rich scholarship from multiple disciplines Break It Up argues that the United States has “always been riven by race and religion, cleaved by class and culture, sundered by section, and fragmented by geography.” The United States was always a “tentative proposition” – an “experiment that might fail at any time.” The book insists that asking questions about unity is the “prerequisite for serious discussion about what we Americans want the future to hold for ourselves and this perennially divided union.” Moreover, facing disunion assists in the work of building an inclusive, multiracial democracy capable of combating climate change or racial equality. As the book starkly puts it, the U.S. should either finish the work of Reconstruction or give up on the idea of the “united” states as currently conceived. Break It Up uses four eras to trace the theme of disunion. “A Vast, Unwieldy Machine” deals with the colonial and Revolutionary periods with Kreitner arguing that resisting a common enemy in the British should not be mistaken for unity. For example, the process of unification was characterized by bitter disagreements over representation and the protection of enslavement in the proposed Constitution. Here, Kreitner reviews some of what is well known in the literature but also smaller (and heated) controversies that may surprise those who think they know the period well. The second era highlights the disagreements in the early Republic over the increase in land (e.g., the Louisiana Purchase) and Aaron Burr's attempt to break off parts of the country to form an independent Empire. For Hamilton: An American Musical buffs, Kreitner challenges some of Chernow's assumptions to create a more nuanced understanding of the first Secretary of the Treasury. Kreitner's third era documents the increasing appetite for disunion in the years before the American Civil War – and the ultimate schism. The fourth period is less defined by chronology. “Return of the Repressed” ranges from Reconstruction to 21st century plans for secession. Kreitner argues that Reconstruction's failure to resolve fundamental conflicts leave us with a nation perpetually split over race and class. We dive into Cherpter 22: "Stabbed in the Dark." The hurricane is closing in on Alexander Hamilton and in addition to seeing more hatred from Thomas Jefferson aka Regina George, we also get a small glimpse into Ham's rivalry with Aaron Burr (sir). But mostly, we learn about how the haters tried to bring Hamilton down but he always seemed to come out on the up and up... for now. Our Patreon page: https://www.patreon.com/TheHamilcast Notes for Chapter 22: http://www.thehamilcast.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Chapter-22-Stabbed-in-the-Dark.pdf
The thing about the Reynolds affair is that it was bananas and there were so many people involved. This week, we tackle Ron Chernow's Chapter 21: "Exposure" which is "We Know" only with three entirely different dudes. The endless soap opera of Hamilton's bad decisions is even more convoluted than you think but Chernow reminds us that this is just the beginning. BA DA DA DA DUM.
We're back to talking Chernow this week and things are getting meaty, friends. We discuss the start of the two-party system, how the cabinet's fractured into factions, and get into how they smacked each other in the press (anonymously of course) and didn't print retractions. Oh, did we mention that Thomas Jefferson had a Burn Book about Alexander Hamilton? Because that was an actual thing. Daddy's callin'.
Here it is, friends! The start of Alexander Hamilton's affair with Maria Reynolds. We discuss Eliza's trip upstate and how Hamilton convinced her to stay away even longer, the fact that James Reynolds is a garbage person, and oh yeah! A.Ham wrote his Report on Manufacturers and started a brand new town that ended up a failure. Woof.
Chernow is back! This week we tackle Chapter 18: "Of Avarice and Enterprise" and discuss Alexander Hamilton's ideas for the mint and a little thing called SCRIPPOMANIA. Madison and Jefferson were not happy because duh. Plus, there's an Eliza quote that will make you love her even more.
What happens if someone you love doesn't love Hamilton the way you do? How do you prep a non-Hamilperson for seeing the show? What if they - GASP - don't like it? We dive into all of this on our very first edition of #AskTheHamilcast.
We are once again joined by Kelly Warne and! It's the “Guns and Ships” episode! Mike makes good on his promise and totally nails the Lafayette's rap and it's so much fun. Pop culture references include: That Thing You Do! (again), The West Wing (again), and Bette Midler's Bathhouse Betty days. Oh! And we YASSSSS KWEEN over a flawless Abigail Adams quote. All while bracing the New York City summer heat.
We have a LOT to cover this week! Our friend Kelly Warne shares her stressful, emotional, and rewarding experience buying last minute StubHub tickets to see Hamilton. It results in the most beautiful moment we've had on the show to date (spoiler: there are tears). After we pull ourselves together, we dive into Chernow's "Dr. Pangloss" chapter which is basically "What'd I Miss" and "The Room Where It Happens" while we also dissect how this chapter is (brilliantly) portrayed in the show.
Happy Independence Day, friends! …Or not? Nicole Scholet de Villavicencio from the Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society is back to tell us about how we should really all be celebrating on July 2nd, and drops knowledge on Chernow's Chapter 15 “Villainous Business.” We're also joined by Gillian's husband Michael Paul Smith and discuss all of the Alexander Hamilton events thrown by the AHA Society this summer.
*Recorded on May 19th* This episode is all about Chernow's Chapter 14: "Putting the Machine in Motion." We talk George Washington's sense of "doom" about the presidency, Angelica's Disney princess status, and the first writings referencing A.Ham's infidelity. Have you read this?!
We're back talking Chernow with The Federalist Papers. These men truly did write they were running out of time, it's crazy. We also read listener emails, Bianca tells us about Hamilton yoga, and we discuss how to deal with people who don't match your enthusiasm for Hamilton.
Our guest this week is Kate Powers, a facilitator and teacher with Rehabilitation Through the Arts at Sing Sing and Fishkill Correctional Facilities. We talk about how Kate uses Shakespeare and Hamilton to inspire inmates. We were so moved talking to Kate about the work she does that we decided to skip Chernow, so the book discussion will pick up next week.
It's a bummer, but we have to talk about the crazy level of hypocrisy surrounding our Founding Fathers fighting for freedom yet still owning slaves. It sucks. We break down who was the biggest hypocrite and… we hate to say it, but there's a good possibility Alexander and Eliza Hamilton owned some slaves of their own. But we balance things out with some awesome listener emails! Silver lining? Yes, because we have the best listeners of all time.
We're back talking Chernow and this week we really #FeelTheBurr (especially since we're sipping on some Aaron Burr Cidery goodness). It's pretty much a therapy session for Aaron Burr. In spite of Gillian and Ashley's best efforts to have a Harry Potter-centric episode, Bianca and Meg keep things on track. Fun fact: Ham4Ham didn't start with the Broadway show we know and love. Intriguing right?
Gillian and Bianca take a break (get it?) from Chernow to focus on the brand new Hamiltome aka Hamilton: The Revolution. Ashley Graffeo joins in on the conversation and designer extraordinaire Meg Smith of Sweet Lady Designs sits in with us for the first time.
Gillian and Bianca are once again joined by Gillian's husband Michael Paul Smith. They talk Hamilton SoulCycle and get into some awesome listener emails. Things take a bit of a sad turn then discussing Chapter 9 in Chernow, "Raging Billows." Sadfaces.
It's our 10th episode! Our Hamisode! Gillian and Bianca are joined by Gillian's husband Michael Smith, who has finally listened to the cast recording after months of trying to hold out. Mike gushes over his favorite songs, gives advice for people living with the Hamilton-obsessed, and talks Marshall Mathers, John Adams, and a lot more. We also get into the badass Peggy Schuyler as well as The Battle of Yorktown in our discussion of Chapter 8 in Chernow, "Glory." Oh, and did you know "The World Turned Upside Down" was an actual march that was played by the British? Believe it. "My Shot" instrumental provided by Bao Vu.
Cue all the memes, all the gifs, and all the references because this week we are joined by none other than Scott Wasserman. Oh ya know, just the guy who programs all of the beats in a little show called HAMILTON! Yup, we are still floating after this awesome conversation with the Hamilton Beatmaster. And you guys! It's perfect because we're up to Chernow's "The Lovesick Colonel" chapter where Ham meets Eliza and Scott told us all about the badass rewiiiiiind in "Satisfied." "My Shot" instrumental provided by Bao Vu.
