In this bite size episode with Adam Bastock, we dive into the concept of sustainability in business. Adam shares insights on what sustainability means to him and how it encompasses more than just environmental concerns. It's about ensuring businesses thrive financially, operationally, and environmentally over the long term. Key Discussion Points: Defining Sustainability: Sustainability is not just about environmental impact but also financial stability. It's crucial for businesses to operate in a way that ensures their existence in the next 5, 10, or 15 years. Immediate and Long-term Actions: Addressing short-term pressures with quick actions is vital. Setting and achieving marketing goals that ensure profitability and success over the next year and beyond. Public Understanding and Education: Many people are still unclear about terms like “plastic” and the benefits of reducing single-use plastics. Effective storytelling can drive better understanding and adoption of sustainable practices. Making Sustainability Relatable: Relating sustainability to daily life and individual benefits can increase engagement. Marketing missions should highlight the personal benefits of sustainable practices. Challenges in Education: Traditional climate change education methods may not be engaging enough. Inspirational and practical education, like highlighting the impacts of sustainable choices, can be more effective. Responsibility and Action: Individuals and businesses both have a role to play in sustainability. Understanding the scale of the issue is crucial, but action is equally important. Supply Chain Transparency: Visibility into the supply chain can help consumers and businesses make informed decisions. Case study examples, such as a Norwegian supermarket reducing emissions by adjusting their receipts, demonstrate the impact of transparency. Economic Considerations: Economic factors, such as the ability to provide for one's family, play a significant role in how sustainability is approached. Solutions need to be practical and economically viable for individuals and businesses alike. Call to Action: Reflect on what sustainability means to you and your business. Consider immediate actions you can take to address sustainability challenges. Explore ways to make sustainability relatable and beneficial to your daily life and business operations. Christina graduated from the Technical University of Munich with a BSc in Marketing, Strategy, and Leadership and an MSc in Sustainable Resource Management. She then went on to earn her PhD in Sustainable Entrepreneurship. In 2019 she founded LEVO to assist startups in incorporating sustainability in the early stages and to investigate how businesses can use entrepreneurship to address societal problems. Christina has always been interested in sustainability, but entrepreneurship had not always piqued her curiosity. However, she met a group of founders at an event, and after learning about their startup, she became intrigued. She started working with them as an intern. During her internship, she enrolled in a research program at a university. Working with a startup that integrated sustainability and pursuing research on sustainability confirmed her ideas that entrepreneurship can be used to solve societal problems. From her research and experience, she learnt that a company's success should be based on a number of factors, including its social and environmental contribution, in addition to its profitability. Additionally, organizations should avoid delaying assessing their sustainability until they are large enterprises. Starting as soon as possible will lay the proper groundwork and guarantee the best outcome. Although responsible entrepreneurship is crucial, Christina has found that many organizations still do not recognize the advantages of sustainability. Some businesses don't view sustainability as a critical component of their business model that should be non-negotiable and given top priority, but rather as a task to be completed. Nevertheless, the future of entrepreneurship is promising, as more and more businesses start integrating sustainability and as the world moves toward a more sustainable future. Memorable Quotes: “Entrepreneurship is one of the most effective tools to address societal issues.” "Responsible entrepreneurship involves evaluating where you are and identifying areas for improvement." All of Lee's projects provide a service to the local community as it is bringing life back to a dying rural village. About the guestInspired by sacred geometry, Jordann Wine draws on classical forms and patterns in her work to reference mathematical concepts that reflect the wonders of the universe. Working with the golden ratio, fractals, and gradients these geometric abstract paintings, drawings and murals connect to notions of deep space in time, as well as deep space found in meditation. Floating, falling, fading and unfolding patterns of triangles and circles mesmerize the viewer, evoking contemplation of the infinite. Seeking order out of chaos, and interrupting rigidity of order with slight imperfections in the repetition is central to the meditative nature of her practice and to the solace it intends to bring out in the hand-drawn imagery. Along with her work in drawings, paintings and murals, Jordann has evolved her practice by introducing glitter. Glitter, commonly dismissed as an ordinary craft material, is elevated to a painterly standard as she foregrounds the material's inherent qualities of holding and releasing light. Making use of the medium's full range of iridescent, opaque, and translucent color qualities, she transforms the childish or garish reputation of glitter into a reflective cosmic field. Reflective surfaces instinctually remind people of water, the element most critical to survival. Glitter's shimmering surfaces, reminiscent of light hitting water, attracts the viewer into the work, evoking the appeal of both the movement of water as flow and the introspective quality of water as stillness. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from New York University; where she studied Sustainable Entrepreneurship in the Gallatin School of Individualized Study and minored in Studio Art. She continued her education at the Aegean Center for Fine Arts in Paros, Greece. Currently, based in Washington, DC, she has had solo exhibitions at Honfleur Gallery, George Mason University, and Strathmore Arts Center, as well as many national and international group exhibitions. She has since moved to the US, and is now focusing her efforts on her new startup whilst ensuring that she does it in a sustainable manner. We talk about a lot, including: How she developed a passion for entrepreneurship from an early age and through higher education What it was like being a junior PM at a startup and whether it helped her build her hard skills Her struggles with hustle culture, unrealistic expectations and inevitable burn out How she used the lessons from her first startup to make sure she didn't make the same mistakes again How she accidentally moved to Silicon Valley and ended up in a hacker house with 14 other hustling entrepreneurs The problems with hustle culture and why she's actively trying to get her friends to step out of it How a passion for community building and desire to connect led her to create 3 new startups in a pandemic How she used her past startup experience to decide it was time to park a couple of startup ideas and concentrate on one How she's helping people unleash their potential, fight imposter syndrome, and how important this is to her values Try SIDE PRJCT "Resumes are overrated, show me what you've built" Check out the SIDE PRJCT website. Tom shares his thoughts on the shift towards more sustainable business models as opposed to full-on capitalism driven businesses. He shares a fascinating view on the role of AI in our human future. A role that would allow us to become more Humain. By the age of 22, he founded two companies, traveled the world making music with UpWithPeople, became a spokesperson for UpWithPeople after leaving behind an unforgettable impression, gave a TEDx talk, was president of a student association focussed on sustainable entrepreneurship and became a father. Needless to say, he's a pretty fascinating individual. He was generous enough with his time to have a chat about habits, public speaking, meditation and much more. Inspired by sacred geometry, Jordann Wine draws on classical forms and patterns in her work to reference mathematical concepts that reflect the wonders of the universe. Glitter, commonly dismissed as an ordinary craft material, is elevated to a painterly standard as she foregrounds the material’s inherent qualities of holding and releasing light. Making use of the medium’s full range of iridescent, opaque, and translucent color qualities, she transforms the childish or garish reputation of glitter into a reflective cosmic field. Reflective surfaces instinctually remind people of water, the element most critical to survival. Glitter’s shimmering surfaces, reminiscent of light hitting water, attracts the viewer into the work, evoking the appeal of both the movement of water as flow and the introspective quality of water as stillness. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from New York University; where she studied Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Art in the Gallatin School of Individualized Study. She continued her art education at the Aegean Center for Fine Arts in Paros, Greece. Currently, based in Washington, DC, her work has been exhibited at the Mansion at Strathmore, Pepco Edison Gallery, Rhizome DC, and The Torpedo Factory Art Center, as well as in many other national and international exhibitions. She has several murals throughout DC, New York, and Jamaica and participated in POW! WOW! DC and MuralsDC. Her work has been purchased for private collections, including acquisitions for the permanent collections of Lockheed Martin, The Fairmont Hotel, and the Washingtonia Collection. https://www.instagram.com/jordannwine/

Jon Sebastiani is no stranger to the world of entrepreneurship. At the age of 8, Jon got his taste of working as an entrepreneur on his family’s vineyard in Sonoma Valley, founded in 1894 as one of the wine region’s first vineyards. He continued to work on the business side of the family brand throughout his 20s and early 30s, until the company was sold in 2005. After a self-proclaimed identity crisis of sorts, Jon shifted his focus to his own health, which led him to run in the New York City Marathon, and shortly after, put him on the fast track to launching a jerky brand, KRAVE. Now, his passion for wellness influences the majority of his business endeavors as founder of Sonoma Brands, one of the most well-respected and innovative venture capitalist firms in natural consumer packaged goods right now, with investors in wellness favorites like Hu Kitchen and True Botanicals. In this episode, we trace Jon’s entrepreneurial spirit from his beginning wine days to the genesis of Sonoma Brands, the trend of mission-driven food companies, and how he uses his savvy business chops to tap into the heart of the wellness industry and introduce products that are bold and accessible to all. We also talk about the tough side of family business, what it was like to sell his company to Hershey, and how to elevate classic, old-fashioned snacks with a modern twist to the masses with health, innovation, and wellness in mind. If you’re curious about the future of small food brands, the tricky business of wellness and fast trends, and how to combine grit and passion as an entrepreneur, this episode’s the one for you.
