In this episode, Elizabeth talks to Nick Taylor-Vaisey, a journalist for Politico who works on the Ottawa Playbook, a free daily morning newsletter decoding Canadian politics. Nick and Elizabeth discuss the role of newsletters in curating information in a high-choice media environment and the way journalism has adapted to becoming digital. They discuss newsletters as a form of political information sharing and how this type of media can facilitate a direct relationship between author and reader. Elizabeth and Nick close out the show by chatting about the different reasons that individuals might subscribe to a political newsletter,  the role of news aggregators in curating information, and what it's like to work in the Ottawa “fishbowl”.Additional Resources:To learn more about the high-choice media environment, check out Wonks and War Rooms' first episode: The High-Choice Media Environment with Jane Lytvynenko.Nick mentions how newsletters are an old medium that are being updated to stay fresh and trendy. Over the course of the last few years, we've had a host of parents and educators ask our opinion on the use of screens in the classroom. In every case, we advise people to keep their eyes on the research so that technology can be utilized as something that enhances rather than detracts from the educational experience. In a recent column in National Review, Anthony Kinnett, the executive director of Choice Media, offers this helpful summary: Screen addiction, blue-light exhaustion, and other medical issues accompanying near round-the-clock screen use have only increased during this age of the computer replacing the teacher in the classroom. ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning disabilities' coping mechanisms, often achieved through handwriting and screen restraint, are becoming less common as physical media takes a back seat to the convenience and entertainment of classroom computer use. Parents, get involved in your school's decision-making process in order to strike a balance.

My guest this week is Heather Adams, a boy mom, communications expert and CEO of Choice Media & Communications, a leading communications firm dedicated to providing clients in the entertainment and lifestyle space with quality communications services. Choice helps brands, influencers, and authors grow their business and influence by leveraging their unparalleled relationships and crafting smart, personalized communication and brand strategies that demand attention and deliver results. 4:37 – Heather 101 She grew up outside Atlanta, in Marietta, with an idyllic family. In high school, her yearbook advisor told her she had a gift for storytelling. So in college she studied communications and magazines. 11:25 – Layoffs Heather was leading a publicity team at a company, but the recession happened, and she was laid off. Her husband looked at her and said don't take your next step out of fear. Another company brought her on as a consultant, and she made double the money. She eventually started her own company. 22:40 – Passion for mentorship High school teachers believed in Heather and encouraged her to study communications. Her mission now is to mentor college women. There is so much power in linking arms with women and setting a wider table and allowing every seat to be occupied by a woman instead of fighting against each other for one. 29:20 – Supporting women Heather used to hustle to be the best, but she learned that other women's' success does not diminish her own opportunity. As a young girl, people told Heather she was bossy and needed to be quiet. But her parents celebrated her assertiveness. 37:20 – Mentoring If you are looking for a mentor, don't downplay virtual mentors. If you don't know someone personally, you can follow them on social media, read their books, listen to their podcasts, etc. Find someone you know who has an exceptional talent, and ask to learn from them, even if it's not work related. 46:26 – What's next? Heather has a conference for busy, working women. She's also working on her podcast, Make Me Known. 52:00 – Get to know you Guilty pleasures? Real Housewives, a face steamer and Trader Joe's peanut butter cups Favorite book genre? In this episode of Inside Great Minds with Adam Outland, Adam interviews Heather Adams, the founder and CEO of Choice Media & Communications. The central theme of this episode is about evolving who you are as a leader and entrepreneur to scale a business in order to design the life you want. As a leader and innovator in the PR landscape, Heather discusses the essential components for a business to have clarity in its messaging. She shares her storyteller roots and how important it is for any business to aspire to be storytellers, as well. She also discusses how she generates exposure for her clients and overcomes the challenges of an ever-evolving public relations industry. Key Takeaways ◾️ The importance of relationship building in almost all aspects of your business, from sales to providing services, and building a team. ◾️ The two hard truths she learned while building Choice: finding partners she could trust and pricing to grow. ◾️ After being laid off, Heather stood up for herself and the future she wanted to create. She advocated for herself and teaches the mindset others can follow to build the life they want. ◾️ Listening to your ideal client can lead to opportunities, both as a leader and in expanding a business. ◾️ The opportunities found during the COVID lockdowns when all of her clients were in crisis mode simultaneously, and how business owners should look at challenges as a way to grow. Quotes After being laid off: "My husband looked at me and he said, 'I don't want you to take your next step out of fear.' You know, 'You have worked so hard to build this career and professional success that you've achieved. Go and carve out and design the life that you are wanting.'" When it comes to scaling her business: "I used to believe that I was a really good manager and that I also could get in the trenches. And I think as I've matured and grown and also gotten feedback, I've learned that those are areas where I have some gifting, but it's not like my superpower. And so it's best to, as my mentor taught me, hire better and smarter than you and get people in those roles that can really help you in that in that regard." How to stay competitive in any industry: "Well, if we weren't constantly evolving and staying on top of the latest trends, the technology, the way people are receiving their information, different formats -- podcasts didn't exist back then, right -- then we would be non existent. So, I think you constantly have to be evolving, developing, and staying educated." Advice she would give to her 20-something self: "Number one, I would say calm down. Like, just relax, and rest more, you know. The second thing I would say is the size of your office, the title that you have, and the salary that you make does not define how successful you are, how happy you are, or what kind of leader you are." About Heather Adams Heather is the communications whiz who leads Choice's impressive team of women, and one man, as they serve preeminent voices in publishing, government, lifestyle, entertainment, business, and faith-based arenas. A sincere focus on connecting with people has resulted in a diverse list of past and present clientele that reads like a who's who of contemporary thought leadership and compelling characters: Rev. Billy Graham, President Jimmy Carter, Dave Ramsey, Jen Hatmaker, The Bachelor's Sean Lowe, Ernie Johnson, Robin McGraw, the Johnny Cash family, Rick Warren, Marcus Buckingham, WWE Hall of Fame Shawn Michaels, John Maxwell, and Max Lucado, among others, have all called on her. Heather has played an instrumental role in helping more than 100 authors land spots on The New York Times best-sellers and secured clients coverage in elite national media. Prior to founding Choice, Heather was head of Heather Adams Consulting, a branding, communication, and public relations firm she launched after serving as Director of Publicity at Thomas Nelson Publishers, a division of HarperCollins. Heather is a proud alumna of the University of Georgia. She lives in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, with her husband Matthew Adams, and their two young sons, Dixon and Thackston. Growing up, Heather Adams always had her nose in a book, and her heroes spoke to her from the pages; smart and savvy women like Anne of Green Gables, Jo from Little Women, and Nancy Drew.    Heather compares Nancy Drew's mystery-solving adventures to her own life today — owner of a public relations agency, Choice Media & Communications — because she's always “running toward the flames, constantly taking notes, and bringing order to the chaos.”   But, unlike Nancy Drew, Heather isn't doing this alone, and she is passionate about building a cohesive, invested team. After the partnership with her co-founder dissolved, Heather held a strategic planning retreat for her entire team. They re-evaluated Choice's mission and core values and Heather says this was a game-changer for their work culture — because, now, everyone has skin in the game.    Heather also has an unusual approach to human relations, arguing that you have to throw out all the policies and love your workers as human beings first. When one of her team members is going through a hard season, she puts their responsibilities aside and taps into what they need. This human-first approach carries through to every aspect of Heather's business and life, including her attitude towards her competition.   Before Heather started her own company she worked at Thomas Nelson, which was then the world's largest Christian publishing house, she worked with Michael Hyatt, who eventually became the CEO and chairman. He taught her many important lessons, including to embrace the competition and look at them as someone to learn from and champion instead of someone to take down.    Heather sees that as a crucial transformation in her life. As she says, “I have this mentality that a win for one is a win for all. And that was something I had to learn because I sucked at it.”   Don't be a podcast junkie…   Resources: choicepublicity.com Instagram: @choicepublicity Instagram: @heatherdixonadams Twitter: @ChoicePublicity Facebook: @choicepublicity Get your copy of Master the Key: A Story to Free Your Potential, Find Meaning and Live Life on Purpose   --   We are brought to you by the Lawton Marketing Group, a full-service advertising and design agency serving companies and entrepreneurs at all levels.
